Thread: Aeris or Aerith?

    Question Aeris or Aerith?

I have been pondering this question for a while now so i just had to ask. What is the right way to address her as Aeris or Aerith? I have the english version of the game and the game automatically names her Aeris so i have always called her Aeris. But in so many threads and posts and other final fantasy sites on the internet she is often addressed as Aerith. So which is the correct way?

    Re: Aeris or Aerith?

Her actual name is Aerith, but in the English translations it is Aeris, so neither is wrong really. Hope I helped :')

Wikipedia -----> Aerith Gainsborough (エアリス・ゲインズブール, Earisu Geinzubūru)—known as Aeris Gainsborough in the English translations of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy Tactics.

Consider this. Michael Jordan, is he Michael Jordan or Mike Jordan? Mike is just a nickname for Michael in this case. Aeris can just be a nickname for Aerith.

Aeris. That "thhhh" sound just ruins the name. Seriously, say both of 'em out loud. It gets so annoying.

I always pronounced it "air-E's" actually.

I'm guessing english speakers will want to say "aerith" and japanese the aeris maybe because it's easier to pronounce for them? lol

Me too. Then I found out that the phoenetics are wrong for "Aer-ees" because there is no E after the I.

I think you are probably right like Just like the Chinese say "flied" instead of "fried" (I've never heard a single Chinese person say this with an "R" )

yeah and I know that Japanese speakers in general have severe trouble acquiring new languages, so the "th" we have in english would be a huuuuge impediment for them, I'm sure. So naturally, like Germans make the "th" into a 'z' sounds, the asians make it an 's' sound.

and what do you mean the phonetics are wrong for 'aeris'? That's how it's pronounced, just doesn't necessarily mean that's how it's spelled. Unless it's "Air-riss"

    Re: Aeris or Aerith?

I mean that if you say the word Aeris phonetically, then it doesn't (phonetically) make sense to say "Aer-ees", the phonetic way to say it would be "Aer-iss"

    Re: Aeris or Aerith?

I always take the original pronunciation "Aerith". Its supposed to be synonymous with "Earth", being a Cetra in touch with the planet and all. Just like the deep religious and philosophical origins behind the name "Sephiroth"..Heh .The creators also accepted "Aeris" because with the japanese tongue it is said like "Aeri-su". I personally love the way it sounds like that. Like "VinsenTO".. It sounds softer and gentle which I love.

    Re: Aeris or Aerith?

Wow. There had been quite a debate about this at one time. I do prefer the Aeris version because it is what I am accustomed to. Also, I pronounce is "AIR-ISS". I think it just flows better. Also, I have a BA in English, so I have the credentials to say I am pronouncing it correctly.

    Re: Aeris or Aerith?

Well her actual name is Aerith but there's no 'th' sound in Japanese and the closest was the 'su' sound. Therefore her Japanese name was "Erisu" but her actual English name is "Aerith"

    Re: Aeris or Aerith?

I have seen it both ways. I personally prefer Aeris, as it was how it was spelled when the game first came out here in NA. I grew up with Aeris.

    Re: Aeris or Aerith?

When I first played it I call her Aeris because I didn't know about the translation error. Now I know so I always call her Aerith since that's her correct name.

When I played ff vii way back, I first saw "Aeris" used and that is what I will continue to use until the end of time.
