It could be discussed all day. Some part of me hoped it would end with Obama, but it hasn't. I suppose that was naive of me. But then again, that's what you get when the world turns unipolar for a bit: they're the biggest, the strongest, they can be arseholes as much as they like. Ugh. Hate it. Though I don't think their successor/s is/are going to be any better. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Costa Rica has 99% literacy and numeracy. They don't have a military. At all. What an idea.

Re your homeless man: things are always better when we work together. Giving him bread might feed him for a day; volunteering for a shelter or a soup kitchen will do that for hundreds. There has to be a volunteer centre in Wellington. Do you have the Big Issue there?

I really disagree with you. But I see where it's coming from.

We live in huge societies. It's hard to make life fair for everyone. All we can do to help the poor and let the rich be rich is make socialist inspired laws.

Besides, there's always going to be more talented, intelligent, lucky people in every free society.

I'd say freedom is too high a price to pay for eliminating the possibility of poverty.

Which doesn't mean we should stop trying to make the world a better place for everyone. But the problems we're facing in our society are peanuts compared to some regions in the world.

But yeah, I know what you mean. Life's a bitch to some people, all we can do is make sure everyone is being taken care of, has health insurance, is backed by their government and can choose who's in charge in their country.

Europe is a sweet place to live, compared to the US. And I'm not even talking about all the war and aids in the world.

And as much as I hate to admit that you're more leftist than I am, I think you're right.
