    Tattoos - yes or no?

What do you think about tattoos?
-are they an expression of art?
-are they an attempt to fit in?
-are they a waste of money?
    -black&white or colour?
    -should they have a meaning?

do you have tattoos? if you do, post them here and tell us why you got them and when. I have a few myself, but I dont have any good pictures. If this thread kicks off, ill take some and post them on here.

Question 1: Sure why not everything is apparently.

Question 2: Not for every person who happens to have tattoos, but I'd imagine it is for some.

Question 3: Not if you don't think it is, and not as long as the person who did your tat didn't fark up.

Question 4: I prefer colored ones, (Pretty sure there was a topic on this before, maybe another similar) My friend has his forearm done in color and it's so cool yet pretty ^^ but still not homo.

Question 5: If you're going to trouble yourself with a tattoo it might has well have some sort of meaning imo. It's seems silly to mindlessly ink up your body.

I want one now actually. I have this thing for dreamcatchers so I kind of wanted a small ankle one like this:

I kind of like this one too:

I was thinking that since I'm artificially creating it, I'll create it with rocket fuel instead of blood, and thus it will be able to fly, using the dolphin's dorsal fins as wings. And from the air, it will look down upon us all and protect us against sharks, and search for bananas.

I have a half sleeve on my right arm and a chest piece in its early stages. I got my half sleeve as soon as i turned 18, it had meaning at the time but that meaning has become meaningless. So I argue how relevant whether or not a tattoo should have meaning is. Im almost 21 and I work full time now, but I still want to be covered in tattoos (full sleeves, back/chest etc). Its a shame that it can have an affect on your employment opportunities.

-are they an expression of art? Anything can be.
-are they an attempt to fit in? For some, possibly
-are they a waste of money? in many cases, I think so (...butt tatoos)
-black&white or colour? whatever the design calls for
-should they have a meaning? can, but don't need to

I think A tatoo is most responsibly done(sounds off doesn't it?) when it is a timeless image, like tribal markings or a versitle image, say, a playing card for example.
I think it is irrisponsible when people get a sports team, celebrity face, band logo or even a video game logo(yes, people do it) tatooed on themselves, they probly won't even care for the game or team in as little as just a few years.

I think tatoos are cool as long as people stay away from stamping novelties on themselves.

btw: that change in zodiac dates must have screwed up ALOT of peoples tatoos.

Does your sleeve extend past your shirt sleeve? Or do they ask about tatoos in the feild(s) you want to work in?

I work in a primary school as I.T tech, but so far it seems it doesnt really matter as long as they arnt crude or blantantly offensive. My point was that if I was to get full sleeves (which I plan to) that it COULD have an effect on possible future opportunities. Its legal discrimination.

Re: Tattoos - yes or no?

None for me, but I've been semi-involved to involved (I don't ****ing know) with a couple guys who had them. One guy had a bunch. Arms, chest, sides. Especially his arms. He usually went with bands he liked or images he thought were cool.

Other guy has 5 small ones. Two he likes, the other 3 are real silly - one of them being a pineapple.

I'm cool with someone I'm with having tattoos, as long as they aren't somehow insulting, and I think they can look awesome. But for me, it would have to be something with a lot of significance for me to want it on me forever.

If I HAD to get one, I'd probably go with the word "Synchronicity." My name is spelled with an "syn" to stand for that word, which I always thought was pretty great.

Re: Tattoos - yes or no?

A tattoo is a type of art, yes. I don't particularly like them unless they're done properly, or signify the right thing. For example, names and dates aren't really my thing. Why do you need names and dates etched into your flesh? In case you forget the names of your loved ones and their dates of birth or anniversaries? I've never understood it. Also, a lot of the time, text tattoos look awful.

In the greater scheme of things, they are a waste of money. To get inked by someone who knows what they're doing, you're looking at £50+ for something the size of a fifty pence piece or two. For me to put that much money into a tattoo, it'd better have some significance. A tattoo should have a meaning, and if I do ever get one, I'd want it to be something I've personally designed - not something I saw in a book at the tattooists.

As for colours, I've always liked plain black tattoos. I don't know why, but colourful tattoos just look really cheap. My aunt has one on her lower back that was filled in with darker colours of reds and greens, which I actually like. So I guess if it's darker colours, it's better. Bright colours just look horrible.

Re: Tattoos - yes or no?

As i've stated before, id rather get a tattoo that I think looks wicked as opposed to something with meaning, Since the meaning wears off after time and you're just left with the tattoo. Most artists will only draw up originals for you. If you have no idea what you want, the 'artist' will just give you a book to look at and you pick something out. That is the fault of the person getting tattooed and they will be left with a very generic and common tattoo.

Also, tattoos dont have to have a meaning at the time. Sometimes they may develop a meaning on their own. Alternatively, they could represent the time in your life when you had it done.

That's why I'd only bother with a tattoo if there was a meaning. Sure, I'd want my tattoo to be awesome looking, but meaning > awesome. Having the meaning behind such a commitment gives the tattoo its own personality, which is more awesome than just getting a wicked cool tattoo which means absolute shit to you.

Imagine being asked by someone in the street about what made you get a particular tattoo, and you can't even tell them something other "I thought it was cool." You'd look like a bit of a moron as opposed to someone with a thoughtful tattoo.

My dad drew up his own tattoo for his chest. It's an Egyptian eye in a pyramid, but it has an alien reference. I don't quite remember what the story was behind it, but it was based on one of his theories of life and the universe, and represents the time he thought he was abducted by aliens. Mad, I know, but that'd impress me much more than a "Oh, this tattoo? Yeah, it was in a colouring book at the tattooists parlour, and I just got this throbbing ***** when I saw it." xD

Re: Tattoos - yes or no?

I agree with you totally. But im not sure if you missed the part where I wrote that the meaning of the tattoo could wear off. I wrote that I myself have a half sleeve that held a lot of meaning to me at the time, but its not even something I think about now and I seriously couldnt care less about it. I wish I had got something else. So my next work will be purely for the sake of portraying beautiful works of art on myself, and may not have any other meaning to it, other than that.

Thats just me and thats what I wanna do. I respect anyone who gets a tattoo with the intention of having a heartfelt meaning. It all makes sense.

That's a good point, kindof what I was getting at with my novelty tatoo example.

Re: Tattoos - yes or no?

They might be an expression of art - but then only for the one who drew it. I don't get why people think that their body can be some kind of art. I mean: A body's a body. Nothing more. When I draw a heart on my hand that isn't art either. So for me, just the tattoos, the pictures, are art. But not the whole thing on the body.

Attempt to fit in... I don't know. Oo I don't think so. So far, people I know got their tattoos because they wanted to be "individuals". (That's not irony - it's just that you can't be an individual if there are several people doing this because of the same reasons... at least in my opinion.) So where do they want to fit in? Though, when I think about it, my brother's girlfriend just got a tattoo (or even two or three, I don't know how many she has) because my brother likes tattoos. So maybe she wanted to fit in... in some way... she wants to be more attractive for my brother. Idk.

Actually, to me, they ARE a waste of money. But if someone likes tattoos and has enough money, that probably isn't a waste at all. Mostly because I don't like tattoos. (Okay, "don't like"... I just wouldn't want to have one myself. But I've no problem with people who have one... I'd have to dispise my brother otherwise o_o") So for me: Tattoos? NO!
(And of course I wouldn't like my boyfriend to have a tattoo, as I have to see his body all the time... ^^")

SOME tattoos look great, though. (I wouldn't want them, as I said, but I like the pictures ^^") When it comes to that, it doesn't matter if it's black&white or in color. Some look better when they're black&white, some when they're colored.

Most people I know (okay... my brother... his girlfriend... some classmates... ^^") don't care about meanings - they have tattoos they like. Like my brother's girlfriend has a spider on her arm (which looks pretty impressive, by the way). My brother has a cover of a metal band's album on his arm.
But also a former classmate of mine had a chinese sign and the name of her father (who had died already) on her neck. That's the only tattoo which has a meaning... at least the only one I know about.

Since the meaning wears off after time and you're just left with the tattoo.
I'd say that this depends on the meaning. As for my classmate: She'll remember the meaning forever. And for her it was some kind of tribute to her father. At least that's what she told me.

The only thing I really dislike about tattoos is that they look quite strange and ugly when people get old. :/ But that's none of my business. ^^"

Re: Tattoos - yes or no?

If I were to get one I would like a King of Hearts playing card, actual size and full color, right on the inside of my arm, near the joint.

There really is no meaning, but the image is timeless.

and there is the possibility of nice card forcing tricks in the future.

If they can find a way to do it that doesnt hurt, I would like to get tribal designs all over my gentials (not, a joke, I really do).

Re: Tattoos - yes or no?

-are they an expression of art? They can be. It depends. Some people may just have a logo that they think is cool, but others do have stuff they draw themselves and the like. So yeah, they can be. I think they are.

-are they an attempt to fit in? Again, they can be. This is the wrong reason to get a tattoo.

-are they a waste of money? Again, they can be (see a pattern?). They can be very regrettable.

-black&white or colour? Depends on the picture. If it is a full work, like a sleeve, then colour is the way to go. Perhaps for smaller ones, I'd say keep it simple. Sometimes, smaller ones can look real tacky with colour.

-should they have a meaning? This is the only question I have a one sided opinion on. YES, they should. I think just going into a tattoo shop and asking for a skull, for example, isn't the right way to go about it. Like when people have the names of their kids and dates of birth and stuff, there's a meaning behind those.

Yes, I have a tattoo. I have Griever from FFVIII on my right wrist. I got it because playing FFVIII was a huge part of my childhood. It was (and still is) my favourite game ever. So there is a meaning behind mine.

I'm looking to get the words 'Maybe I'm A Lion' down the side of it.

I'm looking to save up and get another, but I'm not sure whether to go with this:

    (Just the dude)

    Or this:

I'll get them both eventually, but I don't know which one to get next.

Tattoo's are a really committed way of expressing art, i love them also without saying a word it can tell you something about a person.

I would get one but i'm scared of needles and if i go in drunk my blood will be too thin so i'm screwed i will probably try to get one sometime though, Probably my teams Motto.

Re: Tattoos - yes or no?

-are they an expression of art? -- Some are, yes. Some are beautifully done, no matter the reason or subject, and can be admired as, "I wouldn't get that on my body, but damn, that looks good."

-are they an attempt to fit in? -- Some are. I'd say maybe most. To a lot of people (kids), it's a fad, something to show off.

-are they a waste of money? -- Some are, of course. But it all depends on what YOU want. I might not want to spend my money on something, but if somebody else wants it and they're not using my money to get it, I don't care.

-black&white or colour? -- Some look better one way, others another. Out of my five, two have color, and they look better with color than they would without.

-should they have a meaning? -- I think so. I think it's pretty childish to get something permanently scarred into your body (that's what it does, it scars) because "it looks cool". I saw a guy in a bar with a Yoda tattoo, and all I could think of was, "regret this tattoo, you will".

do you have tattoos? -- Since I was a child, I always figured that if I ever get any tattoos, they will either be about the men I serve in combat with or my family. Of course, I later realized that they are one and the same. So all five of mine concern leadership, honor, or memorial.

As far as Zan goes, I'd suggest getting the Linkin Park one and not even getting the other -at all-. It's just as bad as a "generic skull". At least the other one looks better and has some sort of meaning.

Although down the line, you most likely will regret getting it also, because maybe you won't like LP anymore down the line. >_>

I myself want to get Succubus wings on my back. Not tiny ones either. Big wings that cover my back as if they were 'real' wings. ;p

A little cliche don't you think? I can't tell you how many of those I've seen.
Have you thought about burning on some scars? to look as though you had some wings once that have sence been removed?

@Zan, I agree with Victoria. You may not even like those bands in the future. Especialy rock bands come and go from peoples intrests, both of those being very juvenile bands I highly doubt you will like them when youget older.

Ther're both great bands but...seriously, that's youth culture. You'll only look like a creeper with those tatoos when your 40.

Oh, really? That's too bad... =(
I'm obsessed with Succubi so much I self-titled myself their Queen. So Succubus wings on my back was really meaningful.

Although the scarring thing sounds really interesting. How would one go about doing that? o.O

I would probly make some kind of custom shaped cattle branding irons.

It'd hurt like hell and require some treatment, I'de imagine.

it may look out of place if you have other tatoos on your body though. If you have tatoos anyway.. the wing pictures may be the way to go.

    1. To some, yes, it could be art. It really comes down as someone's definition of art, and while some tattoos do look good, to me it's art at their own level.

    2. I'm leaning to yes on that one. Probably peer pressure, since lots of people just want to do what their friends are doing. You know, doing the latest fad and whatnot.

    3. To me, they would be. But for someone who wants to prove their love for someone by sealing their name on their neck or arm, it's probably worth spending on. I say probably, because they could regret it down the road if they end up breaking up.

    4. Black and white for me. Color looks more repulsive when someone is sweating or wearing sunscreen over it.

    5. It might as well, because if it doesn't have a meaning, why would you get one in the first place?

Overall, I find colored tattoos repulsive. Names are okay by me. I don't have one, but I'll be honest. If I wanted to support something, I'd get a flag or a stamp for our troops, a costume for my favorite character in any genre, or get one of those temporary tattoos. Because getting a real one hurts (or so I heard), and if I end up hating what I get, I'd have to remove it, which is also painful. At the same time, though, I don't mind if any friends have them. I keep my thoughts to myself and won't ruin the day for them.

Plus, I accept the fact that I'll be old someday. Tattoos don't look good on old skin, do they?
Please read the poetry from two great friends of mine. May they find peace.

"The truth is like a lion; you don't have to defend it. Let it loose; it will defend itself."
    ~St. Augustine

As if anyone would care about their physical appearance when they reach 60 anyway. Its not like you're gonna go round picking up chicks and then be like "oh noo, i have saggy tattoos I'm so ugly".
for me, the growing old part and having tattoos potentially wrinkle (who says they will) shouldn't really be an issue unless you're going to be concerned about your appearance when you reach that age.

As for meaning, I think some people will dig forever to find a meaning until it becomes more like an excuse. Do you really NEED a tattoo of griever? whether it be something with meaning, or just for the sake of art, in the end they are cosmetic enhancements on your body. When does the meaning cross the line of an excuse, just to reason with yourself to get the tattoo.
Im not sure I fully understand why people get tattooed when someone close to them dies. It falls under the same catagory as having 'words and dates etched into your skin'

just in case I get flamed, I must state that is only my opinion.

People express stuff in different ways. This is how I expressed something that I felt close to myself. I'm not saying I needed it, I wanted to show how much it meant to me in a way I deemed fit. People who get tattoos of dates of people close to them passes on, they are paying tribute to them in a way that they feel fit.

Also, thanks for the suggestions people, but I do change my mind about what I want a lot. That's probably why I haven't gotten any other tattoos in the year it's been since my last one . Suppose you've got to be sure right?

I have several so that answers most. I drew mine myself because I think the ones in the books are too common. Maybe that's me being vain but I think if I'm going to have somthing there forever it'd damn well better be original.

    - Yes, some are. Mine are. I love to draw and I enjoyed designing them.
    - Some are. When you get a big group of friends and they all have Coy Carps on their arms; that's to fit in. I don't get it.
    - Yes. Way too expensive. I don't care, though. I like them. I like to look at other peoples too.
    - Both are good. I like black and white for some designs. For traditional Chinese/ Japanese it HAS to be in colour. They look amazing in full colour.
    - Not necessarily. One of mine has a specific meaning but others dont. I drew them because I enjoyed the patterns/ colours/ I just liked the design. Some things have meanings beyond just 'I got this cause my godlfish died' or whatever. Maybe they just make you happy to look at? I'm cool with people getting things for significance but I wouldn't say the have to mean something at all.

I think that's what it is. The picture IS stuck on there forever, if they didn't dig for meaning they would be left with nothing but regret.

Hey Hey now, my dad is 64 and he definitely cares about his appearance. Maybe not as much as I would for example but Just because he's old doesn't mean he has completely disregarded the way he looks.

No he's not going to be "picking up chicks" I wouldn't allow that but he still has insecurities like any normal person.

I just wanted to point that out since no one else responded to it.

I was thinking that since I'm artificially creating it, I'll create it with rocket fuel instead of blood, and thus it will be able to fly, using the dolphin's dorsal fins as wings. And from the air, it will look down upon us all and protect us against sharks, and search for bananas.

I would think by that age, a persons insecurities would lay elsewhere. We'll just have to wait and see!

Re: Tattoos - yes or no?

What do you think about tattoos?

Some are tastefully done, others are not. Over all I do think it is an art form with the person doing the tattoo being the artist. Now the design that someone decides to go with is up to them and can't really blame the person that did the tattoo if they liked it back when they got it but hate it a few years down the line.

-are they an expression of art?

Yes, they are a living expression of the artists hand.

-are they an attempt to fit in?

Sometimes and sometimes not, it depends from person to person.

-are they a waste of money?

Depends on what they are of and if the person likes them or not. Over all if the person likes them then they will feel that it was not a waste of money.

    -black&white or colour?

White? Thats a pigment in tattooing. Calling BS on that one (or discrimination haha). Also White is not a common color when someone is being tattooed and most artist will discourage using that pigment because the color fades and will not hold for long at all.

So I will say I like black.

    -should they have a meaning?

Its up to the person that is getting one. Honestly who care what someone else thinks as long as you are happy with your choice.

Now on to a few gripes. (Yes I just powered through the questions to make a few statements)

    First off:
    Starfighter:
As i've stated before, id rather get a tattoo that I think looks wicked as opposed to something with meaning, Since the meaning wears off after time and you're just left with the tattoo.

Just because your choice in something that didn't last doesn't mean that it will be applicable to everyone else. That is a broad statement that you are applying to everyone.

My tats do mean something to me and alway will, I will explain more later in this post.

    Unknown Entity
I don't particularly like them unless they're done properly, or signify the right thing. For example, names and dates aren't really my thing. Why do you need names and dates etched into your flesh? In case you forget the names of your loved ones and their dates of birth or anniversaries?
I hope most of this is in jest. I know some people have tats that could be seen as a reminder of certain dates, maybe dates that they don't want to forget but most of the time, specially in my case, it is not a reminder but a way to honor those dates. Epic dates that not only changed my life but also brought 2 amazing children into this world.

I need no reminder. I exonerate and cherish.

There is more I want to say about some of the above posts but I will move on for now.

My tats. I have two now. Some of you know this and most of you don't because you are not my friend on FB to see the pics. If you are my friend on FB check them out if you haven't seen them.

The tats are on my left and right wrists and each one incorporates each of my children's names along with their birth date surrounded by a flowing banner. I designed the layout of the tats myself with an over all image that would appear when the two tats are brought together (for those that cant see it or can not guess they make a very simplistic heart via the swooping banners).

I didn't get them as a reminder of just a date, I got them because those were life altering dates and I felt that expression via tattoos would be a great way to honor my children (outside of being the best dad / father (yes there is a difference between father and a dad) that I can be.)

Even though both designs are based off of simplicity and the over all heart is simplistic the whole tat display is complex. (I will try and get a pic up in the member picture thread soon). Complexity through simplicity, yeah I know I have said that before.

I have had Breyens for over 3 years now and the Friday before last I had Aadens inked and Breyens reinked to match the color of the new one. I love my tributes to my children and always will even when I am on my death bed and they are all wrinkly and faded to almost nothing.

For now I will shut up and hope I put some perspective into the posts that I quoted. Trust me there are more I want to quote but need to get in the shower.

no please, dont shower. Sit down and continue to correct all of us with your nitpicking.

calling BS on me because I accidentally wrote white instead of grey, what? Then you try and talk to me about white pigmentation in tattoos. whatever mate. You have 2 tiny tattoos on you. Stop pretending to be an expert.

Just because your choice in something that didn't last doesn't mean that it will be applicable to everyone else. That is a broad statement that you are applying to everyone.
I made a grammatical error and had no intention of saying that would happen to everyone. It happened to me.
