    Final Fantasy XV - Turn Based or Action RPG?

    Hey guys, take a look at this link:

    I searched to try and find a similar thread and couldn't, so thought I'd put one up concerning this.

    Basically, the article states that Square may be evolving Final Fantasy XV even further than they did with XIII, and getting rid of the traditional turn-based battle system in favour of an Action RPG. I remember the mixed reviews of XIII and it's exit from the more traditional ''Final Fantasy'' feel and battle system, and I can't help but to think that this may be met with the same criticism, although, if it manages to keep the ''Final Fantasy'' feel, whilst having elements of Fable/Fallout/Elder Scrolls to it's battle system (albeit not a total blueprint copy, more an improved version) then it could possibly appeal to a huge audience. Then again, that was the point in XIII, and the criticism still came.

    For me, as long as it is open-world, and non-linear in it's storyline, and has plenty of time-consuming quests, then I'm all for it, as an experiment to see if it will improve upon the last few games in the series.

    Anyway, it will be different. That's all I have to say about it. I mean, I am neither pleased or disgusted by the idea. That's because most likely, I will not be able to afford the game or the system it will be played on.

    I Think Final fantasy should Just be Final fantasy the thing that really killed FFXIII For me was the lack of sidequests it was so linear and in my mind the worst FF. But at the same time it worked for FFXII Which was a great game although i always felt there was sumthing missing with that game

    Yeah, I agree, as much as I loooved XIII, it was lacking exploration and side-quests. XII was awesome, although, like you say, it was lacking something that I can't put my finger on, although it wasn't lacking in time-consuming quests

    XV, If it will be an action RPG, should totally revert back in terms of storyline depth. I just hope that magic won't have to be equipped one spell at a time, such as in Fable and Elder Scrolls

    We have a lot in common yeah FFXII Was missing Sumthing like I didn't feel the need to complete it unlike FF9 etc

    FFXIII Is a dificult one. I Could not fault the FFXII Battle system thought it was epic but i did not like FFXIII Only bein able to control one party member was not good. they tried to improve perfection in my mind which can't be done and don't get me started on the side-quests of FFXIII

    I pretty much feel the same way Michael Swayne does. While it would be interesting to see Square Enix go back to using turn-based gameplay, I don't mind if the next game ends up being an action RPG.

    I really hope they don't make FFXV as an action-RPG. I like the turn-based system. To bad FFX was the last that had it.

    It kind of seems like theyve been going towards this for awhile. I will not be surprised at all if its an action RPG. I prefer turned based though. Especially turned based where you have time to think and dont have to hurry to hit a button. I think it makes the games more strategic and relaxing.

    If they make it an Action RPG, the world should be extremely fantasy-medieval. If they make it turn-based (and I mean like Pokemon turn based) the world should have a cyberpunk-techno thing going on. As long as there is a crystal, chocobo, Cid, magic that advances with suffixes such as aga, aja, and ana, and some vague reference to a Void and Interdimensional Rift that could one day be used to link the games and flesh out the Dissidia/Theatrythm universe. I'm cool.

    So FF XIII was action RPG and you could only control one character? That's scary! FF games should be about tactics, strategy, exploration, interaction, not mere pressing buttons and going through linear story.

    I agree I would love to play a game like Final Fantasy XV if it was action based. if anything this would be the first game i would have BOUGHT since Final Fantasy XI first came out. Yeah i sat down and played or watched someone play the other games. and Tactics was a great game. but im getting more away from turn based combat into something more action orientated.

    You can have Strategy in an action styled game. especially if you have a well diversed world. With creatures, focus on the elements so something on the idea of XI was great with 6 elements and then light and dark. and how everything is weak to something. It does not have to be a world map but it could be country or even continental that way you can put more definition into the world. Which was what i found fun of the elder scrolls.

    So strategy would come into play by having difficult monsters or taking down multiple enemies at once by allowing you built character to hire companions that are based on race. sex and job class. you hire on a Female Elven Black mage. etc. have up to you and 4 other members.

    If they really want to get into having people play a game like that. why not make dungeons or special places a community thing where they take board quests to dungeons and join others where they can get nice weapons, armor or materials. or sign on for arena and challenge other players for glory of battle. Having a offline game that can have a player host raids or PvP matches is a great way to expand on gameplay.

    Immersive, Though that can scare some people you can have an immersive world and still make a great role playing story. like say you can not purchase certain things at lower level because you did not further the story and get reputation that would have people trust you enough to allow you to purchase such things like a house or get training on more spells.

    I can go on for hours for how I would like to see XV. but those are some ideas they could run with... if they cared.

    I think Square is trying too hard to please everyone
    They even said that in XIII-2 they would go for a more "western" feel, which I don't think is needed. That wasn't was FF was known for in the first place, FF should be what it is: FINAL FANTASY. If they do that, everything else will just fall together. I also think they should bring back the old staff members.
    But hey, I want to see how XV is turning out. If it succeeds in being a action RPG with a Final Fantasy feel, I'm up for it!

    They need to go back to their roots, as I've said for the umpteenth time. None of this pseudojapanse shit with androgynous characters and a super serious story. Take a look at FFVI or IX. They're lighthearted games with a fair amount of seriousness and killer stories to boot.

    Go turn based, make strategy key and make it so you have to think your actions through. I don't want to see another gambit system, where you can just program every battle and ride it out. I also want characters that are unique throughout the entire story. I hate how characters in the newer games are more or less the same, especially in FFX, where everyone gets the same exact skills if you level up enough.

    By turn-based are we talking about old-school or ATB? Cause even though XII and XIII were way more dynamic they were still turn-based. As with most of the time, I am like water and am down for whatever. An old-school turn-base system would be nice. Though seeing what SE does with a FF action rpg would be neat too. What about it being a Tactical RPG?

    Be honest now. Only a few games in the series have the characters truly been unique. FFIV and FFIX are the only ones where the characters are unique throughout.

    Yeah the cast of VI have their special ability. In VII and VIII they got limit breaks. But in those games you could make them into anything, learn all the magic. So they are pretty much interchangeable. III and V had the job system. II had crap ton of freedom. X was a mixture of unique classes yet the player could make them into anything. XII was open customization. All the characters got every role, though not all the skills associated with the roles in XIII.

    The thing is Versus is going to be action rpg along the lines of Kingdom Hearts/Crisis Core style gameplay which isnt a bad thing, however I would like to see a return in a way to the old school way however after just playing through FFXIII-2 I really enjoyed it which is more than I can say about XIII which I was totally let down by. I mean battle mechanics were aweful, if your party leader fell it was game over yet the AI characters could revive each other but not the leader? That for me was pretty bad.

    In FFXV I would like to see a kind of old school style with a big world map with a few different continents, airships which you can fly again, proper summons none of these transformer/power rangers rubbish, a return to fun mini games and sidequests like the card game in VIII or something. Would also love a return for chocobo breeding or chocograph hunting, that was fun. None DLC optional bosses as I feel DLC is what is destroying games these days, its ok if its an expansion pack which gives like extra 25 - 30 hours of gameplay just none of these (3.99 to fight another boss with a 0.5% chance of capturing)

    I did enjoy the quickness of XIII-2 battle system and loved the added monster party member, which I think they could expand on this in XV by having 3 or 4 party members, one of them a summoner who can summon a monster or eidelon into battle for a short period which would finish with a special attack, so kind of like the monster party member in XIII-2 but for limited time. Summons should start from the likes of Chocobos and Moogles to the likes of Leviathan and Bahamut. I know it probably will never happen however but it would be nice. Also a good story, a good blend of characters (including optional ones), also include those cinematic tings from XIII-2 as they were pretty fun, oh and the Steal and Mug commands back.
