Well he didn't plan it, he just got out of bed, threw his gear on, grabbed his rifle, and went out to defend his base. It's not too rare, really, this just happened to be caught on camera. Hell, I've sat in a bunker bare-assed naked before ... little bastards decided to mortar us in the middle of my shower. And while I haven't fought in boxers and a t-shirt, I have returned fire with my pants around my ankles ...

I doubt he thought it was that funny at the time, considering how they were being invaded.
He's not that famous. It's the picture that was awarded with some prize.
I also read that (his mom said) that he bought the pink I [heart] NY boxers right before he got on the plain to Afghanistan.

EDIT: I think getting into combat with flipflops is really courageous. They're not that comfortable (and impossible to run with), and considering the rocky ground and the possibility of having to move quickly, getting injured is a lot easier with these things on your feet.
