Thread: 300: Worth the Hype?

  1. #31
i dunno about the movie isself but the story behind it sounds interesting. 300 spartans against thousands of enimies. hoplessly outnumbered but doing wat they can. and when they said they would balck out the sun with arrows. they spartans in history really did say then we will fight in the dark. its a very good story to tell and they did good for being outnumbered the way they were. but i think the movie could be worth seing.

  2. #32
yeah its worth it two thumbs up its a great movie.

How historically innacurate do you mean?

Of course, they don't know about everything that happened or whatnot, and at best it's their "idea" of what happened, but I'm pretty sure that there was actually a King Leonidas who stood up to the Persian Army with only 300 men.

    That said,

I adored this movie. The cinematography was incredible, and hey... nothing wrong with watching incredibly buff men run around in loincloths for 2 hours.

Great, great movie. I'll be seeing it again!

I went watching the film yesterday with a few of my mates and all i can say is that we loved it. Sure there were some bits that people turned away (unlike me who just drooled from the violence ) but still it was an awesome fill. I don't see why some people think its rubbish (no offence to you people).

I'd have to disagree with that. There was a storyline to it that was put in throughout the film. Its the story of 300 spartans vs over million persians. So basicly its a a story about a battle and what happened in the eyes of the director.

And while the scenery was a thing of beauty some of the fighting didn't look all that realistic. Characters in the movie lacked uniquities like that which you see in real life fights.
True the effects of the environment and scenery were done to a almost perfect standard, flawless in my opinion. however the fighting did seem realistic to me. You say the soldiers lacked uniquities, well that is true. However thats what you get for bringing up and army in the say old fashioned way. No one had different training.

I think most of the girls that came a long did enjoy that. Still there was a lot of flesh shown by both men and women throughout that film.

Thermopylae was named a shitload of times, don't moan that it ain't mentioned. unless shit is edited in america.

Eitherway I saw the movie today finally and I loved, pure epicness. awesome action, nice evil stuff. For the type of movie the storyline wasn't all that bad either, but yeah you go for the action mainly..which was damn awesome.

Everyone clearly missed the obvious point of this film.

At the end when the Spartans are being outnumbered and are about to be attacked, the king asks for one of his men to come speak with him. (cant remember names since its been a while, sorry).

Anyways, this man was asked to speak with the king because he had a talent better than the rest of the spartans. His talent was story telling, he was asked to run back to the city and tell them everything that happened. All the events, all the 'monsters' were exagerations made by the story teller himself.

The persians viewed their kings almost as gods, hence the huge persian king and his almost immortal appearance. The spartan storyteller added everything he saw and more.

    Anyways,cheers.Haha.

I just saw the movie tonight at a dollar theater. Never in my life have I been so insulted.

There was nothing redeeming about this movie. Every character was archetypal. The backgrounds were ridiculous, the entire color scheme. The acting was as bad as I have ever seen.

"They look thirsty." "So lets give them something to DRINK!"

I wasn't expecting much, but I was still disappointed. The worst part was the allusion to Jesus at the end. (A lot of the people that liked the film probably didn't catch it.)

the movie was amazing i thought. how could you not like this movie? the only people who didn't like this movie probably would be the peace lovers. the only thing that disturbed me was that all the spartans were always in their underwear.

Well personally, I thought it was an awesome film! I mean c'mon, who cares about any historical inaccuracies, or lack of storyline, or 'unrealistic moments'.

Myself, I judge a film by how it makes me feel inside. When this film ended I was all up for grabbing my sword and cape, joining the army and running down and kicking the s*** out of the Persians! I was filled with a macho energy. Plus I found myself speaking the same way that did in the film.
"Aah, it's only an eye, god blessed me with a spare!" and "Then we will fight in the shade" etc.

So going by my way judgement, this film was awesome. Those of you who are so penickety - who watch a film saying the whole time "that wouldn't happen" or "man, that's unrealistic" - are missing out on the whole point of a film. It is not to see something realistic - if I wanted to watch something realistic I'd go sit in my front garden and watch people walk past. No, the whole point of watching a film is to enjoy it! So just relax and yet yourself be enjoyed!

This film was awesome. End of.

I really can't be bothered with people who go on about the films inaccuracies and say they didn't enjoy the film because of it. No problems with people who have a laugh and joke about bits that were wrong, but still sat through the film completely glued to its sheer awesomeness.
It was an action movie people, not a biographical or history film.
If you don't like a film it should be because the film sucked, or wasn't to your taste.
To be honest alot of arguements I've heard against 300 are the equivilant of saying I'm against Spiderman 'cos that kind of thing doesn't happen in science.
My opinion of the film is that it's the best cinema film I've seen all year, not best film Hot Fuzz takes that honour, but the best film to go to the cinema to watch, I don't think it'll be the same watching it in on a small screen.
Plus I think quite a few people were disapointed with it because it was pushed that it was from the same makers of Sin City too much.

I LOVED IT!!!!! the movie was historicaly correct,300 spartans did take on 20,000 persians in the gorge and won,King Leonidas did take his men and died at the end,But the rest of the Spartan army did kill the rest of the of the invading armies. the saddest part though, was when the Captains son died......But the graphics were amazing and the the Spears and shields were accurate, they used 9ft. spears and they really did make formations to block enemy attacks.

p.s.the wolve seen was real too,he really did that.

ok i started to read all of the previous pages and i am just going to ignore all of it because it seems like useless banter. so instead i will just give my honest opinion.
i watched this film for the 6th or 7th time and i have to say that, even though it didnt persicly follow the turn of events in history this is still a great movie.

the action in this movie was great, smooth, and you can usually see everything that is going on in the frame, which i loved. most films just focus on the front runner but 300 panned out and focused on brutal bloodshed wide screen style, rarely just focusing on 1 or 2 characters score 10/10.

the score of the film was amazing, i was supprised at the diversity of music in the film. score 8.5/10.

the visuals of this film are breathtaking, i would love to take some of the scenery of 300 and paint the walls of my appartment using the backdrops. eventhough they do look CGI generated at times. i can say for eye candy purposes this film gets a perfect 10/10

acting! sucked hahaha j/k the acting in this film wasnt bad but it wasnt great by anymeans, there where high points in which i was motivated to stab someone in the face with a huge spear and other moments when iwas just nehhh but over all i think the actors did a greaet job with the formations and overall convinging me that they where spartan soldiers. character movement and fighting was like that of a well oiled machine and ive got to give them props for that. so all in all for just acting purposes i give it a 6/10 but mix in the charater fighting portayals and its bumped to a 9/10

the story is what i expected, 300 VS 10s of thousands. not much more you can do with it unless you want to seriously try to change history and piss off a bunch of people (more then they appearently did) who want a movie to be the exact reoccurance of what really happened. but over all i am not going to judge this movie on the comparison to history i am going to base it off the fact that it is a MOVIE. i loved the conspiricies that played out in sparta while the 300 where gone was about typical but well played out. the 3rd person perspective was great but also a little on the stupid side because
    Spoiler:
he tells you exactly what happened even though he has no idea because at that point he had already left the battle front

but all n all id have to give the film..... 8.5/10!

uncaught blooper - did you catch it - when in the battle where they "fight in the shade" did you notice that leonitus threw his spear and starts fighting with his sword but when he comes back up from hiding he breaks the arrows off his sheild with dun nuh nuh nuhhhh his spear! wow hes good. magical recalling/appearing spear move or changing sword to spear move!!!!!!!

Haaaahahahaha the peace lovers. You dirty peace lovers! That's why you didn't LOVE it. It didn't have anything to do with the bad acting, the ridiculous writing, or awkward sex/nudity scenes.

I'm all about some simulated movie sex, but that was just god awful. They tried to make it all epic and slowed it down, but it just came off as comical and uncomfortable.

The writing was... so silly. El Wray gave a rather nice example of that.

    The acting? Ahem.

That said, it was fun. Yeah, it's a fun movie. I've seen it twice now and it makes me laugh and I enjoy watching those HUGE man beasts leap up into the air with spears. And I liked watching the phalanx action. That was nice.

I didn't hate the movie. But it's definitely one of those movies you have to prepare for. I had to suspend all my knowledge of acting and screenwriting to see it. And when I did, it was fun.

The creepy deformed guy getting grinded on was still creepy, though. Ugh.

    I didn't like it.

I did find the cimematics interesting. That interested me, but that was about it.

"THIS IS SPARTA!!" What an overrated phrase! I didn't even bother to watch the whole thing, so my opinion may be void to fanboys and girls, but please, cut out my throat rather than make me sit through that again.

I missed a sex scene? An awkward one? That's a shame, I must've drifted off for a while whilst it was on, otherwise I would've made some cheesy audio to go with it. At least it would've improved the movie a little.

I think there is another aspect as to why this film is hurting the world.

Beowulf is my favorite story, so I was excited for the movie. What did I get?

    300: "This is Sparta!"
    Beowulf: "I am Beowulf!"

He kept screaming it over and over. Before Grendel even got his, I had taken off the 3D glasses and considered taking a nap. If I hadn't been in the middle of the aisle, I would have left.

I like the peace lover bit from a while back. Doesn't everyone love peace? Isn't war supposed to be the last resort?

just seeing that in the preveiws kept me and the wifey from seeing beowulf. it just seemed like to much of a rip off, but then again if they wanted the movie to betaken seriously they never should of casted angalina for any of the roles they just her for her name, thats all you really get with her except bad acting.... and shes not even that good looking either!
i liked the Christopher Lambert version of beowulf that was made in about 2000. you seen it Wray? little corney, low budget, if you havent dont go into exspecting it to hold true to the story and up to highlander standards. but check it out i figured they did a better job at it then the new one could

Haha Beowulf was the most retarded shit I've ever seen.

    SPOILER!!:
Hurdurdur I'll tell you about a swim race, SEA MONSTERS and a mermaid that we will NEVER COME BACK AND EXPLAIN. Grendel? What an annoying monster! I should fight it naked! Good thing there are oddly placed candles and heads of dead people to cover my most likely monstrous member. Speaking of monsters, Grendel's mom is a babe so instead of killing her, I did her. And then I was made king because Anthony Hopkins was a fat hobbit who killed himself for like... NO reason other than to put me on the throne. Yeah, I decided not to return home in this movie. I just married Hopkins's woman. Skip ahead a couple decades. Yeah, assholes, I'm like 65. Bet you didn't think you'd watch a movie about old ass Beowulf dealing with his queen who doesn't like him but actually loves him. Oh! Remember the dragon from the story? Yeah, well, it's actually my kid and I took out his HEART (HIS DRAGON HUMAN HEART) with my bare hands! And then we fell, and we were dying, when the ocean waaaaaashed away the scales and revealed a younger, very gold and very hairless me. Yeah, we want an Oscar so ****ing badly, we'll put one in our movie. I AM BEOWULF.

And yes, Chez, there was a really bad sex scene in 300. Greeks do it from behind, I don't know if you knew that. And boobs jiggling in slow motion... are kind of silly looking to be honest. They were just talking and then it was like... sex. With a soundtrack. I get that it was all... aw, they love each other so they'll do it one more time before he leaves! But... still. I'm sure it didn't take as long as I imagined it did, but when I was in the theater, I thought it would never end. Ever.

Boobs jiggling in slow motion. For some reason, I received an image that might've been seen in a really bad softcore porno which focused on slow motion boobies because looking at beefsticks and lovetunnels would just be RUDE.

I did watch about five minutes of softcore about three years ago, but I was so embarrassed I was actually watching it, I had to switch it off.

So pretty much failed atmospheric sex? Horrible horrible.

This has only worsened my opinion of 300.

personally im not much for pegan cultures. not to say that its bad or anything, thats just my personal opinion. Also not that 300 was a bad movie, i just wish it could have stayed a comic book. i liked the story and the action, but im more of a true story kind of person and not that i cared how acurate it was, i have had people come up to me and say things like," gee i didnt know the persians had giant rinos and a nubian king!" it just really annoyes me how easily people get fooled by hollywood.

I thought the exact same thing when I saw the previews for Beowulf.

I've never seen Beowulf. I pretty much intend to never, simply based on the fact that why bother showing the story if you arent' going to do it 100% to the original; and the original Beowulf story was amazing considering it's old as hell. I remember it was part of our assigned reading in my senior year of high school. Good times.

As far as 300 goes, I enjoyed the movie a lot. I went into it thinking it was 100% fantasy, and that it had not even a loose affiliation with actual historic events, then I came to find out that it was. The phalanx thing had me really intrigued, because I had remembered from some history class I took forever and a day ago that the Greeks used the phalanx and were nearly unstoppable because of it

I can't watch the movie Beowulf. I heard too many bad reviews on it. I've seen the original, so I'm satisfied with that. As far as 300. I TOTALLY LOVED IT!!!! Great Storyline, a little strange at parts. Xerxes wasn't supposed to be that tall but whatever. I still loved it. Definitely believe the hype 300 is the way to go.

    True love never dies!!

I thought that 300 was great. It was made as a rated-R action film, and definitely lived up to its purpose in the movie industry. The battle scenes were very memorable and you could get the feel of how badass all the spartans were just by taking one look at them. It was a very intense and entertaining movie, and I got my money's worth by seeing it in the theaters.

Then again this one is kind of on the outs with me if she doesn't straighten up and fly right so that means I will be back in it for the thrill of the kill. Got some in the reserves. Even got a rePETEr (<---- like that ay? AYYYYY?) on the back burner.

300 IMO was way overrated not so much as say, Halo is but close. My roommate was drooling over it for weeks before it came out, he described it to me and I thought it wouldn't be so bad...

I eventually went to see it and I ACTUALLY FELL ASLEEP, it is the only movie I have ever done that for in theaters! It wasn't for long, but the whole story was so poorly done. And boy, were the sex scenes awful in almost every way. There were those prophets where all I can say is "GROSS!" Then there was the whole "I'm leaving so lets have sex" that was so tacky (although they clearly tried to make it sensual and artistic). It seems fairly obvious they were trying to deflect the whole "Homo-vibe" of the rest of the movie. Even the "action" was far to over-the-top with crazy mythological beasts running everywhere and people with hundreds of different fighting styles being beaten by "the guys". Also the original story had slightly different odds too from what I've read/been described, the story had something like 300 vs 3000 (not entirely sure maybe 1 more 0) but the movie had 300 (eventually like 30) Vs a "bajillion-galiion" warriors and monsters... It's sickening how this movie gets reactions like people just blew their loads for it...

It has also got to the point where hearing "This is Sparta" makes me wanna stab pencils in my ears (It was funny for a short while but then...)
