    Music tastes change with age?

So over the last few years, I've really begun to realize how much my taste in music has changed. In general how I appreciate the more melodious tunes than clash clash bang bang stuff. Even lyrically now I appreciate the more mature songs (totally dropped bands like Blink 182, The C-Peps, OK Gos) Is it an age thing?

I'm sure that certain generations have music taste bred into their genes. Like Silver for instance will always love metal...at least I hope so for the sake of this thread haha. So I definitely understand that age isn't always the case but is it one of the bigger ones?

What about you all, how much have your tastes changed in the last year, two, three? Was it an age thing or something else?

I think music shifts with everything else in you life, like style. Every once in a while you reinvent yourself a little.

My music taste have been around the same, but I do notice the shifts when they happen.

elementary school days and under: Linkin Park/Backsteet/SpiceGirls>>Mid/Highschool: typical sceney bands/Alternative>> >Now: Indie/Electronic/everything.

This is how it's changed for me and I look back sometimes like...ew why did I like them? and or, why was I obsessed with so and so band?

I often think about this kind of idea with all aspects like "at what point will I throw out my skinny jeans and start wearing old people clothes?"

i dont think my musical taste has changed much... from like 97 to like 2002... i tend to still listen to that music more now than todays music... quality in lyrics and music isnt the same as back then. now it seems like people get lucky and come up with a catch phrase and then jus talk bull shtt around it and make up somthin with a keyboard and it just happens to make them rich i guess

Hah! I listen to more rock then metal man, but I do love a bit of both.
My drug of choice has consistently been a mix of Grunge Rock, a little Post Grunge, some punk and slower metal like Sludge/Stoner/Doom.

As time's gone by I've developed other tastes such as mainstream metal with female vocalists and even gotten into some game music, but it's always been side dishes to a main meal. So I suppose with age my palate has expanded but my musical taste buds aren't too dissimilar to what they used to be.

Re: Music tastes change with age?

I realized a while ago that I do not have such a thing as a "music taste". I just listen to everything I like.
When I was younger, I loved to listen to very very old songs (60's, 70's, that was already old in the 90's! XD), then I listen to J-Music a lot (as I watched many many animes at that time), then a friend pushed me back to real world and introduced me to pop music, then my brother introduced metal to me.... and then, finally, I realized, that I like ALL OF THEM.
Currently, I really love to listen to the music I listened to when I was younger (-> 80's & 90's mostly... but more 90's lately ^^"). I also like to just listen to the radio - so: pop music now. And I still love to listen to Metal.

So I'd say my music taste changed... but I wouldn't say my music taste exists. XD"

Re: Music tastes change with age?

I guess my tastes have changed a bit. I used to listen to Top 40 radio and like what I heard back in the early to mid 90's, (and probably a bit in the 80's; and I guess I still like some of it) and I used to not like any hip hop, or any music that was too hard or aggressive. Now I'll be listening to something, and think, "This would've been way too rough for me back in high school."

But I still like most of the stuff I used to listen to. Still like 60's, 70's, and 80's pop music, as well as some early 90's, and I still like most of the stuff I liked from '96 on (that was the year my brother introduced the bulk of ska and punk music to me; kinda feels like the year I discovered my musical identity, so to speak.) They Might Be Giants have been a staple to my musical tastes since 1990. So yes and no to the original question. Sometimes I kinda feel like I'm stuck in the late 90/early 2000's. Still rockin' the sideburns! Anyhoo...

I'm not sure if they change so much as you just kind of get your fill of one type of music, you've basically heard enough of it, and only a different kind will keep you interested.

I know that sounds like a grey line I'm walking, but I guess I'm saying you get bored of one type, while another will still keep your interest. It's not really much different than getting bored of activity X, and then deciding to take up activity Y instead.

I speak for myself, but all my favorites will always be favorites. I think the more time goes by the more time we have to discover new favorites and expand our tastes. Least, that's my experience with music.

my musical taste hasn't changed too much since like...97. i listened to (and still) a lot of mid 90s alternative rock and grunge. that was about the time i really started listening to music on my own; being at school i was bombarded with girls all into n*sync/backstreet boys/spice girls and they just never appealed to me no matter how much they tried to force it to me.
within the past couple years ive started listening to more indie and electronic.

If anything my music tastes have developed over the years. I started out listening to Nirvana and GnR. Then i heard some Metallica and AC/DC songs that liked, then it was Iron Maiden and now im starting to listen to more 70's rock like The Rolling Stones as well as a bit of Mindless Self Indulgence. So yeah always been rock, moved to heavy and thrash and now whatever i feel like listening to.

I don't think age has much to do, or perhaps anything, with what you listen too.

15 years ago, I started listening to metal stuff like SLAYER, PanterA, Fear Factory and Cannibal Corpse.

Nowadays, I listen to metal stuff like SLAYER, PanterA, Fear Factory and Cannibal Corpse. Of course, I've picked up some on some Hardcore like Hatebreed, Hoods and Sworn Enemy.

15 years from now, I imagine I'll still be listening to metal/hardcore.

My music taste is more or less the same it's been for the last 10 years or so. If anything I've branched out a little, but nothing too radical from what I've always liked really. Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Pentagram remains my unholy trinity and will probably remain so till the day I die

Re: Music tastes change with age?

I feel like my musical tastes have changed over the years, or rather expanded. I really started out listening to the oldies radio stations, since that's what my parents would always have on. After a while, like in high school, I really got into metal, like Maiden, Metallica and Slayer, with some more modern rock, and then Irish folk/rock/punk. As college rolled around, I got into all sorts of music, Beatles, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Cake, to name a few. I always hated country and pop, until my senior year though. It just became so overplayed, especially upstate, that it more or less became accepted.

I still love my Maiden, but now I'm just more well rounded in what I listen to. I've also dropped a lot of bands, just because I can't stand them anymore.

Re: Music tastes change with age?

My music tastes haven't really changed, just expanded. I like more or less everything - I never, ever warm to to RnB, Screamers or Garage.

I still like everything I've ever liked. I wasn't really into anything when I was a youngster. I liked S Club, but everything else was decided for me by mum or dad, as most of the music I listened to was in the car when I obviously wasn't allowed to ride shotgun. There was a lot of Natalie Imbruglia, Prodigy, Brittany Spears, Human League, Lighthouse Family, Sting and Fatboy Slim. The top three songs I'll always remember from my childhood are:

    SPOILER!!:

Up until the release of Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, my music tastes was pretty much that, plus I'd developed a taste for Eminem and D12 due to people at school too. Anyway, it was through playing Fahrenheit that I'd discovered my favourite band, Theory of a Deadman. I've played that game to death, and never got tired of it. Then I got the CDs, and played them to death and never got tired of it.

That was also about the same time I got the internet, so I had a place to listen to music properly and find more bands to listen to. When I'd met my best friend back in 2006, I picked up some of her music tastes and I started listening to less "cheerful" sounding stuff. Mum has never really liked rock, metal or alternative, and it took her years of me listening to Evanescence for her to get used to it and like it more. I started listening to 3 Doors Down, Finger Eleven, then eventually Disturbed and the like.

Lately, despite me hating the indie culture, I have grabbed a taste for it. And lots of game soundtracks.

    Btw, I've listed bands instead of genres out of fear of sounding like an idiot and labelling things wrong. x3;;

    EDIT: And believe it or not, I actually like Cheryl Cole's music now. I didn't see that coming. >>;

Re: Music tastes change with age?

I've always been a rap guy. In the last couple years, I really developed a real interest in rock music, from softer rock to metal, and my interest in rap had seemingly begun to fade. But...in the last few months, my interest in rap has really come back. So now I have an interest in both rock and rap, although my taste in different kinds of rap has changed. Alot of songs I used to love I can't really stand anymore, simply because I guess I've realized they're garbage compared to the stuff I listen to now.

I don't know what I'm talking about here now; I was just going on.

Re: Music tastes change with age?

I don't think music taste changes with age. (As in your age) I do however think that music tastes change with time. For some, music taste can change to whatever is popular at the time. (Phail on them )

I remember when I was in 7th grade, my math teacher used to listen to some old jazz records while we worked and it used to bug me so much. Now though, I actually remembered a few lyrics of the song and typed it in on youtube. Once I found it, I fell in love with the song and it's on my favorites now. Interesting how these things work...

I don't really think I developed a true appreciation for music til I got to high school. So as a 7th grader, I really didn't like many different kinds. Now I listen to just about everything. (And I actually mean that.) However, I'm not too big on many types of country. I lean twords bluegrass more. I really don't like screamo either. Mayhap I don't like all kinds of music...but only time can tell, right?
@ Pete: Great list. When you say Irish/Folk/Punk are you combining them? Like Dropkick Murphy?

Re: Music tastes change with age?

My taste in music has definitely changed.
Back when I was a lot younger, I used to be into so much crappy anime and J-pop/J-rock music. It was as if I only liked it because it was Japanese. I've since grown out of that though. I still like some, but not nearly as much as I used to. Actually, once I got introduced to enka music, I really started hating most other Japanese music.

I still listen to a lot of the stuff I used to listen to when I was younger though. I grew up listening to country music (it was pretty much the only kind of music I was allowed to listen to), so I have a soft spot for it, but it's mostly only for the older stuff. A lot of the newer country music has gotten too annoying for me.

i think it just one of those moving with the times things. I was caught up in the boy bands/Britney Spears fads in school and when I got away from that I got into the darker music like Evanesence and now I've moved on to Within Temptation and Lady Gaga and the likes. I will still listen to music I loved in school like Spears and Spice Girls if I'm in the mood for it though so I guess I haven't changed too awful much.

It really depends on the times. And if the song has been played to death on the Radio. My music depends on my mood. I'll play my techno/dubstep beats when I'm working out or feeling low. It makes me feel better. When I'm feeling nostalgic, I'll play the old songs. Whatever the mood brings, I always have music to suite the time. When I'm doing homework/writing, I will listen to anything and everything. It helps me think. I keep all of my music from way back when and incorporate the new ones that I download. It keeps things interesting. And I will appreciate a remix that has both new and old. Since there is always something new out daily, it's hard to keep up. Hence why the face of music always changes.

To answer the question, I'll have to say no. My music tastes haven't changed. It just depends on what my mood.

Well, when I was really little I absolutely idolised Britney Spears to the death, and then when I got a bit older (like about ten years old or something) I was like "Ew, dude, Britney Spears is for babies" like the good old hipster kid I thought I was. And now, if any old Britney songs come on the radio I'm like "YEAH!! ****ING CRANK THAT SHIT UP!". So yeah, I guess musical tastes do change with age really.

I liked a lot more pop when I was younger and rock music wasn't even a concept to me, whereas now it's almost opposite. I do still like pop music, but rock dominates my musical tastes a hell of a lot more.

Re: Music tastes change with age?

with age, comes many things. Things such as knowledge, experience, wiseness, reason and maturity. With all of these things taken into account, you would tend to anaylse why you like something more and eventually wont be able to find the interest in it you once had. Which is why nostalgia is a powerful emotional, it disreguards all of those things and lets you enjoy something just because you listened to it at a particular moment in your life.

I used to listen to a lot of smashing pumpkins (obsessed fan) and red hot chili peppers. Then I moved onto metal. Bands such as Slayer, Arch enemy and cannibal corpse. Then when I was about 15, I began listening to emo. I guess it was stuff I was relating to that gave me an interest in the music. The metal because I wanted to be different (i still like slayer and some bands even now) and emo because I felt I could relate. That was before I manned up and realised I was being a little bitch. Then directly after that , can you guess? It was 'hardcore', now being my most hated of genres. The idea that you can be tough and sensitive at the same time and being able to express that with public stupid teenage angst/clothing. 90 percent of songs ive heard all follow the same theme

"Ill see you when the sun sets" "ill devour your heart" "the soul of the shark" "theres blood in the water" "my hearts a raging fire" etc.

I know thats not the best example, but if you imagine those lyrics with a repetitive drop c tuning strumming open but to different tempos, you might understand what I mean.

Now im almost 21. Ive been listening to a lot of piano compositions and ambient music. I listen to almost anything as long as it sounds good to me. my playlist would now consist of

    Red hot chili peppers
Nesian Mystik (polynesian hip hop group)
    FF/Persona soundtracks
    monorail
    Sky eats Airplane
Grips n Tonic (aussie hip hop/rap duo)
    Bon jovi
and various other hit songs of the 80s and 90s.
maybe a LITTLE bit of dubstep because I find the producing to be top notch with a few artists. I just dont like admitting it because I hate the crowd accosiated with it.

But in the end, I guess thats what its all about. If you care about being accosiated with it. Id love to say I dont care, but thats part of what got me to this point. I didnt like hardcore because once I noticed how people changed, my perception of the music also changed. So with age I think people may realise this and just listen to whatever makes them happy. Notice how when you were younger you would more than likely stick to one genre and have friends who enjoyed the same. Maybe that wasnt what it was like for you, but for me music was a big part of growing up.

Only real changes to my music over the years have been me discovering more bands as time goes by. I still listen to pretty much everything I always have, pretty much any rock or metal from the late 60s to now. I don't forsee that ever changing.

Lol, I just watched the South Park episode "You're Getting Older", and it pretty much tackled the idea of this topic, among other things. It was a good one, though the ending was pretty much a downer. :/

Anyway, yeah. I can safely say that my music tastes have changed quite a bit since I've gotten older and experience more music. However, I do sometimes still find that I can go back and listen to the stuff I liked when I was younger and either have a good laugh about how cheesy it was (oh gawd, my boy band phase ), or just reminisce about the times I was going through when I liked whatever music I was listening to at the time.

Yes id say my music tastes have changed a tad with age ha by a tad i mean sorta drastically ha

Re: Music tastes change with age?

I was raised on country music, and then when my parents got back together, all that was played at our house was the 80s hair metal. I used to like country music, but now I can't stand it.

As a teenager, I liked pop music. Then classical and opera (I love to listen to Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman). Now, I am into KPop, MandoPop, and TokyoPop. I guess now that I think on it, I am really into world music.

I just looked at my CDs. There is maybe nine English CDs in my collection. The rest is Spanish, Italian, German, and French. It costs too much to get Asian music, so I just listen to it on YouTube.

I'm inclined to say yes. My own musical preferences went from jazz to hip hop, rap, and pop once I hit the teenage years. I like choral music to because that's what I sing.

Re: Music tastes change with age?

I'd say my taste in music has changed somewhat and I do believe it has a lot to do with age and a change in lifestyle. I go for classical music, Christian music classic rock, jazz, and video game soundtracks mostly. I don't listen to hip-hop/gangster rap, heavy metal, alternative/grunge/punk rock type stuff anymore.

Re: Music tastes change with age?

I used to listen to Hip Hop a lot, even more than Gothic Metal. I don't think it has anything to do with age, in my case it's all about quality, lack of quality to be more precise. Hip Hop went noticeably downhill several years ago and it's only getting worse while Gothic Metal is on the same level I expect from it, if not higher. I also got into classical music over the last few years, that's thanks to being exposed to it a lot I guess.
