Holy crap! Who would spend $17,000 on one video game? You'd have to be totally obsessed and rich to do that! I mean, a $60 video game for me seems expensive enough, but $17,000? Wow...
So I was checking my email and found this article.
The $17,500 video game - Plugged In - Yahoo! Games
Apparently its a rare NES game that there are only 26 of and this guy is a relaly big collector so he bought it for 17,500. it was originally listed on ebay for 25k but the guy gave him a deal, plus there is only 6 minutes to the game... What are your thoughts on this? How much would you spend for a game you loved? or games you collect?
I think spending that kind of a money on a video game is nuts. Unless you're really rich and can just throw money out the window. Especially in this recession we are in,i'm keeping tabs on my money more and not spending much. I haven't bought a video game in months and even when I did it was only like 20 bucks. I'll leave the rest to you guys to share a story.

Curiosity Conquers, So Click:
Isn't it the Nintendo All-Star championships or something like that? Gold Cartridge? I didn't click the article XD. I saw something about it a good while back, actually.
Stuff like that can be really really expensive, and rightly so. If enough people are willing to spend money on it (and being that there were only 26 there's a lot more potential buyers per cartridge, which drives value up) then of course it'll be worth a lot. It's kind of like how wayyyy back in the day when pokemon was popular (old school pokemon, mind you) a 1st Edition Base Set Charizard Holo could go for up to 250 dollars.

Well, when you've got nothing better to do with your money, you buy random crap. I mean atleast its better then say buying a random skull of someone important, or something that you cant really use... I mean you can play it, even if its only 6 minutes and 21 seconds long.....
Okay, first of all, if the game is only 6 minutes long, there's NO POINT in buying the game no matter how cheap it is. (Unless of course, you collect the game seires) Second, $17,000?!?! Was that person insane?!?! Only addicted millionaires would do that!!!
Unless you run a convention, and happen to have a game room, in which case you'd want to have it as part of a tournament, anyone watch The Wizard? The story about that kid who went to California to play SMB 3? With a horrible quote about the power glove? That thing there is what they were playing, after 6 minutes who ever has the most points wins.
The funny thing about this is that the game will probably NEVER see an NES again. I know if I spent that kind of money on a game I would put it in bubble wrap, seal it in a titanium box and not open it for the rest of my life. I would hand it down to my son and have him sell it off as a collectors peice in the very distant future. Think of how if it sells for $25,000 now (or $17,000) how much it would be worth in 40 something years.
So as avid gamers this might teach us all a lesson as what to hold on to.

And my friends thought me spending nearly half a grand on an original sealed mint condition copy of Final Fantasy VI (JAP) for SNES was crazy. Pfft.
Well worth it as it's the original version of my favourite game of all time. I will *never* let it go nor be opened or marked. Not like I need to though, I have a FFIII SNES (NA), FFVI PSX (PAL) and a FFVI GBA (PAL) to play through and it's ever released on DS I'll grab that too on release. Might preorder a few copies...
Did I mention I'm crazy for FFVI like half the fanboys here are for FFVII/FFX/FFXII?

They should give me that money so I can comfortably live for like a year Think of how much food that money could have bought. Or one relatively nice, perhaps used car. I can think of a million ways that money could have gone to better use. I could understand if it were a fine work of art, or something else worth looking at (maybe)... but an NES cartridge? Come on! People spend their money on stupid shit. That person certainly has a lot of money to flaunt. Anyhoo...
Wuv, Yer Mom
I've got a bridge I wanna sell this guy...
This might be the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I mean seriously, 17K on a videogame?! That dude is never getting laid again

Ouch... lets hope the wife doesn't find out. 0.0
I'm cheap when it comes to games, and usually wait it out a month or two before getting one because I could save anything from £10-£15 by waiting for a sale, or getting a pre-owned copy. There is no way in hell I'd pay over £60 for a game, and even then any price lower would have to be thought of long and hard.
They want me to pay £50 for a sealed Final Fantasy VIII game... *sniff*
I cant even imagine what $17,000 looks like but to spend it on a NES game is just fricking crazy. I just hope that game has a cartridge made of diamonds. There is only one way I would spend that much money on a game. Only if I had so much money that I wipe my ass with it.
Well even if I was rich I would not throw away my money especially not on a 6 minute SNES game.I am a collector of many things and mainly Square products but I would never spend that much money to add but one game to my collection. That is just nuts.
People who don't have better things to do with their money than buy completely overpriced and mostly useless material possessions sicken me.
That 17.5 grand could've been better used for philanthropy, instead of his game collection.
exactly my point.
People are silly, but we all make choices. Either the game means that much to them or they're just doing what they want. I don't like people questioning how I handle my money so I won't questions theirs.
that is seriously stupid. the most i would spend is $70 at most but that amount is outragous.
At the end of the day, it comes down to one hero to save us all.
Does that **** have any idea how many malaria nets that would buy?
People need to be shot for shit like this.
OK ppl, don't lose your minds and think carefully...What happened to the guy who sell it?
He probably said something like this "OK, here's the game for 17,000...Loser"
If I can't find FFVIII anymore I would buy it for 1k...Not kiddin

You know I can kinda understand if you have that kind of money and you remember the actual Nintendo World Championships. I went to the Dallas kick off in March of 1990. I was 11 years old and all I wanted was to play. We got there late and the registration was closed. We stayed for the second day and left. I still have the t-shirt and some of the pins. What I remember the most was an inflatable Mario, looming three stories tall, greeting everyone at the entrance.
That better be the best damn 6 minutes of my life if I'm going to pay 17k for it. The most I would ever pay for a game would be around $60-75 depending on what it is. I understand that guy was a collector, but 17k?! He could have bought a bunch of games with all that money!

im cheap, i barely spent 60 on a video game but this guy was nuts, that must be some easy game tho
Been gone a long while but im back now and not as annoying. promise
THANKS TO ANDROMEDA
It's funny how the more money you have, the less of value it seems to have. That 17,000$ could have been used for a much better cause. That game is probably only nostalgic, and would suck to play now.
People will collect anything, though. Old people love to collect antqiues and stuff from years ago, while the most modern thing I've seen would have to be virtual items (I sold an FFXI character for $250).
