    Lullabies You Were Sang

What Lullabies did your family sing to you when you were little?

My Grandmother sang most of the lullabies. She was very Irish and was passionate about music. Most of her songs she sang were Irish(Some were noticeably Scottish).

My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean
    Down In the Valley
    Froggy Went-A-Courtin
    Toora Loora Loora
    The Three Ravens
    Bonnie George Campbell

But the two I remember the most were:

...And a song I no longer remember the words or the name. Just the tune. My father thought, like a psychologist would, that they were all too morbid. So he used to sing me Beatles tunes. If any of you had any songs, you were sang to sleep with, put them here. I gave my sister my Depeche Mode album to listen to at night. She still loves the album Violator. lol

My dad use to sing Peter rabbit hop down the bunny trail, or something similar to that. I forget how it goes, but I remember I had (still have) Peter rabbit plush doll from when I was very little, and he use to pull its ears back and move its head around and it use to make me laugh. It's funny the little things you remember, it's very out of character for his personality, looking back reminds you of how much your parents must have loved you, that they would do/try anything just to see you smile.

I just found the name of that lullaby. Hurrah. It's as follows:

TWO LITTLE CHILDREN aka TWO LITTLE ORPHANS

Two little children, a girl and a boy
Stood by an old church door
The little girls feet were as brown as the curls
That hung upon the dress that she wore

The little boy's coat was all tattered and torn
And tears hung in his blue eyes
Why Don't you go home to your mother I said
And this was the maiden's reply

Mama's in Heaven, Angels took her away
She is gone to that land fair and bright
She said she would come for her darlings some day
    Perhaps she will come tonight

We can't earn our bread, we're too little, she said
Jim's five and I'm only seven
We can't earn our living since Papa is dead
And our darling Mama's in heaven

Papa got drowned on the sea long ago
We waited all night by the shore
For he was a lifesaving captain you know
And he never came back anymore

Perhaps, there's no room up in Heaven, she said
For two little darlings to keep
She then placed her hand under Jims little head
She kissed him, and both fell asleep

The sexton came early to ring the church bell
And found them beneath the snow white
The angels made room for two orphans to dwell
In heaven with Mama that night

    Hank whyyyyy do you drink?
Hank whyyyy do you roll smoke?
Why must you live out the songs that you wrote?
    Stop & think it over,
Put yourself in my unique position.
If I get stoned and sing all night long,
    It's a Family Tradition.

Well modern music definitely counts as lullabies! The above posts were mainly my Grandmother's contribution from her memory and shaking voice. My aunt also gave me a few records that would play on her turn tables: "Istanbul (Not)Constantinople", by Simon and Kennedy; and "Countin Flowers on the Wall", by the Statler Bros.; "King of the Road", by Roger Miller.

My dad gave me tapes of Paul McCartney and the Wings singing Band on the Run(thought they said band on the rug...and started to look for the rug) Golden Slumbers and Here Comes the Sun. He also gave me a couple of old Styx tapes....later I got E.L.O. and finally Pink Floyd's the Wall. So he failed the "too morbid" conviction drastically with that last one.
And my Mom put me to bed listening to blues and RnB. Bobby Blue Bland and his "It's not the spotlight" Fantastic song.

So I was raised inside music.

Not going to lie, I don't think I was ever sung to as a kid. Maybe as a baby, when I wouldn't remember, but even then... it just doesn't seem like something my parents would have done. My nan used to sing songs though, but they were old folk songs from the 30's-50's. She recognised some of the songs from Fallout 3, but I've never heard her sing them.

Huh. I've never been sung a lullaby, other than "Soft Kitty" by my boyfriend when he was being cute and sleepy. Dear god, what was my childhood...?

God. I've gotten Jay into Soft Kitty and now he sings it to the damn cat.

    It's quite annoying actually.

I sing the last song from the Care Bears Movie II, "Forever Young" and the opening theme song from the first movie "Care A Lot" sung by Carole King to my baby at night. Or well, we sing them to each other.
