That sounds cool, I'd definitely like to see those. When WM and I were first started the game club, i told him that i thought it'd be funny to make a short demo of sorts based around some of the staff and members here at TFF. Sounds like somebody has done it already though. He actually is working on a project for the Brotherhood of Doom. To seriously work on something in Rpg maker 2000/2003/XP, you have to have a serious motivation or inspiration and recently i just haven't had that. But honestly, this makes me think of a great idea, an old school cult of kefka video/presentation of sorts in RPG maker!! Not something like Jin did with the staff members at TFF but something for old school RPG players to appreciate. Look for it in the near future.

Anyhoo..after that long post I don't want to rant more. I've decided after seeing the outcome of my thread I'm going to picking up Okami soon to tide me over until Rogue Galaxy. When i get the game i'm also going to reserve Rogue Galaxy as well and hopefully get that demo in the process. Also i'm hoping to get We <3 Katamari soon as well.

Oh man your avatar is hilarious BTW. Is Braska Spira a member here or something?

On an old school note, have any of the DS owners played Children of Mana? I bet you have Loco, having the game hookup and all. It seems to be getting very mixed reviews, IGN to my surprise gave the game an 8! Kinda from i gathered they said it was very good at being a fun dungeon crawler hack and slash kind of game, but anyone expecting a new Secret of Mana will be dissapointed. Then on the flip side, gamespot gave it an 5.8..ouch and gamespy a 2.5/5 stars.

*Sigh* I hope atleast one of these new mana games will turn out to be decent. I'm beginning to lose faith..it seems like all the new titles are keeping the look and of the past games, but stories and gameplay are becoming more and more shallow.

I'm not sure if he's still around, I know that he changed his name after awhile to something Zanakarunan...i dunno something about Zanarkand lol He used to go about claiming to be the world's biggest expert about why FFX is better than any other FF made before...as youcan imagine this brought him into Dawezy;s crosshairs. You should goto DD's site he still has ALL the BS gifs he made back then. This is just the one he made for LC and me XD
On anither note my SN at SU still uses my personal gif m,ade by DD heh.

HOLY SH*T!

I thought i was the only guy constantly annoyed by him. He was around a lot when i first joined and i remember arguing with him about stuff. He ADORED FF X, he would go on and on about how superior it was to every other title in the series. I forgot why i got into an argument or said something to him..i'm not sure if he was actually putting down some of the old school games or what. If i only i could find some of those old posts haha. I haven't seen him around lately at all though.

Yeah bring on the project Jin!!

And if any DS owners see my question on my last post feel free to answer it.

@GLC, I'm cautious about Children of Mana because the last game in the series, Sword of Mana was extreamly disapointing in my opinion. They took away the awsome two player capabilities and made the person who hung around as a CPU crap and uncustomisable as a character. But of cause the 3 before that Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana, and Seiken Densetsu where kickass. Since you just said people expecting another Secret of Mana will be disapointed, i'm now even more worried. I want another Secret of Mana because it was such a great game. So no I havn't played it evidently.

Your idea for making a RPG maker presentation for TFF sounds cool, You know I've always wanted to make something on RPG maker, but I have never had the patience or determination. Oh and the fact that I don't even know how to do the simplest triggers on it might contribute a bit, I've tried to learn how to do it a few times, but the help file is like a university textbook. I need an actual person to teach me how to use it.

Speaking of Old skool game makers has anyone heard of ZZT?

Yeah, from what i read basically the gameplay is an EXTREMELY basic version of the combat in Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 3. Essentially, it's a dungeon crawler hack and slash kind of game like Diablo, etc. It's basically fun for the multi player i guess, but it seems like nothing else at that, and the combat gets very repetitive.

So i've started some basic work on my Old Skool Cult of Kefka presentation in rpg maker. I'm not divulging what it's about, who's in it, etc, want to save that for the final project. BUT, i do have one teaser screenshot of sorts that i whipped up this morning. If it you think it looks familiar..it does, or atleast it should.

The name ZZT sounds familiar, but honestly I can't think off the top of my head what it is. What is ZZT?

Hey there chaps. Things have been pretty hectic in my world as of late, so I really haven't had much time for all of the old recreational activities. To sum it up; been working hard, met someone special, and am generally enjoying life as difficult as it is sometimes. I think there's a certain feeling of satisfaction that makes it all worth it. Anyway, my vacation will be starting pretty soon, so whenever I'm not visiting with friends or family, etc., I'll try to get posting again.

On another note, 5 years ago today was when I signed up. Man, a lot of stuff has happened since then. Crazy.

The biggest thing that irritated me about Braska Spira was the fact that he was an absolute graphics whore. He wanted to push for FFIV to be remade into 3D so that the "new gamers" could enjoy the game without having to suffer its horrible lack of graphics.

Oddly enough, he claimed his second favorite game was the original Final Fantasy, if I recall correctly.

But yes, him and I got into it big over graphics. He irritated me to no end, and it ended up being all us Old Skool mods ganging up on the guy and I think he even got banned at some point.

As for the whole RPG Maker idea, I like it. I'll tinker around with it as well on my end to try to get some experience with it before I try to get anything more serious. After all, my oldest dream was to design video games. Perhaps I could "write" my story through an RPG game. Yes, that would be sweetness.
OLD SKOOL - A positive appellation referring to when things weren't flashy but empty of substance, were done by hard work, didn't pander to the lowest common denominator, and required real skill. Labour-saving devices, shortcuts that reduce quality and quitting before the task is done are not characteristics of "old skool."

In reference to computer games, refers to a game that had substantial playability without flashy graphics or eye candy. Old skool gamers appreciate difficult maneuvers, careful planning, and scorched earth policies.

In reference to role-playing games, old skool refers to games that tested players' wits, could kill off careless characters, and required dedication and inner strength to play. Old skool games didn't pander to the ideas that everyone is created equal, that all options are open to all races, that the markets were somehow free, and that a quasi-medieval society could have near 100% literacy.

See also classic.

Oooo, an RPGMaker project eh? Sounds tasty. As for the two that I made...wasn't at least one of them uploaded to your site Cesar? I can't remember. Otherwise, the files are way to damn big for regular display means. Anyways, I'm hoping for the best from that, Général Leo.

I really don't have much to say for myself. Still playing Tactics, on chapter 4. I just killed that pretty old man, Elmdor. Shame. I have FF9 all lined up to go next as well; it's been a while since I've played that one.

Oh yes, and although I was not around during the Braska Spira era, Dawezy's gifs were helluva halarious.

Yeah if this Braska Spira guy is the same one i'm thinking of..he was just recently around because i only joined a month or two ago. His name while here was Ted Zanarkand if i can remember correctly? I was new here so I didn't want to be going making enemies of myself so I just laughed at him behind closed doors. I do remember blasting him about SOMETHING though, i can't think what though. All i remember is he was a 20 something software programmer or something (which he stated in his sig/profile) and he loves final fantasy, "especially Final Fantasy X, because it superior to all the others." (which i am pretty sure he also stated in his sig). I don't know, there were some other laughable things i remember about him that i can't think of right now. Well i do remember how he would rant about how much he loved Yuna.. And i do specifically remember the graphics whore part too, i wonder what he has to say about FF XII and it's graphics? Kinda puts X's to shame.

@Jin Anyhoo, just checked out your two projects Jin! Haha good stuff indeed. I haven't been around enough to know all the people especially hobbes, but it was pretty damn funny..especially Dawezy and his alcohol and hentai. I'm glad my project i'm making isn't like what you did though or i'd feel like a copycat little beyotch.

@Dawezy, hilarious GIFS, and well done too. Needless to say, my rpg maker project will be along the lines of these animations you guys are making but on a much bigger scale. As much as i rip on characters like Tidus, i have to say that Edward to me is one of the biggest bitches in the FF series yet.

@Setzer, ha thats definitely old school! That's really cool though, i'm gonna have to look into that. I'm all about simple programming languages since i dont have any real education or experience in terms of programming. That'd be quite the project to recreate a FF game in that, but i'm sure it could be done.

@psiko, yeah rpg maker can be fun just to toy around with. I'm the kind of person who learns better by just trying things myself. I don't think i ever read any tutorials on rpg maker, i was just young, eager to learn and make rpgs, and had a lot of free time on my hands i guess. Once you get the hang of things, it's not really the skill, but just the time it takes to make things that gets to you. (though i'm sure there are a LOT of things i still don't know how to do) I'm so lazy and unmotivated now compared to 4 years ago. Oh well, this Old School Cult of Kefka thing should provide for a bit of fun.

Speaking of old school gaming, has anyone heard of this Super Paper Mario for the Wii? Looks like its gonna b a bit of a throwback to the old 2D platforming days mixed in with some 3D parts too..trippy.

@GLC, Well I guessing that this Super Paper Mario is the next in a series of Marios RPGs, which are great by the way. They had had one for each console. Super Mario RPG on Snes, Paper Mario on N64 and Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door on Gamecube. I've played the Snes and N64 one and they are truly great spinoffs of a Final Fantasy like adventure. The Paper mario are 3D games where the characters are cut out pieces of paper, which they make a lot of joke about during the game, like mario not getting hurt by a long fall because he floats down like a piece of paper. So the game is a mixture of turn based RPG and platformer because you jump around like normal but if you jump on enemies it allows you to have a pre-emptive strike.

Anyway thanks for the great new about a Paper Mario coming out on Wii, because I love those games.

@Dawezy, I like the look of the game you made, I pretty much just watched the intro though, pretty funny. So how bad was this Hobbes guy?, worse then Braska Spira?

Lol, Jin made the game.

But Hobbes was a religious little right-wing bitch, wasnt quite at Braska's level (in relation to attempting to highjack old-school marvels) but he was.. well.. damn, words cant put together how much of a fuckup he was ~ honestly, Jin, Scorp, me and Loco were all reasonably active at SU.. hell, I was even an Admin of the damn place and worked on site content with DSH (SU founder, good guy ^^). Due to DSH scoring a full-time job which he enjoyed like hell he entrusted the domain/forum/site to me and Hobbes.

At the time I wasnt overly html savvy, nor PHP for that matter.. but I knew how to work the Admin Forum thing and keep everyone on SU happy & tweak the battle plugin, all the users were loving it. If I recall tho, Hobbes didnt share any of my enthusiasm in the venture and well.. decended into whining, bitching and holding schoolyard-bully-esque grudges.

Sigh.

The domain payments (which John/DSH were taking care of) expired and SU kinda.. lost its lifeline there and then. Domain was down for a few monthes, cant really remember - a new fellow came along, Feywn, or however the hell you spell it. Domain is up and running fine now but I havent touched in it a good 8+ monthes, for the interest has left me entirelly and the forums are as active as a snail after being crushed by a car tire.

Heh.

Basic summary.

Did I make any Gifs of him? I forget. lol

CP: Hentai movies, and misc pornographic materials.. oh, and Oblivion.
SPOILER!!:

Yeah it is the new game in the Paper Mario series, but it's actually not an RPG at all. It's a full fledged platformer basically (has a few rpg elements i guess, basically mushrooms give you hearts instead of making you bigger like the old titles among other things), nothing at all like the first two paper mario games though. Well the look is exactly the same as them, but the gameplay is significantly different. You can switch players too, kinda sounds like Super Mario Bros 2 doesnt it? I actually have never played the two original paper marios but I'm quite excited about this one. I could just never get into the first two, because I didn't like how they dubbed the original paper mario on the nintendo 64 as a sequel to super mario rpg. They both are rpgs for sure, but they weren't at all alike, and super mario rpg was developed by square and the paper mario games certainly wasn't. I'm not doubting they are good games though, I will probably get the original on my VC when i get my Wii, and hopefully the second one for the gamecube if i can still find it around.

Haha that's hilarious about Hobbes, too bad you don't make more GIFs of him.

Ah oblivion..i really need to get that soon. Knights of the Nine is out here too i believe, let the expansions begin!

Tried to get back into playing CS, but man after playing DoD it seems way too hard. I was getting my ass kicked, I'd rather just stick to playing DoD. I can get high, play that game, maybe get drunk a little, and still do fine. CS i'd get my ass handed to me on a stick either way.

Oh damn, you just crushed my hope and dreams about the next Paper Mario. Because to be honest I hate Mario Platformers....

Oh Zro, the memories you bring back. *still waiting for one with me* >.>

And yes, I made those silly RPGMaker things. Dawezy, indeed, I was just lazy as hell with the names. XD

Boo Oblivion! I say it again.

Nearing the end of les Tactiques; just the deep dungeon to go. Gotta love that place. I'm already having ideas for next time though. I'm thinking of using the people I rarely use (that aren't my own characters) such as the Worker 8 (the robot), Reis (the dragoneer), the Divine Knight (whatever her name is, Milodoul or something) and maybe Cloud? Probably not Cloud, I don't like him in that game. His moves take way too long.

In case anyone didn't know...or rather, seeing as how I don't think anyone does, to everyone: I'll be away starting Saturday and won't be back until the following Sunday. I'm going down to Tennessee to see Ellie, so the last thing I want to do is talk to you clowns. And just incase I forget to post this later, I'm doing so now. Woot.

Wow great GIFs all around here.

Haha yeah i know u like that Oblivion more Maybe i should just get them both for the PC to compare.

Yeah when i played thru tactics i leveled up everyone in my entire party to the highest level so i got a chance to play with all those characters even if i didn't really want to. Meliadoul was really not that bad, but i would choose Orlandu and Agrias over her, she does have all the break abilities though i think doesn't she? (armor break, mental break, etc), those can be useful. Worker 8 i often teamed up soley with Orlandu . They made for quite the strange duo. Reis i thought was actually a really intesting character. I even got the heaven and hell knights to maxed out levels though. And Cloud too, i basically used Cloud as a normal fighter and changed his class to Knight. So i didn't have him use any of the limit breaks, but he was sweet none the less. With him, Orlandu, and Ramza i could never be defeated.

So i'm getting further into Grandia..man i have to say i love this game. Enjoying much more than FF XII even, there's just such a charm about it. The music is great, the characters and their voice acting, sprite based graphics are nice though there this is noticable slowdown in my parts. The storyline is engaging, but most of all i love its battle system and character development.

Have fun in ol' Tennesee Jin.

Damn, with all the great things you dudes keep saying about Final Fantasy Tactics, I really want to play it now, any ideas on a good way to get it?

As for what I'm doing I'm still Zelda, I thought is was nearly at the end. I finished the 4th temple and I thought there were 5, turns out there's 7.

I havn't gotten to play Oblivion yet either, I only watched a freind playing it for about 10 minutes and yes the graphics were posibly the best I've seen. But there is this freind of mine who is putting me off the game because he won't stop talking about it and it's getting quite irritating. So maybe I'll just wait for Elder Scrolls 5. Hmm, I wonder what the next generation consoles will look like, thinking ahead pretty early arn't I.

Several Ideas on how to get it actually. It really depends on what you want. Do you want an .iso to run it off your comp? Try Deadfrog or Hogfire, or any number of p2p sharing progs. I would recommend using ePSXe emulator for this. ( I been using it for years now ) If you want the actual CD that might pose a bit more of a problem. Outside of the occasional pawn shop, gaming store. PSX games are hard to come by. You might check out Amazon or maybe eBay for that, of course you'd need a memory card as well. Good luck there.

And don't let Zro fool you he has SOOO many more in the epic tales to share, he just needs to get off his lazy bisho ass and share them lol ( DD too, but you can always just cruise his site for them as well )

Yeah those are certainly good ideas for getting FF Tactics as stated above. You definitely should play the game, it's great.

In the world of old school gaming, I would like to bring two games to the table, Ocarina of Time 2D, and Metroid Prime 2D. Two old school takes on modern games. What do people think about these games, would you play them and like them over the newer versions?

For the Zelda it's really hard to say. I love both Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past, i'm not sure which I like more, but needless to say i'd love the 2D remake. Though i'm not sure if i would like it more than the original. I haven't played Metroid Prime but I definitely like the side scrolling Metroid games especially Super Metroid so If it's anything like that I'm in.

Wow, great ideas GLC, I'll definately play OoT 2d, unless someone can stop me and I doubt it, and from the screens it looks like it'll be Snes goodness, and those Zelda's were great as well. As for Metroid Prime, it looks pretty good too, but you finish Zelda first you hear. Go for it GLC.

Still having trouble finding FFT, I've tried Limwire and it comes up with hundreds of FFTA but no FFT and on Deadfrog I only found it's soundtrack, but I was just looking on the site, I'll have a better look later for where you download the P2P.

Oh no i didnt make those if thats what you think, they are fanmade projects. Both have playable demos too..i think Metroid's is at it's site but the zelda one doesn't have an official demo of the snes version though he does using the gb version. You can find a real early demo of the snes version but not at the site i'd have to find the link. Probably going to be a long long time before we see finished products in those if we ever do.

I would try torrentspy or somethin for FF Tactics..i know they would have it. *cough*cough*

I think that I would like to play a 2D version of both games. I like the feeling of 2D games. I have never been a big fan of bad camera angles, rotating cameras, and the 3D game feel. I love both of the original games but would really like to play them with an old school feel. I think that 2D games have a special nostalgic feel about them also which just makes me happy to play them.

One such example of a great nostalgic feeling game would be altered beast which i just got in the Sega Genesis collection. That game is great! I love that your shirt rips off when you power up! Now that is real gaming! I also really enjoy that you can be a green werewolf. I think that more games need to go back to that kind of gaming.

I totally agree. When i think of some of my best snes gaming experiences i think of Super Metroid and Link to the Past, so if they could keep that same quality, they'd be great. I too am a fan of Altered Beast, i'm hoping to get it when i get my Wii. It's one of those classic arcade style games. I was wondering what happened to the remake for the PS2. When i checked IGN, i guess it was just never released stateside though they do have a lot of info on it here.

Hmm...well, I'm gonna play Critic here, and comment on the fact that the Metroid Prime 2D looks rather...eh...idk...can't call it 8-bit, but it's certainly kinda sub-par for 16-bit. >_<;

They should've used the pallete from Super Metroid (it's easily accessible, trust me, I've got sprite sheets out the ass from it ~.~) and remade Metroid Prime using that. I commend them for attempting to just create new ones, but it looks kinda...bleh. Good idea tho, mind you.

The Link to the Past style Ocarina of Time has some merits to it tho, since it looks like they're mostly using the LttP selection for sprites, and only creating what they have to.

Yeah i agree, i don't know WHY they didn't use super metroid? I was expecting it to look like super metroid but was dissapointed to see it resembles the newer gba games more. I think Ocarina of Time 2D is dead on though. The creator actually made a program, "Zelda Creator" to be able to make your own game using the link to the past engine. I just wonder when the final will finally be if it even happens.

Heh, I wonder what Brask Spira would say now, seeing us talk about making newer games old skool.

Some other games I would really like to see remade include, Majora's Mask, FF7, and some D&D titles like Icewind Dale.

There is is mate of mine who I constantly argue with about why older games are just as good as newer games. But you keep on coming back with remarkably creative and unbeatable reason, but it's old. That is the only reason he's ever given and I don't understand his reasoning because a game being old dosn't make it have any less gameplay or make it any less fun then when it was created in the first place. It just seem that some people are unable to appreciate what masterpieces older games were when they are just seeing all the eye candy from the X-box360 and PS3. It seems to make people think the older games are sub par in comparison. If he was to join this forum I think he would be the next Braska Spira, although he hate Final Fantasy as well so he would be Braska Spira x 4.

Back to the topic of the Zelda remake I wonder how some of them temples are going to be recreated, like the Water Temple with it's rising and lowering water level or maybe it would be better if they made them completely different anyway, to allow completely new game play.

Those 2D Ocarina of Time screen shots made me smile and possibly ejaculate. I may just have to look into that.

My Tactics file is abandoned because I got bored and decided to make a new file. I also threw out the idea of using less used people just because. I first started with trying a 5 Mediator party, but then decided that I didn't want to go through that hassle just yet. That'll be a challange when I get around to it. So now I've decided to use classes that I rarely use. I've decided on an Oracle (which I just love for some reason), keeping Ramza as a Squire perhaps, a Time Mage which I may turn into a Calculator and some fighters yet to be deteremined. It should be interesting. Also, I'm toying with the idea of "purifying" the classes. That is, only using reaction and auto abilities that come from either their primary or secondary classes. So no Knights with 2-swords, which I find to be ridiculously cheap as it is.

Anyways, this is my last post before I depart to a place where there isn't 2 feet of snow on the ground. Cheers mates, enjoy my absence.

yeah braska spira would summon his strongest aeon on us or cry like a little girl if he heard about our discussions.

@Setzer, Yeah it'll be certainly interesting to see how the temples are created i agree. Things like the water temple could be done though it will interesting to see how he keeps faithful to the original. One thing that this project has going is an amazing amount of authenticity when it comes not only to the look of the game, but the gameplay as well. I agree that people are getting spoiled by the eye candy though.

Those 2D Ocarina of Time screen shots made me smile and possibly ejaculate. I may just have to look into that.
@Jinjatsu, same here same here. In addition that site, these two forum topics have a lot of info and developments on the game as well as extra screenshots comparing the original and 2D versions

Old Thread (closed because of spam) A lot of people were doubting he would continue the project, the creator comes in towards the end
New Thread This is the thread he created after the previous was one was closed. Starts off showing some nice screenshot comparisions and also tells about the program he uses among many things. It also shows that he is going to be making a Master Quest version of the game as well as Majora's Mask! WOW.

I just hope he actually finishes the project, like so many other related projects, most often times are abandoned because of the workload and/or legal issuse. I was able to find a few earlier playable demos of the LTP style, he has two links on those forums to the EARLY demos that just show the basic gameplay but none seem to work right now. Also, he has sent further along demos to people on those forums to play thorough and test. If only we had access to these demos!!

And an interesting article that goes in with the general topic of remaking old games with new graphics or new games with 2D Graphics check THIS out.

I think Nintendo and other companies could take a nod from Valve who actually is SUPPORTING codename:gordon, an old school take on Half Life in Metal Slug style and having it available via download through Steam. I've heard that the Wii's Virtual Console will have new independently developed games. Just think if you could be downloading and playing Ocarina of Time 2D and playing it with the classic controller! Wow i'm about to soil myself

I think after reading that the leader of this Metroid Prime 2D project is only 15, i have to give him some sort of credit!! And now that i look at the newer screenshots, the final product IS resembling Super Metroid A LOT. That demo must have been a very early version.
