edit for clarity: to be honest with you Cloud87 I have heard a metric assload of the stuff in my life and other than in official capacity (i.e. practice and rehearsal) I really don't care for recreational listening

I'm largely on the fence about it. I used to hate it until I went to college and there were literally 4 different country stations, compared to the one alternative and one rock station.

I definitely prefer the older stuff, like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, but I'm also really into southern rock, which borders country and is influenced by it. Stuff like Drive-by Truckers, Lucero, etc.

The moden country stuff seems way more like pop than anything, even though T Swift is a guilty pleasure of mine.

Mainstream country depresses me for some reason. I did used to listen to it more back when I was in grade school and my sister and mom listened to it all the time. Some songs are pretty awesome, though; "I Got Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks or "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue" by Toby Keith, for example. Also used to have a thing for Shania Twain and Faith Hill.

I listen to some alt country bands and folk/country bands, like Richmond Fontaine and The Avett Brothers.

Seems a crime to say southern rock and not mention Duane and Gregg Allman's band.

I guess I'm in a funny position because I firstly got into country music, but also then got really heavy into Clapton. I know Allman Bros. by way of having been into Clapton first. I thought to myself "country music is the best music, and Clapton is the best guitarist, so what if I played Country music like Clapton?"

I was very much a Bill N Ted kind of thinker about it. "We need a triumphant video, and that is why we need Van Halen on guitar...etc"

I dislike country music, as a person who listens to musics primarily for the instrumentals and not the vocal country and or western music goes against all my fundamental rulz of life.........
But But in saying that I found one I really really like...... Drake White I love his Southern style and really appeals to me for some reason.

Harry Choates, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Ronnie Milsap, O.B. McClinton, Stanley Brothers, among others released some really good music back in the day, though music was generally better decades ago as opposed to today, so it kind of makes sense that modern country music is shit.

It is a high pressure, high volume low return business, not unlike the video games industry, and people push and drive themselves to develop their style so hard that they can forget that country is meant to be sung with your natural voice. That is a difficult thing for many singers today, I believe. Natural voices are getting drowned out by not only virtuostic power R&B singing, but also digital vocal manipulation. Nobody really understands the fundamental principles of breath...they just want to computer it into shape.

So, natural, honest delivery is not really a known thing these days...people are kind of weirded out by it, frankly. It ain't like the radio, for sure.

In general, I like country music if it doesn't sound like country music. Kind of like the following:



This is also the same principle I have with gospel music. I like it if it doesn't sound like gospel. Check out my Spotify playlist called Thursday for more on that.

But back on to country music, I was raised on it, so much that I am burnt out of the stuff. It makes me physically sick to listen to it sometimes. Thankfully, I take my tablet with me to work and listen to Spotify when I need a music break. All that twangy and horrible accents are gut-wrenching. It would be different if the singers spoke with the accent, but there's a lot that only have an accent when they sing.

Now, when someone attempts country music from a different country, it seems pleasant to me. Like this:

The worst thing about country music is when it gets maudlin. Tuesday's Gone by Lynyrd Skynyrd is a good example (not to imply anything bad about it as a song, in fact I am saying that it does its job too well), and it's not even as much sad power as some of the stuff I've heard you know. Emo people think they know sad, country is the master of sad.

Country sad is just too sad. Too too sad, Waaaaaay too sad. It is drink a fifth of bourbon sad.

I tend to prefer peppy acts who have upbeat songs I really have had just about enough sentimentality to last me 1,000,000,000 lifetimes.

This makes my Screen Name kind of appropriate in a way that I've never until now thought about.
