...but it DOES bring back all the good old memories from FFVI and FFT and just RPGs in general from the 2D era. Square-Enix worked really, really hard on FFXII. I'm completely wrapped up in this title. It gives me warm fuzzies, and I'm not even a quarter through it yet.

Ah, so that's the deal with Oblivion. I MIGHT buy it sometime..i mean i'm certain that it's a good game but i'm kinda undecided as of now. My friend told me a lot of the same reasons..i've still been meaning to atleast try the game at his house sometime. I also saw 2k2 took over this game..what happened with Bethseda?

I have to agree with you on FF XII Loco..i really haven't felt this strongly about a Final Fantasy title since i played VI. It shows even an avid old schooler can break a tradition when a game this good comes out. To me this game is better than any of the PS or PS2 final fantasies though i'm sure many people would disagree with me. It's hard for me even trying to compare XII to the last two PS2 FF installments. Not that they aren't good in their own way, but this game is just on a whole different level for me. I can certainly see why it took so long to make :D

Heh, funny thing, I was talking with my GameStop co-workers (it's funny, I have two distinctly different sets of co-workers now) on Wednesday night about... well, the conversation covered everything, but at one point Oblivion came up. It was compared to Morrowind, and the basic question was "why isn't Oblivion as good?" I didn't know this until they told me, but 2KGames DID buy out Bethesda, just as they did Firaxis. Sad, I know. It's a shame that people would give up their companies for money. Bethesda is technically still an "independent" team of sorts, working entirely under 2KGames... but it just doesn't feel the same any more, you know?

Don't get me wrong, I've seen Oblivion, and it's very pretty. It's just not as diverse and expansive as Morrowind. *shrug* Eh, all the same.

I reckon that Australia wont be seein any of this FFXII until later in the Month / Some time next damn year.. which is a real pain you know? It would be a healthy distraction from FFXI I'm sure but its the principle in which - all games should be released world-wide at the same damn time >_<! grah. But that being said I havent even had a decent look at KH2 and it's been out for a month and a bit now.. hell, even a friend on FFXI by the name of Troopa, she said she has already beaten it 2 times..

Good questions..i like, i like.

Anywayz back to your FF V question. For me, it'd be a tough choice, but in the end i've always been a hardcore Samurai fan. Whether it be in FF V or FF Tactics, i've always loved the samurais. Why? For one they are very strong warriors, but in comparison with say the knight, they have a lot more useful abilities. While it is pretty cheap, who can't say they have used money toss for hard boss battles? :D *cough*cough* getting Odin..and Bahamut. My ultimate warrior in both job games is what i call the ultimate far east warrior, a mix between a ninja and a samurai. I like picking up the two weapons ability and using it on the samurai, either that or two handed. Plus sword grab can be a real life saver as well.

I think a second contender could be the sorceror. A knight/sorceror combo can very deadly. Also the monk at the beginning of the game was really helpful but as the game progressed turned to crap for me.

Here was my ultimate team setup at the end of the game.
Bartz - Time Mage/Knight Farris- Samurai/Ninja Reina - Black Mage/White Mage Krile - Summoner/Hunter

1. I collected then all, with Locke being the last to join me.
2. Kefka is Delightfully insane, because he is the only bad guy to successfully destroy the world and then rule it. His betrayal of Emperor Gyshal, was a classic moment too.
3. I believe the Paladin shield is obtained by getting the cursed shield and wearing it for 255 battles, the cursed shield is found at the weapon shop in Narshe.
4. 1988, one year after I was born
5. Uh, Tanooki suit is that the raccoon suit or whatever that allows you to nearly fly and stuff.
6. Fighter, Black Belt, Theif, Red Mage, Black Mage, White Mage. Evolutions: Knight, Master, Ninja, Red Wizard, Black Wizard, White Wizard.
7. Samuri and GP Toss, most powerful move in the game, saved me against many bosses I found too hard. The girls, it's funny seeing them in a samuri costume.

Favourite FFV job? Oh wow, that's a tough one. I'm going to exclude mime because, although I find a 4 mime party absolutely deadly, it's just boring to have everyone the same, and one on thier own isn't as effective, or so I've found. So my favourite would probably be...Sorceror actually. Because of the 2 slot system, I find them fairly ineffective later in the game compared to alternatives, but I thought they were really cool. Other than that I'd have to say Monk simply due to their versitility.

That said, ironically enough, I'm doing 0 old skool gaming. Mind you, adventure games are an old skool genre. I've been playing 'Dreamfall: The Longest Jounrey' and it has been wonderful. It's rare to see an adventure game in this day and age. The story is wonderful and, forgive me for this, the graphics are quite a sight. The only issue I have with it is that it's really easy. I haven't run into anything challanging really...at all. That and I hear it's fairly short, like 15 hours or so short, which is annoying. But the story is just wonderful and I definately recommend it to any fans of old skool adventure. And it isn't published by 2K Games. =)

Sorry if this is a little off topic, but yeah i miss the classic adventure games of old. Dreamfall is the sequel to the Longest Journey isn't it? I played the original very briefly at a friend's house and loved it, though never got the game myself. If i can find a copy I'd love to play it and maybe then get around to the sequel as well. Hey, and that's good it's not published by 2k games. :D

After finishing FF XII, i plan on taking a slight rpg break and playing some adventure games. Okami and Shadow of The Collossus (wow i killed that spelling) are on the top of my list right now.

Close... so close on the Tanooki suit. It's the one that makes you look like a Raccoon but allows you to turn to stone; however, you CAN fly with it. Most people call it the statue suit. Raccoon Mario is the suit acquired by grabbing a Super Leaf. Why a leaf? I dunno.

If you didn't notice, I already added you to the member list, but I'd like to see what kinds of things that Dawezy has to ask you all the same.



Now, to answer my own question from earlier.

Samurai is a great one, yes, but I always was rather fond of the Berserker. There's just something about the allure of raw power that draws me toward it. It may not have been as useful as some of the other jobs, but it was certainly great at pounding the shit out of things. Plus, Axes are sexy.

Geomancers were probably more useful in FFT than in FFV, but all the same, that's another job that I was always oddly fond of. Geomancer was good for finding traps and reaching otherwise painful places (walking on lava?), but wasn't all that great in battle.

But the TRUE favorite? Lancer. It speaks for itself.

I honestly don't have any preference as to which character does which job. I like to mix things up, but I do prefer to have one Lancer and one Berserker in my party toward the end of the game. I always swap the jobs amongst the characters.



By the way, setzertrancer, we usually include a "currently playing" list from time to time. It was required in posts for a while, but we kinda... stopped caring. Obviously in discussions like this, there's no need to include one every time you post if nothing has changed within the past five minutes or five hours, or whatever the time difference may be.

Yes, indeed it is. I haven't actually played the first one. My dad randomly bought this on one of his "I'll eventually play it and it was cheap" sprees and I was really itching for something with a fantastical story, so I gave it a try. Luckily, you don't need to know that much from the The Longest Journey to understand this one. It makes me want to actually finish Siberia though.

Oh man..you are right about the Beserker, how could i forget? They truely are pure killing machines. While they certainly lack in versatility, they make up for in raw killing power. Speaking of beserkers, Baasch is kinda my beserker type in FF XII, a simple strategy i use once if i am unable to use quickenings is to use a bacchus wine and cast haste on Baasch and watch him completely total any enemy/boss, he's such a tank. Vaan and Ashe simply are there to heal him and get in the occasinal attack.

Geomancer i did actually use a lot at the end of the game for all the parts with traps but yea in battle i thought they were completely useless. I mean sure they don't use MP to cast spells, but god their spells sucked horribly.

Lancer though? I don't know..as much as i'm a big fan of lancers in general (cmon kain is probably my all time fav ff character, well besides general leo of course. :D), i didn't find them as useful as the other warrior classes in FF V (or Tactics for that matter). As much as the jump ability is great, they really didn't have much else going on in terms of abilities.

Weapons wise, lances are very powerful (especially the Holy Lance) but i wish there was more..uh versatility in terms of mixing with other warrior classes (ie using two handed, sword magic,etc). I felt like with all the other warrior classes, you could mix and match things but the lancer was kinda the stand alone guy. Correct me if i'm wrong, but you can't use two lances at once either can you? Also, with the knights and samurais, i feel like they could take the damage but with the lancer jumping all the time, it left my weak mages and summoners to take the brute of the enemy attacks. Though i guess that could be a kind of survival tactic, if anyone has seen the video i posted (in the FF IV game room) of the extremely low level party in FF IV and Kain solely beating the main guy of the game by himself, you'll know what i mean.

Yeah i thought Monk was great at the begining of the game and it was probably one of my most used jobs. As i got to the end though, and characters were constantly getting better weapon and armor upgrades (and more importantly the legendary weapons or whatever they are called) it's power seemed to get less and less. Though it certainly had some good abilities

Ah..ok. I' gonna have to give it a try. I don't know what it is, but i've never been able to get into PC games as much lately. Way back when on my old computer with windows 3.1 i loved playing all the old point and click adventure games. Siberia is just like that too, isnt it? God i'd love to play one of those again soon. • Everybody calls everyone "Chum" in Shadowrun, which is quite funny because it rhymes with the game title. Lawl
• Correct, tickets to a Gwar (wtf name is that) concert get scattered and you must find them.
• Yep!
• 9, its a Cat.
• Spot on, only 1 official game was released but thanks to censorship and the fact that there are MORE then 2 countries in the world.. Castlevania "Blood Lines" saw about 5 variations of gameplay.. ugh.
• In Contra Hard Corps, your characters could take 2 hits and die on the 3rd.. in Probotector (US version) you only take 1 hit and die. PLUS, the character lineup is somewhat edited. The main male/female lead are turned out to be a Gundam-esque outfit.
• THE GAME SPEED! gah, its so frustrating. French version is so damn fast you can barely gets moves in. Shame it never saw a release outside of Japan/France/Europe.
• You have to drop your Troops off and set them to "Capture" AI (wierd lookin orange icon) to take control of Outposts.. from there you move on to others and finally your enemys camp.. where-in you set your grunts into "Attack" Ai and murder stuff. Absolutely brilliant game for its time and I used to play the hell out of it against friends and kick their ass too. XD
• Almost - Jurassic Park, Rampage Edition and Lost World.
• SEGA version of Mortal Kombat was uncensored.
• You can punch in a code to reveal a topless girl in the starting screen, as opposed to "Dirty Dog's" mascot.. which is a dog (No shit? lmao).

Hey I just wanted to wish everyone a happy "week of the Wii!" It's going to be awsome. I am just about as excited as you can get. I am also pretty excited because twighlight princess comes out this week. I am just wondering if anyone else is getting either a Wii or a playstation and why or why not?

Final Fantasy XII (I was about half way through and my memory card died on me I lost about half of my life and all my saved games for the PS2, I now refer to November 2 as black Thursday)

I would if i could..wait much much is the Wii going to cost? My price range is no more than $300. Preferably..250 and below. :) Honestly, as much as im a hardcore gamer, 600 dollars is ridiculous. Thinking realisticly, i could think of a million better things to do with $600, if i even did have that much money to throw around.

Is TW princess coming out the same day for GC? If so, then i'm hoping to play it at my friend's house when it does. He has his copy for the gamecube reserved, and i'm plannin on getting in on that as soon as he gets the game.

Sucks to hear about FF XII! Same thing happened with Doughboy (fishie), he had his game erased way into the game. I hate it when that happens. I'm not somebody who can pick up a game that easily after getting so far into it. If that happened to my FF XII file now, i prob would stop playing it for months to a year. I've had it happen with a few old ps titles, including FF 7. That's what i get for getting the cheap third party memory cards! :P And don't even get me started on how many times my files on my snes carts have been erased.

Ha, i'm glad i didnt have to answer those Sega questions. I knew most of them..but i am also certainly a nintendo guy through and through. Though Shadowrun was for the SNES and the Genesis as well.

It's really tough to divulge in old school conversations with so much new crap coming out all of a sudden. Between FFXII, the PS3 launch, and the Wii launch, I wouldn't be opposed if the Cult temporarily moved into discussions of new-gen items. It's a lot of stuff all at once, and we're all wrapped up with everything, so I certainly can't blame you for wanting to talk about it.

Yeah i wouldn't be surprised either if next gen systems become the topic of discussion here. Speaking of which, do you get any discounts or anything working at a game shop? And on that same kind of note, are you planning on getting any of the new systems and is any one on the top of your list?

I'd say Wii is probably the top of mine simply because of it's price, its gameplay innovations, and because i've always been somewhat of a nintendo fanboy at heart despite taking a break from them a few years with not buying the gamecube.

I have one old school question that maybe somebody could help me with though...

i had a bit of an oldschool flashback today that i wish somebody could help me with. I was remembering my old friend who when everyone had nintendo and sega systems, he had (what i thought) was an atari of some kind. I remember playing Bonk's Adventure on it (a game i later played extensively on my gameboy), then i remember playing a two player game with him that i can't rememember the name..it was a two player platforming game from what i remember involved using umbrellas. Anyone have any leads? Anywayz with further research i found out that Bonk's Adventure was only on the Turbografx 16. So i got a list of all the turbografx 16 games on wikipedia and none of the titles looked familar. :confused: It confused me more because the turbografx 16 was white in appearance and though i could be wrong because this was prob like 10-15 years ago, his system was black..and to make things worse, there are 3 different Bonk games..damnit.

Then thinking of old fun platforming games i remembered playing non stop Altered Beast at my friend's house. Man whatever happened to the PS2 remake of that game?

The Wii, of course, but I won't be getting the first-gen. I'll probably wait until the stroke of the new year to pick mine up. Holiday pay from my jobs will certainly add up quickly, and then I'll have the money to spare, and most bugs should be out of new Wii consoles by that point in time.

As for my employee discount, I get 15% on ALL games (new or used), accessories (new or used), and used (but not new) consoles.

I also plan on getting an Xbox360 sometime in the spring, when the price for a new one should be under $300. Since I didn't own an Xbox, and the 360 is compatible with all of the games I would have wanted anyway, I figure I may as well get one. I'm not sure I want to pay for Live! access though. Hmm.

And, as mentioned in that PS3 countdown thread, I'll get one of those when it's under $300, even though that could take two or three years... or never.



As for your question, hmm... I don't know anything about a multiplayer game involving umbrellas... I've got no clue, my apologies.

I was just asking cause i'm really looking for a job right now. You work at Gamestop don't you? What's the difference between Gamestop and EB? There really aren't many gamestops really close to my area though there are quite a few EB games. Sounds like not a bad place to work, how do you like it there?

Yeah i am considering an xbox 360 sometime as well. Honestly i see myself getting a Wii and that before a PS3. There are a lot of xbox games i want to play through..notably morrowind, jade empire, fable, and kotor. I've played through a lot of morrowind and kotor at my friend's but i really want the games for myself. There are a handful of other games i'd like to play for the system as well, how could i forget NINJA GAIDEN? God that game is amazing..i love playing it at my friend's. Right now he is beating through it at the hardest difficulty..certainly no easy task. If i was getting the ps3 i'd love to play through the remake they are making for it.

Haha i'm with you on the PS3 thing too! I think sony has really messed up this time, i just wonder how sell the system is really going to sell. I mean what kind of gamers really have that much money to fork up for a system?

And yeah i finally figured it out..the name of the game was parasol stars. I should have noticed the word parasol right in the name. Makes it confusing just because it's a the sequel to a game called rainbow islands, and both have ports on several systems which makes it confusing. I didn't know how many variants there were on the turbografx 16, but i'm almost positive the game is parasol stars (which interestingly enough is part of the bubble bobble series)

I've already pre-ordered my Wii and I've nearly paid it off. But ot do so I had to leave myself flat broke for the last couple of months just to save up exacly what I needed, as I got $200 a month in allowance, yes I'm still living with my parents. But I'll be moving out soon, just wanna sqeeze money out of them for another month or 2 before getting a job.

I've never had an allowance before in my life. And I thought having friends who got $80 allowances was ridiculous. $200 a month? Wow. Just... wow.

In any case, that rocks about you having your Wii almost paid off. I'm working two jobs and even then I can't really afford to buy one right now, with my employee discount and everything. (I blame all of the good games that I keep buying.) Of course, as mentioned earlier, I don't plan on buying a Wii until just after the new year anyway, so it doesn't really make a difference to me.

Oh, when you get your Wii, make sure you get Excite Truck. It's the kind of racing game that even non-racers can enjoy. The steering is so sensitive, too. Quite challenging, in my opinion. Tons and tons of fun though.

Our Nintendo rep gave us a FULL version of the game for our display, rather than just a demo. One of our employees has almost beaten it. He wants to be the only person who can stand up and say "I've beaten the game before it was even released!" He's close. So very close. And he's running out of time, heh.

Hey we all gotta hear about FF III! I'm interested to hear about the DS version too! I've already been seeing commercials for it on TV. Also, i can't believe this but MTV is having a gamer's week, this is hilarious having people interviewed about their fav old school games! The one professional said contra, not a bad choice i must say.

I have to say i live with the parents too but definitely no allowance (atleast in a long time). Until a few months ago I have been working either part time or full time since i was 16. My first semester of college i was working two part time jobs for over 40 hours a week while taking 16 credits. Needless to say things are different now, for one i'm taking next semester off and i haven't had a job since july or so? It's nice from going to busy with no time for anything to..all the free time in the world like i have now.

My question to people is (going with the next gen topic), is what upcoming next gen titles (or current, whether it be xbox360, wii, or ps3) are you most looking forward to playing? (besides Zelda: TW princess of course :) )

Honestly,if i was getting a Wii soon, one of the first games i might buy is the new Super Monkey Ball game. Those games have always been hella fun and addicting if you ask me, and i can only imagine how it would be using the wii remote.

Other than that..keeping with the Wii, Super Mario Galaxies of course, the new Sonic title, Fire Emblem, and Harvest Moon Heroes.

PS3 wise, i'm extremely pumped about Virtua Tennis 3. I've been a big tennis player my entire life (im too lazy for real sports), and i completed pwned in Virtua Tennis and Tennis 2k2 for dreamcast. I played both hardcore, Tennis 2k2 doing the create a player thing, maxing out all my stats and being number 1 in the world. I have yet to meet somebody who can beat me in that game. I would be playing top spin too but no xbox, and table tennis too if i had a xbox360. My friend has a 360 though and we play that all the time.

Other than that..on PS3, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, White Knight Story (i love Level 5), and Hot Shots Golf 5.

on xbox 360, fable 2, mass effect, assassin's creed (could have said it for PS3 too), banjo kazooie 3, contra, rainbow six: las vegas, and last but not least the much delayed and platforming jumping title, Too Human (been following this game since the beginning, what like 10 years ago)

another question is: does anyone know what happened to the remake of old school classic altered beast that i thought sega was planning for the ps2?

Hmm. Well, as far as next-gen titles go, you MUST get Excite Truck. Even if you're not a fan of racing games, Excite Truck is loads of fun and actually quite difficult at times. The steering is so sensitive, it's insane. (We've got the full game in our Wii at the store, so we've all played it a ton.)

Other games for the Wii that look to be interesting are Trauma Center: Second opinion, and more or less everything else you listed in your post. I'm trying to keep my hype level low for the Wii, especially since I won't be picking one up until 2007 (I feel like I keep saying that... do I?).

If I get an Xbox360, the first thing I'll get my hands on is Gears of War. The game looks (and plays) amazing(ly). Halo 3 would be soon to follow.

I'm trying not to think about the PS3, to be honest. Well, let me rephrase that. I'm thinking about all the ways Sony is fucking up the PS3 project, so I'm trying not to think about the potentially good games for the system.


As for your question regarding the Sega Classics... well, I know they've got a couple of them already. One of the general Sega Classics and a second strictly of the Genesis Classics. If there was something else new due to come out, I didn't hear about it.



And finally... FFIII. I'm leaving my house the moment I'm done with this post to pick it up. And possibly Elite Beat Agents. That game's insanely fun.

Yeah, I pondered over Elite Beat Agents for a while, and then I said "fuckit" (literally) and grabbed FFV instead. Just got a new shipment in today and everything. It's not like I haven't played FFV on the PSX and emulators alike, but I figured it's been a LONG time since I've played, and I've only beaten it twice, so why not get it for the GBA? So yeah... my NDS is sitting next to me with FFIII plugged into the DS slot and FFV plugged into the GBA slot.

Holy shit, this is going to rock.
