    Patriotism

    How patriotic are you?

Do you hold your hand to your heart as you sing your national anthem, do you religiously raise your countries flag every morning, do you have a symbol tattooed on you or do you serve in the military forces.

Don't get mislead by this thread I don't want to know which country is the most patriotic and who's country is the best just your patriotism personally.

Me I am no where near as patriotic as I should be I have no flag no tattoo nothing, I know its sad but I really don't have time to show it I suppose I sing the anthem proudly and I urge my country on in sports etc but that is about it.

    Re: Patriotism

Im not particularly patriotic but considering im half english/half irish i have this thing that whenever im in company that dont know me well of either nationality i play up the opposite nationality. When in english company, i just lay on the thickest irish accent imaginable and vice versa. The two countries dont have the most amiable past between them so its probably a bad practice but i do it anyway just to spite other people.

I do take offence whenever i feel people are levelling unjustified critisism at either country though. I wouldnt go so far as to put hand over heart for national anthems or any of that lark as i feel my loyalty is to the country, not the state who dictate such things.

    Re: Patriotism

I'm not the most patriotic of people. I prefer parodies of the national anthem and am getting disgusted that racist skinhead hacks are using the southern cross in the same way neo-Nazis elsewhere use the swastika. I am very sterotypically Australian in some ways, love my meat pies, beer, believe in giving people a fair go etc but really the only things I'm too proud of are how Aussies don't wear bodyarmour to play football and how we're so multicultural and shit. Yes, we do get some right racist ****s, though often the 'racism' seen by outsiders is seen as a big joke by everyone and the really racist ones are often limited to the major cities as going elsewhere will lead to them being bashed, occasionally by those great chaps in our motorcycle clubs.

I'm not patriotic, but I am proud to be English. The country has its problems and has had its share of bad history, like every country, but it is amazing how such a small country has had such a huge impact on the world in terms of discovery, and a lot of great names have come out of it. Asside from the taxes, expenses and the chavs (although everywhere has its own variety of those), it is a nice place to live. We also have great humour (especially in satire and slapstick), and make an art out of our love to complain about everything!

How is joining the armed forces patriotic.

I'm not patriotic, I live here, it's whatever. I don't remember the last time I was around for the national anthem being heard but I can tell you I didn't put my hand on my heart.

    Re: Patriotism

You can say that my heart beats for two countries, I'm proud with both Croatia a country from where I originate and Bosnia and Herzegovina a country where I've spend most of my life. I don't consider myself a patriotic but I do wish only the best for both countries, and regardless which anthem I sing my hand is always on my heart.

Some people take patriotism way too far, to the point where it becomes something else. Like racism or elitism. Especially in the U.S.

I guess I'm not very patriotic. I do tear up at the national anthem though. I stand with my arms behind my back though.

    Re: Patriotism

I consider myself to be a fairly patriotic person. I stand for the anthem and always take my hat off. I'll also yell at people who choose to sit or keep their hats on. **** that noise. You don't have to give a shit about the country you're in, but at least respect it's customs. It's even more deplorable when citizens refuse to stand. If you don't like it, get out.

Like Che, the anthem sometimes gets me from time to time... or maybe there's a little dust in my eye.

That being said, I love my country, even if we do occasionally screw up, there's no place I'd rather be.

    Re: Patriotism

Wow, Americans take their anthem seriously. We sing ours, in two languages, most people stand, but I don't see it as being expected. No one really puts their hand over their heart. The only time where I might would be at an ANZAC ceremony. But I'm also inclined to get sad not only about my fallen country men and women, but the men and women who had to fall on the 'other side'. At least representatives of their countries get to lay wreaths. But I've always found it weird how the armed services correlates to patriotism. It's so patriarchal, and just plain silly. I say this, even though my grandfather bombed Germany. Sorry about that.

As to my flag, well, how's this:

    New Zealand

    Australia

The blue is meant to be the same shade.

I want a new flag, but I'm also a closet monarchist. And all the suggested new flag designs suck. They all revolve around rugby. Like this:

I'd sooner move to Australia... wait, there's my patriotism.

I do, however, like the tino rangatiratanga flag. It's just that it's used by Maori separatists who would rather break the country apart than solidify it as truly multicultural.

    Re: Patriotism

I'm not patriotic in the slightest. I find the patriotic people in this country annoying and violent. I can imagine patriotism being being a playful jeer once upon a time, and now people take it way to seriously. It's turned into racism and hate against people from different ethnic backgrounds (not that racism has only just come about).

Patriotism used to be about being proud of your country's efforts. Nowadays, it's about football, racism and and which country has the biggest ****. No one is being brought up on morals any more.

I don't sing the anthem, half because I don't care and half because I don't know the words (because I never cared to remember them). I'd rather have my gums scraped than wear a tattoo symbolising my country, and as far as I know we don't own a clean flag. Oh, and you won't catch me joining the army unless it was to provide aid for other countries.

Me and my roommate cemented a huge flag pole in front of our apartment building. Every morning before I go out to school we go out, and raise the flag.

Sitting here waiting for Rocky, and Che to notice me!!
