I doubt he thought it was that funny at the time, considering how they were being invaded.
He's not that famous. It's the picture that was awarded with some prize.
I also read that (his mom said) that he bought the pink I [heart] NY boxers right before he got on the plain to Afghanistan.

EDIT: I think getting into combat with flipflops is really courageous. They're not that comfortable (and impossible to run with), and considering the rocky ground and the possibility of having to move quickly, getting injured is a lot easier with these things on your feet.
