I might sound weird being american and all, and while I don't usually direct death upon anybody, I kinda wish it was somewhere else. Yea they are used to it but... Anyways, what do you think about it?

8.9 Earthquake 80 miles NE off of Sendai, Japan.

In the morning, I might say the same for Hawaii, tho I for some reason, respect japan more than america.

ANYWAY. Yeah, shit sucks for Japan. I've been watching CNN make a spectacle of it for a little while now. Finally had to mute it.

The earthquake is OK. The largest they have ever recorded in Japan, and they began record keeping 140 years ago. Their cities are mostly in river valleys, which would theoretically increase risk. However, Japan, simply, is ****ing used to this. Living in the so-called "Shaky Isles" myself, I am infinitely jealous of their building codes. I watched footage of people continue working as the earthquake occurred.

What's super worrying is the consequent tsunami. It has devastated parts of Japan, and there are warnings for basically anywhere in the Southeast and Southwest Pacific. Just what Australia and NZ needed, let alone anywhere else, especially Pacific atolls that could pretty much be ****ed by anything approaching a metre.

Not sure how long we have until it hits, just watching the news and hoping.

Not nice. Hmm, I wonder the amount of casualties and if Japan will be the most direct.

Me and mum were discussing how calm everyone seemed to be on the news. Sure, they looked worried, but there wasn't a whole lot of panic. Apparently, they found out it was going to happen an hour before it did, and managed to evacuate a large, worse hit area in time. Other countries would go into a raging panic, and buy up all the supplies at the local supermarket. I think it's amazing that they've obviously learned a lot from the one in 1995, where I think six thousand people were killed.

I heard that only one person had died this morning when I woke up, and now it's at an estimate of thirty-two... it's horrible.

It's just about waiting and seeing what's going to happen next. =(

I'm still a bit shocked, but it's pretty far away from me, so... I can't really be that sad about it. Though I've read some journals of friends who said that they know people over there. It's sad to read how they don't know if their friends are still alive... :/

Nevertheless, I think no one will talk about it anymore in a few weeks. Life goes on.

And basically, what Alpha said. Japan is prepared for stuff like this. The death toll is surprisingly low, especially when taken into account the population density of the country, and the biggest setbacks will be structural damage.

Japan is a very resilient country, and by April I'm sure most people will have forgotten all about the earthquake.

Any person who has said that clearly has no knowledge or understanding of Japanese culture, so if/when you decide to visit, prepare to have your dreams crushed and be placed under a coma of culture shock.

Just in case anyone wants to see things from Japan's perspective. It's essentially an English broadcast of NHK programming. As of now it's just a multilingual listing of areas affected, but on the hour they do news updates. Beats CNN.

Also, Odin, please don't tell me you want to go there expecting it to be like an anime drama. Japan is not the otaku's dream land anime sagas would make you believe it is.

This thread already made me mad, and as soon as I heard about the tsunami on the radio today, I KNEW someone would make this thread... just because it's Japan.

Hats off to you Odin. You assclown. That's like saying, "Well, I don't like the Aussies because they have funny accents, and I don't like kangaroos. I wish 9/11 would've happened over there."

It's both tragic and lucky that Japan was hit. Tragic because this will undoubtedly affect tons of people, especially those who have died and their families. Lives will be changed forever because of this. It's also lucky in a sense because Japan was so well prepared for it, and like Gemma said, had it been someplace else, without a good warning system or buildings engineered to withstand, it could be another Haiti or Indonesia situation; absolute pandemonium.

At the same time, Hawaii is also being hit, but for the most part, everyone has been moved to higher elevation, and it's likely that the ocean in the area will have risen by 2-3 feet in total, which means that there will be coastal flooding and probably beach erosion, along with whatever property damage has occurred. So, the people are alright there, but the landscape is iffy

Anyways, I hate Tsunamis, I try to forget about Tsunamis in japan tho really, the word is Japanese. Hearing this tweaks my nerves that it may happen when I move there. That's all.

The BBC is showing what is basically a translated version of NHK's news (which looks quite weird since both channels have nearly the same on-screen layout and the BBC news ticker is overlaying it), and at relevant points they've been showing broadcasts from other Pacific countries.

I've been watching the coverage nearly all day, and at one point, oddly enough, the BBC seemed to be ahead of NHK (as they re-confirmed the magnitude of the quake).

What seems to be irritating my father at the moment is when the BBC report various leaders of the world offering their sympathies to Japan. The Queen, the Pope, the Secretary General of the United Nations, David mega-twat Cameron, the Archbishop of Canterbury (?), and Obama. If Gadaffi offered his sympathies it would be news, but the Pope feeling sympathetic towards the down-trodden should probably be of lower priority than reporting what's happening at the minute, since, you know, that's sort of the Pope's job.

Not really that crazy imo, I expected a lot more considering their population density is over 800 people/km^2. It could have been a lot crazier if it happened elsewhere, like Monaco for instance. The whole country could have been wiped out.

In any case, my heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones due to natural disasters.

Also, this will probably mean delays on some games I've been looking forward to. This sucks!

I'm told Alaska and some of Canada are getting a few warnings, as well as all of California. Although I doubt it wont be anything life threatening for those areas.

Japan has been hit with worse things for sure.

Anyway, for my post. I actually noticed the news as I was logging off Facebook for the night. At first I was like "I hope they make it through this." After I woke up, it hits me. There has never been an earthquake of THAT magnitude, right? I saw a live report, and I was just amazed. Water was just filling the land as it does in the shores of a beach. I'm glad the people were prepared for it, but still saddened that there's an actual death toll for this tragedy. At least it didn't escalate into something like Haiti.

That's exactly what some of us are saying. It's a good thing it was Japan, because they had the building codes that are far superior to almost everywhere else. This saved lives. That's undeniably true.

And wishing it was anywhere else would just be insanely ignorant. That's why everyone jumped all over him about it. Kudos to you for "standing up" against the big, mean, angry, educated people of this forum, but maybe take a spin on your own advice do a little research before you type?

It was a stupid statement, and I think he deserves all the crap he's getting for it. Especially because he tried to defend it instead of admitting it was wrong. We all make mistakes, but how you deal with your mistakes is what makes the person. Can't believe I had to come in here and say that.

x.x I guess it was his fault for not admitting he was wrong. However, I have to disagree on something. They didn't seem to think or even imply that they were trying to say what I had posted just now. Not once have they mentioned a hypothetical situation were the earthquake was inevitable. They just asked why didn't he just wish it hadn't happened at all. Earthquakes are bound to happen. It's been that way since the beginning of time (?)

I still agree that Odin's statement feels wrong, but I think everyone should have handled it a little differently instead of just quickly jumping on him. Like Rocky just mentioned, the Report Post function.

On topic: Rocky, not that I know of.
