I was confused reading this but,I guess I should say thanks. ^-^

Does anybody know how large the quake was? I knew it was to be updated to 9.1, but what was the overall region of impact from the quake itself?
And if it was just a precursor, that freakin sucks.
I also heard that it was a partial meltdown and some chemical leakage.

Anyways, Maybe, not TRYING TO SOUND RUDE, it was kinda a good thing the quake if it couldn't been detected or stopped, happened in a place that had superior building codes and were use to tsunamis. Ehh, maybe not, but I think California would not have faired so well.
Can we please stop being a bait for people to reply to angrily? It will cause the thread to close.

Japan is faring well? The death toll could top 1,800 later today. A nuclear reactor exploded. In one port town alone, nearly 10,000 people are reported missing. That sounds fairly ominous to me.

A partial meltdown, yes. Some chemical leakage, no. Heavy chemical leakage is more like it. The amount of radiation released slightly exceeds the dose people can safely receive in a year.

Japan is definitely not faring well.

No one knows the day or the hour of the LORD JESUS' return; however the year is able to be grasped judging by the signs of the times and such. Though there has been quite a bit of global earthquakes in recent years none have been much to fret over or be concerned with. The Bible does stat that when the Jews gain back their land and Jerusalem is rebuilt that that generation will not pass away before the coming of the LORD JESUS CHRIST. Considering that the Jews got their land back in 1948 and someone was born on that exact day or day before, if humans live 74-130 years at max these days than the LORD may come back in either 2020 or so to about the year 2078 give or take a decade or so from each spectrum.

In any case about the Radioactive leak in Japan; there is a possible threat of nuclear pollution blowing from Japans coast across the pacific and gaining foothold on the west coast of the USA here in California. The situation is being closely monitored and officials are keeping close contact with Japan as they are with us obviously.

Tsunami hits the city of Kamaishi

    Pretty chilling video, imo.

Btw, the Richter scale is algorithmic. The Sendai quake was at least 1,000 times more powerful than the Haiti quake.

I keep hearing about this but I haven't seen it anywhere, has anyone heard about the missing shinkansen? Might even be two of them, I'm not sure.

And I do have a friend who lives in Japan, not sure which region. I haven't heard from him yet. =/

I've been watching this all over the news. I like how people didn't say much when there was an earthquake in New Zealand, but when Japan gets hit by an oceanic earthquake everyone freaks out and starts losing their minds.

Where's the love for the Kiwis? Depending on the geophysics, I wonder if they are related. I also got reminded of something else that was kinda spooky:

    Re: Poor Japan <(ToT)>

Hey man, we had plenty of love!

Although there is talk of pretty much all international support (apart from Australia's) drying up because of the disaster.

I'm not about to rate which is worse, but please don't forget about Christchurch people!

In terms of the geophysics -- no they are not related.

Well they are in the sense that the two systems are dominated by the subduction of the Pacific Plate, but they are moving in different ways. In the case of NZ, it isn't actually subduction at Christchurch. The plate boundary at that point (but not the rest of the country) is strike-slip. That is why there are Alps in the region. The city of Christchurch itself is at a particulary complex system of faults that are only peripherally related to the plate boundary. The true danger there comes from the fact that millions of years of alluvial gravels had hidden many of the fault lines. The two 6+ earthquakes in the region occurred on separate faults -- both of which were unknown.

I can't explain Japan's system in great detail, but it is basic subduction, complicated by the presence of a third tectonic plate. In subduction the plates rarely move smoothly, but in jolting movements that release the energy in short bursts. They are generally responsible for both the most powerful and most frequent earthquakes. That's pretty much what happened, so it's not at all unexpected.

    I can't either.
Japans Earthquake registered a 9.1, 4th largest quake ever.
Of course it isn't a good thing about New zealand, but, the japan earthquake involved more.

Quakes in Japan, New Zealand: Both deadly, but in different ways | L.A. NOW | Los Angeles Times

Anyways, not to be rude, but from my understanding, Japan is more... I don't know how to say it, popular than New zealand, which I'm thinking garnered more attention.

To be honest, I didn't know an earthquake happened in New Zealand till I heard the Japanese earthquake.

You ever hear of Port au Prince, or Indonesia? They had some horrific earthquakes too.

Pull your head out of your ass before you post in this thread again. You're sounding more and more ignorant as you go, and I'm really trying to help you save face and NOT look like an assclown.

Both earthquakes were terribly devastating, but unfortunately in some people's minds, Japan takes precedence because people have some kind of bizarre obsession with it. On the Richter scale, perhaps they can be compared, but not in terms of destruction or how they've affected people in those areas. The landscapes, populations, architecture and technology are quite different.

One thing about the Japanese people though that is so odd; throughout the earthquake and in the evacuation process, people still remained orderly, obeying traffic laws and stopping at stop signs. Hats off to them for keeping their cool under such circumstances. I can't say that I would.

I said, which I didn't mean disrespect, Japan MAY have had more popularity, or maybe it was stronger or has more impact than the New zealand one.
Just because I don't usually watch the news doesn't mean I am "ignorant."

And the only reason why I found about the japanese one, is as I said, I am planning to move there. Other than that, maybe the weather channel, but I probably would have NEVER known it happened, as I am unaware, or uninterested in worldly events.

Ignorant doesn't mean stupid, it means without knowledge.

I'm really getting tired of the bitching in this thread. Revert to normal conversation, or this gets closed and we can start over in a more civilized manner.
