Florida bill will repeal gay adoption ban - from Pink News - all the latest gay news from the gay community - Pink News
A bill to repeal a 1977 ruling against gays and lesbians adopting in Florida, US, has been introduced.
It is sponsored by state senator Nan Rich, a Democrat from Weston, who is introducing another bill to grant judges the discretion to determine adoptions solely on “the best interests” of the child.
She told the Miami Herald: "Someone who is a good parent – whether they are heterosexual or homosexual – that's what we should be basing decisions on, not sexual orientation.
"We need to be looking at what's in the best interest of children.”
Last summer, Miami-Dade circuit judge Cindy Lederman ruled that two gay men in the state could legally adopt the four and eight-year-old half-brothers they had cared for since 2004.
Her 53-page ruling found the law to be unconstitutional and to have “no rational basis.”
This week, a judge ordered that a pro-gay student club at a Florida school must be allowed to meet.
District judge Henry Adams issued the decision yesterday in a case involving two students from Yullee High School near Jacksonville.
Hannah Page and Jacob Brock had formed a Gay-Straight Alliance club after being targeted with abuse by other students, but the school objected to the group's name.

This is really good news, I feel really happy for the gay couples in Florida. As the report stated it shouldn't be about what sexual oreintation these couples are, but how good parents they are or could be. I think that if more states followed suit with this then I think more people will be more open minded and support everyone's equality.

You know what? It's people like you that make most people dislike homosexuals in the first place. You may not think this is a big deal but it gives gay couples the chance to raise children that not alot of US states like to see. In fact did you know that there are homosexual couples that raise kids better then heterosexual couples? My cousin is a lesbian and her partner Macy are rasing 2 boys and a girl and they act like a true family, most people don't see the goodness in the hearts of homosexuals and that's whats most important, not our sexuality but our hearts, open hearts that can provide kids with a loving home.
Also Govinda if you don't have anything nice to say or anything to contribute to these topics why are still posting in them? All your doing is causing more and more arguements to spread, your not helping anyone or yourself for that matter acting stuck up.

I have nothing against gay couples having children. At all. I don't think they raise kids any better or any worse than straight couples. As long as the kid has routine and stability in which to grow, and educated parents to nuture it, I have no problem whatsoever.
I am actually quite offended that you think it's 'people like me' who make people dislike homosexuals. Like I said in the other thread, a very good friend of mine is gay, and I'd never do anything to turn people against him on the basis of his sexuality. Also, your point makes no sense at all - how does a glib and offensive post make anyone dislike anyone more except disliking myself more for being annoying?
YOU are causing the arguments by posting things like this in the first place. You are clearly never going to understand that some people on here are never going to support homosexuality. Deal with it. A lot of them would also disagree with the way I view women's rights, so I make a point of not sticking it under their noses. Why respond? Why not just report me for the content-free post and be done with it? Or are the Powers That Be rallied against you because you're gay?
And I said it because I wanted to say it. I felt like saying it, so I said it. Does it make me stuck-up? Does it make me mean, or a homophobe? I don't know, and neither do I really mind. Stop getting tetchy about people expressing their opinions. You would have lauded me if I'd come in and said, 'Wow, great news.' Maybe I'd even have gotten good rep from you! That last negative rep, by the way, was a treat. Again, I was not trying to provoke you. I just pointed out something that made me smile.
If I'm frank, I do have a problem with you - I think you're a heterophobe. And I do not like that. I have the same utter distaste for that as you and me both do for homophobes. My sexuality does not define me and - are you sitting down? - yours does not define you unless you choose to allow it to. There is more to you than being gay, I'm sure, just like there's more to me than having a penchant for ****.
Thats really good to see gay couples are allowed to adopt children, but some people think that this is an issue with same sex parents because the kids are missing either a female role model or a male role model to look up to etc but i say good on em
