    Do manly men cry?

Yes I am on a thread making binge.

    Does a real man cry?

    What is your opinion?

Has society changed enough to recognise that men are allowed to cry now.

I remember my dad would always used to tell me toughen up not in a nasty way, and now in certain instances I really tend to be finding myself doing the same with my son but not in a real cruel way like they would have in the old days, I was just brought up not to fret the small things you know to weep over spilt milk.

Some might say it's in our nature to be or at least try to be less sensitive than our better half, thus men enforce such behavior. If you ask me, sure, men should cry if they feel they need to, not all of us can handle a rough situation equally, and it's good for your health, or so I hear, to shed a tear or two every now and then.

I think it's perfectly acceptable for men to cry, especially during emotional times like a relative's death, their wedding, etc. However, I don't like feeling I have to baby a guy. Overly sensitive can be really annoying and crying all the time over the littlest things drives me insane (I've had an ex boyfriend like this). Though to be honest that applies to all people, not strictly men.

    Re: Do manly men cry?

I have only cried two times in the past 5 years. One was when a man really close to me died. He was a mentor to me, and taught me so much stuff, and his death was very hard for me cause I was always use to to having him there to help me. The second was when my ex-fiance gave birth. I was so happy that I broke down and cried when the child was born, found out later through her, and test that the child wasn't mine, and that she had been cheating for a year.

Haha, I used to make boys cry all the time XD!

Seriously though, if a guy is upset or angry or just plain pissed off, it's perfectly normal for them to cry. Just don't dwell on it and make a scene. That's what girls do. There are some MAAAAAD Drama Queens(Guys) out there though. I tend to avoid/ignore them. It's sad to see a guy like that. It's half the reason why I avoid Pride Week in Toronto. *shudders*

Everybody cries. Not just manly men or the like. The frequency of how much a person cries depends on their life situations and how that tend to handle them.

Never fear! The Art of Manliness is here to answer ALL of your questions regarding when it's okay to cry, and so much more!

As for my own personal opinion, everyone has moments when they need a good cry. Holding an emotion in like that will do more harm than good, so let those tears fall. Ain't no shame in that.

I never cry. When I was a boy, my mama got hit by a bus. At her funeral, I was about to cry, and my papa told me the three words that I have lived my entire life by. He said "Only pussies cry."

Now, whenever I see a crying man or a crying boy, I grab his shoulder, look him in the eye, and say "Hey douche bag, wipe those pansy tears from your face and grow some balls." I don't tolerate crying from males. Not even from the homos.

I cried reading this, it is so touching.

Does the natural bodily function to flush foreign debris from ones eyes count as crying?

    Re: Do manly men cry?

i think one of the hardest things to do is cry, even at funerals. since 2001, my grandmother, favorite uncle, and another uncle(most recent last year) all passed. its like, i cant tell if im not strong enough to cry, or if i'm just being strong.. in many situations i wish i could cry.. i think i remember crying 2 times in the last 8 years though ( ex girlfriends..lol).

being able to express certain emotions thru crying is a strength imo.. <-depending on what yo bitchass is crying about

    Re: Do manly men cry?

Some men actually can't cry except in the most depressing situations.

Case in point, up until a few years ago, I often had a good cry when I was upset. I still get upset but now the tears just don't come, the last time I shed a real tear was at my grandfather's funeral a year ago, and I felt like I had to force myself at times (since crying can actually make you feel better).

I'm not ashamed to cry on sad occassions. My tear ducts just won't obey me.

    Re: Do manly men cry?

In all honesty though, I'd feel like an absolute bitch if I were to cry. If I ever have that feeling I hold it back and it ends up as a pain in my throat instead. The last time I did cry was almost 2 years ago and I was talking to my gf about a friend of mine that passed away. I hadn't talked about it to anyone really. I was also a little drunk that night but Im usually a happy drunk.

    Re: Do manly men cry?

I think it's perfectly natural for men to cry. We're all humans with feelings and tear ducts. If anything, I'd be slightly threatened by a man who doesn't cry in joy or sadness. It's like wtf happened to him to make him so damn cold.

I also don't think it makes men stronger or weaker. Everyone goes through some upsetting experiences, and if anything, I encourage crying - it really does make you feel better, if not a tad bunged up and snotty.

It's ok for guys to cry. Just as long as your not blubbering like a little b*tch. That goes for men and women. Have your cry, move on. I used to cry all the time when I was a little girl, I'd cry at just about everything. It' was so silly. Most of the time I cry in private. Sometimes in a relationship especially, it's good to see a guy cry at least once, it makes you realise that they do have feelings and aren't a complete jerk.

    Re: Do manly men cry?

I never understood that whole "men aren't allowed to cry" thing. I'm a guy and when I lost close relatives you best believe I was in tears. I'm not ashamed to admit that either and I bet even the most hardline, macho men of this world have succumbed to their emotions once or twice in their lives. It's what makes us human.

    Re: Do manly men cry?

I love che but I still can't +rep him. It makes me cry.

I am not threatened or uncomfortable when men cry. Dudes get sad. In my mind, it's the same for guys as it is for girls: if you're crying to be manipulative/get your way, you can **** off. If you're genuinely upset, I will hug the shit out of you.... and probably cry with you.

Side note: I am a sympathetic crier. If someone I love is losing it, I can't help it, I start crying with them. If it's my own stuff, I can usually hold it together pretty well. But someone else is upset? Better cry.

One of my friends recently lost his father. I went to the funeral with boyfriend (who is even closer to said friend) and did pretty well up until our friend choked up while saying the eulogy. I mean, pretty much everyone lost it at that point. But no one thought, "Man, he sure was a bitch for crying." Dude lost his dad, but was able to give an excellent eulogy and help take care of the rest of his family... that's manly as shit.

I guess I think honesty is a good trait for both genders, and that includes being honest with your emotions and how you need to express them. When a man is comfortable with that, I respect him. Which, I suppose, translates into "manly."

Would you think some one cold or emotionless for not crying at a relatives death or a truly emotional event?

I think I have affected my ability to cry I don't how maybe I have been so hard on myself over the years but when I really feel like crying I can't maybe it's from all that cement.
