    Crying over spilt milk

EDIT: Please move to GC. And don't ask why I keep accidentally putting threads in the wrong place.

Just then, I was typing away on word, summarising a journal article I had just read.

At the same time, I am attempting to install 19gb of software (a huge mother ****ing statistical package), which made things a little volatile.

I was pretty engrossed in it, when everything froze up. I realised I hadn't saved, and tried using my limited (that's being generous) knowledge of computers to save it from annihilation. Most of my hopes rested on an auto-recovery, which didn't eventuate.

It wasn't a lot of written text, but it represented a lot of text I had read and thought about; so it was still considerable work.

When I lost it, I was pretty pissed off. But I told myself that it was just spilt milk, and either way I would still have to re-type it. So I started to. It's faster doing it a second time, but I actually noticed that I had a better appreciation of what the author was arguing, and picked up that what I thought the text was about was in fact pretty wrong.

So, by resigning to my fate and 'wiping up the spilt milk', I actually came out with better work, at the cost of some minor frustration.

How do you react to such 'spilt milk'? It could be like a forum post you are writing that is lost when you accidentally close a tab. Do you give up? Punch something? Make something even better?

I pretty much have to leave, take my mind off it for a second in a situation like that. Then I have to convince myself that it never happened, and if I can't do that, I have to convince myself that it's going to be better the second time around.

    It's not easy. :/

    Re: Crying over spilt milk

I recently lost my Flash Drive that had all my school work and projects I needed for my Portfolio at the end of the quarter for my final. It only occurred to me that I haven't been bringing it to class 3 weeks before the portfolio was due. The week it was due I had to show up early to school and redo most of the work.

How I dealt with it? Honestly I told myself, I can fix this and get the grade I need for an A in the class. I had my plan once I realized what happened.

I've been like that throughout school, I've always just figured out a way to make sure I got everything done when I was late on something or running out of time.

In response to something like Alpha's situation. I would probably take a short break to recuperate myself to get back to where I last one as fast as possible. Depending on what it was, it can be rough.

I always wonder when the forums suddenly crap out, how the people online react to it. I have this impression that people freak out and start cursing about the staff (probably me... ^^ )

I don't really let spilt milk scenarios bother me. Getting angered is a waste of energy, because in the end it solves nothing. The accident is done, all that is left is to clean it up.

On the other hand, I don't consider car "accidents" to be a spilt milk scenario, let alone an "accident". If you're driving your car down the road and a toilet seat falls from space and totals your vehicle... THAT is an accident. What can you do? Laugh it off and move on. If someone is texting while driving and plows into you, that is not a spilt milk scenario and I would not shrug it off.

It's, fortunately, been a really long time since I've lost anything, computer data wise, that I care about. Thinking back on a moment in which it did happen I think I just throw a huge swearing fit, throwing around pillows, or other non breakable items, while trying to expand my profane vocabulary.

I don't understand... why didn't you just throw the pc out the nearest window while spewing random profanities about the system from your mouth hole and then not bothering to do the work again?!?

Anyway without coming off crazy i tend to be short tempered about the little things like that, whats annoying about it, is in retrospect i think exactly like alpha, but in the heat of the actual moment i cuss and rage and pound desks. I get told off for doing it in work, i think its stress related and i got that shit in spades...

I've been trying to train my mind not to be a short fuse but so far haven't been really successful

    Re: Crying over spilt milk

Being in the job I am in, I have found that I am a lot more calm than I used to be when things go wrong. At my restaurant (I work at McDonald's, just in case anyone didn't know) things go wrong all the time, and at least one thing is either not working (coffee machines, I'm looking at you! ) or out of stock. The only thing you can do in the case of not being able to provide something is apologise profusely and offer something else, or take it off the bill or issue a refund if you're too late.

My desktop computer's hard drive has crashed, and I've lost a lot of iTunes stuff. I managed to back up most things (along with my resume and unfortunately, some gay lyrics my boyfriend wrote) on a Flash drive, which itself was temporarily lost in the mess that is my house! I found it, thankfully, whilst looking for something else.

I get a little frustrated, but then I calm down and it's all good. The amount of times I've gone to reply to a thread and accidentally brought the curser out of the textbox and hit backspace is ridiculous. Chrome is supposed to hold unto your text, so if you hit Alt+right arrow, it'll be back as normal, but it doesn't always do that.

    Punching a hole through my monitor isn't going to solve much, so I just get over it. ^^;

It sucks when stuff like that happens, from computer failure to not saving and losing hours of gameplay because you get a gameover. I used to yell about it, but after awhile I just do the whole "*sigh* really.." thing. I'll take a 5-10 minute break, then I'll get back on it; the sooner you (re)start, the sooner you finish.

Then again this one is kind of on the outs with me if she doesn't straighten up and fly right so that means I will be back in it for the thrill of the kill. Got some in the reserves. Even got a rePETEr (<---- like that ay? AYYYYY?) on the back burner.

Block: I do like the rePETEr except it kinda makes it sound like you're going to pork Pete. No homo.

Haha. In situations like this I almost always have this kind of "that WOULD happen" attitude. It's like I'm constantly being trolled in life with little things here and there, but I kind of like it now. It makes life interesting and I always lol when it happens. I call it "stupid luck", not bad just stupid

I handle those pretty well I think.

I'm thinking about creating a hybrid. A dolphin-monkey. Half dolphin, half monkey. Do you think it's possible?
I was thinking that since I'm artificially creating it, I'll create it with rocket fuel instead of blood, and thus it will be able to fly, using the dolphin's dorsal fins as wings. And from the air, it will look down upon us all and protect us against sharks, and search for bananas.
