PS3 Slim?

As some of you have have probably heard, it seems all but confirmed that Sony is going to release a slimmer version of it's PS3 console, and it will most likely include the price cut we've been hoping for.

What do you guys think? Will this be enough for you to finally buy a PS3?

I hope it wont screw up any of the PS3s awesome features or cause the infamous overheating problem that came with the slimmer PS2.I would definatley get it if nothing was deducted from the performance.

Happens with every new revision of the PS3.
PS3 slim'll probably have no blu ray drive like the PS3 GO has no UMD drive forcing you to buy PS3 titles through a new online service, devised to combat the impact of most game places making most of their money from pre-owned games.

I don't really think this'll happen, but I wouldn't be surprised.
Expect one more less USB port or the loss of PSX compatibility or something similar.

That's ridiculous. PS2 compatibility was removed so PS2s would still sell. Obviously PSXs are not still available in stores so there would be absolutely no reason to scrap it. The two USB ports and flash drive on the other hand, well it's just impossible to please you people; you complain that the PS3 costs too much money, but then complain when they take away relatively unnecessary features in an attempt to keep the cost as low as they can afford (while desperately trying, but failing, to keep it profitable).

We know nothing of the slim yet, including whether it's even real or not, so there's no reason to assume that it will be missing any additional features. It's just a matter of more cost efficient (as well as space efficient) technology becoming available. Sony may screw it up, they're good at that, but I really don't see how. We'll see what happens at Gamescom or, failing that, Tokyo Game Show.

I don't complain about the price as I have this stuff called money, damn useful stuff. I do complain about the loss of features with every new revision making my launch model seem infinetely better than any later PS3 and worth the extra money I spent.

Oh and I was right, something else did go. The ability to install alternative Operating Systems, which was fortunately not that big a loss as Linux didn't run all that well on it as a desktop anyways. Only thing I really lost was the ability to run emulators, but I have Wii's VC and a GP2X Wiz for that.

I doubt making a slimmer PS3 will make it any different in what it can do. Just like when they did it to the PS1 and PS2. People would tell me with the slimmer Ps2 it couldn't play FFX and other games with high graphics but that is just BS. The slimmer PS3 will make it more affordable for everyone. This is honestly the best move they made so far with the PS3 IMO.

I'm with Jin, Sony has had fairly valid reasons for stripping extra features on the PS3. Also the PS2 backwards compatibility can easily be solved with emulation software on the PS3. It will probably be a pricey download, seeing as how Sony is actually turning a profit on the PS2.

Also, considering Sony's past reputation with rumors, I would be completely surprised if this rumor weren't true.

People were complaining that the PS3 was too expensive, Sony was (and last I heard, still is, even on the slim) losing money on each sale. It makes sense for them to reduce their loss (and as a result, the flexibility of their price point) by removing features that are relatively insignificant - features that its competition doesn't offer, I might add.

And I very much like being able to run emulators on devices that actually support homebrew as opposed to doing it via dodgy means.

No, but I did buy one. I thought it would save space, but as it stands it doesn't really get used.
I later bought a custom case that's refrigerated and houses both the internals of my 360 and launch PS3. Pretty snazzy, no?

i have the original 80 gig backwards ps3 and also bought the new slim, i actually keep on in a different room and typically just use my older one as a ps2. i dont really mind having 2 ps3s, its not like i couldnt afford it.

Well, for one, no red rings of death that block your ability to play at all... oh, and free online gaming is nice, contrary to what I said about it months earlier.

I dunno, I think I'm jaded after my 360 red-ringed for the 3rd time. I'm still partial to the 360 gaming wise, but since my 360 may as well be a 7-pound paperweight, I'm digging my PS3 at the moment.

As for the Slim, I don't like it. It's great to have the option of a smaller console, seeing as the PS3 fat is the size of a small car, but something about the PS3 fat's sleekness endears it to me.

well it wasnt cheaper for me,because i decided to buy the bundle with FFXIII which cost me about 700 to import, but it was worth it. its so beautiful (white with lightening on it in pink)
not to mention its 250 gb

Read about it in some fanboy wars and my thoughts were rather happy as even though it costs money it adds most of the stuff missing from XBL. Including cross game chat which is something I sorely miss playing the PS3.

I heard it was announced by Sony. From what I understand, online play will still be free to all users, but premium has several additional features. The list wasn't exactly short.

EDIT: Does FFXIII seem any good based on the bundled jap version you got?
I haven't seen much of it at all.

You were. Unless you are not a person, you're part of "you people". Sony had a choice, find a way to lower the price of the system or keep it as is at its price point. As you have proven, people will complain either way. Lowering their cost and thus the price made a lot more business sense though as your particular complaints are a minority when compared to people that wouldn't buy a $400 system.

Your PS3 came with a flash drive? None of mine did, though any USB drives I have can be connected to both my 360s and PS3s.
And apart from my launch PS3, all the newer ones seem to only have two USB ports exactly like my 360s. So, the PS3 has what now over the 360?

Exactly why I bothered buying a PS3 at all. The handful of good exclusives.
Well two handfuls as of now, but still not that many I play the PS3 regularly.
As for why I bring up the 360, it's the competition and very valid to bring up for comparitive reasons. The Wii, not so much as it's on another level. As a serious gamer, I do compare current consoles constantly, and the day I see the PS3 overtake it's competition is the day my loyalties will swap. Better than fervently worshipping one console.

A) The PS3 is not more expensive. Both premium models cost $299 and with the built in wifi in the PS3, the argument could be made that it's cheaper. If the price is different in your country, that's just your country.
B) The current lack of backwards compatibility is both stupid and unfortunate and shouldn't be the case, but if you're buying a console chiefly so you can play the games its predecessor console had, you may as well save the money and just keep using the older console or buy the older console.

I figure if I bitch about the Playstation's gaming qualities, maybe others will start noticing problems and bitching too, eventually bringing it to Sony's attention. Unfortunately, many sony fans wear rose tinted lenses so it may never happen. Translation: you're a fanboy. You're not just critiquing Sony, but deliberately propping up Microsoft in the process in an attempt to prove to those that prefer the PS3 over the 360 that they are wrong. At the same time, you take out your own rose tinted lens anytime someone counters with a critique of the 360 (even though they shouldn't have to as this is a thread about the PS3 slim model, not about which console is better). Each console has its strengths and weaknesses, but you don't address them equally: you only address the weaknesses of the PS3 and the strengths of the 360. That is not useful critique, it's a fanboyish rant.

Playstation fanboys are without a doubt the most militant and obnoxious fanboys out there, but they have one thing going for them: they almost always are aware that they're fanboys. That's the funny thing about Xbox fanboys: they rarely realize how asinine they are.

Just play the games. Mass Effect 2 comes out soon so just chill out and be happy. Neither company has earned so much loyalty that you should go on a crusade against their competition at no pay.

They did indeed patent a PS2 emulator a few months back, though I'm still not certain what for. I originally assumed that it was for the return of backwards compatibility as well, but if that were the case, I think we would have seen it by now. Coupling it with the new price point/slim model would have given them a chance to dominate the holiday season. Sony's stupid like that; who knows.

They're Japanese, they don't have to make sense.
