    Kotaku write up

It's been ten years since the characters of Marvel's comics and Capcom's video games faced off in a fighting title, so 2011's Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds can't come soon enough.

The title, which will likely feature more than 30 characters to choose from and feature 3-on-3 tag team fighting, hits the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in spring 2011. There currently are no plans for an arcade, computer or Wii version of the title, Capcom tells Kotaku.

"I'm really excited to be here so that I can share this information with you today," Ryota Niitsuma, the game's producer, told a room of journalists gathered last week in Hawaii for the game's unveiling.

Like Capcom's popular Street Fighter IV, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 will feature 3D characters fighting on a 2D plane, he said. The game won't, however, use the same sort of graphics found in Street Fighter IV and Super Street Fighter IV. Instead Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 will run on an "advanced version" of MT Framework, the same engine that powers the graphics of Lost Planet 2 and Resident Evil 5.

"Each version of MT Framework gets better than the previous version," Niitsuma said. "A lot of key staff are involved with this game and they wanted to use the engine they are more comfortable with."

Chris Baker, the manager of licensed games at Marvel Studios, said he was astounded to see the concept art for Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 and said that in action it's just as amazing, calling the title a "beautiful, beautiful game."

Baker pointed out that Wolverine's look in the game hearkens back to the classic look of the beloved character. Iron Man, on the other hand, fits his contemporary look and The Hulk has a new visual style.

The shaders used on each character, Capcom's Seth Killian said, are what really make all of the characters so visually distinct in motion. Even Capcom's Ryu, he pointed out, is brought out in a new way with the help of the shaders.

"You could see him sitting in a comic book frame," Killian said, "and maybe one day you will."

The game will also have an eclectic and robust mix of music, with at least 100 pieces including remixes of favorites from previous Marvel Vs. Capcom games as well as some new music.

"It's all about having a lot of content and things to go with this game," Niitsuma said. "We also want to make sure the music suits the type of game this is."

And the music needs to suit the characters as well, Baker added.

While news of a new version of Marvel Vs. Capcom was highly anticipated leading up to Capcom's annual event last week (Baker said it was one of the questions most often asked of him and the hardest secret he's had to keep since working at the comic company), the presentation was light on details about which characters would make the cut for the game.

The gameplay-free trailer shows that Wolverine, the Hulk, Iron Man, Street Fighter's Ryu, Darkstalker's Morrigan and Resident Evil's Chris Redfield will be in the game. It also hints at the appearance of Captain America, Super Skrull, Chun-Li, Deadpool, Felicia, Dante or Nero, Spencer or Wesker, Mephisto, Rad Spencer and Doctor Doom. The inclusion of Redfield in the game is indicative of the direction the game's developers are headed in terms of Capcom character selection, Killian said.

While the game could certainly support any number of characters, Niitsuma said that time constraints led the team to shoot for a bit more than 30 characters in the game.

While downloadable content for the game, most likely new characters, is certainly possible, no DLC plans have yet been locked in, said Capcom's Seth Killian.

"There are a couple of different directions they're thinking about," he said.

And unlike previous Marvel Vs. Capcom games, this latest iteration will have a strong storyline.

"It's important that game's have strong stories for Marvel," Baker said. "With fighting games it's not as essential as an action game or role playing game but we are very much insisting there be some cohesive kind of story for this game.

"We actually have a subtitle for the game that means something this time. In the coming months we will be giving you more information about it."

Ooh, this should be good. I enjoyed the other 2 MVCs despite the fact I've never actually owned them. Are we going to see spectacular new special moves in this new fighting game? and has it been official what some of the appearing characters will be on there?

WOOHOO! I wonder how different the game is going to feel now that it uses 3-D graphics. I can't believe they are finnaly making a sequel after ten years! (it reminds me of the sequel to NiGHTS) They were probably motivated to do so because of the sales of the re-release Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Anyway, the game looks awesome and I can't wait to play it!

I never really updated this topic for E3, and now with media from Comic Con coming in, figured it was overdue.

CHARACTER THEMES ARE BACK! HELL YEAH! SUPERIOR SOUNDTRACK CONFIRMED! Seriously, Chun-Li's theme actually sounds even better than the remix from TvC.

And maybe I'm mishearing it, but it really sounds like Deadpool says ANIME POWERUP SHIT near the end of the video

If he actually is saying that, that'd be awesome. Slightly related, but he is probably the character I am looking the most forward to using as of right now. His comic is the only one I read right now (aside from the Archie Sonic comic...) Wonder if I'll get really excited about anyone else... Anyway...

I saw gameplay of this during EVO 2010 this year, the game looks legit. I can't wait to play me some Dante, that's for sure haha. My heart (and main character) will always be with Robert Downey Jr though.

Trish is from Devil May Cry (games and an Anime). I really not familiar with the series, but with this, I might just pick up that trilogy collection for PS2.

If he actually is saying that, that'd be awesome.
I've downloaded the vid and played it in Slow motion. Unless he's saying something awkward like Anime Power Upshift. But best thing about Deadpool, are his awesome animations

And BREAKING NEWS. Had to tell our resident Okami fangirl first, but it looks like Marvel decided to slip two new character reveals early. Only screenshots right now but,

^ That right there just made the game an insta-buy for me when it's released. Hope that there's video footage of how she plays in the game soon. Not that it really matters since I'm now set on getting it, but I just want to check it out.

Also, that Deadpool animation vid made me chuckle. It was awesome. xD

That was both unexpected and funny. Unexpected that capcom added the character from okami in the game and funny that it actually happened. This sure will be an interesting game to play. I hope either Zero makes an appearence in this game or Megaman X because that would be awesome.

I love all the Deadpool animations, he is one of my favorite characters so glad to see that they did all his animations so well. Love the moonwalk and swagger when he's approaching haha. I also like Dante, man his looks like a bad ass from the fight that I saw him in, did like a 20 hit combo that started on the ground and finished in the air. Epic game.

    AWWWWW YEEEAAAAHHHHH!!!!!

There's a video that showcases what Ammy can do in the game! And here it is!

Oh, and here's one of Thor if anyone is interested in it. Only gonna link it, because I don't want it to distract from the Amaterasu goodness! (Sorry Thor fans...).

And here's one of them together (with other fighters). Again, it's in link form. Enjoy!

Daaaaaamn, Ammy looks great, and is that Issun I hear, in English? It's weird because you can also hear him in Thor's (but not in the gameplay vid). No idea what's going on there.

BTW, Gamersyde has full HD Videos at 60fps (much smoother than Youtube's 30fps) and artwork for download

Re: Marvel vs Capcom 3: The Fate of Two Worlds - Are you ready, True Believers?

I'll just say one thing: if Capcom finally allows one of the Breath of Fire characters as a playable fighter in MvC3, I'll definitely drop a motherload of quarters just to get acquainted with the game.

    First and foremost: DEADPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!

While the big news seems to be Thor and Ammy, the one point that really caught me was Deadpool. Now I've seen everything.

(I also heard a rumor that the JP voice actor of Deadpool was Nobutoshi Canna. If so, that makes me doubly happy!)

Something I noticed from the vids: it seems that Dante and Deadpool have a similar move set, with various differences (Dante uses more acrobatic styles and swords while Deadpool uses more guns and teleportations). Still, the "Jackpot!!" and the "BANG...BANG, BA-BA-BANG, BANG!!!" super moves are almost carbon copies of each other.

Also, Iron Man's Proton Cannon looks pretty. Too bad the second super move was removed for an AA Proton Cannon...
Delivering scathing wit as a Rogue using Sneak Attack.

Pester me on the Giant in the Playground Forums if you really need me.

    The Final Boss Theorem:
The size of the ultimate form of the final boss is inversely proportional to it's chances of actually beating your party. If you agree with this, please copy and paste this valuable piece of info on your sig. AND, if you're evil and villainous...never settle for a big form when a smaller form is more kickass...

'Tis a shame I can only place names now...:
Silver, Omnitense, Govinda, Aerif, Meier Link,
(whatever is the name of) The Stig, Grizzly, Fishie,
Craven, Spiral Architect, Flash AND Froggie.

    Spaces still available. Join today!!

Re: Marvel vs Capcom 3: The Fate of Two Worlds - Are you ready, True Believers?

Not quite 100% confirmed, but no "red flags" seem to be going off as far legitimacy. Seems weird we haven't got a full scan so late in the week. But, there's two different cam shots which have shown up Don't even know what magazine it's from

    http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/3359/scanld.png

basically what the article is is a look at the history of the fantastic four + an interview with ryota niitsuma where he discusses the influence of fantastic four within marvel vs capcom 3.

niitsuma runs through the playable fantastic four cast of doom, skrull, and he talks about silver surfer, who will be shown off later this month. there are no screens of him, just a little portrait thing along with the other two.

nothing new really about doom, but niitsuma said they've added a lot more attacks to skrull since the last public build including several invisible woman techniques.

silver surfer is very quick and has a unique playstyle. he is never standing on the ground. he is always hovering on his board. niitsuma said that silver surfer is more of a character to be played by advanced players. he recommends dr doom to fantastic four fans who are new to the vs series.

also, niitsuma said the fantastic four play a major role within the basic plotline of arcade mode, and that the final boss should be familiar to fans of fantastic four.

I can confirm Doom and Skrull, as I've seen gameplay footage of them.

And the final boss is like.. Dr Doom fused with another character from capcom. Or perhaps two antagonists from either side fused together. I forget.

I doubt the combos will be that much different from previous titles. You hit them 2-3 times, launch them in the air, do another 4-5 hits and if you are fast enough, a couple more when they hit the ground. Half the time the skills aren't even used in battles when you just combo someone to death. Although skills do help for combos. (Like the awesome Gambit combo of death)

the button input for launching into air combos is different now, and from what I watched at EVO 2k10, the specials were mostly being used to finish out the air combo, kinda like how Spiderman can launch then finish with an aerial spider swing, Omega red with his aerial throw, etc. Still the same premise though.

Here's to hoping there will be more interesting gamebreaking strategies like Magneto's double snapback to launcher infinite again!!

EDIT: and holy hell I just got done watching that video of some Ameratsu gameplay, that doggie's flaming hair has some nice range and priority on her, she will be able to play footsie games with the best of them I bet.

Meier: Hey Pete, I said I started to, it just didn't end the with the same number of women. Then again this one is kind of on the outs with me if she doesn't straighten up and fly right so that means I will be back in it for the thrill of the kill. Got some in the reserves. Even got a rePETEr (<---- like that ay? AYYYYY?) on the back burner.

Block: I do like the rePETEr except it kinda makes it sound like you're going to pork Pete. No homo.

I think I just found my second!

It was officially announced that Viewtiful Joe from...well...the Viewtiful Joe series...will be in the line-up for playable fighters in this game! Ive been reading rumors that he'll be in there, but now it's confirmed!

Oh, and some guy named Dormammu is in as well.

Viewtiful Joe? really? The games were alright but, i didn't think he was a worthy fighter. He was in Tatsunoko but nah I'm looking past that character. The other character looks more interesting to play. Hopefully besides those, there will be some characters that I'd actually would want to play as in-game.

Yep, they confirmed though, that while Ammy's short height makes her hard to hit, her body length leaves her extra vulnerable to juggles.

And I just hope we get some new footage soon (we should be getting it hopefully tonight or by the end of the week at the latest). Hopefully an "Episode 2" trailer with some stylish Ammy vs Thor action courtesy of Polygon Pictures.

Oh and I was going to wait and be sure, but it looks like that Silver Surfer + Galactus bit may have been a cruel, but convincing hoax :/

Joe can pull of 25+ hit combos in Tatsunoko, he is one of the best characters in that game, adding him to MvC3 is even better.

Anyways...I hear Silver Surfer is for advanced players only, but Doom will be for noobs.

With all that being said, Joe is replacing my Strider.

The lord of the dark dimension is no match for Capcom's Sun Goddess

A few cool moves shown throughout.

Haha.. That was great. I loved Ammy's finisher at the end of the first vid, and DANG! Joe looked awesome there as well! He kind of got his butt handed to him in the second one though...

Dormammu looks like he'll be a challenge to face if people use him right... He had some pretty wicked moves in both the vids.

Still looking for a third, but I suppose that can wait til the actual game comes out.
