elfen lied is a good example of that, the main theme is so hauntingly beautiful and is used in the sadder parts of the anime. It just gets to the point where you hear the bells tolling out in the intro and find yourself tensing, gagging up even before the horrible thing happens. You just sit there silently powerless as the horror slowly comes
