Poor guy. We picked a terrible time to go awol everyone. This poor guy tries to get involved and we dissapear. Shame on you all! And me...o.o

Anyways! Gaming....ummmm...if only? No, really, I haven't done any in quite a while. It's a shame, I know. I tried to get an emulator of SF2 going, but it bugged up every time special music was played (ie getting party members, saving, etc) so that was useless and I've been apparently too lazy to hook the actual system up. Not only that, but time hasn't permited too much. University is lame for gaming. All I get to do now is play a quick round of Imperial Glory before class starts. =(

However, I DO have a D&D game tomorrow. That's oldskool enough. Too oldskool to even be on a system, hah!

    Until now!

What kind of emulator do you use? I know i played Shining Force 2 on an emulator as well..i think Dgen? I can't think i have two genesis emulators, i hate it when they have stupid bugs like that. I had to play Star Ocean for the SNES COMPLETELY without music because it would always freeze if the music played.

Music aside, it's still one of my fav rpgs.

EDIT: Ah, excuse moi monsieur. (luckily i know french), i'll keep my...bouche shut until further notice

Slow down mon ami; you have to wait to be accepted before you continue on in the discussion. Cesar or Dawezy or whoever else can make that decision, I don't even know anymore, should be around eventually to make the decision. I'm sure you'll do just fine, so until then, reste et sois bon.

And so this isn't total spam, my cp list yet again:

    Until now!

I haven't been playing much of anything either, sadly. I should get back into playing some games. Especially ones I haven't beaten yet, or still have things to unlock.

I read a review of Baten Kaitos: Origins on this month's EGM. Apparently a few things have changed since the other one.

    Instead of a deck for each character, it's just one huge pool for the three party members to share. And... instead of gaining more party members, it's the same three people. Throughout the whole game. o.o;

I still want to play it though.

Eh, don't worry about it, I don't even need to grill the General on his knowledge. He's in as far as I'm concerned. No need to throw random questions at the guy when he's already running around the forums showing off his knowledge of not only old school games, but... just about everything altogether.

Man, it's been a while since I've stopped in, huh?

I've kinda limited myself to FFXI and Suikoden V lately. Haven't played anything pre-1996 in a while, so I've just been lurking as far as the Cult is concerned. I see Psiko finally went public about his divorce dilemma. The whole situation just sucks balls, but... that's life? I mean, at least he's moving on (or at least trying), and that's good.

So... CP, though I kinda already mentioned it:
    - FFXI (PC)
    - Mafia (PC)
    - Suikoden V (PS2)

Ahem...orly? As much as I'll give ya props for your propensity for FFVI...I wanted Dawezy to win that award..I mean..who else on this board has a world renowned OLD SKool FF site? 'nuff said XD
Thank satan I didn't win that award I was somehow nominated for...2 votes and I know who they were all I need XD Couple catergories in there...f*ckin n00b voters
But I digress, most of My Old Skool these days has been SMW the 'All Stars + World' Edition natch. Though with my work and her work and the nannying that i do therein...well heh....not much time for anything really. I try and catch Jin or Zro on..but that's about all ican find these days..oh wells.

Thanx, i guess i wasn't sure how/what lets me get in. I wasn't sure if this one of the clubs where you had to answer questions but i appreciate it. This is really the only club i seem to fit in for sure, sometimes i feel too old discussing things with some of the younger fanboys

As far as old school gaming is considered..i just finished Star Ocean 3 now i'm dusting off FF Antologies to finish FF V. I'm really close to the end, though i have a little leveling up to do before i beat the game.

I would be playing my SNES more but my friend (who is away at college) has my damn power cord!! I have to get that back ASAP, hopefully when he is back on break. I was hoping to replay FF IV and VI sometime soon since i haven't played them since i was little.

How are Suikoden V and FF XI?

Well i know XI is great, all my friends are addicted. I've never gotten into an online RPG just because i feel like it would suck away my life. I'm thinking about getting Phantasy Star Universe when it comes out though.

And i really need to finish playing the suikoden games sometime..i haven't picked one up since i finished Suikoden II. I've been tryin to find III in stores but i'm prob gonna have to buy it online.

But I digress, most of My Old Skool these days has been SMW the 'All Stars + World' Edition natch. Ah..Super Mario World/All Stars. Those are two games that to me NEVER get old. I'm gonna have to pick those up a little when i get that power cord

    CP: Final Fantasy V
    Vagrant Story
Persona (hopefully if i get around to it again sometime)

Hey, I wanted Dawezy to win that award too. Hell, I voted for him. I guess a lot of members just don't realize how oldschool to the core he really is.

But hey, what does it matter? As far as all of US recognize the fact that he's the most oldschool out of all of us, isn't that all that really matters?

@GLC: Normally Dawezy, Dauragon, and I shoot random oldschool questions at members seeking admittance. FFVI knowledge is essential, as is general 2D era FF knowledge, but knowing a few things about other games of the era is important as well. We've hit members with random questions regarding everything from the number of Sonic games on the Genesis to the system upon which Crystalis was made (someone actually got that wrong ).

FFXI is a ton of fun though. There's a reason it consumes my spare time.

As for Suikoden V... in my opinion, it might even be better than Suikoden II. I'm not done with it yet, but it's so damn enjoyable that it's in my top ten RPG list already, creeping up on my top five.

@Scorp: Don't worry, after last night, I fired up the emulators a bit. I don't have the patience at the moment to go sit in my room with my SNES, so I figured at least this way I could take care of business online while playing FFVI at the same time.

Oy Scorp, use a picture of ME next time will ya?

I dunno who the hell that punk is, but he's killing my groove yo

Anyway - at this very moment I cant conjur up any question for our new friend here so he can sit tight and take part in the topics, I got no objections to that ^^. In other news tho I finally landed myself a new fucking computer -> one that can actually play Oblivion and Quake IV! I got Quake IV over 6 monthes ago and have been unable to play it due to my comp being teh crappy XD, Its quite a cool game considering.. diggin the visuals, much like Oblivion. I have to confess though..

..I been experimenting with Cheats, in Oblivion o_o!

Oh, and stripping down the occasional female passer-by because its fun to do. XD Bordem got the better of me last night and I killed a bunch of people passing by and piled them ontop of eachother.. like an orgy. Yep.

    XD

Hehe. Oh boy I'm a sad sob. lol

CP: Oblivion, Q4, FFXI, (Many SEGA ROMs)

EDIT: Eh, maybe I should've saved that in .jpg format.. better quality, but fuck it I'm too lazy atm ^_^
    SPOILER!!:

Feel free to shoot a question when you want to. My favorite final fantasy (and second favorite RPG next to Chrono Trigger) is FF VI so i know a good deal about the game but i will admit i haven't played in so long so i mite be a little rusty I'm a pretty scatterbrained kind of person.

That's awesome you are playing oblivion, i'm kinda in the same deal with you as i recently got a new computer. My friend just got oblivion and i'm probably going to buy it soon (i was thinking about downloading the game but its 4.2 GB size made me think otherwise). I can't believe the game REQUIRES one GB of ram though..luckily i decided to upgrade my computer's ram to a gig.

I know once i get oblivion i'm gonna be sucked into playing it non stop. Would you say it's a big upgrade from Morrowind? (next to the obvious graphic upgrades, etc) I heard they did some things with the combat system as well.

I have to admit i've never been that big of PC gamer but now that i have a good PC i'm looking forward to playing some games i've been wanting to but haven't been able to because of my old pc.

Feel free to shoot a question when you feel the need. I will say i'm a pretty hardcore FF VI fan (second favorite RPG next to Chrono Trigger) so i will probably know most of the questions, though i will admit i'm really scatterbrained and haven't played the game in awhile. I'm definitely an old school 2D ff player to the core though

As for Suikoden V..that's awesome it's better than II for i loved that game. It's definitely been getting better reviews than IV, so i'm definitely gonna have to pick it up sometime. Once i get thru III and IV first though.

And wow that's crazy you bringing up oblivion! I just got a new computer myself, and both my friend and i are buying the game. He already has his copy and he seems to love it. I know once i get it my life is going to be sucked away, it's hard to put games like that down. Would you say it's a big upgrade from Morrowind (aside from the obvious graphic upgrades, etc)? I've heard they have done some new stuff with the combat as well.

I'll be honest, i've never been too much of a PC gamer in comparison with console games but now that i have a brand spanking new pc, i'm gonna have to get some good games.

and for the record..Crystalis is OBVIOUSLY for the NES. Though i got my first exposure to it borrowing my friend's gameboy version of the game. Still haven't been able to find a copy myself, though i guess there is always emulation. Anyone who can't respect the classics like that should be slayed and thrown into the firey pits of hell.

and the sonic games..i want to say there are 5 atleast, but i can't think off the top of my head.

Don't waste your time on Suikoden IV. That's easily the worst from the series. Oddly enough, it's the one that has links to Suikoden Tactics. I haven't played ST, but I'd like to. I hear pretty decent things about it.

The storylines aren't continual; you should know that. There's nothing stopping you from diving right into Suikoden V if you wanted to. III isn't bad, but I and II are better. I'd say skip III and IV, at least for now, and pick up a copy of V next time you run across it.

On a more oldschool note, I'd like some suggestions on what I should play for SNES next. I want to play something I've never played (so of course this would involve emulation -- obviously, you can't provide links to the ROM files, but suggestions are still welcome). Of course, sitting here and listing off all the SNES games I've ever played would take forever... so how about you just shoot some titles at me and see what happens?

Lesser-known RPGs would be ideal. I'm looking for a new old game, but I'm not sure what else is good that I don't already know about.

hmmm.i consider myself a master in the world of snes rpgs. My goal is to literally play everyone and i think i'm close..though there are always more being translated. One i was looking at that will be cool once it's translated is Arabian Nights. Nice looking visuals for sure.

But here are a few of my picks if you haven't already played them (i got some more backup options if you have played some) ..

    Romancing Saga 3
    Treasure Hunter G
    Treasure of the Rudras
    Any of the Lufia games
    Ogre Battle
    Star Ocean
    Robotrek
Actraiser (maybe not quite an rpg..but)
    Translated Dragon Quest games
E.V.O - Search Of Eden (DEFINITELY not a traditional RPG, more platforming/action elements)
    Bahamut Lagoon
SoulBlazer "series" (i.e. SoulBlazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma)

    Seiken Densetsu 3, bitch!

    You know you want to!

And I apologize for my lack of appearances. Along with a social life, I just moved to my grandma's house this weekend and will likely spend most of my free time this week finishing cleaning the old house and getting settled in here.

Overall, life sucks. But hey, there is room for improvement, no?

I could rattle off some other great old skool games, but why bother? I'm clearly not as Old Skool as you are therefore why should you defer to my inferior knowledge of the subject.

Oh yes, I feel I should have won that award. Ass. =P

My god, I really have a problem with sarcasm when I am bitter. I never noticed that until yesterday, and now I see it in action here. On a forum. I'm such a ****ing loser, lol.

Anyways, nothing on the CP from the Old Skool world, however:

    CP: Guitar Hero!!!!!1111!!!1one!!1one1!

I am playing it on Expert Mode now, bitches. Still not great, but rocking nevertheless through the hard shit.
OLD SKOOL - A positive appellation referring to when things weren't flashy but empty of substance, were done by hard work, didn't pander to the lowest common denominator, and required real skill. Labour-saving devices, shortcuts that reduce quality and quitting before the task is done are not characteristics of "old skool."

In reference to computer games, refers to a game that had substantial playability without flashy graphics or eye candy. Old skool gamers appreciate difficult maneuvers, careful planning, and scorched earth policies.

In reference to role-playing games, old skool refers to games that tested players' wits, could kill off careless characters, and required dedication and inner strength to play. Old skool games didn't pander to the ideas that everyone is created equal, that all options are open to all races, that the markets were somehow free, and that a quasi-medieval society could have near 100% literacy.

    See also classic.

Eh, it's not as if the rest of us are exceptionally active or anything. The club gets by on the excess coolness (yes, coolness) that we give off when we do get around to posting.

But now I'm curious, how did I creep by the question portion when I joined? If I had to take those, I guarantee I'd fail. Oh the memory lapses. Suppose I'll shut my mouth before I choke on my words.

I've been absolutely obsessed with Napoleon lately and I've been looking for everything I can to combine him with gaming. So far, all I've found is Imperial Glory (which I'm growing bored of) and Rise Of Nations (which is a struggle to find time for for some reason) so yet again, I've got nothing. That and I have quite a large essay due on Tuesday. >.>

    CP:
The game that involves banging my head for not being farther on my essay

    Until now!

Yeah Seiken Densetsu 3 would by my top, but i figured he might have played it already. To me though, SD3 is like action rpg perfection, it really doesn't get much better. Tales of Phantasia would be up there too, tryin to think of lesser known games but i know all the ones i listed aren't exactly completely obscure releases.

I've got more snes RPG tricks up my sleeve though.

If you are a shining force fan, you should give "Feda: Emblem of Justice" a try

Guitar Hero? That's sweet, i've only played it once when my friend came over with his copy of the game and the guitar..man that was a blast!

The game that involves banging my head for not being farther on my essay
that game at the moment sounds very familar @_@ 4 weeks to the end of school and then 3 good solid months to play Kingdom Hearts2. (Remind me again why i plan to spend another 5 years after this at uni?)

But for the time being, i am so freaking stoked, i found a site that let me download old Atari ST games, Gremlins 2... just awesome, and a hell of alot harder than i remeber. Im looking for Indiana Jones off the ST also, can anyone direct me? the only other update in life is ive found 1 1/2L of vodka for 25 Aussie dollars, so i am a very happy little girl. Also trying to wade through Kingdom Hearts 1.5, and find my old ps1 memory cards so i can finally finish ffv again. I need dedication to one game alone, commitment is a beautiful thing!

    xDDD

    [edit: i killed the conversation didn't i?]

Haha i wouldn't say you killed the conversation or the club!

I wouldn't know about the Atari ST Indiana Jones cause i really haven't played much Atari myself. I used to know a lot of good rom sites but i haven't been into emulation as much anymore but i could maybe look around for ya.

I totally agree with you that commitment is a beautiful thing. When i hear of people playing like 10 games at once i basically think they are trying to sound cool or something. I think the definition of playing differs from person to person though. To me when you say you are "playing" a game i mean ACTIVELY playing. Maybe it's just my short attention span, but i'd rather stick to one game, get it over with and move on to something new. It's like reading 10 books at once, who does that? It just confuses things if you ask me..i would much rather keep my focus on one (or SOMETIMES 2) game(s).

And i can relate to finishing FF V! I just picked the game up a few weeks ago after i stopped playing it years ago, and finally got around to finishing it. I don't know what it was about that game..maybe that i had not played it in so long but it was like a task for me to finish it. I had to constantly force myself not to just move on to a different game..maybe it's becuase i wasn't as in to the story? who knows.

Now..i'm playing Grandia, and I have to say i'm loving every second of it. I'm roughly 15 hours into it rite now and i'm sure i still have a long way to go though.

My problem with playing just one game at a time is that I have played most of the "games" available. I mean come on it seems like most of the games I have played are just a newer version of the games that I beat ten years ago. I jump from game to game looking for something that is unique and fun because after playing a game for a while I usually think, "I have heard this story before," or "I already understand the game play in this game because I played it in another game and now it's too easy." Still when I do find a game that is unique and challenging I usually stick to it until I have beat it. Does anyone else feel this way?

I am hoping that the Nintendo Wii will make it possible to find new games with new game play.

    Anyhow currently playing

    Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime
    Final Fantasy VIII
    Morrowind
    Kingdom Hearts II
    Pac-man

Heh, reading your post, I was just thinking to myself that the Wii would probably be a good tool for revolutionizing (but it's not a good name apparently) gameplay. And then you said it, negating my response. Thanks a lot!

And kudos to you for playing Morrowind, because it's 1000 better than Oblivion, I don't care what anyone says.

For myself. Hm. My usual sad story about not having enough time to do too much still applies. I did recently obtain a mod for AOE3 that sets the stage more for Napoleonic warfar rather than the new world though, which I'm QUITE happy about. Germany is broken down to Prussia, Austria and the smaller states as it should be, and France is so much better.

Yeah i definitely know what you are saying. Do you mean RPGs or games in general though? I'd be curious to know what games you mean exactly. I really do see where you are coming from though, but at the same i think it's hard for a game's story to be ENTIRELY original, i feel like in all the recent final fantasy titles i find bits and pieces from some of the previous titles. Even in FF IX, which is one of my favorite games in the series, i found the story to be very unoriginial and i find great similarities between VI and VII in the story, almost too many similarities. Though i guess i am able to overlook these things and still find something worth playing the game for.

As for the Wii..i am very excited as well. It really is going to revolutionize gameplay. I've been somewhat of a Nintendo fanboy since i was little, though i switced over to Sony simply to play the Final Fantasy titles. I own a NES, SNES, Gameboy, And Nintendo 64. I don't a a gamecube though, got a PS2 instead so i could play the new FF titles. If i had a little more cash i would definitely get one though.

Ah and morrowind IS great. Though i still haven't played Oblivion, my friend seems to like it, he does complain about some of the stuff they have changed from morrowind to oblivion. Why exactly do you think morrowind is better? I was thinking about getting oblivion for the pc, but i am kinda undecided as of now.

CP: Grandia..I SHOULD be playing FF XII, got my copy reserved at bestbuy this morning, they sent me an email telling me it was ready to pickup today but when i got there the employee told me "street release date is tommorrow, sorry i can't give you the game." I was thinking "duh..i knew that, why did you send me the email then."

Oooo FFXII!!! You lucky sod! I have a feeling i wont be able to get my paws on that for a while yet... Australia always seems to be so behind >.o Do you know when the release date for Aus is? Then again, i have dedicated my holidays (the next 3 months) to playing Kingdom Hearts 2! Which i am very excited about. I have been putting it off because of exams and finishing portfolios for school, but maybe, just maybe i will get a job this summer and... nah screw getting a job, that is what government payments for students are for ^_^ And i would have less time to play if i had a job!

Im currently playing Diablo II. Offline however, which makes me pretty sad. I had a killer acct online which expired, and lost all my Tals, torches, enigma... everything! there is little more depressing than hours of gameplay (and possible money) down the drain.

And someone tell me, Dragon Quest VIII... Any good? Ive picked myself up a demo, and it only last for an hour! Which is about enough time to get out of storyline and into some battling. It looks to have an interesting battle system, somewhat like a usual turnbased, but a few more options with things like 'tactics'.

so! CP (when avoiding doing school work): Diablo II (and Pokemon, but dont tell anyone xD =3)

There's still no EU/INT release date yet.

Some people cry November 2006. Others say February 2007. The latter is far more likely, though it's still not official.

I gotta apologize, guys and gals, for not posting here recently.

There has been very little oldschooling for me lately. Mostly just FFXI and Suikoden V... and as of seven hours from now, FFXII will probably be the ONLY thing I play for a little while.

I've got the itch to play FFIII again, but I'll just wait for the DS version to come out rather than loading up the emulator. I'm really looking forward to seeing what kind of changes they made. As long as the game is basically the same and the story is mostly untouched, I'll be happy.

Yeah not too much old school gaming for me either..unless you consider Grandia old school? I guess it is pretty old really..

Even though I hate picking up games then stopping them..i'm with you on FF XII. Once i get it tommorrow..i know that Grandia is going to have to be put to rest for awhile unfortunately. I really do love Grandia though, certainly in my opinion, one of the better 32 bit rpgs i have played, but come on this is FF XII here.

Glad to see a fellow CS fan. I used to play the old school version on my old pc, now that i have upgraded i've been wanting to buy cs:source but haven't gotten around to it.

Im currently playing Diablo II. Offline however, which makes me pretty sad. I had a killer acct online which expired, and lost all my Tals, torches, enigma... everything! there is little more depressing than hours of gameplay (and possible money) down the drain.
Wow Diablo II sure is classic! I was a hardcore online/offline player for awhile, but once i started using trainers to make my guy invincible it stopped being fun, killing people online does get old after awhile when there is no challenge really. That sux about your account though! I kinda was thinking about restarting a game on my new computer, but my disc is so scratched now i can't even install the game. And i wont tell anyone about pokemon , i used to love those games, i was addicted to red and blue but haven't really played any of the new installments.

As for Dragon Quest VIII..i haven't played it so i can't really say anything. I'm a definitely a dragon quest fan, and from what i've heard and seen, Dragon Quest VIII does look very promising. I'm sure I'll play it someday, but i've got enough games on my plate to play as it is.

I never had the guts to play Hardcore Diablo >.< lol, im a wuss when it comes to losing something ive worked hard on (Im one of those people who constantly saves / heals etc in a game xD). That and i have little subtlety when it comes to games like this. I find myself these days just running into a throng of enimies and hacking my way out again. This would not work with hardcore for obvious reasons ^_^

I used to play CS also. This however was back in the day when i had a desktop computer and broadband internet *dreams*. I was never very good at this mind you lol, i used to play against very new noobs and get kills, because that was fun. There was always something so very fun about killing other people online xD (which is a strange thing to say concidering i never liked PvP in diablo)

Im looking forward to the wii also! Im not buying one for myself, but i do get to pick up and play my best mates whilst he is in china xD My insides are batteling because i want him to be able to open and play it first (because thats the nice thing to do) But then i really do need to play it myself. Maybe I'll flip a coin to decide. =3

Have a lovely day everyone =3

I just started up FFXII. It's pretty interesting and fun to play. I like the battle system and the leveling system, too.

I'm also going to be playing Suikoden 1 in a bit, too. >.>

Yeah I started FFXII also it seems to be pretty great. I am very excited that the cut scenes are kept to a minimum it seemed like FFX was more movie than game while this one is a good mixture of both. I'm pretty excited that it finally came out. I alos really like that it has tried to create a new type of game by changing the leveling up and fighting norms. It seems real nice.

    Currently playing
    FFXII

Yeah i was never that good at CS either. I guess i'm not much of a first person shooter guy..or atleast i'm good at the more arcade style shooters like Unreal, Quake, even Halo. My friends and i used to have Halo LAN parties all the time. I loved playing that game. I've never been that good at CS though, people that play online are so hardcore and I didnt nearly play that much at all. Plus my old pc sucked, so it was hard even getting better when your videocard maked all the colors off so you couldn't see. I'd rather stick to RPGs anywayz.

So finally i'm playing final fantasy XII and i have to agree with you guys this game is GREAAAAAAAT. I am still in shock and awe, this is the way next gen ff title should be. Whoever said the battle system would kill the game is wrong, i love the battle system. Battles no long feel like a chore, it's actually fun to go level up.

Didn't get to play as much as i want yesterday though because i also picked up CS:Source and spent some time installing it, downloading DoD, etc. My friend has the game so he wanted me to get it to play it with him. I spent close to two hours trying to set things up, but either there is something wrong with my computer, or with the game, i'm having a lot of technical difficulties. I'm gonna have to do some troubleshooting later. I'd rather play FF XII anywayz though.

Anywayz, happy posting everyone and good luck to all the fellow FF XII players out there. I'm gonna go get going on it.

Several reasons. First off, Morrowind's landscapes have far more diversity. You could never tell what part of Cyrodil (the country that oblivion takes place in) you were in just by looking at the scenery; Morrowind on the other hand has a very diverse landscape, albeit half of it being ugly ash. Second, there are way fewer guilds to join in Oblivion. There's only 5 maybe, and they're all pretty standard. Thirdly, they cut a lot of weapons in Oblivion: spears are non existant and the armour system is set up that the armour you find gets progressively better so you're almost forced to use the "best" armour despite how ugly you may find it. Morrowind was good so that most armours were fairly equal in defence, with the exception of the odd uber rare item. It left you free to choose what appealed to you without having to worry that your armour is completely useless. As a more superficial reason, 2K games published it and anyone that knows me knows that I despise that company more than I would despise my murderer. They ruined Firaxis and are on a good way to ruining Bethesda as well.

That isn't to say the game isn't good; it is and definately worth buying. The graphics are amazing and the NPCs are wonderfully alive. I just liked Morrowind better.

    I'd post more if I was doing more old-schooling. <.<;;

As of right now, I'm kinda...well, yeah, playing way more FFXI than anything else, with some Counter-Strike:Source on the side. Plus anything else that catches my attention now. Like Toca Race Driver 3. Finally got my comp and vidcard upgraded (as anyone who talks to me most of the time knows, most likely ^^;; ) so now I can actually play everything I want at a decent framerate. Yay! ^^
