So I was eating lunch the other day (Chineese obviously) and it hit me that alot of people think I am weird for being white and using chop sticks.

I always get weird looks for using them when eating in public. So I was curious as to who else uses them for eating Chineese (or any Asian foods at that)?

I have used them since I was about 6 years old and have used them ever since. It now feels weird if I don't use them.

Wow, that person's doing something normal!!!
Unless the person was using chopsticks to eat a burrito or lasagna or something, in which case I'd wonder why aforementioned person was doing so.

Maybe things are different in Australia, but a lot of people I know can and will use chopsticks for Chinese food if that's what the food is served with. It's not really all that difficult to pick up.

How often?

Ah, I might eat Chinese, on average, once a week. Maybe once every two weeks. Sometimes I use a fork for the Chinese, because the fried rice isn't as easy to pick up with chopsticks as sticky rice is. But I usually get sushi too, which is all chopstick material.

Years. Since high school, probably. I actually taught my high school girlfriend how to use chopsticks.

I do! I'm only only one who likes to use them in my house, despite everyone knowing how to use them. They make eatting fun, and I feel it make the food taste better - with a fork, you tend to just pile it up and shove huge mouthfuls in your gob. I guess there is a tiny weeny bit of a respect side to it aswell. ^^;;

How often?
Meh, not that often to be honest. I can't even remember the last time I had chinese or sushi. Must have been a good... what, two months since I ate it? Even then, I didn't use them.

Well, when I do use them (), I've been using them since... I was quite young. I remember trying to learn at school with pencils - some d*ckhead I knew at the time was showing off to everyone that he could, and I proved him wrong after about a day of practice. ^^;;

What are your thoughts on people that do use them?
I like seeing other people use them. It's normal to see people using them, especially if they are eatting chinese - I'd be worried if I saw the people in McDonalds using them to eat fries and a burger.

I can use chopsticks but i very rarely do. Why waste time when you can shovel it down with a fork lol Chopsticks a good when you want to savour the taste and if you like cold Chinese.

I only use chopsticks when I eat at an asian restaurant. I'm alright with them.

I have never used chops sticks, but I have always wanted to try them out.
I order chinease ALOT but have never seen one a chinese that sends chop sticks with the food, thought maybe if I was in a chineae resturant then you might have the option of using, but I have only ever been in italian or indian resturants so I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure that I could buy them somewhere, but I would need someone to show me how to use them.

Most of the time (atleast here in the states) you have to request them to send you chop sticks and they will charge something like 5 cents a pair. I have never actually received them with out having to ask for them.

It is actually easier then it looks just as long as you don't over think it.

My wife had no clue how to use them, people had tried to teach her before and she could not get the hang of it. After about 5 minutes of me teaching her she was using them like a champ.

As for them being on the slower side, I have never noticed it. Maybe I have just used them for so long that I eat fairly quick with them. Just as fast if not faster then eating with a fork.

Most Chinese food restaurants in Houston don't supply forks and spoons unless you ask for them. Here it is more abnormal to use traditional American utensils (fingers & forks) to eat Chinese rather than the latter.

I use chopsticks pretty much all the time unless I've been given a soup without noodles (in which case I use a spoon), something that is meant to be held, or a hunk of meat. I have forks at home, but I mainly use those when my mom gives me a steak or when we have company over. I'll use a fork some other times too, if my mom hands me one and I'm too lazy to get a pair of chop sticks. I also use plastic forks when I'm at school for my packed lunches though, since all throughout the first week of summer school, when I did bring them, I kept getting fob comments (even though I'm not!) and got annoyed. The rest of the time, I use my sticks.

Pretty much since my mom stopped feeding me baby junk and I stopped using my hands to shove things into my face. Oh wait! Spoons were my transition between hands and chopsticks, since no one wanted me to lose an eye. ^^

Whenever I cook oriental cuisene or eat rice/noodles. I guess thats about once a week. If theyre not used for chinese or thai, I use them for steamed fish and spinach on rice. I will normally have one of the 3 once a week.

Since my early teens. 13, maybe 14? I've always loved world foods and world cultures, so I wanted to learn how to eat with them from a young age. I remember trying when I was a lot younger, and having the clumbsy fingers that the average kid has I didn't learn until I was in my early teens. Most of my family can't use them.

What are your thoughts on people that do use them?
I don't have any particular thoughts. If people want to use chopsticks, thats fine with me, and if they want to use a knife/spoon and a fork, that's also fine. It's a matter of personal preference.

(I'm from PhiLippines.. and basicaLLy peopLe there don't use chopsticks, I grew up using spoon and fork, LuckiLy for me 'coz I'm not Chinese, Japanese nor Korean.. so.. that's why..)

Your the first Asian person i've met that doesn't know how to use chopsticks. But yes they are extremely hard to use. I Can remember when i went Tokyo, and we went out for tea, and everyone was using them exept me.

Who looks at you weird? Other white people or asians? I use chop sticks when I get chinese or I got to a Japanese Cuisine place. The chinese restaraunt you have to ask for them but in the Japanese Cuisine place they are automatically given and a customer has to ask for a fork/knife/spoon. I like using chop sticks when eating oriental food for that is how it is eaten. I eat pasta with a fork, sushi with chop sticks. Not that I wouldn't eat pasta one day with chopsticks but that would be weird.

I use them when I can. Generally when I go out for Sushi or to a few particular asian restaurants. That said, just because it's an asian restaurant doesn't mean I automatically go for the chop sticks. It depends on what I'm eating. Fried Rice is damn near impossible to eat with Chop Sticks generally, but stick rice? Totally different story.

I often go to a local Sushi bar, at which I only order Sushi, Octopus and drink Sake. I continually use chopsticks. And I never really encountered a problem learning how... Using them came quite natural.

I think it's great, it adds to the experience of going to a Chinese restaurant and it another unique thing about them.

I think it's really cool and it helps people have more experience with the asian culture. I don't really find it wierd seeing white people use it but that might be beacause I am interacial.

I use em. I'm Chinese. Been using them for a long time now. I'll admit I can't use them properly though. I just never learned the right way. I can still use them though, which is what counts the most I guess. It's just slightly embarrassing if someone points out that I'm using them incorrectly. This, admittedly, hasn't really happened, unless they're pointing it out about themselves too.
