    To be proud.

Just the other day I was going through some old stuff, two particular items caught my intention. I found my old man's medal that he earned while he was in the army. It was given to him by the president himself for defending his country, as to many other brave soldiers as well. I also found a framed recognition, a small token of appreciation from the local hospital, my father was donating blood couple of times per year, every year until he ended his soldier career. With that they were able to save multiple lives, he also helped the same hospital in their biggest time of need.

Going through all that I couldn't help myself but to feel proud of my father, he decided his life so we young ones could live in peace, I simply can't imagine what would happen of this country if it weren't for men like him.

Anyway, do any of you have a person in your life you're particularly proud of, keep in mind that it doesn't have to be for some huge or heroic reason.

My grandfather was a journalist, and editor for a paper called the Glossop Chronicle. He died from his diabetes when I was really young so I never really knew him. My grandma has since told me that before he died he donated almost all his money to Diabetes UK. My grandma then continued to give the money he left her, too.

My grandma's still donating money and doing what she can. Now if the hospitals would only fix her damned knees...

Anyway, yeah... I'm really proud of Grandma Summers.

I had an uncle who was one of John F. Kennedy's top secret service agents. He was with the president all throughout his two year presidency, except for the assassination in Texas, in which, he and all the regular secret service agents were conveniently called away to some bullshit assignment halfway across the country.

Another one of my uncles fought on the front lines in World War II. He was a tail gunner for the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division, and was involved in Operation Market Garden, the invasion of Normandy, and the Battle of the Bulge; the three major battles during WWII that the 82nd are most famously known for.

My big bro was in a band called The W's, which toured the country and parts of Europe, and earned a couple Christian Music awards, I think best new artist and single (for "The Devil is Bad." My brothe called it their "state the obvious" song.) They toured a lot with one of my favorite bands, FIF, and made good friends with some of them. Now kids get in touch with him just so they can find out if he has any contact information for the lead singer, ha. I like hearing his stories about touring and stuff, and what people were like; he met a lot of christian rock people, and some secular people as well. It was funny to hear some of his comments on the FIF documentary.

That's probably about the coolest person that I know personally. No one else has really done anything really amazing in my family. Some of my extended family went to war, but I don't really know them very well/haven't heard stories, really. Anyhoo...

My mum's family were really poor; they sometimes couldn't afford food, couldn't afford central heating, no one in the family had great educational background, etc. However, mum passed her 11+ and got into a grammar school, at a time when they were dominated by middle class students. She put up with prejudice-people wouldn't want her to be friends with their children because of her background. She went on to take her A Levels and go to a decent university, and came out of it with a degree in English and History. Her sisters all did well for themselves too. And now they're all working really hard, living pretty well. Mum's done her very best to provide for my brother and I so we don't have to struggle like she did, and I'm so proud of her for it.

My nan (my mum's mum) was friends with a white woman who had a child with a black man at a time when no one else would be.

I don't really know about the older generations in my family. They're either dead, or two far to go and visit.

I'm proud of my grandmother though. She made a lot of choices during WWII that kept her alive for me to be able to exist. Her area was being evacuated, and everyone was being taken to a college building to stay safe during the Blitz (you know, if everyone was in one place, it was unlikely someone would expose everyone with a light on). She didn't go though. She went to her brothers house, and the next morning she found out that the college had been wiped out with a bomb.

She's also the woman who raised me because mum couldn't. She got me and my brother up for school, fed us, clothed us, made sure we were in bed and good times, etc. She even took us on day trips to the seaside and such. Sure, we couldn't do anything big or playful with her, but it was nice to get out of the City.

I'm proud of my mother too. She tries her best to make sure that we're all well provided for, and works a lot. She's been through a lot with my grandmother, like having an over 60 year old woman for a mother when she was barely my age, and even being homeless for a while.

    Re: To be proud.

My mother is a respiratory therapist, it's not a high medical occupation such as Doctor, but she helps people in and out of this world. She helps people hang on to life and she has a million stories to tell. In many ways she's much more intelligent and competent than many of the doctors she works with. She's been doing this close to twenty-five years straight, along with homeschooling her youngest daughter and volunteering for anything. I'm very proud of her.

Conversely, my father is a Psychologist with a doctorates and has a million or so meaningless plaques on his wall, written one or two self-aggrandizing books and is a Kentucky Colonel. He has helped people...but only at their expense and he has made quite a lot of money from them.
