Is it hard for you to beat rpgs nowadays?

I was recently trying to finish my 6th playthrough of EarthBound and i lost at the final boss. I think I lacked some reviving items and whatnot and I'm also nearly finished with FFVI but my characters need training before kefka's tower. Maybe I don't have the patience anymore?

do you guys suffer the same problem whether its an rpg you've beat before or an rpg that is your first time playing?

Nope, I don't have that problem. If you can't beat something, just grind and level up. (Depending on the type of game, anyway...)

And if you have to train before the tower, go train. Nothing wrong with that.

Yeah I admit I have a lot less patience with RPGs than I did, say, 5 years ago but my free time is constricted so thats probably a huge factor. The only new JRPG I have completed within the past two years is Persona 4. With the rest I usually reach the last boss, loss, then give up to never go back. I never get frustrated with the pre PS2/Xbox generation games though as I know those too well to get stuck and frustrated.

    If you reach the last boss and lose, just grind until you can beat it or try something different. Might as well since you're at the end. >_>;

I think you're missing the point, Victoria. He's asking if it is harder to do that now, as opposed to some time in the past. Perhaps you have less patience, or less time, to grind than when you were a thirteen-year-old.

I certainly have less time to play games. It's not harder for me to complete them, it just takes more time (not in-game time; but I'll be playing one game over a longer period of real time -- months instead of weeks, for instance).

Re: Is it hard for you to beat rpgs nowadays?

Why I brought up the fact I give up after losing badly to last bosses( or other bosses, for example the marathon run of bosses at the end of the 1st disc of The Last Remnant) is that a few years ago, I would have had no problem giving up 3 or 4 hours of my time grinding levels or doing side quests for better items or weapons to beat one particular boss. Now since my time is constricted I would prefer to get much further in another game than spend so many hours just trying to complete one part of another. See it as an example of the economic principle of oppurtunity cost.

I don't have problems beating games usually. If I do then I will put hours upon hours into level grinding, then I kick ass..

Re: Is it hard for you to beat rpgs nowadays?

I find it easier to beat RPGs these days. When I was younger I had a lot of trouble beating them but these days I don't really have any trouble at all. But then again I tend to do a lot more exploring and hitting up every little detail that I can these days than I did back then. So it ended up meaning that I'm better prepared now a days compared to the past. The only game I had trouble with was FFXIII and that I was mostly I think because I got too focused on the story and ended up under-leveled.

Re: Is it hard for you to beat rpgs nowadays?

Within the last 2 years, I have found myself beating RPGs faster and better then I did when I was younger. I'm not sure what happened but it also happened on a few MMOs I played. I stoppedp laying for awhile then I came back and dominated.

Jin's pick for best TFF sentence of 2010.

    ---------------

The only RPGs I've had difficulty beating lately are the newer Final Fantasy games because they bore me to death. I never did finish 12 and I've no intention of finishing 13.

Other than that, business as usual. So long as the RPG engages me, I have no problem beating it. They're not particularly difficult these days, so it really only takes willpower to overcome them. Demon's Souls is the obvious exception to this.

Oh, I should probably also note that although I've already beaten New Vegas, I'm having difficulty getting 100% as the game is horrendously glitchy. For no particular reason, the game freezes anytime I fast travel to or go near the Strip. I read that this is a common problem that can be fixed by wearing an old cowboy hat. As retarded as that sounds it actually worked. The only problem is I don't want to wear that ugly pimp hat. So I placed it on the ground in the Strip and it worked just lying there, but now all of a sudden again, freezing! Perhaps it disappeared? Either way it's one of those slumping face - turn off the console moments. So we'll see when I get around to continuing that.

Re: Is it hard for you to beat rpgs nowadays?

I don't find RPGs to be hard, but I am finding that it's harder to put aside large enough chunks of time to put into any given game. Some, like XIII, have save points everywhere and that's a godsend. Unfortunately, not every RPG is like that, especially older games. Not being able to save in the sprawling, boss-infested dungeon areas really kills it for me. I'll grind if I have to/feel like it but it does get pretty boring. That's usually the point where I'll put down a game and stop playing it entirely for months at a time.

I find I'm actually starting to favor more action/adventure type games because they're easier to pick up and play for an hour or two and they usually have good stories in their own right.

Re: Is it hard for you to beat rpgs nowadays?

I don't find RPGs hard because I'm the idiot who grinds like a mad woman early on... only to find a better grinding spot a little further on. I'm usually over-levelled by the time I hit any bosses, which I think is a good thing.

My problem with RPGs isn't so much to do with the time I spend playing them or time I don't have, but the time and energy to play a lengthy story which can take a while to go somewhere. Latest example for me is Dragon Age, which I've just got back to after nine months of abandonment. I'm really loving the story so far (again), but I just can't be bothered with the lengthy conversations or running around for a hour or so in one dungeon to make sure I have everything. Then there's reading the codex, checking for side missions, and gah - I get bored eventually. There's no grinding spots either, so running back through an empty dungeon is pretty boring.

I find it hard to beat them because I give up after a while. Only RPG I've never given up on is FFVII - never gets boring for me because the story just seems to keep rolling, and dungeons aren't HUGE (except for the Temple of the Ancients, which isn't long, just a little dull. Oh, and the Crater before you beat up Sephiroth).

This, I normally don't have too many problems, but if I'm under leveled or anything I'll usually know right away. Just grind a little and then there's no problem.

I'm a victim of getting lost sometimes in games I play through the first time though, but more than that I almost always end up getting stuck on something ridiculously stupid and then after I'm like "wow I'm an idiot".

    For example:

I got stuck here in ToD for like an hour because I didn't know what to do. I knew I needed to push the block south so I could create another path to get to where I needed to go but, the block is in a ridiculously stupid location. It looks like there's enough space for me to push the block up against the south edge (the one I'm facing) but you can't. SO, basically I pushed the block all the way left and then I had no way of getting to the north side of the block to push it down since the stairs and the other wall are in the way -_-

I was like UM okaaay and I went around looking for another path to the other side of it so I could pull it instead, but there wasn't one. Later, when I got frustrated and tried again... apparently I can walk over the corner of the steps and squeeze my way in @_@ it looked all glitchy lol.

I was thinking that since I'm artificially creating it, I'll create it with rocket fuel instead of blood, and thus it will be able to fly, using the dolphin's dorsal fins as wings. And from the air, it will look down upon us all and protect us against sharks, and search for bananas.

Re: Is it hard for you to beat rpgs nowadays?

I think if anything, I just am not near as committed as I once was to playing videogames and beating them, but at the same time I'm a hell of a lot smarter then I was at age 13 or w/e, so it kinda evens out.

What I mean by that is I dont have time to grind for hours and hours while playing videogames, and I dont care to spend time maxing out levels/stats, etc. In the same token, I know how to apply different things I've learned from playing videogames and string them together to get me by quicker, like I have more common sense on what to do against bosses I've never been up against and stuff like that. I think it may be a bit harder for me to beat videogames then before because I don't really have the patience anymore to put up with the bullshit if I don't like the game, and it takes a lot more to get me attached to said game.
