10.) Super Mario Brothers on the N.E.S.! While I really don't need to tell anyone why this is on my list, I will. NOSTALGIA!!! Everytime I hear the music or see it played I feel as though I am five years old all over again! Plus it is proabably on the top five best side-scrollers of all time, but that is another list all together.
9.) Sonic The Hedgehog! Again, probably on the same top five list as Super Mario Brothers, and again, carries a place in the heart of my inner child. I grew up as a Sega kid more so than a Nintendo kid, so this game is iconic to me!
8.) Shadowrun (Sega Genesis). This game was my first foray into the Cyber-Punk genre, and is probably the most identifiable Cyber-Punk game of all time. The world was fascinating and the gameplay was enthralling! Everything was so dark and you could trust NO ONE! It was my first exposure to adult gaming, so it will always be special to me.
7.) Samurai Showdown! The best 2D fighting game of all time! It had all the elements that you could want in a fighter! Great characters! Great control! Great moves! Plus it is the ONLY fighting game of that era with interactive sword-play. Sure, there were other games featuring sword weilding characters, but you couldn't cross blades or disarm them! In my opinion, the most ground-breaking fighter of all time. It paved the way for Guilty Gear, which I believe sort of took the torch that Samurai Showdown has lit.
6.) Metal Gear Solid! My first exposure to the "Stealth" Genre and I will never forget it! I can't count the nights that I played that game in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down. Anyone who remembers their first time playing MGS remembers the thrill of sneaking up on a guy and snapping his neck, then disappearing into the shadows to find another unsuspecting victim!
5.) 1000 Arms on the Playstation was just plain FUN! It may not have been the best RPG, or even the most challenging by a longshot, but it was FUN! I love Meis and I though the battle system was unbelievable! I also really enjoyed the weapon upgrade system! All in all, 1000 Arms is just a good time!
4.) Final Fantsy VII. C'mon, this is on everyone's list and for good reason too! Whatever glowing endorsement others have given, probably says it all for me, so I wont comment in detail.
3.) Final Fantasy VI is probably the finest 2D RPG of all time, and in my opinion was just a bit better than VII, for the following reasons! Kefka is more evil than Sephiroth. The soundtrack is 8-bit majesty. More playable characters, and a classic story!
2.) Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne! Two words: Satanic Poke'mon...Nuff said.
1.) Xenogears! The most complex and layered stroy of any RPG before or since. Extremely well developed characters and it's groundbreaking style, though flawed, was so unique, that anyone who had a complaint about the bitmap sprites being "choppy", stopped caring after playing through it for about an hour! I dare anyone to play this game and say it is anything less than a masterpiece!
