TBH I've always thought those characters looked incredibly asian, with the exception of Mario. I mean, it was hard to tell with Link in A Link from the Past, but even in Ocarina of Time I thought he was asian, and he looks incredibly asian in Twilight Princess. Solid Snake definitely looks asian to me, and most Final Fantasy characters. It's hard to tell before FF7, but with the non-sprite characters (cutscenes and battle characters), they look asian to me.
Samus is questionable I suppose, as I haven't seen her in much (except SSBB which I played for 5 seconds). But it's not her blonde hair that makes it questionable.
Cloud= 1 not most
Someone already brought up the point that lots of Japanese games with "clearly Caucasian characters aren't even released in the US.
Is there even a way to distinguish between Caucasian skin and Asian skin? maybe they should just make all their characters have yellow skin so we know for sure they're asian
I don't think anyone is offended it just seems slightly silly when you think about Japanese character design in general. it's easy to assume all characters are white because from what you say
For caucasian. What happens when blue, pink and silver hair are thrown in? the only thing you can really go off of is the hair. If their eyes aren't slanted then they must be white.white, with blonde, red, brown hair...it's just a sterio type

PS2 and backwards is even worse because you REALLY cant tell what anyone is. That's mainly the field I play in btw so you're judging from polygons. I can't even tell the difference between Yuffie skin tone (Asian) and Cloud during the game.

How many girls have you met that dye their hair blonde and wear blue contacts?
Probably 0 I'd guess with your attitude.
ps
and
etcMost models of eye inheritance postulate that there are 3 genes involved
in eye color determination and that brown eyes are dominant while blue eyes
are recessive so that if one has an allele (a version of a gene ) that
determines brown eyes that person
will have brown eyes. To have blue eyes you must have two blue eye alleles.
It is possible for 2 brown eyed people (both carrying the recessive blue
eye allele) to have blue-eyed children. In fact it is not rare. It is
also possible for blue eyed alleles to be carried for several generations
without having blue eyed people until 2 people with blue eyed alleles
marry. It is not thought that eye color affects vision unless
one has no eye pigmentation such as albinos in which case they do have
visual problems.

Here you go. Just for you.
But yes.. it's extremely hard to judge what race a character is if you're going by PS2 and older. Especially older when they're sprites.

I'm actually more surprised of the lack of black characters in videogames. Honestly the FF series has the majority on that as far as I know with Barret, Kiros and Sazh, but like how many other rpgs have any of you played with one of the main or supporting characters having a black descent?
Also, I'm a little appalled by the amount of dickery coming from this thread, with all of it from the older members. Way to go guys.

hahas, updated July 28th (oldie but goodie!):
Did you read any of the discussion? Haha. Soulja Boy went to Japan, why isn't he in a videogame?

I migrated to Japan so I am japanese now.
I migrated there with thousands of other caucastion people. We did this 15 years ago just before the video game industry started booming. A lot of us couldnt speak japanese, so in order to make a living, we modelled for the design and become the very foundation for most characters in Video games and Anime.
question asked, Question answered. Lets close the thread, mods?
Edit:
this doesnt happen to be true, in fact. Just had to add that in because Victoria had a cry.

I understand about wanting to close the thread because of the heated discussion..
But are you really going to spout nonsense that isn't even true? I'm sure Americans and other Gaijin moved to Japan, I'm not doubting that.
But to be the source? I don't think so. And no, just cause you live in Japan, doesn't make you Japanese. You're still Australian. Sorry charlie. Things don't quite work that way.
I'm also pretty sure that the Video game industry boomed way before 1996.
Edit: No, I did not have a cry. I called you out on BS. There's a difference. Also, it is not your thread to close... It's Djinn's. If you don't like where the thread is going, don't read it or post it in anymore.
Like the old saying goes. "If you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen."

Starfighter, I understand that you're trying to defend the topic. Which is all well and good. BUT in doing so you've, prolonged a meaningless debate which hasn't got anything to do with the OP. You don't deserve a ban either. Which is offtopic again...
Now, no one is accusing anyone of prejudice in this thread, or calling anyone a racist. Just opinions. Victoria's opinion was that it doesn't really make a difference to her so she doesn't care. There's nothing wrong with that at all. I feel the same way, and also because I've never thought about it - mainly because to me, it really doesn't matter. I wouldn't say they were 'clearly Caucasian' either, if I'm honest. To me, it's just a type of art style that displays a human form.
@OP Solid Snake, maybe so, but I recall his character being a member of FOXHOUND which IS a US Special Force unit; most likely candidate would be Caucasian. So I don't think that counts. =S
If you believe that, you are an absolute fool. It was my comical answer to a thread thats gone out of control. I honestly believe I'm being trolled right now. I could only envision an overweight Gothic girl listening to lacuna coil looking at her high school diploma as she tries to look sound intelligent and cultured in her posts and being condescending toward pretty much anyone who wont agree with her.
and to give me negative feedback for trying to bring things to a close with some comical relief (as if you would even believe that) , is incredibly poor taste.

Ahem. May I remind you that this is the internet, and a text based forum. Not all humor or sarcasm can be directly seen or interpreted immediately.
I'm not even trolling you at all. I didn't know you were being funny. I thought you were being serious.
Also, I'm going to be 27 in a few weeks, thank you. Although you nailed the Gothic on the head..
But anyways. I don't think I've really ever been extremely condescending or crass in this topic. I've remained calm throughout. (At least I believe.)
If anything, the way you are acting, no offense, is what you are describing. Being rude to people who do not agree with your views. But that is just my observation, I could be wrong.
I will, however, admit that this topic has gone somewhat out of hand. Actually it was rather out of hand since the very beginning of the topic.
But yes, to reiterate: Humor is not always crystal clear when it comes to text. Especially if you don't use anything to notate it with.
My apologies if anything I said happened to goad you at all. It wasn't my intention.
Kay, I'm closing this thread for a little while. It's getting a little too heated for my tastes, and people need to chill out. Starfighter was warned for trolling.I would also say that if encountering someone who you think is trolling you, it would be a good idea to stop responding to him.
Maybe I'll open this back up again later. Anyhoo...
