Darn, this is one of the few PSX games I'd definitely get again, alongside Suikoden II and Xenogears. Brings back memories, although I consider the first Grandia to be of a greater quality than the successors. Grandia II wasn't exactly what I found on the original one.
I dunno exactly why the first is so good, although it must be the HUUUUUUGE story (I mean, the story for the game is pretty immense, from the first town to the End of the World...and beyond!! I don't think it should be a spoiler anymore), or a few of the characters (namely, Milwa and GADWIN! Maybe Feena, but just a bit). Maybe it's the combination of zany and serious in each of the chapters; perhaps the greatest example of zany is the Sue and Puffy's combined cheerleading dances of boosting...or perhaps Nana, Saki and Mio, the three incompetent officers from the large army. Then the serious part right facing the very end.
I found it long, but I found it very interesting. It didn't felt stretched at all, and despite how brutally linear it is (given that you couldn't return to earlier towns), it allowed to ask for more.
I actually found one of the secret dungeons (and gladly enough, they tell you it's one of the secret dungeons), but I was renting the game and sadly couldn't enter at it. I believe it was the cave secret dungeon (not the Tower secret dungeon). I also like how everyone grows a bit, and the secrets that are revealed.
Oh, and...even though I had it, I could never use End of the World T.T
