    Encounter's With the Unknown

Well this thread is for all of you who has had a encounter with the dreaded emo kid. I have had several encounters and none of them have been good.

I am currently going to Spencerian College in Louisville. There are several spots on campus for students to blow off time in between classes. On the way to the library there is a little nook. We call this nook the "emo corner". It is called this because of what is written on the walls. Several things including "Love is a Lie". Emo shit like that.

We hang out in this corner often, and well one day we had a bit of a scare. Some gothic/emo chick walked up to us. She called all of us jocks, said she hated jocks then she pulled out a knife, and said she was gonna kill all of us for taking her spot.

A good emo moment can happen anywhere care to share some of yours.

Sitting here waiting for Rocky, and Che to notice me!!

Honestly, emo/scene is nothing more than a style, I can't say for goth since I don't even know what the requirements are. But anyway my point is, If she is threatening you with a shank then she wasn't an "emo goth" kid she was just crazy, or having a really bad day.

If you're asking for crazy encounters? Take the city bus, you will be amazed at what you'd find.

The one I can remember most was at the bumf*cked station/THE WORST place in the world. This big African American guy walked out loooking like this:
    -he was wearing red suspenders
-Alligator red skinned shoes that curled up at the tip (kind of like what jester's shoes would look like)
-he had a f*cking flavor flav clock
    -red hat
-and his hair was curled out on each side like Oompa loompa hair.

    I don't even......

I was seriously waiting for him to make it rain Kool-aid

Josh...not withstanding that we're both Kentuckian...I'd watch your mouth.
Emos and goths are not interchangeable. As a matter of fact there couldn't be a greater irony than confusing the two. Know your subcultures.

As for emos. They're emos, not really worth discussing unless you are one, dating one or having to put up with one for protracted periods of time. They're people like everyone else...but the fact that they're connectected with the emo subculture is prolly not their most impressive feature, least not from my standpoint.

I went to a gamestop about a month ago, there where like 3 goth/emo (whatever you prefer to call them) dudes standing in the ps2 section. They were really goth looking. I was in there about 5 mins when a man and his wife came in. The guy was picking up a game off pre-order i think, probably halo reach. So anyways when he was about to leave, he looked at one of them and muttered "nice eye-liner" then he left. By that time I was up with the store clerk, and we kinda looked at eachother grinning. Afterwards the goth dudes were talking about how they would have beat him up and stuff like that. I thought the whole thing was funny as hell.

    Ughh, not this topic again.

I was about to point out that goth != emo in any way, shape or form, but others have said plenty about it already.

I'm going to derail this topic a bit because something related annoys me. My biggest beef with the internet these days is both the overuse and the misuse of the term "emo". People use this term for everything these days. Anytime someone expresses an emotion other than utter indifference or a male character looks any more effeminate than a bald space marine, said person is going to be labeled emo by someone.

An excellent example is the recent controversy involving the Devil May Cry reboot.

What about this character is emo? He has black hair? He's slim? His hair doesn't even reach his eyes for Christ's sake. At best, his look is some variation of a traditional punk look and yet forums and comment boxes round the net were throwing out the "e" word as if it were a greeting.

I have more to type about this, but I'm tired, so I'll let it marinate.

    edit:

    Re: Encounter's With the Unknown

I feel so retarded posting in this now.

^ this whole thing slightly annoys me, only because I used to have a lot of "scene" friends in High school; because if a male has long hair and skinny jeans he's automatically a scene kid.

    The Breakdown:
People don't know the difference between emo and scene so they say all emo people want to kill themselves and suffer from depression while scene kids just dress the part. Goth is thrown in the mix because people don't know anything about it besides saying every single goth person only wears black. Black = depression and heavy music.

Basically if you have any kind of a side bang or a part in your hair that's not directly in the middle, people will categorize you as emo, it's that simple; everything else like eyeliner, skinny jeans and the music you listen to just adds to it.

I used to get called emo all the time because I like skinny jeans? and I have bangs?...lol

    EDIT:

    Re: Encounter's With the Unknown

I think scene and emo are a load of shit. I find it hilarious how scene kids think they're all the range and so popular and so cool, where I think you're a huge dickhead if you go out in public wearing a pair of large glasses with no lenses, brightly coloured/plaid shirts, skinny jeans and busted up shoes. And what the **** is up with the back-brushed and ugly looking hair? Some things should have stayed back in the time they came from.

As for emo? Emo isn't like goth in the slightest. Emos hate themselves, society, the system and "everything sucks and that's why I want to join the black parade", etc. It seems to have originated from Japan. Goths laugh at emos and how pathetic they are, then eat them for breakfast. As far as I know, goths have existed for over twice as long as emos.

As for having problems with the two? I can't say I have had problems with either. If you've had a problem with an emo, then you're just as pathetic. You were hanging out in the "emo corner", right? Sounds like you were trying to provoke something. Sure, they don't have the right to take a part of the school for themselves, but everyone had their hangout spots.

I've only had problems with chavs. They're less intelligent lifeforms who think they're just so awesome because they were pregnant before they were sixteen, have a council flat, and are on their third sexual relationship. They also smoke lots and enjoy getting "laggin'" too often while their kids are following in their footsteps.

The thing with chavs is that it's a continuous loop that will never stop... emo is just a trend which lasts until a person gets to their twenties.

    Re: Encounter's With the Unknown

I have part of my hair past my eyes and wear mostly Volcom/Kiaeneto. Guess I'm gonna be judged hard by people in society now.

EDIT: Because you guys are all dumb (fo real), I will repeat what Jin tried to say, which is Goth =/= Emo =/= Scene.

"Scene" kids go for shock value yes, but aren't /wrists or anything of that type. (usually unless they're a ruhtard and don't know what they are, which if they're under 17 its quite a possibility this could be true) These scenesters appreciate music and know their shit to a certain degree and are loyal to a few specific genres which mostly happen to be indie, hardcore stuff of which they dress to exemplify. I'd say it would be hard to pin down a certain style of dress for a "scene" person which could cause a general confusion for all those misinformed. For example, I've often been labeled a scene type because of my hair/clothing choices along with my taste in music, but I scoff at this because I simply am not at all, I just have tastes that cater to their group I guess lol. Anywho, it's hard to label a scene person, but they're mostly all chill (minus a few immature/dumb kids but what group doesn't have those people rite?) so don't hate on em without knowing what you are disliking, kthx.

(It would be hard to label what "scene" people listen to because they're musical taste is varied compared to the other two groups.)

Emo: I like what an Emo kid is summed up as in urbandictionary. "Like a Goth, only much less dark and much more Harry Potter." Not 100% accurate but enough to get a general discription. What would be on an ipod of an Emo kid? Mostly darker alternative stuff like Dashboard Confessional, MCR, Bullet For My Valentine, Taking Back Sunday, stuff that expresses self-loathing and is something to listen to while being depressed to help out the self-pity. Yeah I'm not a big fan of Emos because the clique of people in general are very self-absorbed and pessimistic (which is mostly due to them being a younger agegroup of people in general and that's how most teens normally act so I can kinda see where they are coming from.), however there are a few exceptions.

Goth: Much darker and more omnicidal then our fellow Emo friends, these people are influenced from the nu metal era from bands of the 80s (yes Goth has been around much longer than Scene/Emo trends g'day sir) such as Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, and more recently have influences from Nirvana, Slipknot, Cradle of Filth, etc. I don't know a whole lot about them tbh, but they're probably a lot more mature then Emos.

I have no idea what a Chav is so I won't even try to answer that question.

In conclusion, get informed before you throw out labels and look like a jackass. Also, a lot of stupid kids that may irritate you try to fit into these groups and if that's their thing, then hey great for them, no need to hate a whole group about it though lol.

I can't keep up with the distinctions between each different version of angst these days.

Although thanks Rocky for the primer with the differences between scene, emo and goth. Is it bad that I didn't even know that the term "Scene" existed as a label? How out of it am I????

    Re: Encounter's With the Unknown

The funny thing is, no matter how each is defined, no one follows it from what I've noticed. Someone who considers themselves "emo" is not even "emotional" or what ever the hell else its supposed to be.

The point I'm trying to make is its just a STYLE like everything else now days, there may be some exceptions but for the most part I find it a mockery when I see seneybobpers pretending they cut themselves because they think that's what they're supposed to do. People who actually do self mutilate are looked at as jokes.

*** How a person dresses has no reflection on how they deal with personal life; so to say a person who dresses the emo style is mentally distressed, thinks a certain way or is crazy like the opening post, is not fair.

lol wut? What does nu-metal have to do with goth music? Goth was derived from post-punk last I checked.

Japan? I don't think so. Visual Kei is not the same as emo. The music evolved from hardcore punk, mostly in the DC area, if I'm not mistaken.

Gypsy said it best. "Goth" and "emo" are subcultures based first and foremost in music and fashion, not belief systems. Like any subculture, they are not homogeneous; you cannot define someone using these terms.

    Until now!

    This^

Idk how people who term themselves goth, define the scene. But the way I see it, it starts with music...progresses with fashion. Now people who like this fashion and this music...generally find they have similar views on things like movies and books. It progresses from here into a general forum of discussion on pretty much anything. Anyone who says that subcultures have mascot belief systems are thinking, not of subculture, but of cults.

I also kind of wondered how Nu-Metal came into the discusion about goth. That and Nirvana? idk. Generally in the goth scene you encounter five major genres of music... Industrial; Darkwave; Goth Rock; Goth Metal and Ethereal. There are others present in the scene...Electronica, shoegazing, synth pop...etc...

When you consider origins, Post-Punk and Early Goth founders like Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division started the scene in England.
