    Worst location in a game?

Just as the title say. What is the worst location in any game you have ever played?

I was inspired to make this thread just now, while playing Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. While it is a great game, one location lets it down. The planet Felucia. Both times you go there.

I hate this location with an unrivaled passion. Not only are the enemies annoying as hell, but the obstacles do my head in, the tasks you have to achieve are tedious, and the boss at the end of your first visit (Shaak Ti) just doesn't seem worth the work (she is as easy as anything).

So I would like to know what you guys say.

Re: Worst location in a game?

Oh man... Probably the worst location I can think of in ANY game that I've played would be when I kept getting stuck on the twisting cylinder thing in the Carnival Stage of Sonic 3. I racked my brains trying to figure out how to make it out of there, but I never did come up with a solution. Pete told me how to get passed it not that long ago, and it was ridiculously easy! I don't have the game anymore though, so I can't feel the satisfaction of completing that damn level....

I hate defending that downed tank in Cod4, i dread having to do that every time i play that game. Reason is because there are enemies just everywhere, and they'll get behind you and itz just annoying..

Re: Worst location in a game?

A couple of places where there's a battle in the Uncharted games - first game in particular (plane crash area, the blue/water room, outside the church, inside the church, area before the final battle to name a few).

Also, the final level in LittleBIGPlanet when you have to make your way through those big, circular mazes which spin... and some platforms have electricity flowing through them. THEN you have to time it all right so that you can drop through the bottom of the maze when the exit passes the hole in the floor... which if you miss, you get electrocuted by the floor around the hole. That area sucked big time, especially when you lost all your lives and had to start from the beginning of the level.

Also... I hate the Isle levels in Tomb Raider Chronicles. Especially one of the first parts where you have to swing across the canyon area to a ledge you can't quite see, with two imps below you throwing rocks. Then you have to find items to make a torch to scare them off, which is a pain in the ass, because if you miss and throw the torch in the wrong direction (i.e. OFF THE DAMN CLIFF), then you've pretty much messed up... and will have rock throwing imps after you the whole level. And you'll most likely die. I have nightmares about those imps...

Also, I wasn't a huge fan of the VCI Headquarters in that game either. I never finished that game because it glitched on me, and I couldn't find the other half of the key to open at the end of the level. All that manoeuvring around security systems and personnel for nothing. =(

Final level in Tomb Raider Underworld was a pain too. I could NEVER find where I was supposed to go or climb or whatever. I just ended up improvising until I finally got it.

Umm... I also disliked the musical levels in Rayman. Where sliding around was a lot of fun at times, it could also be a pain in the butt when you over slide/shoot into a trap/enemy.

Also, many areas in Wild 9 where you had to use bodies to cross spikes. Half the time it didn't work like it was supposed to, and other times you didn't have enough bodies... and you'd die getting another one.

EDIT: Oh shit, totally forgot about The Temple of the Ancients in Final Fantasy VII. I HATE that place with a burning passion. The area with the stairs still gives me a headache to this day JUST by thinking about it, the area with the rolling rocks is irritating when you mess up one of them, and screw the bosses you encounter down there when you have lower levelled characters. =/

    My least favorite areas are:

    - Solomon Shrine from Ys II: that place is like a maze and all the pathways look the same. Took forever for me to figure out.

    - Fire Field from F-Zero (SNES) was a pain.

    - The Mana Temple in Sword of Mana was really confusing.

    - and screw this place

I know I have a lot, I just can't think of all of them.

The one place I will probably always dislike though, was Ogir Yensa Sandsea. It drove me banana sandwich, it's one of those places where I felt I had to motivate myself to get through because it's unnecessarily huge.

Yeah, i hate the temple too. Demon's Gate (the wall monster) seems to be hard no matter how strong your characters are. But i do like the dialogue with Tseng and Sephiroth though...

Anywhere in FF12. This is probobly one of the reasons i hate the game. For some reason the world just seems empty even the citys which is sad.

I'm not the biggest ff12 fan ether, but i thought the cities were full and vibrant. I never thought of the ff12 world as 'Empty'.

    FFVIII Research Facility

Area in Devil May Cry 3 (non collectors) where you fight all the bosses again (well, depends)

All the dungeons in FFIII where you have to be Mini or Toad.

I'm having a hard time remembering.

Re: Worst location in a game?

From off the top of my head:

The penultimate are in Resident Evil 5 (I think it's a boat?), on single player is torture even on the normal difficulty. When I did it on co-op I was not looking forward to it, but learned that a second person was stupidly more efficient than Sheva. That bitch.

Like Gemma, I really dislike both the spinning mazes in LittleBigPlanet (they honestly took me hours to pass), and the Ireland levels in Tomb Raider Chronicles, which actually led to me being unable to complete the game - even with a walkthrough.

ANY combat segment in Mirror's Edge qualifies for the worst location. One particular part had a large modern office made of glass which had computer servers in it. For a game that had an emphasis on non-combat aspects, defeating the 8+ enemies in here was ridiculous.

It's been years since I played Halo, but I do recall the library sequence making me suicidal.

Last night I was playing Runescape (no laughing), and I discovered that the Elemental Workshop is god-awful. The 'Body' section is almost impossible without a guide, being a huge and complicated sliding puzzle with odd control schemes.

I wanted to say something along the lines of this, but I was trying to be nice. I don't hate the game but a lot of the areas were a nuance to me only because a lot of them felt unnecessarily gigantic.

I'm not sure what it is but I always found myself getting tired of the places, and then eventually just rushing through to advance the story :s

The worst place ever was Chapter 6-3 in RE5. You have to fight off a group of Base Majini, then 2 Reapers, followed by 2 Gatling Gun Majini. It was a bitch, but once I got a Rocket Launcher and hit em with it I cleared it easy.

Re: Worst location in a game?

One that comes to mind in particular was the last mission of the Undead Campaign in Warcraft III. Enemy units coming from all directions, limited space and materials. Very limited space, in fact; there's hardly a wall between the enemy and the Portal. This might actually have been the most difficult stage in the game for me, aside from the last one (although that stage almost feels more manageable, with more space between you and the enemy. Two allies' bases, in fact.) Also didn't like the level in the human campaign where you have to kill villagers before the enemy can turn them into undead.

In A Link to the Past, I don't like the Desert Palace, or the 3rd, 4th, and 5th dungeons in the Realm of Darkness (forest dungeon, dungeon in the town, and the Ice Dungeon is the fifth one, right?) Maybe just from repetitive playing, the first three just got really old to me (and the third one can be a bit frustrating with the enemies, if I recall correctly.) The ice dungeon was just a bitch, though, with the slippery floors and such.

Never cared much for Midgar back in the day when I played FF7; was expecting a Fantasy setting, I guess, and thought, "What is this? This is dark and unpleasant, and the people are mean." Also, as someone put "anywhere in FF12 because it feels empty," I would almost say the same for FF13; nearly every place you go feels empty. There are hardly any NPC's to talk to, aside from when your party members are not part of your party, and there were hardly any areas to explore, making the world feel like a cross between an RPG and an on-rails shooter. Anyhoo...

I hated the Ice Dungoen, those floors were really annoying. But i didn't mind the Desert Palace, infact its prolly my 3rd favorite place in the game.

I didn't like the forest maze in ALttP when you get to the dark world part of it.

In DKC2 I hate those levels that have vines and thorns. Its really nerve-wrecking making your way through them.

Last one I'm going to list out for a worst location in a game will be the dark portions of Aether in Metroid Prime 2. Its funny how similar that game is compared to A Link to the Past in that aspect.

In LoZ: Twilight Princess, I hate the Desert Palace(Or the Arbiter Grounds, or whatever you want to call it.)... That place just gives me the creeps, and I just overall hate it.

And in Ocarina of Time, I hated the Water Temple. It's just so confusing... The Water Temple always tends to be one the of hardest temples...

In FFIX, I always hated the part at the beginning of the second disk, where you're going though Alexandria Castle, playing as Rusty and Marcus... I just didn't like running into those soldiers, because I always ended up loosing the battle against them... >.<

God that place is a bitch! I had to restart the level about a dozen times before I realized I could never do it. I just stopped there. IT'S RETARDED. For such an adorable game with cute little things all over the place, obstacles like that make it evil. GAH.

Some of the FFXII locations were pretty bad. Like the deserts. Holy hell, the deserts. I got so bored walking back and forth through them to complete missions. I don't even remember the names for them because every single one was the same: boring and hard to maneuver through. Even during rainy season for that one desert, the place is just as bad because you lose half of your walk-ways, and there are elemental things flying all over the place trying to rip your head off. Yeah. I can't beat them without sacrificing about five phoenix dawns, so any place with a bunch of those sucks.

Actually...now that I think about it, a lot of the FF places are bad. You always get large expanses of land or mazery to travel before getting to a boss so you get some experience and stuff, but those mazes are annoying...

Okay, so all the little stage things before you get to the boss (in ANY game), is the worst location ever. I hate being in those. Monsters pop up every other second, and the design is always confusing so you have to go around and around several times. Yuck.

Re: Worst location in a game?

Oh man, I could go on forever with a topic like this.

FF2: The whole Jade Passage -> End of game sequence, nothing less then like 12 bosses along with hard as hell (no pun intended) random regular battles. In fact, there were a lot of places like this in game, most of the final dungeons.hell, every dungeon in FF2 sucks, there I've said it.

FF3: Styx Tower, Dark World, Dark Knight Cave all ring bells to me. Styx Tower is a "point of no return" so be prepared or get buried. Dark World is the same, except even worse because the bosses are a massive jump in difficulty and if you're not stocked up then you will die no problem. DK Cave sucks because every time you physically hit a monster, (unless you are using the DK class which it sucks at best) they multiply and become an ever-increasing threat.

FF4: Tower of Bab-il, lots of bosses, boring overused dungeon with same layout from Barbaricca's dungeon, FuSoYa being a useless character, etc.

    FF5: Most of it.

FF6: Zozo, Magic Tower, Hidon Cave, Magitek Factory, Phoenix Cave...

FF7: That stupid jungle that I hated because it had to do with frogs and flies and it was annoying.

FF8: the Time Compression World. Seriously this game is stupid hard to follow at the end, I hate it.

FF9: when the world gets swallowed up in the mist and my dumbass waits until disc 4 to do all the chocobo sidequests

FF10: Though I wasn't a big fan of the game, I did like all the different areas that Tidus and crew travelled through, so kudos for SE to not make an area I hate in one game.

Any SMT game in any dungeon: *shudders* I swear I would rather play all of FF2 over again instead of doing any of these dungeons, theres only so many blind rooms/curse rooms/ warp rooms/no magic rooms/**** you rooms/etc that I can take before going crazy.

I had a lot of trouble there too. You couldn't believe how much time it took me to get out of that place. But imo FF12 is full of places like that.

Deserts tend to annoy me. Infact any desert in any game. Ughh.. That one at the end of BoF3 almost made me suicidal

I don't liek dungeons that need you to solve puzzles and shit to get out. Im no good with puzzles they wind me the **** up. Games like Broken Sword are best avoided when you are me. So when I have shit like this with random encounters and Im falling through trap doors, Im about ready to kill someone. Reminding me of BoF3 again and that STUPID bleeding plant place

Any kind of ****ing tower. Pharos can kiss my arse.

The Great ****ing crystal. Seriously. No ****ing map? DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG IT TOOK ME TO GET OUT OF THAT ****ING PLACE?!

Ooh the great ****ign glacier as well. **** YOU and your passing out bollocks. HAVE SOME COMMON ****ING SENSE AND TAKE A COAT. AND A FLASK OF SUMMAT WARM

Underwater levels. Seriously. Sonic and Mario have easily shortened my life expectancy with their water worlds. NOTHING strikes fear into my heart as much as that dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun, DUNDUNDUNSUNNNNNNNNN. JUSTGIVEMEANAIRBUBBLENOWWWWWWWWW

It's how utterly slowwwww you move as well, losing all your rings in slo-mo when you get hit by summat, or getting out of the water and falling back in, or having your frog suit for 5 ****ing seconds in mario 3 and some stealth jelly fish takes it right back off you. Trying to avoid them big man eating fish drives me insane as well. I always end up with wankers cramp mashing the jump button trying to get out of the water

I could go on all day....

Re: Worst location in a game?

I still hate Eggmanland Day Stage 1 from Sonic Unleashed. Evil level. Takes approximately 5097362746 tries just to memorize all the hazards.

The entire final battle of FFIII. No save point anywhere after entering Crycus Tower kills it for me.

Time Compression in FFVIII. Why bother exploring? You can't go anywhere or do anything. It's unnecessarily stupid.

Sandsea in FFXII. Misery and endlessness. Nuff said.

Its name escapes me, but that facility in FFXIII in Ch 10. The enemies are annoying, and the end-boss is super annoying.

Atlantica in KH2. This is just a complete culmination of fail.

There are probably tons more, but these are the ones that still loom over me even today.

    EDIT

Re: Worst location in a game?

Thanks for reminding me about the water levels in Mario, Lily. Though I don't hate the regular water levels in those so much as I friggen' hate the ones where the big fish is trying to swallow you. Actually, I pretty much dislike any Mario level where things are constantly jumping up from below at you, no matter where you are on the screen. Or from above, I guess (like those haunted house levels in Super Mario World where all the boos are hanging out up above and dive bombing at you constantly.) Those are rather stressful stages. And I generally didn't care for World Six in Super Mario 3, the Ice World (see a theme with me? Though I don't mind them as much in other Mario games...)

...and I will come right out and say that I didn't care much for the Arwing portions of the Star Fox Adventure game. They felt really tacked on (because they were.) And Star Fox Assault in general... although the stages that were the biggest pains in the ass in those were the all range levels where you needed to rescue your team mates. They'd fuckin' run away from you whilst yelling for your help! Then they'd go down, because you couldn't get to them in time. Stupid AI. Anyhoo...

Thats a little too far, imo. It was still a good game, despite the lack of exploration. It had a awesome junction system, great story, and cool yet diverse characters.

The junction system was alright, but the story was more farfetched than FF7's (which is saying a lot, coming from the cross-dressing schizophrenic main character), and cool yet diverse characters....?

More farfetched then ff7? WTF, They're both Final Fantasy games, are they supposed to be realistic? And personally thought they did a great job with the characters.

Not asking for a videogame to be realistic, but I would hope that it makes sense as far as story progression goes, which it did not at all. And personally I think the characters really suck and Square did a terrible job at making them and I can give you reasons and examples from the game, but your arguement is pretty sucky compared to mine so I'd rather not waste anymore time unless you care to respond.

Re: Worst location in a game?

None taken, I'm not trolling and I'll break it down for you on why FF8 is not as great of a game as one may think.

Spoilers ahead kiddies, dont read this post if you haven't beaten ff8 yet.

So even though I beat the game, I haven't replayed it in awhile and my memory might be foggy so bear with me. The game starts with Squall, a student at Garden, training and getting ready for some missions that he is deployed to do. Get sent out to fight some country, do some crazy assassination mission on a train, cool. Then the whole Sorceress Edea storyarc appears. Failed assassination attempt on her, Squall is seen in bad condition at the cliffhanger ending of disc one. Not bad, let's continue.

Disc two. Squall and crew escape prison with the help of some ginger Sonic the hedgehog characters that apparently know him. After escaping, one of the Gardens get missiled into charcoal, so while one team attempts to stop the ICBM's, Squall has to battle Garden's main shareholder/accountant aka NORG. wtf is this I dont even After the battle though, everything is okay because NORG's people apologize on his behalf for trying to overthrow the school. Its all gravy. Unfortunately the missiles were not stopped but it's k because Squall accidently caused the Garden to sprout wings and fly away from the disaster. I'm not kidding. After that, some forces invade the flying circus in search for a girl that has been sending Squall back in time via flashbacks to change the present. The oddities continue when upon going through the wreckage of the old garden that got blasted, everyone all realizes at once that they were all raised in an orphanage together by the Sorceress who Squall was told to assassinate.

Do you really want me to continue explaining why this story is dumb, or have you not figured it out for yourself yet?
