Do you feel bad when you kill insects?

I was sitting at my desk studying, and two flies kept buzzing around and pissing me off. After brushing them away every second minute for an hour, I cracked out the fly spray. Then I watched as their nervous systems shut down over a period of ten minutes until they died. And I felt kinda bad; they really looked like they were suffering. It made me think. They weren't exactly harmless. They have the capacity to spread germs and plant maggots into my food. The fewer flies there are in my room and house, the better. But they weren't causing my immune system to shut down. It felt kind of out of proportion. Maybe I should have just spent five minutes herding flies out of my room. It would have the bonus of making my room not smell like fly spray.

So, do you ever feel bad about killing insects? Do you rescue spiders before you run your bath? Shoo moths out the window? Or do you just kill with impunity and unacknowledged human hubris?

Re: Do you feel bad when you kill insects?

I don't go out of my way to kill every insect in the land, but if there are really troublesome flies/spiders/what have you, damn right i will give it some reckoning.

The kids I work with are all bothered/afraid of creepy crawlies, so it's best to get rid of the stimulus before they start becoming anxious.

Like, if i have an open opportunity to just shoo a moth out the window, yes I will do it. But its more of a convience thing, what is closer, the tissue or the window.

I try my best not to kill them. Sometimes I do on accident, and I feel bad. Not exactly insects, but in the case of spiders, sometimes they trigger a fight-or-flight response, and I do it on purpose. And I feel bad.

Most of the time, I'll either ignore them or help them move somewhere that isn't a problem for me.

Re: Do you feel bad when you kill insects?

I kill spiders all the time. This one time, I sprayed this HUGE huntsman, with fly spray, went to sweep it up, it CAME BACK TO LIFE! Scared the living daylights out of me! F*cking spider. I didn't feel bad about squashing that one.

But yeah, usually I don't go out of my way to kill anything. I do try to catch spiders in a container and release them outside, but it doesn't always work out . I try to avoid stepping on ants. I don't really have any interaction with any other insects.

I feel bad for killing insects, yes. But it doesn't excuse the fact that I am murderer.

I'm petrified of spiders so no, I don't feel bad about killing them, if I'm even brave enough to kill one. I think those and wasps are the only insects I don't feel bad about killing.

I feel really bad if I step on a snail/slug accidentally, though, because they really don't cause me any harm/fear.

Mosquitoes - Dead on sight. Don't even care.
Flys - eh Ill try to heard them out of my room, if they don't leave they die. They only live for a short period of time anyways and as far as I can tell do me no profit.
Spiders - I'm not exactly afraid of spiders, but I don't like them. I can still stand to pick one up, so I wouldn't say I'm deathly afraid. I'll usually place a spider outside in my grass.

I guess it really depends on the insect type for me.

Re: Do you feel bad when you kill insects?

I will try to get the bugs to go out the window. But if they can't take the hint, then they will most likely feel the wrath of my fly swatter. That is, if the spiders don't do their job. A spider in the house is perfectly normal. They cut down on flying insects. But I have one of those repellants that you plug into an outlet, so spiders don't hang around the house anymore. So, there have been more flies lately.

But no, I don't feel bad about killing insects.

I don't kill my spiderbros. They save me the effort of purchasing fly paper or other insecticide products. Also, have you ever seen a three inch wolf spider do combat with a wasp? Most awesome thing ever.

As for ending them myself, I do feel bad. Flies don't have a whole lot of consciousness, so it's not like they really have a say in the matter. They're just trying to survive, not unlike we humans. I try to avoid killing them as long as I can for this fact.

God told us all to protect his creatures. Not to kill them for being where they're unwanted. I don't kill insects. Insects kill me. They've killed me a dozen times over, and they'll probably end up killing me a dozen times again.

Especially those damn vicious butterflies. I have had to have so many heart transplant surgeries due to those things chewing through my chest, breaking my ribs, and eating my heart. Damn butterflies are vicious little shits.

I am very much the same.

I caught a spider once but didn't want to kill it at the time. I was already freaked out enough as it was. I didn't want to squish it because it was hiding on my favourite sweater. I dragged my sweater out into the hallway, grabbed a cup and lured it under the cup. It stayed there for 36 hours before it died. I did that so I could keep track of it. At first it stayed still for a while (as if plotting it's escape/ revenge). Then he ran around in circles for a while. When I came home one day I got my roommate to kill it, but the spider was already dead. Any other case the spider would have died on sight, but I was feeling mildly remorseful, and playful/evil. Haha, it was fun.

I kill flies, fruit flies and other creepy crawlies on sight. I can't stand em.

I suffer those daddy-long-legs to live, but I will kill every spider besides. I used to kill hoards of black ants back when I was careless with my clean-up in the kitchen, but nowadays they are mysteriously absent. The house is silent. Too silent.

Daddy long legs aren't spiders they are part of the arachnid family but not a true spider.

    Freaking LOL'd hard at this

I kill flies with natural pyrethrum that way I feel bad for killing the flies but feel good because I am doing the world a favour yay for me.

No I usually only kill bacteria carrying insects like flies and cockroaches or harmful ones that are in direct vicinity of my kids or the kids at work.
Actually I even feel bad about killing cockroaches because the only reason they carry bacteria is because they pick it up from our households other wise they are clean.
I used to kill Centipedes before I realised how beneficial they are because they sort of freaked me out but I don't anymore. Millipedes I will kill though because they eat plants and sorry a plant has priority of a millipede in my books.
Despite there names there has been no recorded Millipede to have a thousand appendages either.

Spiders I love spiders, once again I only kill Redbacks and Whitetails here in Australia because they are the most harmful in my area of Australia not including Funnel Webs because we don't really get them here.
I just don't want my children getting bitten, and until they are old enough to be mindful and conscious of them themselves. A redback can kill a child and even an adult. A White tail bite is similar to the American brown recluse spider.
All other spiders have my blessing especially garden spiders, all the females freak (sorry for being bias and stereotypical) when I catch Huntsman spiders bare hands to relocate them. I also bring in snakes that I catch and show them that usually gets them worked up haha.

The only insect that really irks me is ants not common black ants but all the rest I hate them and that is strange coming from a gardener and even in saying that I will only eradicate them if it is necessary.

    This is a Millipede^

    And this is a Centipede^
These are the ones that have a venomous bite.

And these little fellows are house centipedes probably your best friend in your house they prey on all insects inside cockroaches, silverfish, moths etc

My dad was an exterminator, so I'm not a fan of anything smaller than a squirrel. Rats, mice, and bugs in general are all enemies in my world. Except for praying mantises, cause those are bad ass.

I really don't have any remorse for killing insects. I very much practice the stand your ground law haha

This is a white tail spider. They have them in Australia as well as New Zealand. I kill these because they can give a nasty bite.

This is a katipo spider, native to NZ. They can give an even worse bite, so I would kill one of these. I've only ever seen one though. They're not a house spider, unless you live surrounded by rotting wood.

This is a Wellington tree weta. I wouldn't kill one because they're harmless (despite all those spikes), but a lot of people are freaked out by them.

However one time we cut down a tree in the yard and found one of these dudes living inside. It was the weirdest thing ever -- the limb was in the rubbish bin, and it kept running to the end of the limb, shaking its spiked legs and pincering it's jaws, then running back down, and then back up. It just seemed angry, and I didn't even know insects could be angry.

Apart from killing flies and poisoning ants, I'm also freaked out by wasps and would kill one if I had the nerve to not run away from it.

    Oh **** you. ^

I do feel bad. But sometimes they're up in my space. Like my room. It's my room, spider, not yours. You're just an insignificant little **** and there's like 10 of you for every one of me, and I'm going to squish you so your friends know not to step out into my territory. But continue eating all the other insects in my walls. Thanks.

The Katipo must be a relative of our Redback.

But Redbacks tend to like man made structures like sheds and garages and around garden settings, they especially like concrete structures because it suits their wispy style web.
They have even been known to eat snakes.

I usually find tiny spiders crawling into the kitchen from outside. What I do is direct my dogs to them and they'll either step or bite the spiders. Anything that's flying inside the car bouncing off the window glass, I'll shoo off so they can go outside.

    Bugs give me the shivers!

So many pictures!!! I want to stomp all over this page! It is good for a reference though. At least I know what I really should step on right away and which ones I can play around with before they die. XD

I forgot about wasps. I haven't gotten the nerve to kill one either. It's an "I would if I could" type thing.

    Bugs, bugs everywhere. @_@

I don't feel that bad when I kill one, actually. However, I do feel a little sad that I've killed a life, but at the same time, I'm pretty relieved that it's dead and it can't hurt me. I'm pretty scared of insects.

well thats very fukin childish if you ask me, theres a difference between instantly killing an insect because its disrupting what your doing, and going out of you way to starve and suffocate one over a period of nearly two days....

karma guna mess you up homes

When I saw the thread title, I thought this was going to be a troll thread, I guess I was wrong. OR PERHAPS IT IS A VAST JEWISH CONSPIRACY? No, I do not feel bad when I kill insects, what has the world come to?

Not in the least bit. I also don't go out of my way to kill them either. It's kind of an out of sight out of mind kind of deal. I know they're here, but if they aren't bothering me, I won't bother them. Get in my way and/or annoy me, prepare to die. As for how I deal with insects I find, I just do what's easiest. If it's right by a window or a door, I'll just shoo it out. If it's not going to make that easy, I'll go find the flyswatter or a boot depending on the speed of that type of insect. Boots usually closer and easier to find, so if its something slow enough for me to nail with a boot, it's gettin' the boot. One thing I will go out of my way to kill though are bees, I'm allergic to the bastards, so I deal with them quickly.
For Our Lord Sheogorath, without Whom all Thought would be linear and all Feeling would be fleeting. Blessed are the Madmen, for they hold the keys to secret knowledge. Blessed are the Phobic, always wary of that which would do them harm. Blessed are the Obsessed, for their courses are clear. Blessed are the Addicts, may they quench the thirst that never ebbs. Blessed are the Murderous, for they have found beauty in the grotesque. Blessed are the Firelovers, for their hearts are always warm. Blessed are the Artists, for in their hands the impossible is made real. Blessed are the Musicians, for in their ears they hear the music of the soul. Blessed are the Sleepless, as they bask in wakeful dreaming. Blessed are the Paranoid, ever-watchful for our enemies. Blessed are the Visionaries, for their eyes see what might be. Blessed are the Painlovers, for in their suffering, we grow stronger. Blessed is the Madgod, who tricks us when we are foolish, punishes us when we are wrong, tortures us when we are unmindful, and loves us in our imperfection.

Re: Do you feel bad when you kill insects?

I save as many insects as I can. I actually am extremely squeamish about the idea of seeing about what is inside an insect!!! But I won't rescue big spiders as they ate perifying! ( unless they are the ones with the slim long legs and the small bodies) I hate ALL House flies! I cant kill them as I am squeamish but if my head would let me past my squeamishness i would quite happily kill them, so I guess my answer varies I do feel bad killing anything but flies!!

Re: Do you feel bad when you kill insects?

It's rare I get an opportunity to kill a bug.
My complex is pretty good about pest control.

Every once in a while, there will be a cockeroach at work and everyone will flip out. I put on my rightious-holy-smiter face and tap it with my toe just hard enough to crack its shell and kill it without making a mess. I always cover them with a napkin or whatever cuz a lot of women get freaked out when they see its still twitching. Then I toss it in a trashcan and make a comment about being the top of the food chain, king of the castle, or how I kill for my homies.

Spiders get no remorse or second chances.
If its got more than four legs and enters my home, it dies. I will literally put all my weight into crushing a bug in my house. Overkill is the only kill.
