Absolutely amazing film that keeps you captivated from begining to end. It is very strange and eerie, with beautiful cinematography. The second one is good too. One of the many great Asian horrors which have had aweful Hollywood remakes. Ringu and Dark Water were also great Japanese horror movies which were destroyed in such a bad way!
Since a lot of you are talking about Ghibli films, I have to say that my favorite of those is Princess Mononoke. It's the first one I ever saw, and I still watch it with as much as interest as I did the first time. The story is lovely, and the animation is stunning.

*Ghost in the Shell (Hard to explain in short/ Cyber anime.)
Live Action:
*Battle Royale (High school children forced to fight each other to the death due to increase in juvenile crime rate and inflation.) Stars Tatsuya Fujiwara (Death Note the live action film)
*The Happiness of the Katakuris (Wierd ass musical/comedy/horror-spoof)

Battle Royale is really good, but like most films adapted from books, I do prefer the book. It is really well done though, definatly a must-watch. I haven't seen The Happiness of the Katakuris, but it does look very odd! May have to order it as i've never seen it in the shops. Thanks for reminding me about that one!

The are quite few that I really like, for instance both Vampire Hunter D movies (haven't included the live action movie for obvious reasons) although I prefer Bloodlust the sequel due to it's voice acting which was simply goddamn awful in the first one.
I also like Fullmetal Alchemist Conqueror of Shamballa, nothing strange since I'm big fan of both manga and anime. Apple Seed was also great, not much for the story as for the visual appearance.
As for the studio Gibli's work I only watched Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, needless to say that both are really great. Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade is another ones that comes to my mind, one of the first anime movies I've seen.

Yeah if you like wierd but also tasteful craziness then it's a worthy investment.
The FMA film is awesome, I forgot about that. Appleseed is cool too, though the second is worth avoiding as the voice acting is terrible (don't think it has original Japanese w/ subtitles) and the story is even worse. Never seen Jin-Roh but there are so many times I've come close to buying.
Good thing it's not any asian films in general (although harder for choice) as I think I'd have chose between Battle Royale and Oldboy or one of the others from the Vengeance trilogy (Korean).

Most Japanese movies I've seen were/are anime movies. I really should watch more live-action ones though. I did used to watch the old Godzilla movies, but that was mostly because my older brother was a fan.No, they aren't among my favorites either.
I've loved all Studio Ghibli films that I've watched, and I'm on a mission to see them all. If I absolutely had to choose my favorites among them, then I choose Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Howl's Moving Castle.
I also enjoyed the Cowboy Bebop movie. Watched that some time after the series ended, and it was nice to see the Bebop gang in action again.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Akira yet. Maybe it's too dark for some people? I really liked it. For as old as it is, I think it aged very well, and the story is definitely unique.

That is why I love Japanese and Korean horror so much more than Hollywood ones- they are bloody eerie! They also don't have the predictable storyline with a "happily ever after" ending either. Damn I don't know how I forgot about Howl's Moving Castle that's one of my favorite films in general. (Christian Bale is a damn good actor too).
I love Ju-On, I got the boxset. I dislike the American remakes it loses it's charm by making it lighter and trying to explain too much rather than leaving it to viewers imagination. This is very true! I do love The Grudge 1 + 2 (in English and Japanese, however the Japanese one was slightly better), but The Grudge 3 was somewhat lacking. Also, there's something strangely beautiful about Kayako o_OJu-on: The Grudge.

Few more movies crossed my mind early this morning while I was trying to get some sleep.
Ninja Scroll, anime was decent the movie is no different, actually the movie reminds me a lot of an anime called Basilisk, those who watched both should know what I mean. I'm eager to see how's DiCaprio going to pull of a decent live action movie, I'm hoping that this will be first anime based movie that doesn't suck entirely.
As some have already mentioned Cowboy Bebop is another great movie, besides the movie I really like the tittle as Knocking on Heaven's Door is one of my favorite songs, shame though the song wasn't included into soundtrack.
Another good one is Vision of Escaflone A Girl in Gaia, I must say those who watched the anime first will appreciate this movie much more.
Although I'm big fan of Naruto, primarily the manga, the three movies I watched didn't struck me as good ones, the only one worth mentioning is the Snow Princess. Same case with Bleach, the only difference is that I don't really like Bleach. I watched two movies, Diamond Dust Rebellion is the only one I like solely because Toshiro is my favorite character.
The ones I remember but I want to forget as soon as possible are the most Dragonball movies and the Fist of the North Star which in my opinion is the worst movie I've seen so far.

I loved the series of Escaflowne, but the movie didn't have the same appeal for me. In fact, I greatly hated what was done in the movie. Actually, it's not my favorite so don't worry about it, overall I think it's a good movie, worth watching but then again I never was a big fan of Vision of Escaflone to begin with so the changes didn't bother me that much. I find those changes kinda amusing, this may sound strange but somehow it reminded me of Star Trek, in few episodes of Voyager and the new Enterprise they completely change crews personality almost in the same way as in Vision of Escaflone, so basically I'm used to seeing this already.
But I must admit you got point there Dodie, especially when it comes to the characters. It all comes to how much you like the changes they made.

but its hard to stop watching anime after we fall in love with the producer...not literally but their intelligence is so irresistable! oh so you are into japanese "films"...yah i've heard of seven samurai but i never got a chance to watch it. apart from that, i watched quite a lot of films too but i cant exactly remember which one to tell you the name.... the thing about japanese films is that it gets really serious and they start cutting people up and torturing them. its really hard to watch films like that. i'm not saying for ALL the films just some that i've watched. you should give anime a chance...and maybe i'll watch seven samurai next.

I totally forgot about Seven Samurai's, I watched it with my dad when I was just a brat, can't remember a thing though except that they fought for some rice, maybe I should see it again. There's an anime with the same tittle, the story is somewhat similar despite the mecha style.
