Thread: The Old Skool Cult of Kefka, bitches!

Great pic you lucky bum you. This is the only thing to motivate me to get all my lazy butt and find a job again..money for games.

I'll definitely have to check out excite truck. Anything with the word "excite"in it is bound to be good if you ask me. Hell, if it's anything like excitebike i'm sure ill love it! Especially with the Wii controller.

Yeah i was reading about Trauma Center too..certianly sounds interesting. I'm sure that'll be a rent game for me to give it a try whenever i get a Wii.

And yeah, how could i forget about Halo 3 and Gears of War? Both look amazing and gears of war has been getting great reviews so i'm expecting nothing but good things from it.

Have fun with FF V and more importantly FF III though! That's the one title i haven't played, i usually keep myself updated in the emulation world but i didnt know there was a translation. I might just try to find a way to play the DS version instead. The commercials certainly make it look good. And from what Lady Cid said her in marathon thread, she said its her favorite out of the NES games. If it has the job system similar to V, but with better characters and a better story, it could easily make my top 5 FF games.

So any other next gen titles people are looking forward to?

I'm still working on catching my collection up on current/last-gen titles, considering I've gotta get me a new PS2 anyway to play what I already have, and I need to get several games for it as is.

Am I the only one finding it a little Ironic that the "old skool" cult is talking about the newest school on the block? XD

Hey, did I, or did I not say "It's really tough to divulge in old school conversations with so much new crap coming out all of a sudden. Between FFXII, the PS3 launch, and the Wii launch, I wouldn't be opposed if the Cult temporarily moved into discussions of new-gen items. It's a lot of stuff all at once, and we're all wrapped up with everything, so I certainly can't blame you for wanting to talk about it."?

    I'm pretty sure I did.

    {/grin}

Final Fantasy III is nifty. So far it's just like its NES counterpart, sans the three dimensionalness. I really like the way it looks, sounds, and feels. The touchpad is nice, too. It's how a Final Fantasy game on the DS should be.

I haven't played too much of it yet, so I can't really form any other opinion than that. The characters all remind me of Crystal Chronicles in the way they are designed, but at the same time, there's a familiarity of Tactics as well.

You lucky people, I have not seen FFIII in my gamestore at all and considering the fact that i'm in Australia and a small town maybe I never will. Also I unfortinately need to wait nearly 3 more week before the Wii come out here. But that is good for me as well, because right now I wouldn't be able to afford it I need that extra 3 weeks.

I am getting Zelda straight up and then Spore if it's out by the time I can afford a second game.

Yes, November has been a fantastic month for new games and systems being released! I'm still in shock over how great the companies have done for this holiday season. I am, however, very disappointed in the launch titles for the PS3. Not a single game on that list appeals enough to me to make me even CONSIDER throwing that kind of money down. The Wii, on the other hand, has about a half dozen titles that I'd love to get my hands on. The biggest of them being Metroid, Zelda, and SSB of course.

Come December, I get the chance to save 20% on any one item at Wal-Mart. Something tells me I might be getting myself a Wii for $200 at that point in time. Oh yes, that would be fantastic!

OLD SKOOL - A positive appellation referring to when things weren't flashy but empty of substance, were done by hard work, didn't pander to the lowest common denominator, and required real skill. Labour-saving devices, shortcuts that reduce quality and quitting before the task is done are not characteristics of "old skool."

In reference to computer games, refers to a game that had substantial playability without flashy graphics or eye candy. Old skool gamers appreciate difficult maneuvers, careful planning, and scorched earth policies.

In reference to role-playing games, old skool refers to games that tested players' wits, could kill off careless characters, and required dedication and inner strength to play. Old skool games didn't pander to the ideas that everyone is created equal, that all options are open to all races, that the markets were somehow free, and that a quasi-medieval society could have near 100% literacy.

I am incredibly proud to say that Square-Enix did NOT "dumb down" Final Fantasy III for the "stupid American gamers." In fact, I have yet to get the Mythril Ring (yes, I'm that early in the game, I just got it yesterday but spent more time playing FFV and FFXI) -- and despite this, I've already gotten two Game Overs and run from three battles.

The difficulty of the original title is definitely still there. Possibly even a wee bit harder. Maybe. Or maybe I was just being a little more careless.

The charm of the original is there as well. Even though everything is fancy and in three dimensions and I'm using a stylus to run around, it still feels like I'm playing it on the NES, and that's the most important thing.

The music is all the same, but cleaned up. It sounds amazing.

Oh, and the "cutscenes" for the game are gorgeous. The opening title scenes are just... wow. It looks like something straight out of FFT. Same character designs and everything. I'm really, really loving this game.

Not that I didn't love FFIII before. I'm just re-loving it. This official translation and re-release may actually move FFIII up on my list of favorite FF titles. For those who don't know, as it stands, my list of favorite FF games is as follows:

FFVI, FFT, FFIX, FFIV, and FFIII make out the top five, in that order. I don't list Final Fantasy XI along with the others not because it's "not a traditional FF game" (technically, Tactics isn't part of the "series" either), but rather because it's liable to take over the top spot if I do. It's a whole different type of beast. If we were to look at my overall top 25 games list, FFXI would be rather high on it. But I'm straying away from my original point, in that FFIII may be advancing through the ranks if these good feelings don't diminish. (Sorry Dawezy, FFIV may get bumped to fifth.)

Well, now that I'm done rambling...

(I think my Currently Playing has been made obvious by now.)

That's good to know, i'm really excited about trying to get my hands on that sometime soon. I think a lot of that old charm is what is missing from a lot of the recent titles for me, i feel like VII and VIII especially took themselves too seriously or something. Not that they are bad..just i don't know, doesn't have that same charm like some of the older titles. IX definitely brought back the charm with it's characters though.

Good list though..basically like mine. My top few are basically set in stone, my ones in the bottom i almost don't even feel like listing because i don't like them enough. I usually don't include tactics but since you did i guess i will.

    1. FF VI
    2. FF T
    3. FF IV
    4. FF IX
    5. FF 1

...1 and IX sometime will float around spots. Depends how i'm feeling. XII, so far (not quite done though i have a feeling i might be done tonight), will easily make my top 5, maybe even my top 3. As for III, like i said if it has the great job system, along with charming characters and an interesting storyline, and a good soundtrack (three things that i think V completely fell flat on), it could be up there as well. As far as i'm concerned, call me stubborn, but my number one spot will NEVER change.

Ah earthbound, psiko? What i like to ask, earthbound, great rpg, or greatest rpg? I love that game..i got a little disapointed when somebody called it a dragon quest clone! Sure it's 1st person battle system..but geez, earthbound is one of the most original, charming, and quirky rpgs i have ever played!

Hey azrafel, you may be interested in one of our recent topics before we went off on a new-gen discussion binge. We were talking about our favorite jobs from FFV, why we liked them, and if there was any particular character we preferred to have certain jobs on. I'd love to hear your opinion on the matter, man.

GLC (I don't care if you changed your name, I'm still going to call you that), if you thought you envied me before because I work at GameStop, just wait until now. So, as you and everyone else knows, I was officially hired on October 31 at 11:40pm, during the FFXII release party.

I've been in the store a lot, watching and learning. I've technically only worked one shift, but during that shift, I did more on my first day than most employees do, in terms of not only stocking the shelves (that's all most temporary employees ever get to do), but repping games, running a register, and doing trade-ins as well.

The assistant manager just called to give me my shifts for next week. He told me "not to get too excited because it's not official yet" and then proceeded to inform me that he and the store manager were thinking of training me to be the third key (basically, second assistant manager) because the guy who's in there now is an ex-manager who is temping until they find a replacement.

So... I'm trying not to be excited, but it's really difficult.

I'm not expecting it to happen though, so it's not like my hopes and dreams will be crushed if I'm not a manager after the holiday season. That doesn't mean I'm not giddy about it all the same.

Psiko. Friend. Old buddy. Old pal. Dude.

You and I need to talk soon. About stuff. Stuff I'd rather not mention in public view in fear I may be roped and stoned by the angry villagers. Silly cultists.

Ha, that's cool if you call me GLC, my intent in changing my name was too make things simpler, and GLC does it quite well.

Yeah, that's crazy you were hired like that! How did it all happen? Did you know anyone there or did you just start spitting some gaming knowledge? I've always wondered what it takes to work at a place like that..i feel like i'm qualified in terms of gaming knowledge but i'm not sure if you have to be like..i n the know with current employees or something

Yeah that's awesome about the promotion, or maybe you don't know if it's a true promotion yet but things are sounding great, so congrats! Haha yeah i'd definitely be excited if i were you too, but you're right it's always good to keep a level head about things JUST INCASE they don't work out. That way, if yo don't get it, you're not too let down, but if you, you're even more overjoyed. Regardless, things sound great for you thus far.

As for right now..still playing FF XII. i kinda screwed myself on a certain point and i'm not sure what to do..very long story.

Speaking of FF XII, i've been doing some interesting research. I guess i didn't know that the original concept creator/designer/producer Yasumi Matsuno actually left the project halfway through! He's really the man behind all the ogre battle games, ff tactics, and vagrant story. The people that took his place though were EXTREMELY capable though, one of the team members is actually the guy that created the ATB system, and all of their experience dates all the way back to the original FF nes title. Hiroyuki Itō, who took over as director has worked on almost all of the old school FFs, he was one of the directors of FF VI, and the event planner for Chrono Trigger.

What i found interesting is WHY he left, they stated it was because he was ill but a lot of sources say that square asked him to resign not only from the project, but then he left square all together. It sounds a bit too fishy to me, i wonder what happened? Somebody with such talent and pedigree to be asked to leave square? makes me scratch my head. Then, what i found most interesting though is that he is looking for developers to create games soley for the Wii. He stated he agrees with Wii's gameplay over graphics approach and he is very interested in making games for the system. Makes me excited too

I just got my PS2 back from a friend, so I may get FFXII anywhere between now and Christmas, depending on how much I want it, which, as of right now, isn't a major priority. Not too sure why, but I can wait. I did manage to play the DS version of FFIII for a little bit. I must say that I too am quite impressed by how it turned out. I'm a little annoyed how they changed the beginning a bit, but at the same time, it's nice that they gave the characters different personalities instead of just different colours schemes. Overall, I was quite impressed.

What I have done is neither old skool nor new skool. Yes, I had an urge and started up FFVII again, which I have for the PC. It brings back a lot of good memories, it does. So I've been mashing through that every change I get, which aren't very plentiful, but it gets done.

    CP:
    FFVII

    Edit: I'll post my list.

    1) FFT
    2) FF7 (yeah, yeah, so sue me)
    3) FF6
    4) FF4
    5) FF3

    Woo.

Two people with FF 7 as their second favorite? Haha let the old school whipping begin! Haha i'm just kidding, its all just a matter of opinion of course . I'm pretty sure i'm going to bring my war against FF 7 to my deathbed though

Yeah i just checked out of your Wii thread, very cool stuff. I threw in a bit of Wii's rpg support since somebody thought it might be lacking in terms of RPGs. I certainly don't see that being the problem, possibly with Matsuna making rpgs for the Wii and Sakaguchi for the xbox360, the PS3 will get screwed and FF XIII will sell horribly! Naw..probably wont happen. As long as it's got the name "final fantasy" i don't see anything too bad happening.

That is a bit of a coincidential order, interestingly enough though i don't like either of them THAT much, i'd put VIII before VII simply because i thought it improved on VII in so many ways (even if i didnt like the love sub plot). Here's how i probably would do a full list..remember my bottom ones i kinda are "meh" about so i often might put them in a different order. Notice i put XII in, might switch it around once i'm done but for now i'll keep it there.

    1. FF VI
    2. FF T
    3. FF IV
    4. FF XII
    5. FF IX
    6. FF 1
    7. FF VIIII
    8. FF VII
    9. FF X
    10. FF V
    11. FF II
    12. FF X-2

    Final Fantasy
    Final Fantasy VI
    Final Fantasy Tactics
    Final Fantasy IV
    Final Fantasy V

That, my friends, would be my listing of the top five Final Fantasy games of all time. Next would be VIII, IX, III, and then finally VII. I'm far from being a fan of that game.

And as far as my favorite FFV Job? That one isn't easy to choose, but I'll have to go with...

Sorcerer. Who wouldn't like a Magical Swordsman? Seriously.

    See also classic.

You're right, Sorceror is great, definitely one of my top as well. Combined the best elements of a black mage and a knight for one kickass job class.

Agreed, i'm far from being a VII fan as most people would know due to i'm always bashing on it, but hey if people like it that's their thing. I'm not saying it's bad by any means..just not my kind of final fantasy, and in my opinion doesn't deserve to be in the top of the final fantasy heap.

As much as i love the gameplay of V, i felt the story was unoriginal and not near the level of IV or VI, the graphics were uninspired and more of a downgrade from IV's, and the characters..meh, character development was almost non existant to me. Plus the music just seemed bland in comparision to IV and VI. I guess it's hard being in the middle of two amazing titles.

I still like V..i just agree with square calling it "final fantasy extreme" or saying it was for hardcore players simply because it's job system was amazing, but everything else was kind of standard. That's why i'm hoping III will improve upon those areas and from what i've seen and read it certainly will.

Oh you people and your FF7 hating. You have to look past the irrational fanboys, it's not the game's fault.

For me, it was the first final fantasy that I played in depth and replayed. I had played FFIV before, but I never thrashed it the way I do games now. Before that, my RPG was sega based, so Shining Force was my main thing. Also, I'm probably one of, if not the youngest member in this cult, so my old school nestalgia isn't quite as strong as your selves. har har. Other than that, I thought it had a really good story. It really captured me and made me keep playing. I love ****ed up characters like that. =)

But that's enough of my FFVII defence for today. <3

Funny thing about my FFV gaming style. Galuf always starts out as my monk, but somehow manages to make his way to being a ninja by the end, with someone else, usually Faris as my monk. I can never understand why.

    Until now!

Lol, that's sort of how I've evolved my characters.

Faris is now a Monk, and Galuf is now a knight

Doh, I missed the topic completely.. I believe it in relation to FFV and the Job system? Hmm.. may sound a bit unorthodox but I found that Blue Mage was a standout. Had just about every spell/effect in the game you could use to benefit the party; though White Wind was only really effective if you had a noticably full HP meter but Guardian (I forget its name in the PSOne release) gave the entire party a Protect/Shell/Float effect.. not to mention the old Lv2.3.4.5 Enfeebling spells we have all grown to love.. Old, Flare, Quarter, Doom.

Next job I used *often* was the Bard actually.. you'd be surprised how quick a group of Undead drop with 2 Bards in the group singing Requiem for upwards of 1500~ damage each. Not to mention the Party-wide Regen song, and the temporary level raising Song..

    So many things I could touch on, but, I generally kept one of those 2 in my party for support reasons. And now for the second piece of the article;

Top few preffered FF's you say? Hmm..

    IV, III, VI, XI, VII..

I was actually introduced to the series by VII and an old friend of mine telling me to come over and give it a go.. low and behold, it sucked me in. Lol, after that I delved into the older titles and found myself struck with VI.. then IV.. then IV.. then IV.. then IV.. hell, I could walk through that damn game near blind I know all of its elements that well (I also *do* have my own walkthrough typed up and online, heh). But with III, now this one I'm not sure excatly what happened to be honest but its a damn brilliant game - I even played the original (yet translated) NES ROM and it was probably the first FF to introduce an active job-changing system which was a welcome change. Rawk the M.Knight baby

Hell, I should whip out nesterJ again sometime and start that ROM back up, I think I was in the final dungeon somewhere.. o_O

Better yet, here's some E Penis+1 material for Dawezy and my old M.Knight. XD (check attachment, woo.)

Oh, you're gonna love what they've done to FFIII DS, then.

The M.Knight is gone and, in his place? DARK KNIGHT, BABY.

Yeah, I figured you might be interested in that.

(I failed to earlier mention that Onion Knights are now Freelancers, though supposedly "Onion Knight" is a hidden, unlockable job. I bet it kicks supreme ass.)

Hehe, KH2, I like that one, got a good ways through it before my friend took it back. <3 the storyline in that series myself, just seems really well done. Plus some of the mini-game are a ton of fun even if they do seem a bit "kiddy" to some people. "Kid's game" my ass. XD

Haha you're right you're right. I don't entirely hate the game in any sense, some of my friends somewhat fall into the "fanboy" category in terms of liking FF 7, so i've always gotten a kick out teasing them about the game. It's all for shits and giggles really, i could careless if people loved the game.

Bard was certainly an interesting class..requiem was really the sole reason i would ever use it, but that alone made it very useful. Ninja was good too..i liked everything except "throw" i just never seemed to use that much, but i loved everything else about them.

Still haven't played KH2, i liked one, even though the game is somewhat "kiddie" i agree that it was very welldone. How is 2 in comparison with 1?

Anywayz..trying to get into playing DoD:Source and CS: Source. I played the original cs years ago but i am very very rusty and feel like a n00b all over again..and more so with DoD. I just have to start learning the maps better i guess.

My latest gaming habits, Yesterday, today and likely tonight have been Warcraft III. But not normal melee games, mostly all the cool Tower defence games people have made with the world editor. I would Probably play FFXI or something, but my computer has everything it needs, except for a damn better graphics card and it isn't upgradable because it's a Laptop. Unfortinately I wasn't me who bought it, it was bought for me so I didn't get to choose.

Anyway anyone else here play Warcraft III at all?

Oh wow, he's lived to be 24? I did not see that one coming. I swear that you were 21 when I first met you on SU...no way has it been 3 years. Anyways, have a good one mate. A tiara for you.

Gaming...let's just say I'm really pissed at my computer. I have no idea why, but FFVII ****s up at the very beginning of the first chocobo race. It gives one of those "Windows has encountered an error..blah blah blah...send or don't send?" I've tried reparing it - didn't work; I've tried running it in windows 98 mode - didn't work; I then repaired it 2 more times - didn't work. Based on the fact that the part on the motorcycle went so fast that I could barely keep up, my guess is that the computer is just too fast for the game. Shame. I'll have to start up another one; thank god I have my playstation back.

Do you know of any place where I could like join organised multiplayer games of Warcraft. At the moment I just sit in the custom games screen an hope Tower Maul or something else good comes up. Because I don't like DOTA very much and I can't be bothered learning to play Footmen Frenzy. Or even better I would like to be able to host games, but it's so hard to get that to work.

Isn't that Ironic the guy who calls himself The IT Guy can't get his games to host?
