Yea i know you guys probably know this but the 160 gig Ps3 it is not backwards compatible(meaning cant play ps2 games, actually none of the ps3s are now, they stopped making the 60gigs that were the backward compatible ones) after how much money was spent on this i thought i was able to atleast play FFX on it so i popped it in.....Unsupported Data.. so much money and you cant play ps2 games..it can play ps1 games because i just popped in my FFVII to replay it since its been awhile and it works fine..I hope they come out with a system update(probably is gonna cost money) that will be able to re program the emotion chip in the ps3,i think this was one sony's worst decisions..

I love Sony, but they have made a lot of dumb decisions over the past two years.I havn't bought a PS3 yet because I have been very displeased with the games coming out for it and the whole backwards compatibility thing.Atleast you can still play PS1 games, which leaves you with some classics like FF7,FF8,and FF9.
No. There is no BC ever. That won't be coming back. And yes, it was widely known and announced. I don't know how you missed it. The older 60gb PS3s do have Backwards Compatibility. But they're a rare find. I also can't stress this enough. If you want to play your PS1/2 games, USE YOUR PS2. It can play both. PS2s are dirt cheap now. Buy one. And as far as the games coming out, I don't know what taste you have in games, but there are a lot of good games out for PS3. Well, as far as my tastes go, anyway. Even a few that aren't of my tastes, there are a lot. So I don't know what you're talking about.

i do still play on my ps2 but im just saying i dont want to be moving around with a ps2 and a ps3 for ever, its just i dont see a good enough logical reason to not make the ps3's bc just my opinion and i love the games for ps3 hiro idk what your talking about lol
Ive got a 360 and the games that I like on it are also on the PS3 with the exception of a few.I like some exclusive games on PS3 but a lot of what Ive seen "LATELY" has not caught my interest.I'm not saying that every game on PS3 is crap just so that's clear.I'm just saying that I'm not big on the current games out for it or alot of the games that are coming out for it.I am very interested in the new game that's coming out sometime soon for the PS3 called MAG.

All I have to say to the people complaining about game titles is: Silent hill Homecoming Resident Evil 5 God of War III Final Fantasy XIII Versus Assassins Creed 2 +all of the other upcoming titles There are 5 games that are a must play in one way or another; there are plenty of good titles on PS3 to play. It is a given that the 360 and Wii are a little ahead of the curve but seriously the exclusiveness of some of these titles are worth it. I could rant on this for a while but I will move on. Sheena is right; if you still have your Ps2 I really don't see the room for complaint. If you really want a 60 gig backwards compatible PS3 they are out there, you just have to look for them. I found mine in one day so they are not that a rare of a find. It is a given now a days if you buy a PS3 you are NOT going to get the backward capabilities to the PS2. Sony announced this a while ago so it should not be a surprise to anyone. It is about the money and that is SOLEY what it is about. If you didn’t know this; Sony looses their asses on EACH unit sold just so you can have a top notch gaming machine. So it is inevitable that you are not going to get the full capability of the older models. The have switched from independent parts to integrated just so they give you the consumer something that is not going to break the bank for them. Even though you loose a little bit from the 60 gig you still get a 10 year gaming device. So what really is the complaint? Xbox 360 owners get to look forward to spending another large amount of money when their system becomes obsolete. About the price of the PS3 Look at it this way: For a Wii you have to pay for everything you want to do on the net For the 360 you have to pay just to get online Neither have a blue ray player so if you want one you have to spend the additional money to pick one up. The PSN is FREE to gain access to. Most of the titles on PSN are lower cost then Wii or 360 You get a wireless duel shock controller; this trumps either Wii or 360 I am starting to see less and less of a reason to gripe about the PS3; specially if you already own a PS2 and a PS3. Should I go on???

About backwards compat. Sony recently patently patented a programe that lets the software of the PS3 emulate the hardware that previously gave the old 60GB versions backwards compat. Its speculated that it will be released in a system update in the following months or year. I cant remember the actual article, but ill look around a bit and see if I can find it again, Ill post here if I find it.
That sucks. Sony let us down. D:
Call me Silver.
allright some people think that i am taking it this too seriously and that i seem like im crying about it! im not lol chill im just saying yes it would be nice but meier i was not aware that sony announced that they were not bringing the BC back ,i never heard it and i never read it.I even looked it up and i couldnt find many people talking about BC And it seems like from me posting my comment i got the answers i needed, thank you
i waited in line for my 80 gig reverse compatible i love it that is why i alwways get stuff my ps2 wass 600 when it first came out so remember get stuff at begining
Since Sony brought out the PlayStation 3 nothing has gone right, what I mean is that Sony was on top during the PlayStaion 2 era and now they're on the bottom. With the high priced system, no backwards compatibility, most of the game titles are played on all systems or being moved on to a different system. Sony needs to look back and see why they're PlayStation 2 did so great and try to do the same to the PS3. I own an X-Box 360, the last two eras I've been with buying PlayStation over any other company, but this time around I needed a change that my pocket can pay.

My bedroom is like a Sony Playstation Museum. Not a very good one mind, but it does have a working PSOne, a PS2, a PS3 and a PSP. As much as I love my PS3 to pieces, I'd rather that died than my PSOne or my PS2. Or PSP. And... there are some very good games coming out on PS3, some of which the Xbox 360 can only dream or <insert form of... something here> about. BC shouldn't matter - PS3 is the future of gaming. Well it does, but only if you were silly enough to chuck out or sell the PS2 when you got your PS3 in. *coughs*HeavyRainandFFXIII*coughs*

Why would you buy a $400 console if you're so out of touch with the industry that you don't know PS3s no longer have PS2 backwards compatibility? Isn't that the kind of mistake Grandmas make when they buy electronics as presents for their grand kids? Originally Posted by Mistress Sheena No. There is no BC ever. That won't be coming back. How are you able to make blanket statements to which there exists contrary evidence so often? It's a gift, really. As "You" already stated, SCE has recently patented a PS2 emulator and all the evidence I've seen thus far point towards it's later implementation into all PS3s via a firmware update. Supposedly it will be better than the emulator that currently resides within the 80 gig models, though I doubt it will be as good as the emotion engine in the 60 gigers. The PS2 is nearly finished. When it finally is retired, I think it's very likely that a firmware update will return PS2 emulation to everyone. And don't forget, PS1 games work on ALL PS3 models. Don't assume they don't work just because your PS2 games don't. Originally Posted by Silver And with every revision, more and more features seem to go. USB ports, BC, a card reader etc. Day-um... That's what happens when people keep complaining about high prices. The removal of BC was clearly a business move on Sony's part to promote PS2 sales, but I can't see why they would remove 2 of the 4 USB ports and the SD card reader other than to lower the cost of the product itself. You have to realize how much money Sony has lost on each PS3 sale. They've just recently become profitable, which actually makes me skeptical of a price drop given Sony's losses this year.

Until now!
Jin, it's called not knowing about it. -_-; Instead of beating around the bush, just call me out on not knowing it like Cesar does. >.>; But anyway, sounds pretty cool that they're bringing back BC to the PS3, although I don't really need it since I still have a PS2. And as Jin also pointed out, Sony goes in the red when every PS3 unit is sold. (Well, the first units, anyway. I don't know about now.) I think they cost somewhere around 800-1000$ to make each unit (keyword being 'think'), and they sold it for 600.
Hmm well it is good to know that some of the less fortunant PS3 owners will be able to start emulating PS2 games again, still I would have to recommend to keep ahold of a PS2 if you have a PS3. Also on a related note, I figured this article would help bring some things to light and might also resolve some questions. Second-Generation PlayStation 3 Features Cost Reduction, Supplier Shifts ? iSuppli Corporation Also here is a link for those that are confused about which models of the PS3 actually have backwards compatibility capibilities. http://www.us.playstation.com/News/ConsumerAlerts
I just lucked out. I got a 80g when it came out because I needed one. My PS2 was down and out. I am still disecting it and trying to save its life. I even had bought the 40g, went back, and traded it for the 80 just to play PS2 and PS games. This was a real stupid move on Sony's part. An even stupider move was that they somewhat allowed PS games to be played, but still sold PS games at the PSN Store. It would have been easier (but not any less stupid) to let PS2 games on and sell PS games at PSN Store.
FINISH HIM!

The PSN is FREE to gain access to. (With only a handful of games worth playing online...) This statement is completely subjective and baseless. Nearly every third party game is multiplatform these days and the PS3 exclusives with online play, while maybe not as good in your opinion to that of the 360, cannot simply be brushed aside. If the 360 and PS3 "worthy games to play online" libraries are handfuls of sand, you'd have to count individual grains to determine which is superior. Most of the titles on PSN are lower cost then Wii or 360 (You may be right there about the Wii, I wouldn't know, but there's a ton of games on Live Arcade for $5-$10. Some are even free.) [b]I don't really have any qualms with this statement, though it's probably a mistake to include the user created games in that calculation, if you were doing so.[b] Don't think me some hardcore PS3 fanboy, since I play Xbox quite a bit. I just get tired of the "PS3 has no good games" bullshit, especially now that 90% of games are multiplatform.

Sorry, just responding to what I percieved as a typical Sony fanboy statement... I usually hear that people think even Xbox Live Silver is a paid service, so naturally I assumed Meier was stating that as well, so no, I did not "know damn well" that he was refering to online play. Anyway, I was being playful with my "better on 360" statements. Hence the "XD" after the second one. If I were trying to debate seriously I think I would have been a bit harsher, calling names and what not. Though if you look at reviews, SH:HC is generally better reviewed on 360 than it is on PS3. Usually due to the new control scheme being better suited for the 360 controller (which admittedly, not much is). Also, RE5, while both versions have online co-op, the 360 is usually far more populated, since as far as I know, most PS3 online gamers are playing the likes of Resistance and uploading levels on Little Big Planet (Both great games, btw, and both being reasons for my upcoming PS3 purchase). It's hard to deny that Xbox Live is the winning service in terms of sheer membership, so one wishing to play online with more than a handful of people would probably prefer the 360 version.... I should have elaborated my points, I'll give you that, but hey, I was drunk last night. Sue me XD. Anyway, to the actual point of the thread, I'm looking forward to that update, since my PS2 broke before the 80GB's halted in production, and I've been itching to play Xenosaga for ages now.

Jin is right in his assumption about my comment on the online play and I should of been more clear on that statement. As for the titles you pointed out as being availible on both platforms, I never made mention of anything about sole exclusiveness to those titles on the PS3. I was just stating that they are good games in general and that they are availible on the PS3. Personaly I found the controls for SH:HC to be better suited for the PS3 but that is only because I am not use to the 360's control system (hence why I suck at Halo haha). And in reality it is almost inevitable that the 360 is going to have more online players on titles such as RE5 mainly because the there are twice as many 360s out there. As for the rest of the comments in your quote from me they are just personal preference and opinions so I am not going to touch on them. I don't see where you took it that I was bitching about the PS3 though seeing all I did was list some pros for that gaming system to help negate the main topic at hand. As for me being a typical PS3 fanboy I would have to naaa, SNES FTW. To be someone what on topic though, Xenosaga looks great on a PS3. Hell it even made Xenogears less pixilated and easier on the eyes.

Hell it even made Xenogears less pixilated and easier on the eyes. On the original PS3s before emulation support I presume. Trust me as I've played both and the emulation support PS3's graphics look downright shocking on any kind of display I've played on. Xenogears also seems to look better on a PS2 to me... And I agree. SNES (, Atari and ****ing Neo Geo Arcade cabinets) FTFW! Seriously look into getting a Neo Geo cabinet actually. Awesome games and I've had a few auctions selling one for under $1000 AU (possibly half that in US currency) and most have come with a few carts like Metal Slug and the like.

You speak as if there are only 50 people in the world that play games on PSN. I was only refering to RE5. Me and my friend Mike used to play Rock Band 2 over PSN all the time and had no problem finding matches. I mean really, look at the advertising for RE5, you'd think it was a 360 exclusive the way it's hyped over here. Out of the 6 people I know personally who are lucky enough to have both a 360 and a PS3, only one has RE5 for PS3. That being said the only reason he got a 360 in the first place was for BC and Forza Motorsport 2... and he was sorely dissapointed o_o. Anyway, as for Xenosaga looking better on a PS3... that I think would be a hard thing to do. Xenosaga looks great regardless. Then again, if a PS3 can make the PS2 version of Guitar Hero look tolerable, I think I may be in for a shock. Finally though, I think I owe you an apology, Meier. I'm just used to seeing people who are completely biased against one system entirely and can't see the merits of anything else. I like PS3, and I like 360. The only system I really hate is the Wii, but even then I like a few games for it XD.

I'd have to wonder then if the cable would make a difference. Would an SD signal running through an HDMI cable look worse than through RCA cords? I just don't really see why an emulator would have worse (or better for that matter) visuals than the real deal. Sound, I can understand, performance, I can certainly understand, but I don't see why the visuals would be different. Who knows though, perhaps you're correct.

To some people nothing beats the real thing, even if they have to hunt the real thing down when it's obsolete and getting rarer. But I have noticed regardless of display device/cables I've gotten unusual blurring (possibly caused by upscaling) and in some cases lines or other artifacts that simply aren't there when I'm playing the same game on the console it was intended for (PS2 mainly, a few PSX games are also noticeably effected, many in terms of that blur). Metal Gear Solid looks total arse on any PS3, especially on a true HD TV/Monitor.
