Hey folks, not posted here in a while. Just letting you know that the Number One scottish guy is still alive and well.

Bored as like and Im struggling to get my lip piercing back in, ****ing bar wont connect to the ring. Oh and I have less than a month to learn 6 songs since my bassist has been thrown out of my band and I must now do Vox and Bass.

Anyway, im back.

Do you think a country like Turkey, which openly hinders the freedom of speech and still takes many rights from their women, should be let into the EU?

I do not know much about the Turkish economy, however, what I do know is that their population is very large which places a greater burden on budget allocation. Turkish farmers, like those other smaller European countries who recently joined are technologically behind the the larger EU countries (France, Germany and the UK) which means the terrible CAP will continue and spending may even go up to bring these new farmers in-line with what the EU sees as the standard for all. If so many European countries weren't so socialist and bowed down to the farmers who drive their tractors around city centres when they hear of the CAP going against their favour such an economically unsound policy would still not be in place. I know there has been some reform on the policy but the current workings are still horrendous. Back in 2000 it was estimated the CAP budget was 50% or more of the entire EU budget and how many people in the EU did it help? Around 5%. At the same time keeping food prices high and harming foreign farmers who can supply cheaply.

About Turkey?
Meh...it's less bad there than the media let's you believe. But still I don't want them to join the EU. Not out of racistic means, but because of their islamic background. "Hey that's a racistic comment". Not really, Europe consists pretty much entirely of Christian countries. Allthough I'm not religious myself I still prefer the christian "morals" in Europe.
A new country like Turkey which got Islamic morals wouldn't mix on a lot of terms with Europe. This could lead to a lot of crap, which I don't want ^^;

Well doubts arise because of the human rights abuse that goes on in Turkey and the political corruption. I'm not saying there is no corruption in any other country, it just seems to be more blatant in Turkey. If Turkey does join the EU then a good thing is that Turkey will have to change a few aspects of the country to be in accordance with the EU regulations (EDIT: state treatment of individuals is what I'm referring to as a better than that in Turkey). Still, Turkey won't be joining until 2007 I'll have to see how they change both socially and economically.

I don't think Turkey should join. Fact is they're an Islamic country, y'know, about as European as baseball. But then again.......what defines Europeans? An unusual capacity for alcohol (or is that only Scotland?), having cultures that are centuries old.......hell, i've confused myself, why shouldn't Turkey join? The more the merrier! I think :/

Winter: Ever been to France? French workers are 'en grève' all the time. Wonderful country that. I don't get how their economy survives. Not in the long run. Obviously, due to massive unemployment, our trade unions follow the same pattern as their British counterparts. It's all about job creation and securing nowadays, simply because most people are satisfied with having jobs to go to. Well ok, I lied. Thousands of Swedes do nothing but play videogames all day, relying on the system to provide for them. Healthy? No. And yet it's insanely difficult to find a job. A first tiresome step towards a more healthy economy, would be to lower our taxes. Tadaa! (Ok, this is only one perspective of this whole thing. I'm quite aware of that. ) Then companies would be given a fair chance to invest and hire new employees, and our beloved welfare state would have to go through some changes, such as looking for additional sources of financing. Oh, the horror! But seriously, why should five workers support 30? Where's the logic in that? As it is now we're too slow to invest, and so the 'wage-price spiral' never becomes an issue. No, without further stimulation, the Swedish economy will stagnate. For real. I'm even in favour of higher inflation. HAHA.

No, I don't want Turkey to join. But I hear they'll have to follow custom made rules. Otherwise we'd have our hands full with mass immigration. The joy!

Shiva: Do you believe there is such a thing as a European identity? Do we identify ourselves with our fellow Europeans more than with other people, say Americans? Do we share cutural values etc?

I've been to France a few times. In fact, my 'farmers driving tractor in city centres' reference was said with France in mind but France isn't the only state-intervention ridden country in Europe so I altered what I wrote.

The way I believe the French economy survives is through the multiplier effect. It is where the government "injects" money into the economy through public spending and this money increase demand which creates jobs and with more jobs people consume more, which in turn raises demand and the whole thing cycles round again. The value of the multiplier depends on how much 'leakage' there is, i.e. taxes, foreign imports, saving and the like. It also depends on the marginal propensity to consume. (Sorry to patronize you if you already know this, but other people here may not). Due to the high taxes required to support the welfare spending of the French government I shouldn't think any multiplier has a value larger than two. Of course, large government spending has to be paid for and high taxes would hinder the effect of the multiplier. Perhaps the nation is so used to the status quo the workers are prepared to earn money which the government then taxes a substantial portion of away. I'm not sure.

Does France run a trade surplus or deficit? I don't actually know this one.

I don't acknowledge such as thing as involutary unemployment. There is only voluntary employment, which means the market will stablize itself at full employment. By 'full' I mean the natural rate of employment. And what is the natural rate? This natural rate alters depending on the wage level. Forget about this. I like what I've typed here so it is going to stay, although it has nothing to do with what I've just said and what I'm about to say.

Britain has one of the lowest unemployment rates in Europe, according to the ILO it is only 4.7%. However, the numbers of unemployed people have been going up steadily the past six months.

Investment does not affect the wage price spiral. Lack of investment in capital can signify a lack on demand in consumer goods.

So, I take it the minimum wage is too high in Sweden? I think the minimum wage should be abolished. That way the labour market can find its own wage rate, rather than being distorted and actually creating unemployment. (Refer back to the natural rate of unemployment above.)

Economic stagnation won't necessarily be helped with high inflation. What is known as 'stagflation' in Britain during the 1970s confused a lot of people. Unemployment and inflation were rising at the same time, which shouldn't have happened. To cure economic stagflation you need to pursue supply side measures and in this way you also keep inflation under control. Another way to control inflation is through monetary policy, rather than fiscal methods. I believe as long as the money supply is controlled, inflation will be kept under control. Why? The price level is directly linked to the quantity of money.

Oh, and all currencies in the world should be floating currencies. On top of that governments around the world should not feel a need to hold reserves and try to manipulate their currency. It certainly isn't sustainable along with a few other problems it poses. It'll also rid the need of government's complaining about trade deficits. If your currency is allowed to float then any surplus or deficit is quickly eliminated. Then again, I'm sure most companies know that. They're just too worried by the "instability" that a floating currency may cause them. Oh well.

My mental maths ability has certainly slackened this Summer. When I got my AS results and had to add up my marks it took be an unacceptable length of time. When I have a calculator to do sums like "117 + 85" I become rusty without the practise. No matter. I think I'll just re-read the notes I made towards the end of the Summer term and I'll be engaged for learning new things.

Anyways, Ive never gotten so drunk that i couldnt remember it the next morning. Thats doesnt mean I havent gotten drunk shitless but I just cant lose my memory of the afore night like that I guess. I rule!!!
