Hello Tiffany and Wyatt, good to see some new people that will hopefully be active, I joined the club not long ago and I'm going to be active forever, or until I get sick of it.

That news about FFT coming out on the PSP only makes me sad because I know I won't be able to afford one for a long time and when I finally do I'm going to have a lot of games to catch up on.

I got Children of Mana and I've been quite disapointed, it is hardly an RPG at all it's just some hack n slasher where instead of exploration there is just dungeon after dungeon after dungeon and the only town in the game is the one you start off in. I'm actually going to consider taking it back, but I'm going to play it a little longer to see if it gets any better since I still have 5 days before my time limit for a full refund is availible at the game store.

In other kindof embarrising new I've actually been getting back into the pokemon games, I thought I'd outgrown it but that games are still a lot of fun. Anyway I was wondering if anyone know where I can get a rom of Pokemon Emerald that actually allow you to save so that you can continue the game after beating the Elite Four. It keeps saying the save file is corrupted in the two i've tried. Or maybe I need to change some of the options in the emulator, but my current attempts have had no success. I have my own copy of the game of course, I just like playing it at x3 speed on the emulator.

So that's what been happening lately anyone else played CoM and been disapointed?

Kyle: “Kenny just died 8 hours ago from that monster, how could he have died back then too” Cartman: “Oh yeah I guess that doesn’t make sense” from City on the edge of Forever. Cartman: "Attention shoppers! Outside today, we have a cripple fight. Cripple fight, outside!" from Cripple Fight. Goth Kid: "To be a non-conformist, you have to dress in black, and listen to the same music we do" from Raisins. Priest: "Maybe if more of us attended church on sundays the lord wouldn't have felt it necessary to punish us by takething this little boy" Mr. Garrison: "Oh here comes the guilt trip again" from Spontaneous Combustion.     Tiffany and Wyatt are actually fairly long-time members of the Cult (I think...ouch, nevermind, no more thinking, it hurts >_< ). As to the FFT update...what exactly is this about it? I've heard about the PSP receiving "official" emulation of PS1 titles or some crap, but that's about it. o.O;

Thanx for the NES! Old school gamers unite for sure! I think that's gonna be two NES consoles for me after MaxPower gives me one for winning the nintendo worshippers sig contest!

It's funny because I was going to do the same thing with gifts..except i couldn't. Maybe Loco would know, but I submitted gifts going on three weeks ago, and I've seen gifts submitted after mine go up (the chocobo, brandmark, nes), but three weeks later still no magicite, ballon animals, or computers. I was going to give magicite to the cult! My only request is that they were up by christmas.

Anywayz, I'm gonna be M.I.A. for a short awhile but i hope to hear good things coming from here when i return..i.e. more crowns and HOPEFULLY my gifts will be up by then.

First off I would like to appologize for being a posting slacker. I have started my thesis and it takes up all of my time. If I would have been smart I would have done a content analysis of on-line forums and then I could be here all day but my love for all things old-school won out and I am writing about the 8-bit and Atari consoles.

Anyhow did anyone get/buy a new system for christmas? I know that this is an old school club and this question has an old school twist.

I got a Wii for myself for christmas and have been trying to download new games for it. I got a Wi-Fi connector and still can't get the sucker to work. I am just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on games to download once I get it to work? Has anyone played Gunstar Hero or Bonk and if so are they worth buying? Or should I stick to the classic Nintendo games like Mario/Zelda?

I've been gone for a while myself, but that's because of family, not a thesis.

Lately though, I've been trying to gather partrs for my latest project : NESpc check out the tutorial for it at www.hellalame.com/nes/

I have the power supply and the motherboard and I think I have some RAM, all I need now is the NES

Luckily, the Motherboard I have has video on it already, so I won't have to fool around trying to get a video card that small.

Anywho, outside of that, lately I've been playing Lego Star Wars 2.

    Funniest game series ever.

    Bump!

Where's everybody gone , this is meant to be the greatest club on TFF.

Well I'll see what I can to to help get it moving again.

Nothing could fit the old skool theme more then these 2 documentaries and I'm sure anyone here will be interested in these.

BBC: Tetris: From Russia with Love - learn about both Russian modern history and one of the most fought over games in history Tetris. Atari, Nintendo and a variety of third party developers, fight for the the right to one of the greatest selling games in history but have to rescue the game from the clutches of a Communist society.

History of Video games - Despite the title this is actually only about the Atari, Nes and gameboy era, perfect for old skool discussion.

My own gaming has currently involved Civilization III, that is a game I always keep going back to a few months after I get sick of it each time.

So that's about it for my update, enjoy the docos.

Greetings cult, It is I, GLC in the disguise of Dyluck!

Well in old school news, i gave myself a temporary identity change as Dyluck from Secret of Mana! I apologize if you are using IE, and your eyes are bleeding from the crappy white shadows on my username, i tried to make it match with the font from my banner. Now i'm out of money and have no way of making my username/title look better though, oh well. I'm just viewing it in Firefox, so no problems

Haven't done much old school gaming lately. I had a 7 hr Day of Defeat: Source binge today and i feel like i have carpel tunnel. I also am playing Okami, one of the most impressive titles i have played in a VERY long time. If anyone hasn't gotten a chance to play it and owns a PS2, i advise you to. It's like a more original version of Zelda with the most impressive visuals on the PS2 i have ever seen.

@Setzer, cool old school info, i'm gonna have to look that over for sure.

Alright, looks as though my name was taken off the member list a long time ago (presumably due to my general inactivity), so i'd like to reapply, if that's OK with you folks, as i'm beginning to back into playing older games once again. (Since the last time that I posted in this thread, which was a good 20 pages or so back, i've only been playing gratuitous amounts of Starcraft, Ragnarok Online, Metal Slug 1-5, Rome: Total War, and CounterStrike.) So yeah, would it be okay if I rejoined?

Scorp, your "on AIM" status leaves much to be desired. You're logged on, but never actually on when I actually log on myself.

Anywho, gaming. I haven't done a lot of actual gaming lately. FFXII fairly frequently, but I haven't gotten into it as much as other Final Fantasies; not sure why. I decided to give my computer a near wipe and repaired windows, so I can once again install things on it, hurray. I still have a presisting problem with odd lines and dashes just appearing randomly on the screen though; I thought it was a problem with windows, but if the repair didn't fix it, I have no clue what it is. Anyways, I've actually, believe it or not, been amusing myself with the games over on the Homestar runner site. Have you ever sat down and played some of those things? They're great. They have those Dungeonman games and Peasant's Quest, which are made up like some really old school adventure games. You know, like the ones where you type: "Get potion" or "talk ugly man" to do things. Oh, and they're halarious of course.

    All hail Trogdar!

Yeah dude, that is perfectly fine with me. I'd just taken you off because the list was full of people who didn't ever come to the forums any more, and I was cleaning it up a little bit. By all means, now that you're back, feel free to resume posting.

Loco, I was browsing through Oceaneyes28's wonderful Post Your Picture index (Everybody go give rep for that. Right now.)

I found your pictures. You look nothing like I had expected you to.
The only times I've encountered you describing yourself is in mention of a cane, leg pain, and senility.
I had expected you to be slightly older.

Anyways, uh...I forgot what I was gonna talk about.

I propose a tribute to our Crimson comrade, psiko.

You all know myself (and ZRO) are quite the FFXI addicts are seldom play it ~ I've been focusing towards my Red Mage for the last few weeks as opposed to my all out slaughter-fest on Dark Knight. My Dark Knight has been 75 (maximum level, like 99 in most titles) for quite a damn long time so now I bring to the table my 2nd mastered job.

Dawezy ~ Reddicus Magus, the second*.
*psiko is the almighty Crimson Lord of D00M and he forever shall be, lol.

    Clickie!

Also in that picture is a young lass by the name of Troopa, she lives about an hour north from my area ~ I wanna go say gday to her sometime but meh, lazy.

I cannot bring much towards the table of discussion atm, but for the record Setzer.. this is how we roll, everyday activity is nice but we do have the occasional week-long hiatus because we cant really be assed to post anything.
    SPOILER!!:

    ^_^

Yeah, i have no problem with hiatuses, i think my n00b rush is kinda over and now i'm just pretty lazy when it comes to posting.

Also, due to the holiday drama at my household (aka the neverending battle between me and the rest of my family, which could result soon in me getting kicked out of the house), i haven't been around the computer as much. Plus, i got Okami . I'm sure I'll be more active once this holiday season is over, got about another week but then I'm starting my new job.

Anywayz, in light of my recent Secret of Mana makeover, I've pondered the question: What game is better Secret of Mana or Seiken Densetsu 3?

Seiken Densetsu 3 seems to be the obvious choice considering it's basically Secret of Mana on steroids. Improved gameplay with a freakin awesome class system, multiple characters each with their own story, overhauled graphics, better dialogue (secret of mana's was way compressed) it's got it all! Then I take in the fact that Secret of Mana was one of the first rpgs I played, and even though it does seem to lack in comparison with SD3, it's got a bit of a "smalltown" charm with it's characters and story. I think if i had played SD3 on a tv with a real snes controller (instead of a keyboard because my gamepad was out of commission at the time) my vote may be different, but Secret of Mana FTW!!

@Maxpower, didn't notice you question about gunstar heroes and bonk. I've played Bonk's Adventure, I have the game on my gameboy (and i've played the original), and I'd say it's definitely a classic platformer and worthy of your collection, especially at such a cheap price. I haven't played gunstar heroes though.

@ Dawezy: You sexy pimp. Now you can be considered a worthy end game player, because you've got a decent job up there. =P

@ Dyluck: SD3 FTW all the way, man. Nostalgia has its place, but seriously. SD3 is to Secret of Mana like FFVI is to FFV. No comparison whatsoever, even though they are all good games. It takes one hell of a game to shake up my Top 5, and that game did just that. Seriously, it moved games that had been solidly in place for over a decade. What can top that?
OLD SKOOL - A positive appellation referring to when things weren't flashy but empty of substance, were done by hard work, didn't pander to the lowest common denominator, and required real skill. Labour-saving devices, shortcuts that reduce quality and quitting before the task is done are not characteristics of "old skool."

In reference to computer games, refers to a game that had substantial playability without flashy graphics or eye candy. Old skool gamers appreciate difficult maneuvers, careful planning, and scorched earth policies.

In reference to role-playing games, old skool refers to games that tested players' wits, could kill off careless characters, and required dedication and inner strength to play. Old skool games didn't pander to the ideas that everyone is created equal, that all options are open to all races, that the markets were somehow free, and that a quasi-medieval society could have near 100% literacy.

    See also classic.

...oh wait, you were being rhetorical? My apologies.

In other news, I ripped my hand open, and it hasn't stopped me from continuing to play Soul Calibur III. Now THAT'S what I call dedication.

Yeah, that's a good point. I guess It'd be better for me to use the term "favorite" game rather than "best", because even though I may have enjoyed SoM more, it's easy to tell that SD3 is a better game on just about every level. Though i do enjoy SoM's opening theme more than SD3's..er i can't think of it's opening theme , but that's a very small point, and overall both have great soundtracks. SD3 floored me the first time I played it, and it definitely shook my list up as well.

Just think what that original team could have done with a SD 4 if they upgraded THAT much between Secret of Mana and SD3. Hey, you never know though, Dawn of Mana might be..ok..but any hopes for it improving upon SD 3? No hope there, sorry.

An interesting rumor that was stated in the "rumors" thread that Cain recently created was that Square might be selling some of their old franchises including Seiken Densetsu. I wouldn't mind seeing it land in the hands of Brownie Brown, seeing as they worked on the original games. There could still be hope for a worthy successor to the throne of the action rpg of the gods, Seiken Densetsu!

All this Mana talk makes me want to replay the games. Especially SD3, seeing as there are a few characters I have yet to play with. Definitely gonna have to buy a new gamepad if I do though. And Secret of Mana has been AWHILE, but a friend is borrowing my power cord for my SNES so no luck there unless i went the emu route.

EDIT: , likin the okami comment loco. That sux about your hand though! You don't seem to have the best of luck when it comes to injuring yourself. You really are a trooper though, and that deserves some props, talk about hardcore gaming! You should just wear some kind of protective suit (and mask) at all times to protect yourself

Firstly, to answer Dyluck's question: Tough choice, that. Back when I first finished SD3, it was my clear favorite over its predecessor (which I had played a good two years before), but today? I don't know if it's just sheer nostalgia, but I enjoy SoM more than its sequel. Irrational, I know. SD3 is better in pretty much every way, so i'll just have to pick that. SoM will always hold more of a special place in my heart, however.

Secondly, a very exciting thing happened for me today: I actually managed to find the ROMs for the original copies of Super Mario Bros. 1-3 on the NES. And by "original", I mean just that: no "super challenge" versions, no "upgraded" versions, no Super Sperm Bros, no Super Zelda Bros. 3, nothing but the good ol' original experience. I don't know if i'm just looking in the wrong places, but every good ROM site I know of won't offer the original three games due to some special copyright enforcement bullshit; they only have a million crappy hacked versions. I've been searching for the original versions for ages now. So yeah, proud moment for me today. I know, I know, I need to figure out how to make better use of my time. Until that proud moment comes, i'll curl up and play Super Mario Bros.

Oh, and jeez, LC, that sounds like it hurts. (Note to self: Duh.) But look, I think that there are certain times that one needs to just put down the videogames for a moment, and I think this qualifies. In all seriousness, here's hoping that it heals up quick, eh?

I would have to vote for SD3, because as you all stated it is better in everyway. I can understand likeing SOM because of it's original charm, but that's all it is really charm. SD3, was great fun to play and the magic and combat system was very interesting. I wonder why it was never released in english. Oh well.

I've been gaming less lately and spending more time on the internet watching a varieties of TV shows and stuff online for free. Been kinda drifting away from here because it's seemed really inactive or maybe my NOOB rush is over just like Dyluck.

@Dyluck, omg, only 10 more posts to the big grand dude, congrats. Me It still feels so distant especially with how inactive I've been lately.

Yeah one other thing that I think SD3 had going on is it's difficulty. Atleast I felt some of the boss battles in that game were a bit harder than the ones in Secret of Mana. Though I do have to say that both featured some great boss battles, and that to me is always a big deal in rpgs!

Going on with SD3, what are everyone's favorite character(s)? And character combinations? And what classes did you choose?

The very first time I played the game I remember I went with Hawk, Angela, and Kevin. After my file got erased pretty early on into the game I restarted with Duran, Lise, and Kevin (Lise as my main character). This seemed to be my ideal setup. I have yet to play with Carlie at all.

I'd say overall Lise is probably my favorite character, I enjoyed her story of being this amazon princess trying to save her kingdom and her younger brother. Plus i found her to be a very useful and versatile character. Duran, the beastly swordsman was great as well, and after Lise became more of the support character, i found myself controlling him more often.

Classes wise, in final classes, Kevin was a God Hand, Duran a Duelist, and Lise a Fenrir Knight. I really want to replay the game possibly with different characters, but also trying more of the final classes (though I did once used cheats at the end to switch classes at will. It was hard for me choosing between the Vanadis and the Fenrir Knight for Lise, and i had a lot of fun using Death Hand for Kevin)

I'd still love to see an official translation, c'mon i'd rather see SD3 on the DS or VC on the Wii then have any of of these new games! Just think if you could have ONLINE sd3, oh man I don't even want to think about it. *drools* Square, stop messing around with this Children of Mana and Heroes of Mana crap and give us an official SD 3! Wow, actually doing some research i found out there that there are a lot of rumors and speculation (with some evidence) that SD3 might be released on the DS with Heroes of Mana. In some magazine articles in JeuxFrance, SD3 screenshots were included in the magazine. And the thing is, they weren't in SNES style resolution, they were in the wider DS format! *begins to soil pants*

@Setzer, thanks man, I can't believe I'm so close to getting there. I wasn't really paying attention to until last nite when i noticed I had 989! I'll probably hit it within the next few days. I'm sure we all will go thru active/inactive times though.

Either that or you're like me where you're really just not that active at all, because you keep your head WAY too far in one game. <.<; I've still yet to even bother to try and play that Seiken Densetsu series, so I've no clue about any of it. XD I loved Secret of Mana tho, and found the other Mana games I played to be enjoyable (Legend of Mana on PSX I think, and I can't remember the name of the one that was on GBA x.x; ). To be honest, I think I need to get my head out of FFXI, but hell, trying to get everything I can done on there takes so ****in long all the time. Not to mention there's that whole "I'm paying for it, so I'm going to get as much playtime as possible out of it" mentality that it inspires. XD

    CP:
    FFXI, duh.

Well you've played a bit of the series if you have played Secret of Mana and Legend of Mana. If you enjoyed Secret of Mana, you'd love SD3, it's a godlike game no doubt. I have to say though, even though it does have multiple storylines, I almost prefer Secret of Mana's storyline over it. The mana series as a whole has a great storyline, but Secret of Mana has to be my favorite storyline. I've only played Secret of Mana, SD3, Legend of Mana, and Sword of Mana (though only finished the first 3). I haven't played many of the newer games like Children of Mana though.

Heh, i definitely see your thoughts on FF XI. That's kinda the reason I don't play online rpgs, because I definitely would get sucked in not only because of the addictive nature, but also to get my money's worth. SOMEDAY I will play that game, and play until i have no soul or a life. I wonder if they are going to make a sequel to it anytime soon?

Anywayz, I've been trying to post a lot in the "ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer" thread, but found that posting in there doesnt even increase my post count!? Heh, just trying to get to 1,000. ALMOST THERE..(1 more)..edit: nevermind i got it!

In terms of old school gaming, does anyone miss the difficulty and intense-ness (yeah that's definitely not a word) of the oldschool 2D shooters, a la Gradius, R-Type, etc?

I was just thinking of all the great times I had playing those games when i was young, and how damn hard they were. One of my favorites was UN Squadron, a game developed (i think), my capcom's US development studio and released for the SNES. The games are definitely a dying breed though, but i'm glad games like Ikaruga still exist (long live Treasure, one of the greatest developers ever!). I was thinking of these because of the Wii's VC, and how many GREAT oldschool games like those shooters are being released for it! AND Super Castlevania IV..*drools*

@Dyluck, HAPPY 1000th post, YAY!! (Confetti) (Fanfare)
Shame you didn't keep the GLC identidy until you passed the line, I remember you better as the guy who kept changing his name between varieties of GeneralLeoChristophe. I'm planning to overhaul my identidy the moment I reach 1000 posts, not my username, that'll never change except for the Caps you may have noticed. But I'm going to change to something completely different from my stan theme at the big 1 grand. But, (sniff) still nearly 200 to go, such big plans, so very distant.

Anyway, the greatest Oldskool 2D shooter I have play is by a long shot 'Tyrian'. Notice how much I emphasise it. That's because that's what this game deserves it was so ahead of it's time in awesomeness. It was kind of like the 1942 etc. games on an overdose of steriods. It had crazy insane weapons like the Orange juicer and banana blast. mind you only are few weapons were foodstuff, but they were the ones that made you lol in delight. Anyway there are over 80 of these awesomely creative weapons that each have 11 levels of upgradability, from just shooting one weak little banana to shooting 15 bananas at once in every direction posible. Honestly the creativity and fun factor of the weapons themselves make this game perfect but them I could continue to talk about how awesome everything else in the game is froms it's story mode to it's 2 player mode and the different ship types. Anyway it's decided I'm going to write a review about this soon and do better justice then ranting about it here will.

In my current gaming news nearly up to Sky Temple, but I can't figure out what to do after getting that chick's memory back, please help.

Also I recently got an issue of Retro Gamer magazine. Which was a great read and I'm going to keep collecting it now and maybe even back order.

Appreciate the congrats Setzer! It's hard for to me to believe that I only joined this october and I already have over 1,000 posts. Kinda crazy for sure. Yeah, It is kind of a shame, I went through three different versions of General Leo while here. I'm just mad that the best name, "General Leo" is taken. I plan on going through many identity changes as dead heroes from my favorite old school games. Chrono Trigger is next on my list, I think you guys could take a good guess on who I'm being. I mite do SD3 and Earthbound in the future too. Regardless, I will always be General Leo at heart. Speaking of Chrono Trigger, looks like my Chrono based club was doomed before it even began! It could be too early to call it's fate, but maybe it will sometime see a little action sometime. Due to the overwhelming posts in regards to Chrono related threads, I figured we had some Chrono fans here. Oh well though.

I'll definitely have to look into that game Setzer, what console was it for? The weapons in that game sound absolutely ridiculous, fruit guns??. The two player modes in those games are definitely the best though. I'll look foward to learning more in your review though. I'd love to get a subscription to a retro gaming magazine, I didn't really know any existed though. *LONG LIVE THE OLD SCHOOL BITCHES!* Has anyone played Square's very own old school style shooter, Einhander for the PS 1?

In non-old school news, Rogue Galaxy is out very soon and I'm pumped about that! Funny thing is, I'm not even done with Okami. I've been playing it in such small amounts lately for some reason, a lot of the time not at all. Just kinda been busier, and more often than not, I'm playing Day of Defeat: Source instead. I know it's a pretty short game though, and I'm probably around 50%-75% done with it already. Gotta get it done before I go head first into Rogue Galaxy.

I loved the Sims 1 and used to have every expansion pack and played it so much I tired every career twice over. However because I had played Sims 1 so much when I went and bought Sims 2 I found that it was too much of the same and since I had gotten sick of Sims 1, Sims 2 didn't keep me interested for much longer even with all it's expansion packs. Seasons looks like it may be a fun expansion though. Pets I havn't gotten yet and I'm not sure if I want to Pets dosn't sound like a particulary interesting addition to the game. Seasons however has new careers and that's probably one of my favourite things in the game. I would probably enjoy other things like going into town, but the load time are so long I avoid going into town like the plague. University is probably my favourite expansion so far because it was such a refreshing change from the normal type of game.

Okami sounds really cool, but I don't think it's going to be released here for a while as the game isn't even in the coming soon section of the game store. The magazine I got is called Retro Gamer and it's great I've played a few more old-skool game that I never would have known about otherwise. Like a VGA remake of King's Quest 3, when I found out about that I hunted it down and played it.

That's all I can think of to update about my oldskooling I'm looking forward to getting some Wiipoints soon so I can buy some classic games.

Yeah, they have a lot of classic games already on the Wii, definitely a lot more to come too.

Yeah Okami is pretty cool, sometimes a little bit lacking in the action and difficulty department, but one hell of a great game for sure. Two big thumbs up from Dyluck. It's not exactly a game for everyone though, I can some people being turned off by it's very japanese influence, charm, humor and it's graphics. Probably will make my top 10 list..probably. It's hard for me to rate my all time favorite game though.

Is there really a VGA remake of King's Quest 3? I grew up playing Sierra's King's Quest/Quest For Glory Series. The only King's Quests I have played are V and VI though, I'd love to check out newer versions of the original though. Some of those old point and click adventure games used to be TOUGH. I remember in King's Quest V I saved at the wrong time at the end of the game and whenever I would load I'd die, basically I screwed myself over COMPLETELY. The newer King's Quest/Quest for Glory games definitely aren't the same as the old ones.

I too liked the Sims, I went a little custom skin/house crazy though. Created a house with Cloud, Squall, Cyan, and Sabin in it. Then had a house of naked lesbians. Then I had the white house which was home to Jesus and a Nun, and uh oh! , they had a baby! Jesus didn't want the world to know though, so I locked him in a room then deleted the door. Haha good times with the Sims, definitely got played out for me though, and that's why I never got into the Sims 2. Just kinda got old to me especially when I used the money cheats.

In oldschool gaming news, I hope to be checking out Tyrian soon enough and once I am done with the few of the games I got going on, I'm thinking of replaying some old snes rpgs, possibly Ogre Battle and Seiken Densetsu 3.

*LONG LIVE THE OLDSCHOOL, SLAY THE N00BS!!*

I didn't like Ogre Battle much, what I never got about it was how little interactivity you would have in the game, you would get into a battle just to watch a CPU do the battle for you. I found that boring and didn't get very far in either Ogre Battle or the N64 one.

I've been trying to get Guantlet Legends fo work on my n64 emulator and it seems imposible even with 5 different plug-ins. One worked but only at 10 fps most other wouldn't even let me run the game. I don't understand why Majora's Mask and Conker's Bad Fur Day and even Perfect Dark work with no or little problems, with the defauly Plug-in but Gauntlet Legends won't work no matter what I try. Help appreciated.

Since I couldn't Get Gauntlet working I decided to try Phantasy Star IV for Genesis instead, because it appeared by many sources to be the best RPG on the Sega. Gonna play it when I get home from work, which is why I'm procrastinating with this message right now, better get back to it.

Heh, I'll talk about some funny Sims experiences I had next time when I have more time.
