Ultimately it all boils down to how the PC market is perceived to respond to the release of the games. They probably saw the sales figures of VII and VIII, which were arguably the most popular and best selling (not best, per se) titles in the series. If those super popular games didn't sell all that well, due to the popularity of the PSX as a system, and if the trend of the FF sales in general (units sold, not dollar figures) is on the decline, Squeenix can actually lose money.
Though, when VII and VIII first came out, PCs weren't really all that common in homes and were much more expensive. That's not so much the case today.
