    My nightmare

I've spoken to one person about this so far. When I was little, I was plagued with nightmares. These were truly vivid and terrorfying nightmares that revolved around a single figure. It all started when I was about 6 years old. The reason I can remember that far back is because it had such a profound experience with me, that it never allowed me to forget. What is "it" you ask? I'm still asking myself that to this day. Being an atheist and one not to believe in anything supernatural, I've always stuck to the conclusion that I had an overactive mind. Though some things now are hazy, I cant explain some of the events that took place.

back in my old home, my room was down a (what appeared to me back then) long hallway. At the other end of the hallway were my sisters room, they had to share when I was born. My room was like any 6 year old boys room. Had a bucket filled with toys, a bed, a closet etc. Nothing special and no electronics. My bed was alligned with the wall and on the opposite side were my windows with curtains. I always had to go to sleep at 8:30 at night as a rule so I was fresh for school in the morning. From memory, I usually slept really well at these early times. One night, I had a dream of a figure. It resembled a tonberry, although it had the head of a rat with a long pointy nose. This figure would come into my room and stab my in the stomach with its nose causing an incredibly intense feeling on impact. I would then wake up. being a kid, I cried and ran to my parents room where they let me stay for the duration of the night. These dreams continued exactly the same. I would be laying in my bed and feel a horrible presense, the kind of feeling you get when you KNOW something horrorfic is going to happen. It would then make its way down my hallway and then proceed to stab me in the stomach with its sharp nose, the intense sensation followed. As the dreams continued, they expanded. Soon, there was some form of music accossiated with its presense. I would know when it was near and attempt to escape somewhere, only to fall over and succumb to the fear that it was right there, and thus fail again. These dreams occured on and off for 2 years. When I was older (8 or 9) I was so afraid of sleeping, that I would try to stay awake the whole night to avoid having to go through there nightmares. One of these nights is when I noticed something that would reappear every night until i moved out of the house. A shadow resembling the long nose of 'it' was on the door to my room. I tried very hard to move everything I could to see what was causing the shadow, but alas I could not find what it was. The reason a shadow could be seen is because I had a night light in my room as these dreams had given me a fear of the dark. I get sleepy and awake realising that I had fallen asleep, then I see a strange shape on the wooden stem that holds my curtains. It moves as I gaze at it, and then dissapears. I cannot remember clearly if this was a dream. The months went on and I began to fear because I had not dreamed of 'it' for a while, and knew something was coming, something big. One night, that big something happened. I had dreamed the dream. I heard the sounds, I knew 'it' was coming and I wouldn't stand for it. So I got out of bed and headed for the hallway to exit my room. I stopped in the middle and felt a horrid chill down my spine, I then began to run only to be jerked back as if my t shirt had caught on something behind me, I looked back with terror to find there was nothing there, so I try to run again and I get jerked back again. This time I did not look back, I continued to run and made my way to the living room almost at my parents room which is when I was picked up and dropped to the floor. I could not remember if this was a dream or not. All I remember is that after that night, I couldnt sleep.

There were strange dreams from then on, I had dreams of 'it' chasing me through the house, the floors became deep oceans and I was safe standing on my couch. I had dreams of 'it' chasing my to the backyard while I tried to get to the safety spot (the spot where I couldn't be harmed, i dont know why that was the spot, it just happened to work everytime i had that dream) and eventually I had what some of you might refer to as 'lucid dreams'. A dream in which I knew exactly what I was doing. It was at this point I realised that if im in control of whats happening, then I should be able to create a good outcome for myself. At the same time I knew that my mind was a mess from all that had happened to me, It was hard to concentrate. I was eventually able to bend the events in the reccuring dreams to my will. When I refer to reccuring dreams, I mean the same scenario of the dreams I had prior. I was able to create positive outcomes and come out unharmed from these dreams. No more getting stabbed in the stomach, no more awful sensations and disfigured objects appearing before me. That was until I had another dream. At this point, I am 10 years old. It had been months since I had been attacked by 'it' in my dreams. Then I had a dream like none I've had before. It appeared to me as vivid as all my other dreams had been. It was some form of court room. There were floating things everywhere, I cannot describe them but I will always remember their presence. It was silent. They floated above and below me, to my left and to my right. They dissapeared after a short while and then I came face to face yet again with the thing that haunted me for the past 4 years. It was coming toward me and there was nothing but silence, usually there would be some form of music playing. Then all of a sudden one of the floating objects had formed into a weapon and placed itself in my hand, as soon as this happened I had a surge of energy and confidence, and beat the thing until it fleed. I woke up instantly as soon as it had left the room. I remember waking up feeling confident and calm. I remember going back to sleep and waking up. I remember everything that happened at school that day and I remember what I ate for dinner that night. I never dreamed of 'it' again after that night.

the shadow also dissapeared from my door.

That's a crazy set of dreams! I have no idea what they are but I had a similar thing with a super scary couple of recurring dreams! I hated it! When you look back now it's crazy as I very very rarely have nightmares now. I also remember every detail of my main dream and the main parts of the other dream! Strange how these stay on the memory even tho like you I was 6ish and they are crystal clear!

Didn't read the whole thing. Perhaps it resembled something from your childhood (a cartoon show, or something, etc). If you can't remember what it is that you watched during your childhood, yet you remember this vividly, then maybe its more serious that I think. Yes, I'm a skeptic, I'm always a skeptic even if I love you Rowan. Was there any traumatic event that happened during your early childhood? A family member dying? Parents divorced? You broke your arm? Anyway "WEIRD".

I've had my fair share of weird dreams and "hallucinations" but the weirdest to me was during a birthday thing where we had shiny silver balloons that floated to my ceiling, and I thought they were faces and laughing at me and I screamed until my parents came to turn on the lights and show me they were just balloons.

Anyway, if you still have the same feelings, see someone professionally. Why not? Also, paragraphs. They are good.

Also, I haven't read this in psychology but if you have a traumatic dream of something when you're younger can you also be afraid of it and dream about it again (as in a reocurring dream) later in your life? Presumably yes.

If I remember right most dream analysists state that dreams involving rats have to do with the developement of survival skills. So maybe that nightmare stemmed from something like that? I'm not the biggest believer in dream analysis anyway but thought it might be helpful.

If I remember right, I think I've read that the rat is a common figure in alcoholic induced psychosis as well. Not saying you are crazy or were a drunk at nine years old. Just that the rat is a prevelant figure in that scenario. Che has a good point though. Most recurring dreams and such stem from a traumatic event that your subconscious clings too.

It is cool to know that there definitely was an overcoming point and you no longer dream of it.

There is no such thing as dream psychology. Psychology is an academic discipline and dream-interpretation has absolutely no foundations in research.

Regardless of what your own personal beliefs are, there is absolutely no conclusive data to explain dreams. Psychoanalysts, dream interpreters, or whoever will tell you they mean this or that but the reality is that there's no basis for their claims.

The most accepted theory, as far as I'm aware, is that whatever neurons were particularly active during the day previous to when you were sleeping will continue to fire off randomly. I find that theory very flawed, but I reckon it's as close as we have available to the truth.

When it comes to dream interpretation books, let's put it this way: They have to be getting their information from somewhere, but anyone with any knowledge of psychology knows that it couldn't be based on research because there's very little research available in this area. Logically, the only way they could have come up with the information in these books is by pulling it out of their arses.

    Reminds me of this movie.

I rarely ever had nightmares, but I used to wake up and see centipedes crawling all over my pillow or giant spiders coming down at me from above. At times I would literally jump out of bed to avoid them. It was just the shadows or my eyes adjusting to the light, probably.

It also happened with a roach once. It was crawling around my cheek and ear, but that ended up being real. Leaped out of bed halfway across the room and slept on the living room couch for the rest of the night. Bugs suck.

Isn't this just a case of night terrors? They're quite common among children at that age. My brother had them; he used to wake screaming, and then run to my parent's bedroom. Eventually (1-2 years) they settled down and stopped.

I very much disagree with nix about dreams not having meaning. I have interpreted quite a few of my own to find they accurately presage events, or is that just my will subconsciously forcing them to fit? I also get a lot of Deja Vu.
I did have a tonberry dream. He was chasing me, I grew wings, alighted to the tip of a building and shot it with a cool-looking bow. No idea about a rat, though. Creepy.

Seems you didnt understand my post.. At all..

Of course YOUR dream may sometimes make sense to you, its your brain, it is the only self state in which your unconscious mind (subconscious for all you yanks that need to constantly alter the english language) can communicate to you.

However for "dream analysts" to tell people that for example, a rat represents survival, or alcoholic induced psychosis There is no basis for making claims like that as they are pulling it out of their ass whoever made it up.. Heck just check those silly internet sites and you will find the symbols your looking up will have a total different meaning on the next site you go to, you may aswell be taking horoscopes seriously if you believe that shiz..

Being in a relaxed state of mind is the only way your unconscious mind can communicate to you, if your looking to speak to it, id advise writing down a bunch of questions, going to a shrink that specialise's in hypnosis and ask him to hypnotise you and ask the questions

That is if you're one of the few that can be hypnotised, otherwise keep second guessing your crazy dreams, or just use your conscious mind like me

Again this doesnt mean every dream has meaning, again, its all just speculation.

Also my comment about neurons being active during the day and firing off randomly in my sleep seems very accurate. Like i hardly ever remember my dreams, and the first one i remember in ages was the other day, i was a counter terrorist agent chasing down terrorists to disarm a nuke.

What had i been watching alot of that day and the days running up to it? The TV show 24

Basically what nix is saying is that even if you played Starcraft2 all night and you had dreams about Starcraft2, it doesn't mean that you love Starcraft2, it just means that your brain thought about it so much before bedtime that you're dreaming about it. There has been LITERALLY 0% of studies which suggest that anything your brain rambles on about during this state of mind called "dreaming" that have anything to do with anything. So until someone is like, I think only of Miranda and I have dreams of Miranda and we fall in love in our dreams and sometimes we have sexy sex and some scientist studies it and publishes a report, nix is gonna tell you that you're a ****ing idiot for thinking you're in love with Miranda.

    Re: My nightmare

Well this is the most common dream and you have found the most common solution.

Its when people have these reccuring dreams specifically about something chasing them.

Eventually the person may experiance "lucid dreaming". it can take the form of actual lucid dream or believeing you are in control inside the dream but your not.

When this happens you have the oppertunity to change it, when you do every dream you have of it after that will be changed (if you dream of it after that at all, which is usually defined by how well you do in that dream at conquering the person following you).

Eventually the importance of the dream diminishes and then ceases to exist and im not sure why the importance of the dream diminishes (your confidence in this case?)

    Its very common.

I don't think dreams can be analysed. They may have some striking similarities to events in your life (both past, present and future), but that doesn't mean your dreams had that kind of meaning. It's like horoscopes - they're vague enough for people to see similarities, but actually hold no meaning. The only sense of "meaning" you can get from a dream is the thing that made you have that dream in the first place - that "thing" can be anything from a shadow to something you'd smelt that day.

I had loads of nightmares involving fire when I was a kid. I still have them sometimes. I stemmed from the hate of seeing my parents lighting the fire in the lounge - the fire would just shoot up from nowhere in the hearth, and the sound and sight would frighten me. I've had dreams of my house, favourite belongings, and friends and family going up in flames, and I always awake sobbing.

    Weird, because now I like playing with fire lol. >>;

Well that doesnt seem weird at all once I thought about it. Your lack of understanding about fire and its element only allowed you to see its destructive side. Now you understand it more you recognize its usefullness and its no longer something that frightens you.

    one thing I didnt understand.

why were your parents lighting a fire in the lounge?

Hmm, sounds like two people just analysed some dreams here. I don't think anyone is saying that if you dream about a house fire, the next day your house will light on fire. That's silly. (Just using your fire topic; no relation to your dream). But you can definitely be like "oh I probably dreamed that because of something I did that day". Whether or not that MEANS anything is up in the air.

Everyone else thought it was weird lol. My brother loved sitting by the fire when he was that age, and I wouldn't go near it. I always thought the room would explode, haha. It was the cause of many a sleepless night.

We have a gas fire in our lounge. Like a fireplace? Not as fancy or lovely as a hearth, but it does the same thing.

Our one is old. When I was a kid, we had a different one which didn't have a constant "pilot light", so we had to release the gas and then light a match into it.
