    Google it!

I tend to use google every single day for sometimes the smallest reasons. It could be to check my spelling, or look up a word or something I don't understand. Its 50-50 whether I use them for entertainment or for work. The amount of times I've told people to "Google it!", and the amount of times they've asked me to do the same is huge.

Sometimes searching something you don't understand can lead to a few laughs (when I googled LOLCAT) and embarrisment (when I googled BDSM (for the sake of your eyes, don't do it!)).

    So.

How often do you use search engines?

Do you use them more for entertainment or work purposes?

What would you do without them?

    The power of GOOGLE!!!!!

Well... I use it alot I'm a Google Groupie. Join us. We give out free cookies

But I too use it to check spelling - or for example if I need to get one of those accents over the letters. I probably google something at least 10 times a day. It's a great boredom buster... You can find out all sorts... Like before my op I googled stuff about it (and yes I know you should never do that xD But I go against the system )

I don't use it at work. Why? I don't work. Why? I can't get a job. Why? Don't go there. Why? I'll kill you ^~.

Umm but when I was at school (only last year xD), I used it alot for random searches. Google is by far my fave search engine. It's neat and tidy. Yahoo! looks messy to me... and the others I've never really tried... <_<

What would I do without them? Uhm... back to basics with books <3

I use them a fair bit and usually use Google as well for various reasons whether it be looking for history on a place person or object or old news articles. But it is a pain in the bum when i am looking for something specific and i can't find it on the first page of links so in the end i just give up after the first page and go back to huddling in the corner in the fetal position.

Yes some searches may lead to .. unsatisfactory pages and usually just leave and start again none of that crap interests me. I also like to use image google to get lots of dragon and anime pictures for backgrounds etc i think my last search was for DBZ tenkaichi cheats and i got side tracked looking at a cool DBZ site that has the description and a little bit of history/background of all the DBZ characters it was quite a good end to my search.

Yeah, I'm a google groupie too. I prefer it over any other search engine, as it's organized. Whenever I look something up, it's usually always on the first page. It's very convenient.. I also like the design and the title itself.

Without google, I'd go back to using some other search engine. Before google, I used MSN's search.

I only tend to use google if I need an answer about what exactly is the meaning of something that happened on a tv show I watch. Also, when a song I like is used for a commercial or tv show or something, I remember the lyrics, type them into google and add the word "lyrics". I usually find the title and artist that way.

To me, Wikipedia is God. History, geography, trivial stuff, band histories: It's all there.

And I'm studying English so to check spelling I have several semantic/phonetic dictionaries available around my room.

But yeah, google IS one of the best things that happened to the internet. And to think that Yahoo gets more visitors...

I use search engines every day.

Do you use them more for entertainment or work purposes?
Both, and I will explain. I'm not really human. I'm actually a cyborg of artificial intelligence. My mind is a system of networks, connected to the internet. The world wide web is my brain, and therefore, these search engines come in handy to somebody like me.

What would you do without them?
    I wouldn't exist.

To check my spelling, I use spellcheck on MS Word or dictionary.com - same for looking up words.

Other than that, I do use google for most things also. I used to use Blackle for a while, but I went back to google.

I'm similar to Unknown Entity when using search engines. Whenever I'm bored I type my name or a friend's name on google and see what comes up. I've only done it a few times. I usually look up online guides and cheats for most of the video games I own, books, information on a subjects I'm learning in school, etc. There are times where I would cheat on quizzes I take online by looking up the answers on google, haha.

    I sometimes find things that will probably scar me for life. x_x;

Wikipedia is very useful. You get a lot of in depth information on everything! Whenever I look up video games and anime, I usually find interesting trivia somewhere on the page.

Encyclopedia Dramatica, which is similar to Wikipedia in way, rots your brain though.

I also use google for small things XD... I check spelling, go search sites because I'm bored and for homeword purposes x3

How often do you use search engines?
I use search engines hourly everyday O.O.... I need them for many reasons like using an online dictionary because I don't feel like running around the house looking for one XD

Do you use them more for entertainment or work purposes?
I would have to say for more entertainment purposes since I love typing in random things in google to see what pops up =P... Wait unless school can counts as work since you do have to do work all the time because then I use it more for work purposes XD... You have to look up so many things for school projects and it takes so much time so it's just so simple to use google to get all the information :]

What would you do without them?
I would...carry a dictionary around with me at all times and play video games more often I guess..since I'd have nothing to do ^.^...

I google, wiki, or youtube search things a dozen or more times a day. Sometimes it's to find a song I want to hear, to check my spelling on something, to expand on my wealth of useless knowledge, to find a synopsis of a TV series that's old... etc.

Case in point: I was talking to my girlfriend today and she told me she had had too much caffiene and was having heart palpitations... I googled, then wikid this, to find out why it happens.

It's sometimes for school work, I'll google some sort of CPU socket, or old PC technology, things like that. I relied heavily on google to find binary calculators and converters because doing binary math on paper took too damn long.

If I didn't have search engines.... who knows. I use them so often I use keywords on firefox so that if I want to google something I type "g what_i'm_googling" into the address bar, or... "wiki what_i'm_wikiing" or "yt_what_i'm_youtubing" instead of dealing with the search bar on the side.

Google is amazing and very corrupting to the brain, in a nutshell.

Funny story from work I will share, I work with an autistic thirteen year old who happens to be very very smart. Well, he is going through his rebellious teenager stage, so keep this in mind. Apparently, I guess at home or somewhere, someone said a bad word, and his mom or dad told that person not to say such a "rude word". Well, this genius kid that I work with, he decides to google "rude words". Now when I work with him, the kid gets my attention and then yells out a bunch of swear words. I think its probably one of the funniest things ever to happen, but I have to be a good role model for the kid so I send him into another room if he decides to swear, which stops his language immediately because he does it simply for the lulz and attention.

Anyways, I think google is both great and terrible, because of the fact that you can find literally anything that you are looking for, and knowledge is power. But, with great power comes responsibility, which is saying a lot for many people, including autistic thirteen year olds.

How often do you use search engines?

    Quite often.

Do you use them more for entertainment or work purposes?

Both, I suppose. I do a lot of research on various topics (Wikipedia is not nearly as accurate as they lead you to believe), sometimes for my own writing but more often than not it's just to satisfy my own curiosity. In a way even my research could be considered entertainment since I do enjoy learning about new things.

What would you do without them?

I'd probably get a lot more writing done.

How often do you use search engines?
Oh, I use them every day! I can't bear without them, whether it's to search for random things, lyrics, pictures, gaming news, or anything else. They're just so useful because they're instant, not like books, where you have to actually locate the right page.

Do you use them more for entertainment or work purposes?
I use them more for my own entertainment, such as finding gaming news, lyrics, and other stuff like that. However, whenever I need facts for a research project that i have to do for homework, I just search the different site on Google. I think it's much faster than checking out a book and looking through it for that one book, only to find that it's completely useless; then you go and get another one, and it really takes up time. Although they always say that you shouldn't trust Wikipedia, I actually love that site! Whether or not the information is accurate, it's still valuable information. And besides, I trust that Wikipedia is about 80% correct? I'm willing to take my chances.

What would you do without them?
I would have to resort to either reading books, which i usually don't do, or I would just find some experts to talk to if search engines weren't around. But I hope that they won't ever disappear, or I'd be helpless!

    Everyday.

So here's a question to expand this thread a bit....

What makes you choose google over, say, MSN (or... whatever name they're using for it now) Yahoo, Ask.com or any other search engine? When did google become your search engine, and have you ever used another one?

Around '01 a friend introduced me to google as a way to image search easier, when I was looking for source images for photoshop creations, and that's when I made google my main internet search engine. I'm not really sure why it became my main search engine, and I don't know WHEN it became THE single name for internet searching.

I think switching to Firefox (then Firebird) in 2002 and it having a Google search bar integrated into the address bar was what really pushed me into using Google exclusively.

Yeah, how did Google become the most famous? I never tend to use Yahoo search engine; it's always Google. I guess maybe the page has more information or something? But it always appeals to me...

Because "google" is a funny word. Everyone likes to say "I googled Isla Fisher" instead of "I did a search on Yahoo for related articles and pictures about Isla Fisher". Also, when you give the word "Google" to hilarious people like myself, we can sometimes put a sexual connotation on the word. Then lookout, everybody! There are jokes coming your way!

How often do you use search engines?

Oh I google (see what I did there?) all the time. In fact, I'm googling myself right now!

Do you use them more for entertainment or work purposes?

When it comes to writing papers and stuff, I find it more beneficial to go to wikipedia and follow the references on there. I google (oh look at me I'm a cool cat now!) myself for fun.

What would you do without them?

I don't know. I'd probably dissolve into a primitive being that found the "comedy" of Jason Freidberg and Aaron Seltzer hilarious and listened to the "musical stylings" of Nickelback. Truly a fate worse than death.

I'd like to Yahoo Isla Fischer, if ya know what I mean!

Or maybe I would like to Dogpile her, I just don't know for sure...

IMO, I think a great way to make money would be to write a modern-age Kama Sutra and replace all the position names with the names of search engines. "Hey, did you end up googling that chick last night?" "Aw hell yeah man I gave her the ask jeeves and she went wild with it!"
