I've heard both ways. I assume it would be better to let the ear heal after the initial piercing, but I've heard if you take it out just clean it like normal and it will heal just fine.

They might not be cleaning them properly or at all. Just taking them out and letting water run through the ear lobe in the shower isn't enough.
The material in the ear also affects it quite a bit.
Stainless steel and acrylic are known to be the bad ones
Bone and stone don't usually protrude the smell as bad as the others do, if at all.
