Thread: The Old Skool Cult of Kefka, bitches!

Yeah that's true, It's kind of like in FF XII where you don't exactly completely control the characters but you can alter their strategy mid battle so you do still have a bit of control. Mostly you just want to make the right preparations before battle, what troops you put together, classes, etc. I thought it was a great game for it's time, being a realtime strategy rpg, in comparison with all the other turn based ones. It's gameplay was unlike anything else at the time. And it had a lot of replay value, depending on how you played the game, what characters you recruited, what classes you played with, how you defended towns, etc. I think it had up to 13 possible endings! I never got to play Ogre Battle 64 though, It's probably going to be on the top of my list if it ever gets released on the VC, or else I mite try to purchase it online or something. I'd say I like Tactics Ogre more than Ogre Battle though, that's more of your typical strategy rpg for sure. Both parts of the series are great imo though.

That's crazy about gauntlet legends not working though. That's one of the few gauntlet games I have beat (a friend and I never made it through Gauntlet IV for the genesis). My friend and I rented it one day and it took us awhile but we went thru it in 2 player mode, getting all the extra classes, etc. Simple games, but I think they can be pretty fun, especially in multiplayer mode. I actually wanted to try to rent and do the same for the newest PS2 version, but my Blockbuster doesn't even carry the game.

Phantasy Star IV is great, I wouldn't say it's the best rpg on the genesis, one of them though. I personally like the Shining Force series better, and in terms of Phantasy Star, I think II takes the cake as the best in the series (don't even bother with III i'd say though). I think to this day, Phantasy Star II is probably the hardest rpg I have played, if not, one of them for sure. I wanted to rip my hair out playing this when I was younger. IV is definitely good though, but I'd put it behind II.

Speaking of Genesis RPGs, i was reading Play magazine at work and read an article about this game Beggar Prince, originally a Chinese Genesis RPG released in 1995, it was translated to english by super fight team and is actually being OFFICIALLY released on Genesis carts. First commerical release since 1998, long live the old school!!

I think Guantlet Legends is the greatest Guantlet game ever made. I heard dispointing things about the more recent ones. I used to play it with two other players and it was insanely fun. It's one of the greatest multiplayer experiences I've ever had. I prefur cooperation over competition.

I've been playing Paper Mario for the N64 recently and wow, is that a great game or what. It is really cool seeing so many classic Mushroom Kingdom characters appear in an RPG. I also liked the small damage scale on the game. I mean 9 damage is awesome and your HP maxes out at 50. I think more RPGs should utilize the Action command idea, but it's practically become trademarked to Mario RPGs as they've been in them since the first one on Snes. Right now I'm giving superstar saga a try. Although it is quite good it is nowhere near as good as paper mario. I would really like to play 1000 year door or whatever paper mario 2 is called but I don't have a gamecube . I'm hopeing Nintendo might release GC games on the virtual console.

Ummm, yeah, I'm just going to bump this page up...even though I have been playing absolutely nothing.

I do have a renewed desire to get a Wii though. Apparently, many of the Homestarrunner games will be available for download and will work with the wiimoteamajig. Hella tight, yo...never shall I say that again.

Other than that, just the periodic round of Battlefront 2. Watching the movies always renews my desire to play that.

    Oldest school is D&D.

Gauntlet Legends was an awesome game, although it's the only I've played in the series. Food is good.

    CP:
    Battlefront...kind of

    Until now!

Heh, thank you Jin, i was thinking about doing the same although I don't have a lot of old school news to report. I guess lately i've been living the motto, that we are too busy playing games to post on here. And with that, i've been lost in the galaxy, ROGUE GALAXY that is! I got it opening day, and it's been sucking my life away ever since.

This is such a fantastic and original rpg. While it may have a few issues, an unoriginal, cliche, and very predictable story being one, at the end of the day it is simply one of the most fun rpgs I have played in a long time. Not saying it's better than FF XII, just a lot different, almost completely the opposite in every aspect. FF XII is slow moving at the beginning, this throws you right into the action, the license grid and other gameplay issues are very confusing, the revelation flow (rogue galaxy's upgrade system) is very similar to the license grid but is SO easy to use, so stream lined, and doesn't make every character seem generic seeing that each characters have their separate upgrades and abilities. If you complained about the battles being boring in FF XII because you don't control the characters, the battles in this game are intense and action packed due to the fun real time battle system. Think Kingdom Hearts..but much better and complex. And it's not just about button mashing either, there is a lot of strategy needed, especially with the awesome boss battles! Plus there is almost nothing to break up the game, load times are basically non existent, everything is seamless from battles to entering towns and buildings.

Anyhoo, I'm hoping to write a review by next week sometime once I am about done with the game. Three cheers for Rogue Galaxy, easily one of the best rpgs on the ps2!

And that's great news about the Wii Jin, I hadn't heard that. Those homestar runner games are hilarious. The Wii is definitely on the top of my list for next gen consoles but I still have a lot of life to squeeze out of my ps2 before I get into it. There's still A LOT of games I want to play. I'm glad to see more oldschool classics land on the Wii like Contra 3. That game is f***in tough! Maybe I'll finally get a chance to beat it!

Hey sorry I have been slacking. I finished school and life is really crazy.

Anyhow in old school news. I busted out the 16-bit super Nintendo! I forgot how awesome that console is! I have been playing the heck out of games like earthbound and super mario RPG.

I think that this club should have an activity of sorts. SO just as a suggestion what if we make a new Old School Cult of Kefka, bitches holiday and claim that like FEB 21 or some day this month is official 16 bit day (or old school day)! And you celebrate by only playing games that were made for a 16-bit console for that day. You could invite friends over to play super mario world, or Street Fighter II and make a whole party out of it. Also we could use this holiday to promote our club we could make banners or sigs suggesting that other members join in on our holiday.

It's just an idea and I just pulled the dat of FEB 21 out of my rear end but it might be worth doing. Any ideas?

Hey, props for busting out the SNES maxpower! I wish I could do the same, my friend lost my power adapter to mine that he was borrowing and I don't know where I can find another. Any ideas anyone?

I'm all game for a 16bit game, sounds like a good old school idea to me! As for banners, we do have the crowns Maxpower. I'm not sure if you were here when we were talking about them. Check out loco's sig for his crown. He was making some, I think him and I are the only ones with crowns as of now though. I don't have mine is my sig because I'm not General Leo at the moment though.

LONG LIVE THE OLD SCHOOL BITCHES!

I'd post more myself, but as many of you already know, I bought a Nintendo Wii last Friday, so I've been without oldschool games for a short while now. When I can afford to, though, I'm definitely going to get a Wii Classic Controller and start collecting some of the titles available for purchase. /grin

As for me, lately, videogaming has been limited to whatever I borrow from work for the Wii as well as a ton of Guitar Hero II and then FFXI, of course.

...but to be specific, here's EVERYTHING in my CP for the past week:

    Pokemon LeafGreen (GBA)
Diddy Kong Racing (NDS) (yes, that's right, it's NOT released to the public yet)
    Advanced Wars: Dual Strike (NDS)
    Excite Truck (WII)
    Wario Ware (WII)
    Trauma Center: Second Opinion (WII)
    Wii Sports (WII)
    Final Fantasy XI (PC)
    Guitar Hero (PS2)
    Guitar Hero II (PS2)
    Soul Calibur III (PS2)
    Super Smash Bros. Melee (GCN)

...and while I DO have my copy of Rogue Galaxy, I refuse to remove the wrapping until I finish at least two of the other RPGs I'm in the middle of at the moment -- a list which includes Shadow Hearts, FFXII, DQVIII, and three others for the PS2.

Like pretty much everyone else (so it seems), I haven't said much of anything lately because I haven't played anything old-school lately. In my case, it's because my laptop died on me, and hence I can't use any of my emulators anymore. *sob* I'd love to break out with my SNES, but since it's in the US and i'm in Norway, there isn't much I can do. So, the only game i've played at all in the last few weeks has been Counter-Strike (LAN parties for the win!), and too much of it. I've almost gotten my external hard drive to work again (yes, it broke too), and it's got Starcraft, Medieval: Total War and a few other gems on it, so the situation's not too bad. Until then, though...

Not been up to much lately. Although I may pick up Star Ocean (snes) soon and play through that.

On another note : I've finally moved into the Next Generation. I've bought a ps2 (no, that's not a typo). It only took me 8 years to buy one. Lol.

CP : Star Ocean 3 : Till the End of Time

  10. #1360
Star Ocean for the SNES is a great game I thought, especially considering the time it was doing some great and innovative new things. I've played all 3 games in the series to the max, and I still conclude that Star Ocean: The Second Story is the best in the series though they all are great and amazing games.

I'm still playing through Rogue Galaxy, though I'm stuck on this stupid one on one battle. It's funny because some reviews I have heard of the game say It's really hard and some say really easy. My experience thus far (about 15 hrs), is that the game definitely isn't that hard, but definitely not overly easy at the same time. I'll put it this way, if you have enough healing items and stay on your toes, you won't have much of a problem. Some of the enemies can wipe you out pretty fast if you aren't careful though. I know for a fact that the game was dumbed down from the Japanese version which people complained was too hard. I really don't mind that much, it goes with the overall fun feel of the game, it's such a nice lighthearted break after the serious nature of FF XII.

God this game has so much going on though, I've spent a shit load of time just messing around with the weapon synthesis system and upgrading my weapons. Fun stuff for sure.

I don't know why, I've never been able to get into CS. I'm a pretty hardcore Day of Defeat: Source player (im in the top 40 or atleast usually top 100 of most of the servers I play on a regular basis, 32 at the moment in my favorite. ), but CS is too hardcore and intense for me and my skills don't seem to transfer over well. Even though people say If you are good at one, you'll be good at the other, I feel like it's apples and oranges here. Day of Defeat seems like more of a pure team based game and takes a little more thinking and strategy while CS seems more like lightning fast trigger fingers and knowing maps like the back of your hand. You definitely die in CS A LOT faster than in Day of Defeat too.

    Ahem.

Gee Loco, that's all you've been playing for the last week?

I haven't played something old school in soooooo long. The oldest game I've played recently is Twinsen's Odyssey, which happens to be 3D, but also happens to be about 10 years old. Fun game. That was about a month ago, when I had more free time, so I haven't really been playing much of anything since then. Sigh. Just the way it goes.

CP: Budweiser. Its replay value is pretty good.

Holy shit dude, the people who say they're practically the same are practically retarded. The games, while they both utilize the Source engine, have completely different mechanics and physics, and therefore play nothing like one another. For the record, I suck pretty hardcore at DoD:S.

You're right about the difference between the two though. CS:S is all about reflexes and map memorization -- the latter, I'm excellent at, though the former still needs work. My aim is spot-on, and I never miss... the problem is that my reaction times are usually slower than those of the other person. If I get the first shot off, I live, plain and simple. I just happen to die more often than kill simply because of my slow reaction time.

CS:S isn't ENTIRELY about that, though. Strats come into play when you're in competitive leagues like CAL (Cyberathlete Amateur League) as I am.

Let's see. My setup for the week is this:

    Suikoden Tactics - PS2
And.. what you see here in my sig, too.

    Don't really have too much to add except I got my taxes done today. I get 161$ back, whee. o_o;

Haha, yeah, I guess that's true - reflexes are everything, which is why I tend to die so much - more often than not I end up leading in kills, but i'm usually leading in deaths at the same time, or close to it. And yes, I know every little nook and cranny of every good CS map, and even a few shitty ones. But once you've got it all down, the game is worth it.

Oh, and i've never played DoD, so I can't compare 'em. It sounds like a good time, though, and maybe a nice change of pace from CS, which we play EVERY WEEK. I'll look into it.

In any event, a small update on my computer situation: since I can't get my personal laptop to work, I just took the hard drive out and placed it in an external box, so now I at least have access to my ROMs. But I can't make any of my SNES save states work, so all my progress on FF5 has come to naught. *cries again*

I haven't posted here in ages. I have lurked it daily though.

No old school lately, except for about 5 minutes on Carmageddon for the PC. God that game is horrible. I got such a kick out of it when I was 13 though...

Working my ass off, sleeping little, and loving every second of FFXII. I may be alone in this, but I think that this one is my favorite so far. Plotwise its a little thin, and the license board is gay, but I can't seem to put it down....

So yeah. Still alive. Just lurking.

Noticing alot of us elder members of the cult ( aside from LC ) aren't posting much lately, I myself haven't had a post on TFF at all in a few weeks. Busy busy ya know? As far as gaming, for me it's slowed to a crawl. Outside of Modding on FFL ( byond://72.138.177.132:9868 ) I haven't touched so much as a controller ( except to watch DVD's ) in a good while. Too much preparing for my son's bday and working I chalk it up to. But, oh well, at least I'n here letting youse guys know I'm still alive and kicking ( such as it is ). I'll try and keep an eye out for the gang , but if I know them their too busy in FFXI-Land to talk to anyone XD

    Meh, its all good~

Aside from the occasional injection of various Hentai genres and FFXI gametime I've been occupied with shit around my new place, incase I forgot to mention I recently moved out of my mum's place. Sharing a unit with my brother now, 3 bedroom 2 story joint.. its rather spacious but I still have alot of shit to sort out and my usual pile of junk centered in room. Amazingly enough I logged out of FFXI early tonight where ZRO and I have been going rather spastic with randomness and he flashed me with this extremely addictive retro movie.. you've been fore-warned this River-City Random flash is FULL OF WIN AND GOLD!

Dark Brotherhood storyline is sweet, couldnt resist.

And one late night on FFXI during Besieged I was rather drunk, so the screenshot speaks for itself. XD

^Looks back to CS posts^ Oh yeah, CS definitely requires strategy too, I guess It's just a lot different than DoD. I too have a friend who is in a Cal-I clan, or is Cal-O? I've seen him wipe out entire teams. Damn maybe you'd know better than me with those names I don't really remember. I used to actually play CS 1.5 awhile ago, I was decent at it. If I practice enough in Source I can get good, once I learn the maps, I have great aim for sure I've been accused of hacking in DoD on a few occasions (mostly by crybaby n00bs who don't know what they are talking about), I don't always have the fastest reflexes but usually I do good. One day I decided to practice CS all day and I got good but then when i switched back to playing DoD i did horrible. Heh, I feel like I can't be good at both at once, so I'm just sticking with DoD.

@Plastik, I really liked FF XII, certainly a lot more than a lot of recent games in the series. It's definitely up there for me, but not one of my all time top favorites. You gotta give it props for doing so many new things, but some things like the license board weren't really implemented right I think, but it was a good concept. I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing, but it felt so much like a MMORPG to me, I'm not sure coming from you FF XI players if that's good, but I don't play any really. Overall, I think It'd be around 4 or 5 or so on my list (behind VI, Tactics, IV, I, and MAYBE IX)

@Dawzey, Hilarious Oblvion pics, I have played it briefly at a friend's house. Definitely a lot of fun, he completed the Dark Brotherhood storyline awhile ago, I'm not sure what he is doing now though. You don't even have to be doing much to be amused in that game though.

So yeah I've been plugging more hours into Rogue Galaxy, I think I'm at around 25 hrs or so which is probably half way or more with the main quest. I'm at Chapter 9, and there are 13 total so seems like it should be more, but this game has more sidequests, mini games, and stuff that I can shake a stick at. In a world of overly cinematic rpgs, It's nice to see a game that revolves around it's great gameplay. Did i mention the dungeons and towns in this game? They make FF XII's look like ant hills, I swear I spent 5+ hours in one recently, these things are huge, expansive, and just damn time consuming. The game has a strange over abundance of save points though so it's never that big of a deal..anyhoo..

LONG LIVE OLD SCHOOL BITCHES KEEP SLAYING N00BS!

Death to Oblivion! >=( Except when playing with the corpses. That's good fun.

FINALLY, I've been doing some old skool gaming again. I randomly decided to start playing, dun dun dun, SIM CITY 2000 again and I'm completely hooked. Let's party like it's 1994. =)

Those people though, such whiners. They want better funding for schools, police, etc but bitch about high taxes. Eeesh.

Other than that, random Rise of Nations and Civ 4 runs.

    CP:
    Sim City 2000
    Rise of Nations
    Civilization 4

    Until now!

I salute you for taking the initiative of doing some old school gaming Jin. You gotta love Sim City 2000, I used to be hooked on that way back when. I had the original Sim City, but 2000 was much better. I remember how much I loved the fact that you could change the look of the buildings to the futuristic tilesets. I was so impressed.

Well I'm basically done with Rogue Galaxy at about 40 hours. The main quest that is, but there is a SHIT LOAD of extra stuff to do. I'm not sure whether I'm going to do it now, or finish it later because I still got Okami and Grandia to finish too. *sigh* Next on my list after these three titles is Valkyrie Profile 2 and Jade Empire on the PC. That'll still be awhile away though obviously.

I've been having a craving in my loins for some old school gaming. More specifically, Super Mario Allstars and Secret of Mana. I'm going to hunt down an SNES power cord and get back to some old school gaming soon!

    Keep Slaying the N00bs bitches!

Just to let ya know, Jade Empire will only keep you busy for about 20-24 hours per run through. Damned good game, but just a tad bit on the short side (unlike BioWare's KOTOR series @.@).

    Jade Empire was what I used to keep myself entertained when I got my net cut off for a while one time, and it uhh...ran out of game before my net came back up. <_<;;

    CP:
Way too much FFXI...which is usual

Wow, that is good to know, thanks for the info. 20-24 hours though? That is a slap in the face to a rpg gamer! People complain about 30 hours being short, but damn I could finish that game in a few days. I've played both the KOTOR games briefly already, and I was hoping to get into something new, and I really like the style and asian influence of the game. I guess I'll have to think about it, because it does definitely look like a good game but that is pretty short.

Oh yeah..and I have entered my old school hero number 3 phase. LONG LIVE CYRUS!

xD hi my special underloved cult - i have been most horrible in keeping away from you all! But
So now im back at school and need every reason to procrastonate i figure this is the ultimate place to do it! (I started art school this year - uni is very scary and exciting. Much drawing of anime etc on my behalf, but i think my teachers will get angry if i donnt do some "proper "art"" soon.)

    Any one miss me? lol

Anyway, my most exciting news is a friend has found me a CD from china which has pretty much all FF's on it. (not inclueding 11 or 12) I dont have a gameboy so im excited. =D

Despite the very confusing translating ive been playing FFII. ^_^ Tis awesome. But can someone explain the learn function? When i talk to people in towns they want to teach me or learn something. I can't figure out what to do >.<

So, other wise currently playing FF12 in all its splendor and glory. Actually 12 reminds me of the older ff's in the way you have to take time out to lvl and get money (so hate getting money right now xD). XIII and IX were perticually easy to finish without much effort on the leveling up behalf.

To stay on topic. FFXII = My favorite so far. No joke. I dont want to beat this game....

Also, my reason for posting - I finally got FF6 for my GBA. Now I can finally see what the fuss is all about. I have played it for about an hour, and so far I can see its potential. The characters seem a little fruity this far, but the moogles are awesome....

Who knows, maybe i'll pull a Cesar and love the hell out of this game. Dunno.

    I missed you, Juice.

Plastik: Seriously, it's your favourite so far? Blaaaaaah. I can't stand it. The story is generic and without mysticism; the characters are simplistic and one dimensional; the main character is a joke and is so unimportant that I forget he's the main character and the battle system gives me the same kind of nightmares that I still periodically get from playing FFXI. The ability system was poorly planned out and is just a worse version of FFX's sphere grid with the noticable handicaps of having everyone boringly start in relatively the same place, giving them no diversity and making it so you have to fly blind for your first time through, negating any possible way to plan out your characters. It's a joke!

On another topic though, kudos for Shining Force 2. I should really start that up again.

Haha, well, I guess it does start off kinda slow. You'll enjoy it more and more as you go on; everything develops really well. Trust me.

Beyond that, I went through FFT:A a second time, thus confirming how much arse it kicks. I hate that it gets such bad rep just because it's inferor to the original, but I guess comparisons are inevitable. It's a good game in its own right, though. Now i've moved on to, ah, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon for GBA. *cough* Why that is, I don't know. It's pretty good, but a bit repetitive. And the story sucks. Then again, you don't play Pokemon games for the story, now, do you?

Just for the record, Shining Force 2 is my favorite strategy game of all time. If only we could see the holy grail of Shining Force 3 AND all it's scenarios that weren't released here originally. I think I would have a new favorite If I could get my hands on those.

You people are certainly loving FF XII. I liked it for sure..but not my top game. I agree that it starts out slow, but you'll enjoy it more as the game goes on. I still have yet to beat all the clan hunts and everything myself. I have a strange habit of getting to the end of a game then putting it on the back burner.

I put Rogue Galaxy (at the final boss) and Okami on hold for the time being, because I bought a new AC adapter and two new and crisp SNES controllers. Now I am brushing the dust off of my SNES and getting back into the oldschool stuff. I've been playing a lot of Super Mario Allstars in my quest to beat all the games again. I've also been considering starting a new game in one of my RPGs, possibly Super Mario RPG but I'm not sure. In addition, I've been ordering a few old SNES games off of amazon, Battle Toads in Battle Maniacs, Battle Toads/Double Dragon, and Legend of the Mystical Ninja. My friend and I are die hard SNES fans so I wanted to find some good multiplayer games (right now I mostly own a lot of rpgs besides mario and zelda). I remember how hard those Battle Toads games are but we are really determined to beat them. I have quite a few more SNES games I'm ordering in the future as well.

SO LONG LIVE THE OLD SCHOOL!

..oh yeah and I ordered Mario Golf for my Nintendo 64 as well. Not TOO oldschool, but a really fun game none the less.

See, my thing with FFXII is this...

In most FF games, theres a challenge up until level 50 or so. Then, you have two options. either beat the thing, or level up to 99 and do all the top stuff. From 50-99 - You are bored as hell. With FFXII, there is constantly something out there to challenge you every 5 levels or so. That alone, is why I like it. I never get tired of leveling and whatnot. Sure, the story sucks, the license grid needs work, and most of the characters are one-dimensional, but I simply don't get bored with it. Nothing more, nothing less....

To agree w/ you guys one more time... SF2 is the shit. I am on my like, 900th time through. That doesn't get old either.... m

Wii's virtual console has blessed me with The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Sonic the Hedgehog. Yes, that's right Dawezy, I gots me some Sonic.

Speaking of Sonic, Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Wii is the first Sonic game that has been any good in a decade. It's what Sonic in the third dimension should have been from the start. That's not to say that the Adventure games were bad, but they just weren't very... Sonic. You know?
