    Sad games

Anybody here play games that tug on the heartstrings? and which game did you think was really sad? The game I think was the saddest was Mother 3 for the GBA. All the events that happen in the game that force a change really was touching. Also, there are people who die in the game which also takes an emotional toll in the story.

This sums up how sad I thought M3 was (this is part of the ending btw)

    Re: Sad games

FFX was kinda sad for the ending. So was Persona 3, from what I hear. The first Alundra game was pretty depressing all around. I can't think of any others at this point, but those three games had the darkest themes/saddest endings that I can remember off the top of my head.

    Re: Sad games

Shadow of the Colossus. There wasn't any specific part that tugged at my heartstrings, but the entire game filled me with a sense of melancholy. The solitude the player is forced to experience combined with the lack of dialogue and explanation create such a swell of feeling that I find myself wanting to play the game when I'm feeling depressed, much in the same way I'd listen to depressing music or watch a depressing movie.

Heavy Rain had a similar effect, but it was more a feeling of gloom, and perhaps depression, than outright melancholy or sadness. The differences are minute, I know, but they exist.

    Uncharted 2.
    SPOILER!!:
When it seemed as if Elena was going to die, my eyes began to well up with tears. I'm not afraid to admit it. I was attached to those characters more than any others in a game and the thought of losing one was unbearable.

There were probably some scenes in Metal Gear Solid 4 that made me sad (there were so many scenes that the law of averages suggests SOME had to be depressing).

And Killzone 2. Because Rico didn't die at the end. That made me sad.

    Until now!

    Re: Sad games

Oh yeah, Mother 3 was terribly sad, I started playing the game, and one of the characters who you thought would be a main one, just goes out and dies. Then you see the reproccutions and you're like, Daum, I did not see that coming! Yes, it was quite sad.

I found the first Star Ocean kind of sad well, because again someone "dies" in the beginning, and you don't get to see them for a long time (at least I hope I get to see them again :S) but also throughout the game there are some more sad parts.

    Re: Sad games

I'm going to third Mother 3 and second Shadow of the Colossus. I honestly can't think of any other game that I've played that was just a sad experience other than those two. Yeah, there are some games I've played that have sad parts, but they're not just bogged down with them to probably count towards this topic. If I had to choose, I would say that Link's Awakening was pretty sad...but mainly just the ending...
    SPOILER!!:
Once you wake up the Dream Fish, the island and all the inhabitants disappear...

Another Zelda title crossed my mind that may fit with the topic: Majora's Mask. Haven't finished it (hehe...not even close...), but I hear that has some pretty depressing parts.

I agree. I found it a bit sad, more in a pitiful sense, that a lot of major characters were dead; Spira was a world of death so it fit perfectly.

One of the saddest games to me is Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII because I, and anyone, who has played Final Fantasy VII knows the outcome. So throughout playing the game, those of us know that Zack does not have much time left. Knowing what I did it made me want Zack to truly cherish every moment he had because of his "destiny". Crisis Core also shows the downfall of all the major 1st Class SOLDIERS ending an era of "greatness".

What the main character in Dragon Quest V is probably one of the saddest life stories for any RPG character. First, his mother "dies" at childbirth or shortly thereafter. As a young kid his father is killed and he is taken into slavery. After 10 years of enslavement he finally escapes with his friend who was also captured when the main character was. The main character gets a wife but just after she gives birth to twins, the main character and his wife are turned to stone and taken away. The main character ends up being bought by a man to be put in the front yard of his manor. There the player sees the children of the man grow up as the main character is stone, all the while thinking that the main character's children are growing up at this time as well.

    Re: Sad games

I seem to recall some other games had some sad parts in them. One of them was Ys I. Theres an oracle in the game named Sara and she ends up (depending on the console version) captured or killed. Either way, shes out of the picture forever. Another one was Ys IV. The main villain is a corrupt Celcetian and he and a girl name Eliza were really close and Eliza is the only woman who was allowed to even visit the person and she was betrayed by him and she was pretty sad about the way he was acting. It was a pretty touching story. Another few RPGs that were touching are Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma. In IoG things were rapidly changing due to a comet approaching the earth forcing evolution. In Terranigma the ending was pretty touching when you find out why you were out to resurrect the surface world and then something else happens.

What about it made you sad? Divulge to us this information, please.

I was thinking about this the other night, and there weren't a lot of games that really made me sad. There were parts of games that were kinda sad. Like FF6, most of the main characters' development/back stories involved a lot of sadness; Locke, Celes, Gau, Cyan, etc. Chrono Cross gave me a melancholy feeling as well,
    Spoiler:
Serge and Kidd having to go their separate ways at the end, the events of Chrono Trigger having a terrible effect on the universe apparently, and also, Harle was my favorite character, so the fact that she couldn't really control her roll in the story and was more or less forced to be your enemy at the end kinda sucked.

Can't think of anything else right now, though I know I've played more like that. Anyhoo...

Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon.

I haven't even played that long, I played for maybe 2-3 hours. Now, I admit I'm the type to cry easily, but this got me really good. A few times even! But really, one of the saddest moments I've ever seen in a game.

I really need to get back to playing it.

    Re: Sad games

The saddest games I have played has to be Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core. I knew Zack dies at the end but I grew so attached to him while playing Plus the way it played out was done really well. Also Final Fantasy X was the other. The ending was pretty sad as well, although Crisis Core was the only game to make me actually tear up FFX got me close. Both were great games though.

This is where my name comes from for anyone who cares. Btw please don't get the wrong idea. I love Final Fantasy more than any other game series in the whole world.

But don't be sad! He awakens to find Hyrule in shambles and re-equips himself and continues the legend!

I would say Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits. Mainly Volk, as he is my favourite, but his wife and baby son are killed by a human, and he barely got away with his life, but he managed to take out the human. Unfortunately, their deaths haunt him and he never seems to get past it. The others also have a sad story, but I don't feel like listing them all. However, upon request I would.

Agreed. I was actually in tears because

Shadow of the Colossus. The whole game tugged at my heart strings, but nothing more so than the battles. When you finally reach the weak point of one of the Colossi, and you do a fully charged stab, and the blood just squirts out of them, and they scream and attempt to shake you loose, I felt horrible. I didn't want to kill them, and every battle for me was even more emotional than the last. There was one or two exceptions, like the one in the coliseum and the flying one... maybe even the one with the geysers.

I think the music played a huge part in the emotions too.

With all the Metal Gear Solid games, I've cried at some point.
    SPOILER!!:
I cried at the end of the first game because Meryl died because I failed the torture scene. I cried when Hal's sister was killed. I cried when I thought Eva was going to die. I cried during the final boss battle in MGS3 - that was one of the most epic boss battles ever.

I've not finished MGS4 yet though...

Heavy Rain. I couldn't help but get emotionally attached to the characters. When Jason died at the start, I felt the pain his parents felt.

I also cried during the scene before the final boss battle in Dark Cloud.

InFamous wasn't sad, but I was a bit defensive when my choice lead to Trish dying...

And at FFVII, FFVIII, FFX, FFXII, FFXIII.

I think I'm going to say Crisis Core aswell. Not only the fact you know that Zack is going to die, but also that you have to be him as he dies. It's like you want to fight as best as you can to delay his death. To me, it is the saddest part of any game I have ever played in my life.

It is also really sad in GTA 4 when:
    Spoiler:
Depending on whether you do the deal with Dimitri or have you revenge, Roman or Kate will die at Roman's wedding. It's especially sad if you do the deal, because Roman is the one who dies.
