Well, I just got back from seeing Les Misérables, and that is probably my favorite movie of the year. Maybe I shouldn't be deciding that right after seeing it, whilst it's fresh in my mind and everything else isn't, but to me, this was the most real movie I've seen all year. The more faithful adaptation in comparison to the Hobbit, better drama than anything I've seen all year, the best story, the most realized characters. I loved the way the movie told this story, the way the actors portrayed their characters, etc. The singing wasn't always amazing, but it was heartfelt. And I knew going in that certain songs were gonna rip my heart out, and I was misty-eyed pretty much the entire movie. My mom also loves this, and I saw it with her, my dad, and my brother.
The Hobbit was also good-I love that I get to see my favorite book on the big screen, love that I get to see Gandalf again, love that I get to hear certain lines directly from the book up on the big screen, thought the comedy in it was pretty good-but I wasn't impressed with the drama PJ tried to add to the story. Or some of the huge changes that changed the story... It was no Fellowship of the Ring. It was still very good though.
The Dark Knight Rises was a fitting end to the Dark Knight Trilogy. Some of the story was convoluted, but the action was fun, the drama was good, the characters were interesting, etc. Prometheus was better than a lot of people made it out to be; a lot of interesting ideas, and Michael Fassbender was great. The movie wasn't without its problems, but I felt the pros outweighed the cons by a lot.
I also liked The Avengers, John Carter, Brave, Wreck it Ralph, The Hunger Games, though they weren't as good as the above.
Project X... why did I see that? My brother wanted me to, I guess. It was alright-probably better than what I expected-but it was probably my second to least favorite movie I saw this year. Ted is probably my least favorite. It was better than I want to give it credit for, but it still wasn't as funny or good as a lot of people made it out to be. I don't remember laughing often (although "LOOK WHAT JESUS DID!" got me, I have to admit) and the story was generic. Also... Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter was pretty bad. In its defense, it was supposed to be, and you were supposed enjoy how ridiculous and over the top it was, but I regret that it wasn't more faithful to the book, as the book was amazing. Especially since the author of the book wrote the screenplay.
Still need to see Lincoln and Moonrise Kingdom. Don't remember what else I saw this year. This response is pretty damn lazy, sorry. Anyhoo...
Wuv, Yer Mom
EDIT: Saw Lincoln today, and it was great. The first bit (after the very beginning where the soldiers came over and were talking to Lincoln) had me worried because it was kinda dry and boring, the colors were all dull, and there was no music, but it drew me in after that. Thought Daniel Day Lewis was a very good Lincoln, thought Tommy Lee Jones was great too (well, everyone was really good actually). It's an accomplishment that a movie about politics was that compelling. So, include Lincoln in my "Greats" of this year. Anyhoo...
