    Sitting Posture

I just tried sitting up straight in my comp chair for 5 minutes because preventing back problems in the future is the new rad thing to do. My neck and shoulders hurt like hell. It's super uncomfortable. I'm probably just not used to it, but I didn't think it'd be this bad. Usually I'm slouched over and sitting cross-legged on the chair with my neck lowered. It's like I'm meditating with my eyes open and I often achieve nirvana like this.

How does everyone sit? Do you normally sit up straight? If not, is it really uncomfortable to do so?

    Re: Sitting Posture

I tend to slouch my back a lot when I sit, and for my legs I always have them crossed either knee over knee or ankle over ankle. My lower back starts to hurt and my legs become tired if my feet are flat on the ground, so the majority of the time it's ankle over ankle.

I don't mind slouching when I sit, it's when I stand that it bugs me. I have to make myself stand up straight when I walk otherwise I end up looking like an awkward ostridge or Quasimoto.

    Not cute.

I was thinking that since I'm artificially creating it, I'll create it with rocket fuel instead of blood, and thus it will be able to fly, using the dolphin's dorsal fins as wings. And from the air, it will look down upon us all and protect us against sharks, and search for bananas.

    Re: Sitting Posture

I herniated a disc in my back a few years ago, and ever since then, I've taught myself not to slouch, because slouching has proved to cause pain and discomfort in my back, and tingling and numbness in my legs. Though even if I were to slouch, I probably wouldn't have these problem anymore, but I don't want to risk causing more back problems, because I would rather put a gun in my mouth and blow my ****ing brains out then have to go to physical therapy again.

Sitting up straight at first was extremely uncomfortable. I was actually in more pain sitting up straight then I was with a herniated disc. I got used to it after a while, though, so it doesn't hurt anymore. It just feels like sitting now, which is extremely disappointing, because I kind of figured that sitting up straight would feel like something cooler than sitting. I kind of used to fantasize that sitting up straight would feel like swimming seven miles below the surface of the ocean on the back of a manatee. It doesn't.

    Re: Sitting Posture

I had scoliosis ten years ago, so like Clint, I had to train myself to sit up straight. Not only does sitting up straight promote good posture, it makes more attentive.

I only tend to slouch if I am telling someone a secret. It kind of looks awkward if you are sitting all proper while you are trying to tell someone something in confidence.

    Re: Sitting Posture

I used to slouch over while sitting/playing videogames but I've kinda broke that habit the last couple of years. I sit at a pretty straight almost rigid angle while on the computer/xbox, so I can be attentive and save my back!! I also sit a fair ways back from the monitor/screen as well, I like to be able to see the full screen and then have some peripheral vision of whats going around me, even when I'm fully attentive to the screen lol.

when I get lazy though and am just browsing on the web, I have a tendency to slouch up and put my chin on my hand, thats like my second (aka tired/ugh mood) form.

    Re: Sitting Posture

I tend to slide my ass as far forward in my chair as possible, so that my shoulders rest well below where the intended shoulder rest of my chair is located. My back has been completely ****ed for as long as i can remember and due to this it makes it really hard for me to sit in any kind of "normal" positions. Thus far having my legs fully extended, my ass just barely in the seat and the base of my neck resting where the bottom of my shoulder blades are intended to be (by design of the chair) is the most comfortable way I can sit without feeling the terrible unevenness of my upper back.

I am actually pretty intrigued by the amount of people here who sit down on a regular basis. I guess it's just something I never used to.

I used to always slouch over and after an hour or so, my back would start getting hurting. Now I sit up with my back vertical to the chair.

I try to sit up as straight as possible but I am waaaay to fidgety for that noise. I usually end up sitting cross-legged on the chair or dangling my legs and kicking like an 8 yr old since my feet almost never touch the ground completely. I'm very small-only 5'!

    Re: Sitting Posture

I tend to lean back or lean forward. I slouch a bit too, which I know isn't good for you, but sitting blot right is really uncomfortable in my opinion. And my back hasn't hurt yet from how I sit...

I do tend to sit up straight in restaurants though. *shrug*

    Re: Sitting Posture

It depends on what feels comfortable at the time. I try to stay as comfortable as possible. There's no point on straining the body. That being said, slouching can be rather comfortable, however lately I find that I'm sitting down a lot at work and slouching has been causing plenty-oh-problems. When I'm travelling on a train or subway, I try to keep my back straight. It keeps me awake so I don't miss my stop. Sitting straight can also get tiresome after sitting for 2 hours straight (I get so involved with what's going on at work, I don't even realize how long I've been sitting until I need to look at the time). Right now I'm kind of laying back with a pillow between me and a wall. This is comfortable, but I can already feel my back complaining. I started to have back problems a while back from carrying a tuba in a marching band. I've never been the same since. Ah well.
