Songs that remind you of your past.

We all have them. You know the ones. The ones that ae you stop and remember the good times. The bad times. The songs that stick out and make you want to live the days from years past.

The songs that make you cry, laugh, and remeness about what is gone and can never get back. You know those songs.

Ones like this one for me: YouTube - the freshman - the verve pipe

I want to know what songs hold those meanings to you and if you can explain why.

"blow up the outside world" - soundgarden
i was one of those angry teenagers who thought the world was against them. kidding...sorta. when i was 17, i had my first bout of depression that ended up sticking around for a while. i think it was the music video to said song that really hit me hard at the - i felt as if i was suppose to follow this predestined track for the rest of my life but i could never find it. i felt very alone for the next year and a half.

    "sin" - nine inch nails
always use to listen to that song before a track race.

not a song but the album "so much for the afterglow" - everclear
it came out around the time i started middle school and it always reminded me of when i was trying to figure out who i am. up until that point, i had been home schooled so going to a "real" middle school was kinda scary. i never had to sit in a desk before or do homework. still to this day, this album remains one of my all time favorites.

music has been a big part of my sanity growing up, so im sure i'll have a few more replies later when im not tired.

    Fastball - The Way

Song hit the summer I left my first school I attended from K-6 and the 8th grade class used it as "their song"

    Vitamin C - Graduation

Song was popular my 8th grade year, and like everyone else in 2000, we used it as "our song" so it always reminds me of that summer before I started high school, and the redonkulous nerves I had going into a St. Louis city public high school.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under the Bridge

Loved this song as a kid, and I remember listening to it a LOT when I was younger. This was one of the first songs I can remember getting addicted to.

A few years ago a friend of mine kept playing songs like that Ben Folds song about an abortion, or Colorblind by... someone, because his girlfriend at the time had gotten an abortion, so those songs remind me of all that drama (the kicker is he later found out, after paying HER the cash for it, that it wasn't even his kid)

and, of course, I'm sure whatever song is the first dance at my fiancee and I's wedding will remind me of our wedding day. =P

The list is HUGE, though... I have a lot of memories tied to a lot of songs. Something about music in general makes it very easy to attach thoughts, feelings, emotions, and memories to.

    Iris - Goo Goo Dolls

This is a really beautiful song. I always listened to it because it would be the one song that I would dedicate to a girl. I had this mad crush on this one girl during middle school. She was one of the popular kids and I always wished that she would notice me rather than the more popular guys.

Re: Songs that remind you of your past.

'My Way' by Limp Bizkit. It was the first single I ever bought out of my own money, and everytime I hear it it reminds me of when I was a kid. I was 10 when this came out.

'In The End' by Linkin Park. Again, reminds me of when I was a kid.

'In The Shadows' by The Rasmus and 'You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison' by My Chemical Romance. Everytime I hear them, they remind me of the best year of my life, which was 2004. I was 14, in year 9 at school, where it didn't matter about learning. Everyone has that rebellious time, and this song reminds me of that.

And finally, 'Sorry You're Not A Winner' by Enter Shikari. A few years ago, when I was doing my first year of A-Levels, my Geography class went to Germany. I pretty much had the album, especially this song, on repeat for the week. So every time I hear it, I am reminded of my time there.

Re: Songs that remind you of your past.

Lots of songs from the mid to late 90's will make me reminisce sometimes, since that was about the time that I first started getting into music.

Stuff by the Backstreet Boys, 'N sync, and other boy bands like that remind me of my junior high years because lots of girls were really gaga over them. And so was I. I remember that some of the guys would dance in the hallways, trying to emulate their moves. Hahahaa... Oh man... Looking back, it was pretty ridiculous, but it was fun.

Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls was my favorite song for a looong time. It doesn't particularly remind me of any event, but I get a nice feeling when it plays.

    Saturdays/I Get It - Chevelle

idk why but this song reminds me of high school/summer after I graduated lol, probably because I had Vena Sera playing a lot while driving around and stuff.

    Wasn't Me - Shaggy

This song is like 6th grade for me hahaha, for some reason we were playing this in my homeroom one time so that is why it reminds me of the good ol middle school days.

    Digital Love - Daft Punk

This was me senior year in HS. I remember working on a British Literature project/movie thing to Discovery.

That's all I can think of now.
    ------

And yes, I do remember Sean being the go-to guy about anything RHCP. Idk why but I remember you talking about their greatest hits album on the forums and how it lacked certain songs (seriously though why would they not put Don't Stop on it, still mind-boggling to this day) and how you really loved the song Fortune Faded.

    Good times!

Let's see um.... Self Esteem-The Offsprings reminds me of my most recent life. Also I'm one of those people who say that anything early 90's reminds me of my life.

Since I listen to alot of Nirvana, many of their songs remind me of stuff I did when I first herd the songs. Granted...it's mostly just me playing videogames at home, still fond memories.

The Whole album Re-Load by Metallica
My GF at the time, Jennifer, had an awesome idea of making Love while listening to the album, it was the first time for both of us. Granted, we might have made it through 2 songs, maybe 3.

Kinda sticks in your mind, even though its been 12 years or so.

Sorry if its inappropriate, I was just being honest.

    Another: Moon Baby by Godsmack

When this song came out, I was dating a girl named Sarah, and we both LOVED the song. She was a witch, I'm serious, not kidding. I didn't care then, her religion didn't mean much to me, she was awesome. Anyway, she was the most caring person I have ever dated. We had a lot in common, I still have feelings for her, and its been 8 years since we broke up. When I hear that song, I wonder what could have been if circumstances would have been different.

Re: Songs that remind you of your past.

Bizarre Love Triangle by New Order will always have an association with driving to and from North Dakota in our grandparent's motor home back in the Summer of '93. There was this kangaroo character that took formation in my head around then too. Anyone who's read my stupid comics might know who this is. [Would take this bit out completely, except there's such a strong association between him, the song, and the time-the 8/15/12 me censoring the 12/12/10 me]. Also, for the longest time I counted it as my "favorite song." Maybe I still do. Dunno.

Run to the Sun and Fingers and Thumbs by Erasure will always remind me of driving to or from California back when my big bro lived down there. Fingers and Thumbs also has an association with the end of my 6th Grade Year and reading "End Game," the 4 Parter of Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog that originally was intended to be the end of the series.

Live Forever by Oasis reminds me of the Summer of '96 and playing Warcraft II all the time. Also, sharing my room with both my big bros. That was a fun Summer, particularly since my eldest bro hadn't stayed at home for a couple years. Then they both moved out the next Summer.

Pretty much the entire album of Futures by Jimmy Eat World reminds me of college, and also of a particular trip to the coast where I had a runny nose and watched Cats Don't Dance and Gangs of New York for the first time. Also, the album Mmhmm by Relient K. Borders and Boundaries and Anthem albums by Less Than Jake and Problematic by ALL remind me of walking around and riding the city bus during that time, too. (Can't find any videos of songs from that ALL album, unfortunately. They're not particularly popular, I suppose.)

Birdhouse in your Soul by They Might Be Giants reminds me of the early 90's and Tiny Toons (which did music videos of Partical man and Istanbul (Not Constantinople) from the same album.)

...this is the last one I'll do. Girl, Why'd You Run Away? by Reggie and the Full Effect will always remind me of walking home from a friend's house at like 2 AM on my first night back from my second Summer at Yellowstone. Reggie in general will probably always remind me of working at North Albany Middle School, and walking to the house I was housesitting way out in North Albany one Summer (and calling my mom to ask if she'd come get me, because I didn't want to walk all the way back, heh.)

So much music! So little desire to go over any more of it! (And probably anyone else to read about it once it's written.) Anyhoo....

    Wuv, Yer Mom

EDIT: Nowhere on this list did I mention anything by Five Iron Frenzy, and that is unacceptable. Though they don't really remind me of a specific time... except for right after highschool and right before college and during my first semester. Life was changing, a best friend was leaving for the air force, they were breaking up as a band, I had my wisdom teeth removed... Gah, that wasn't the best of times, heh. It wasn't terrible times either though.

I'll be honest, when I was twelve I didn't have playmate posters or metal posters. I had little pictures of famous music composers that I taped to my wall. But if we're not talking classical music...then we can do this easily. I just need one song.

    That.
That's why I'll try to keep it short: The late 80's and the 90's. Really. That's about it. There is nothing much to say.

For example, lots of songs by the band Dune remind me of myself singing in my room in front of my radio when I was still young (and didn't understand the lyrics).

"Zombie" by The Cranberries will always remind me of:
    a) my family driving to my grandmother. My mother always had cassettes in her car consisting of the latest music on the radio - and that song was one I always heard. It's the same as "What's Up?" by the Four Non Blondes. It was just playing EVERY TIME in the car.
    b) my brothers playing table tennis on New Year's Eve. They sang it pretty... PRETTY loudly. Somehow the song's become a kind of "song of my brothers and me". :>

As for my sister, I really don't want to say what SHE listened to. XD Really bad pop of a pretty famous singer... at least back then. I don't even remember her real name. ^^"

There are so many songs... I began listening to them all again, half a year ago, because I needed my past back then. I had lots of stress and it was really great to have the feeling of being young again. :> I can recommend doing that.

" I don't Wanna Miss a Thing" by Areosmith. This song reminds me of how depressing the end of Armageddon was, also reminds me why I got involved into Areosmith, and it reminds me of how that if I could sing a song to someone I cared about, that would be the song at the top of the list, just because it is perfect, not wanting to miss a thing while in love, now how many songs these days actually point that out in their lyrics? like none, haha. This song is just plain amazing!

I really didnt get too much into 1-3, I got about halfway through 6, didnt play 9 that much, and played 12 at a friends house.

"Dancing Queen" by ABBA. my (late) gran would play it in the car as she took me to pre-school everyday, its funny because i only ever think about those times clearly when it's playing.

"November Rain" by Guns N' Roses. Reminds me of my early teen years when i'd sit in my room and listen to this song on repeat over and over again. The only song that gives me a lump in my throat when i hear it.

Re: Songs that remind you of your past.

Love's in Need, Joy, and Don't leave me by Blackstreet all remind me of playing FFIII for SNES for some reason lol, probably because my uncle would have the song on replay while he coached me through the first couple levels of the game..

No woman, no cry, How many mics, ready or not by the Fugees all remind me of playing Chrono Trigger for the SNES lol, same reason as above, hearing the song always takes me back...

Anything from Trapt's First Album reminds me of this girl I dated while I was stationed in korea.. probably because a few of their songs came on one day at the club and she did this really weird dance to the songs and for some reason that dance has been stucked in my head and hearing any of their songs takes me back to think about how silly she looked..

Utada Hikaru, BoA, and just about any anime soundtrack takes me back to the time I was station in Korea, working night's with the Korean Air Force, and hearing them bug me to play certain songs. After a while, all I ever played while working with them was something from Hikaru, BoA or any anime soundtrack.

Likewise listening to the Lord of the Rings Soundtrack and certain Anime soundtracks brings me back to the days I was in Tech School Training when I first joined the military... even know when I hear them, I think of when I'd be in my room playing the game with the song going on in the background...

    Good Times..

For me it's Lady Gaga - Speechless.

Reminds me of my first love, and the breakup that followed. It left me very depressed, even though i broke it off, and now we're the best of friends 5 years later :') even though the lyrics for Speechless are written about Gaga's father, they fit into my feelings.

One of my favourite songs is I was only nineteen
Written and played by Redgum recounts the stories of the Vietnam veterans and what is going on through the minds when they train for war go to war and even the psychological problems they have when they return.

Tru Blu by John Williamson is another one that makes me feel all gooey and mushy inside, a staple song on every Aussies playlist.

Re: Songs that remind you of your past.

This kind of thing is hard for me because I relate music entirely to periods of my life. If I were to write an auto-biography, every chapter title would be a song. Here are a few, and typing these out is the purest form of reminiscing for me, I love it.

Elvis Presley - Make Me Know It
My roommate had a record player that I moved to our living room when I brought a stack of records here from my mom's attic. That one that really tickled my fancy was Elvis. At the time, (last June and July or so), I was doing video for a major radio company, met a bunch of artists, had enough money in the bank that I could party hard and not give a ****, and was surrounded by the best friends I could ever ask for. Not that I'm doing THAT bad right now, but last summer was the best time of my life and this song was my anthem.

    Eve 6 - Promise
It was a big hit when I was in 6th grade and if I trace my music taste back to its roots, this would be the first song that I discovered on my own that kickstarted my musical conquest. When I listen to it, it still has that level of mystery of like, "Woooow so this is the stuff that rockstars make." Eve 6 had a questionable career, but that song is immortal to me, even if I don't listen to anything at all similar to it anymore.

The song that reminds me of my childhood would be:
Eric Prydz - Call On Me - YouTube

Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

Okay, there are a few songs that do this for me... some of them are absolutely ridiculous coming from me, but I don't care.

This song always seemed to be on at the batting cages down in Five towns when I was a kid. I loved going to the cages with my little league teams, and with my dad, and just hitting the crap out of the ball. Things were simple and good back then; the biggest concern was making sure my homework was done and that it was done before practice. Sometimes I'll still go to the cages, play this song on my ipod and just be in my glory.

Pretty much the entire RHCP album "By the Way". It reminds me of how much fun I had the summer it was released. It had to have been in my cd player for months straight. I would listen to it nonstop, laying out in the sun at my grandmas house, bbqing over there almost every weekend with my parents, driving past this girls house who I had a massive thing for back in sophomore and junior year of hs. Good times, but a little bittersweet.

I love this song! It's another one from those carefree summers of high school. I don't remember when my friend got his license, but this song would always play at least once in his car when he came to pick me up. Now that I think about it, it's the same summer as the Chili Peppers album, when I started to come out of my post 9/11 depression and general haze I was in.

This album came out right as I graduated from High School, and this song, while about drug addiction, came to lead me to the decision to break up with my high school girlfriend, as I was starting college about four hours upstate. I remember sitting on a bus... the bus that did the rounds to the prisons up there, coming back from freshman orientation and just meeting so many awesome people and having just an amazing time. I maybe listened to it 10 times in a row, and it just seemed like the right decision to make. She didn't take it too well, and started stalking me and camping outside of my house, calling me to come down so we could talk. It was rough, but it was worth it in the long run.

This song became an anthem for me when I was in the process of breaking up and fighting with my other, more infamous ex, "Hurricane." I took a lot out of it and it really gave me the inspiration to finally say **** it and walk away. It was also played a lot during the glorious summer of 2007, when I played softball for hours every weekend, none of us had any money, but we made the most of everything. I absolutely loved everything about that summer, and I still consider it to be the best summer in the history of ever.

Uh, I guess that would probably be Disney movie tunes and stuff from movies (I was utterly glued to the set) U_U'
