Not to undermind Sony's thinking, but I do think a major reason they released MvC2 in the first place was because it was also on the Xbox Live market for download as well. They probably did it to keep up with their competition. Plus, MvC2 was first developed for the MAME Arcade system, not for PS2. Even then it was released first on the Dreamcast.

They released MvC2 because both they and Capcom wanted to make money. What does Microsoft have to do with that?
This is a possibility, but I still don't understand the reasoning. They have PS1 games on PSN already, yet ALL PS3s still have PS1 backwards compatibility. So I don't get why only PS2 games would have to be repurchased.

If Capcom just released mvc2 on xbl, it could cause a demand for more people to buy xboxes so people could get a chance to play mvc2. If Capcom didn't release mvc2 on the psn then people would be more inclined to get a 360. You follow me?
And the highest demand for Marvel vs Capcom 2 was on the original xbox because there were fewest copies made for it. The reason there were few copies made was because the game was already out on the DC and the PS2 a significant time beforehand, and then once people started to realize how great a game it was, people bought it, there was a demand, and prices shot way up. Sony would have released MvC2 over PSN whether Microsoft had it or not. They wanted to make money. It wasn't a reaction to Microsoft. It was the introduction of a product into a market.
Those of us that own all 3 of the consoles make games even more popular.

And, the ps2 got the game in november whereas MvC2 didn't get the game until the following march, so thats 5 months difference in marketing and production timeframe. Though I don't know or won't claim to know whether this could create a huge effect or not for the different markets, it is safe to say that the xbox had significantly less time to sell copies compared to the ps2 version. All of that is irrelvant anyways, because imo the best version of the game was on the Dreamcast, so everyone loses because Sega is dead to all of the world

I personally bought a slim 250gb not too long ago and love it, its far quieter than my friends console thats about the size of a desk. Never really factor in backwards compatibility into buying consoles, unlike some people I actually have the energy to plug my old console in when i want to play a game on it XD... it takes a whole 30 seconds afterall
