Weird pet

We just adopted a pig.



We named her Janeway, and she's in the living room in her huge crate oinking and tearing up newspaper. She's cool, even if she's not quite warmed up to us yet. It's only day three, but she's progressed to eating apple pieces from our hands and Caleb says that she let him rub her tummy this morning (which is hugely unfair because I get home first in the afternoons, so I've been the one cleaning up her poops but okay, Janeway, I see how it is).

Our spitz Gatsby (my dog) is interested and stares at her while wagging his tail and making weird whiney noises. Janeway oinks and also wags her tail.
Our chihuahua Q*Bert (Caleb's dog) thinks this pig is some bullshit (surprise).

I let Gatsby and Janeway touch noses today. That was cute.


Anyway, as we're adjusting to this new creature in the house, I started wondering about everyone else's experience with unusual pets (looking at you, Australia). Also I'm all of a sudden way less busy (yay) and thought I'd try being active here again.

What's the weirdest animal you've ever kept as a pet? And if you haven't had a very weird pet, what's the weirdest thing your pet has ever done?

I could write for pages about Gatsby. I'll just let you guys get started instead.

Yeah we have pet Kangaroo's in Australia. We often use them to ride down to the local milkbar (we call them bushbar's). Its safer to use the kangaroo when travelling this way as we avoid running over any hidden echidna's or brown snakes (most venomous snake in the world) which are also often someone elses pet.

At some point, after I eventually marry my current gf (give it another year or so), we plan on getting a badass puppy. Probably a black lab/ husky mix. Not totally crazy, but what can you expect from the general NYC region.

And if you haven't had a very weird pet, what's the weirdest thing your pet has ever done?

I've always thought it strange how well behaved my baby is whenever I groom and bathe him. He always stays still and lifts his paws or back legs up when I reach to wash under his belly or lower area. And when I kiss him on his nose while hes drenched in the bathtub he always licks back >< A lil background, my baby is a stray. I saw him running through a very busy intersection on my way to work n stopped my car in all the traffic whilst giving the finger to all the cars beeping at me trying to lure him into my boot. I dont kno who his former owners were, wat they like nor do I give a s**t cause if i didnt pick him up he woulda been run over. As much as I like to take all the credit (mayb sum) its just in his beautiful nature, so he's my weirdly focused, extremely well behaved blonde Samoyed now. I type this as he lays his head on my foot<3

When I read this, I was thinking that it sounds like your dog is wanting some pork for dinner. I mean, now that he knows where pork comes from.

What's the weirdest animal you've ever kept as a pet? And if you haven't had a very weird pet, what's the weirdest thing your pet has ever done?

I had a pet steer. His name was T-Bone. Which is appropriate, since a portion of him eventually became a T-Bone. I cared for him as much as any other pet I have had, and even stayed with him on the way to the farm where my parents were having him...you know. The weirdest thing that happened while I had him was when he jumped the fence and started running around our little neighborhood. Then my next door neighbor, who was also my science teacher at the time, helped us get him back to his enclosure.

Other than that, my cats at the time, U and Omega, would always climb the tree next to the house and use it to jump onto the roof. Then they wouldn't be able to get back down. They would cry and cry, because they were to scared to climb back down. So I would have to climb onto the roof and bring them down. And it wouldn't be fifteen minutes before they were back up there again.

She's like a goddamn baby, she'll start squealing and the first couple times you're like "oh no what is wrong I'll go see" and then she's just sitting there looking at you and nothing is wrong, she just wants more snacks.

We tried putting a harness and leash on her and giving her a little walk outside, but she was OUTTA CONTROL. Flailing around (it defied the laws of physics, I don't know how she got so much air) and screaming. We were almost certain that the neighborhood vegetarians were about to accidentally kill a pig on the front lawn. So.... the pig walks will have to wait.

I had an iguana when I was younger. My brother and I went halvsies on it and he wound up jacking it outright later on. His wife then got pregnant with my oldest niece, and with my brother being gone in the truck all the time, stopped cleaning its cage out of fear of salmonella poisoning (which is lol cuz she was smoking pot and weed and God knows what else). It died.

My awesome boyfriend bought me a boxer puppy. And she's hilarious. She gives me something to do and focus on. The only weird thing I can think of is how she goes nuts if she smells fresh lime or whiskey. She barks and growls and jumps around and rubs her face all over the floor.

I had a Manx cat, one of the domestic cats without a tail that stem from a genetic mutation from the Isle of Man. They're really expensive to buy here (and very uncommon... he's the only one I've ever seen), but we got him because he kept running away from the house of the breeder, to our place. So she just let us have him.

He actually died about three weeks ago, at the age of 16. He may have had some kind of cancer. Feels like a part of my childhood I'll never see again

Oh noo. My condolences, Alpha. 16 is an excellent age for a kitty. I'm glad he had a long life with people he liked.

I was at school and my mom was at work (dad gone in the truck). He came over and took it. Story of life in my family. If he's nearby and you turn your back, he -will- find something to take and a way to take it.

I have a Black fuzzy cat that actually uses the toilet. It's kind of creepy hearing tinkling coming from a dark bathroom...

No out of the ordinary pets here either, but we do have four quarter horses, two cats, (four if you consider the neighbors that never seem to go home) 1 rooster, and five hens. (again it's four hens, but we have one from the house next door that comes here to roost. Then runs away when we let them out of the coup in the morning)
