    Getting out of bed

    ...is the hardest thing.

I used to be good at it, getting out of bed early and doing my best work in the morning. Now I struggle to get out of bed earlier than around 8.30 (talking weekdays here).

I've tried everything (almost). My most recent initiative is to put my cellphone (alarm) on the other side of the room, so I have to actually get out of bed to turn it off. [Doesn't work; I just convince myself that I need five more minutes... like with every other strategy].

I suppose one solution would be going to bed at a reasonable hour. Well unless assignments wrote themselves, that's not happening.

Do you struggle to get out of bed in the morning? If so, what do you do about it?

    Re: Getting out of bed

Light is probably the only really effective thing that can wake me up but I have Blackout blinds in my room.

While in university the only things that got me up before 9 were Tests and assignments due earlier then 9. Otherwise I could just read the class notes and fill in the blanks myself with research at a more reasonable hour.

I don't have such a problem with work because I usually work afternoons or nights so it works out for me.

For me to get up in the morning usually someone has to wake me up themselves or I leave my blackout blinds open so bright lights wake me up. Then to stay awake I splash my face with cold water or take a shower to keep me from going back to bed. Moving my alarm does nothing as I usually just convince myself another 9 minutes (my snooze button) is worth it several times until I accidentally shut it off or resort to one of my other options.

Sadly this habit clashes a lot with my millionaire dream of owning a hobby farm as all work has to be done in the morning but then I figure if I'm rich enough I'll hire someone else to do that and I'll just enjoy the livestock/poultry at a decent hour later.

    Re: Getting out of bed

Dude, I just had to do that. I went to bed at gone 3am, and I was dragging myself up at 9am. I feel like a pro.

I have blackout blinds, so I can sleep all the way through mostly. I have a window above my bedroom door, and there's one above the bathroom (it's to spread light into the hallway because the hall has no windows) which can be a problem if I want to sleep in as the sun comes up on the bathroom's side of the house, and it can get very bright through that window. Best thing to do? Turn over and pull the covers up slightly. OR just get our of bed.

Also, as with most of our beds, mine is comfortable. Mum is talking about getting me a memory foam topper, which is going to be a total killer when I need to be up early. Like seriously. The only bed more comfortable than mine is mum's bed, which has one, and the amount of times I've gone in there and fell into that trap... x.x

Anyway. If I need to be up, I pick a time I want to be up, and then set my alarm half an hour before I have to be up. That way, I hit the snooze button three times, as I gradually wake up, and then I finally get up. And my phone is right next to me in the bed, on full blast. It probably isn't healthy, but it's the only way that thing will wake me up. If I'm still not up by then, I force myself up and into a shower, which finishes the job for me. Once I fell that clean and refreshed, I just want to put clean clothes on and go about my day.

    Re: Getting out of bed

    Entity! Thank you!

Solution: Set my alarm 30 minutes before I want to be up. Hit snooze a couple of times to satisfy my overwhelming desire to still be asleep. Finally find the will-power to get out of bed... on time!

    Trying that tomorrow!

    Re: Getting out of bed

I just man up and get out of bed, shit has to be done, and when your woken up your always going to be tired.

A friend of a friend is really bad at getting out of bed, so much in fact he has had to get alot of novelty alarms, ones that make you get out of bed like your method.

The best one i heard which i found hilarious was he had the clock/alarm in his room and when it goes off, he has to go all the way out to his car in the front garden to turn it off.

I find it hard to believe people have this much trouble getting out of bed

EDIT: Oh and i felt i should add i average 4-5 hours sleep max a night, you guys/gals need to get unlazy, srsly!

    Re: Getting out of bed

I just tried to do that this morning. And failed miserably. At least I can afford to take a day off lectures today I suppose.

I have a similar tactic of waking myself up. Or more like making the act of getting out of bed slightly more bearable. I have for a few years set my alarm an hour and a half before I am due to wake up, so at least it feels like I am getting a bit of a lie in .

Not so effective in recent years though. So now I set 4 alarms at half hour intervals before I am due to get up. Makes the process more gradual.

    Re: Getting out of bed

Normally I don't have any problems getting out of bed, IF I have a good reason to get up. Like: university (I love studying <3), work (and I need money to continue studying ^^") or an appointment (but I hate going to the doctor's or such).

When I don't have a good reason to get up, I really need to push myself out of bed (literally speaking). But really, if I'm still sleepy, I don't want to get up. :/ Though I usually never sleep longer than till 12pm.

I have for a few years set my alarm an hour and a half before I am due to wake up, so at least it feels like I am getting a bit of a lie in .
Gosh, my boyfriend does that as well and I just can't stand it. X_x I have ONE alarm and I really get up IMMEDIATELY. Otherwise, I fall asleep again and THEN wake up again. And then wake up AGAIN. That's just too much for my body... and my soul. I feel like I haven't slept enough when I'm at my boyfriend's place... ^^"

    Re: Getting out of bed

I live with my fiancée now and she doesn't really let me over sleep like ever. I, otherwise, have this same problem and one thing I found that worked really well was getting one of those old school brass bell alarm clocks. Those things scared the shit out of me into being awake, and, for the record, I am an extremely heavy sleeper.

    Re: Getting out of bed

I have always been an "Early Bird", but I do have to wake my brother and sister up a lot when they stay at my house. One summer vacation when my sister was home, and she told me to wake her up at a certain time. Well, when that time came, I woke her up and she said "I'm up". I came back ten minutes later to her sleeping again. I woke her up again. She said "I'm up". After ten more minutes, I filled a spritz bottle full of ice cold water and sprayed her until she jumped out of bed. She was mad, but she thanked me afterwards.

My brother is a different story. I had to buy an alarm clock that increasingly got louder with each time it made a noise. When he threw against the wall and broke it, I bought one that made a fog horn's sound. He then discovered it woke him up better, so then he got it set as an alarm on his cellphone.

I wish I could sleep in, though. Once it gets to be 8 a.m., I am up so I can start my day. The only time I sleep later than that is if I am not feeling well, and I am never not feeling well. I think I need to get sick soon. LOL

    Re: Getting out of bed

I got used to getting up early, as soon as I hear my mobile ring I'll hop on my feet (nice, it rhymes). Though I need ten minutes at least to get a hold of myself as I'm rather clumsy when I wake up. I'll get dressed just don't give me any sharp objects =).

My sister on the other hand needs few alarms, and even that is no guarantee that she'll wake up. Quite often she either get's late to whatever she need to attend to or I have to wake her up which is a drag.

Ha I set my alarm clock like an hour and a half earlier than when I need to get up, if not more. It makes me feel like I'm achieving more sleep, so I don't feel as bad when I actually HAVE to get up. I also have this weird one eye open thing I do before I get up in an attempt to snooze but not oversleep. It's like I'm half asleep and half awake, and the weird thing is I never oversleep when I do this. o_- zzzzz

That's exactly how I do it. I set my alarm for 20 minutes - 30 minutes before my "actual" wake up time. When I wake up, I just reset it for the desired time. Helps a LOT, since I've already gotten over the "groggy" wake up and the going back to sleep seems more like just laying in bed being lazy.

I will always be wide awake about 10 minutes before my alarm goes off. I work shifts so I get up at different times every day, and that really irritates me, leading me to sleep in when I am on a late shift or a day off.

    Re: Getting out of bed

I've never had a problem getting out of bed in the morning. It's a rather simple action. It's basically just standing up from a lying down position. It takes little to no coordination or muscle development. Little wimpy children with no coordination and no muscle mass are able to do it, so full-grown adults shouldn't have a problem, either.

However, if I were struggling to get out of bed, I'd probably visit a doctor to see if I have a chronic inner ear infection and are therefore incapable of finding my balance, or I'd consult with a physical therapist or personal trainer about developing unused muscles.

People who are paralyzed, are babies, have a crippling disability, or are in a coma are the only people with an excuse about not being able to get out of bed in the morning. Everybody else is just a lazy, whiny little bitch.

If i have to wake up without getting 10 hours of sleep then I have to hype up a bunch of panic about about urgent i need to wake up the next morning, when I wake up it kicks in and usually can give me the rush i need to get out of bed.

oh my god yes I do have this problem, and when you have the lifestyle of a bum that allows you to get up whenever since all your classes are taken online, I tend to stay up late and sleep a lot. It also doesnt help that my dog sleeps on my bed and doesnt get up before 12pm anyways lol.

If I need to get shit accomplished for the day I can get myself up with the simple cell phone alarm clock, but if I set it to get up when I dont have a lot to do for the day, I usually dont get up too early

5:45 every morning mon-fri, I work 7-3 so it really isn't an option. Everyone hates waking up, sleep is extremely comfortable no doubt bout it but if you need to take special measures to make sure you get out of bed when you're fully conscious of the fact that it is your alarm that is blaring in your ear and that if you don't get up you'll face consequences then I have to side with The Clint Eastwood...and that you're a wuss and need to learn self control. You're not a special circumstance, you are not any less capable of getting out of bed than anyone else. You are simply weak and need assistance with a task that requires little to no effort.

    Re: Getting out of bed

I had alot of troubles in high school getting up early. I usually left the house around like 8, so I had to be up around like 7:30 to get ready. This become even harder when I got a job, cause I would get home at like 11, and have to do homework.

Now I am in a bit of a routine. I am up at 5:15 everyday. No matter what time I go to bed this is when I am up. There is much to do before going to school, and then work. Gotta work out, this marine corps body demands attention.

Im definately not a morning person. but i pretty much found whats the least amount of hours i can sleep and still be good when i need to wake up. 6 is my magic number(hours) so i just work around that and that gives me way more time than i need.

Non taken. Good part of it leans on eastern European languages such as Russian, and Romanian, thus we have somewhat similar accent.
