In simple terms, what does this mean for the future of atlus?
In the last few months, Atlus' parent company Index went through some financial troubles resulting in them being put up for auction. The results of the auction are finally in with Sega coming out as the new owner of Index, and thus Atlus. Sega will be putting Index and all of the IPs they own under their Sega Dream Corporation, which is a subsidiary of Sega Corporation, which is under Sega Sammy. According to Sega, they plan to use the IPs gained from the purchase of Index for their PC online and mobile gaming sections.
How this will impact Atlus and their development of Persona 5 or other properties is currently unknown.

There is nothing specific on the impact for Atlus. I'm guessing that Sega will be dictating what Atlus will make going into the future. How much Sega will control Atlus we won't know for probably another year or two as we start seeing the future games coming out from Atlus. Atlus has in the past seemed to have a fair amount of freedom as part of Index, though it's unknown how much restriction Index placed on Atlus. Sega could end up restricting more freedom, but it is all just guessing right now.

surely they would continue with persona and the shin megami tensei series? I wonder what attracted sega to atlus in the first place...
They wanted the IPs for the PC online gaming and mobile platforms. So my guess is that we may see less console and portable games and more of their IPs in areas that are not normally seen. It sounds like Atlus' IPs will survive and continue, just not in the format we would want to play them.

It's more likely that SEGA will allow Atlus to continue all of its projects uninterrupted, and provide budget. With new projects will come the input. I'd expect to see Sonic inserted into random things here and there, but I highly doubt that SEGA intends to interrupt Atlus.

I hope I'm wrong too, but I'm really worried. Even if things go well and Atlus gets to do whatever they want. Sega has a really bad track record on localizing games. So games like Catherine might never see light over here.

I've really been hanging out for persona 5, It would be a darn shame if it wasn't localised... or even worse... designed for a mobile phone.
I was really surprised to hear that SEGA was purchasing another company. I guess I have been making the assumption that with their lack of system announcement and shoddy Sonic games that they just aren't doing well, but if they are picking up new companies they must be doing alright.
I'm not too worried about Atlas since I'm going to assume that SEGA knows a good thing when they see it.
lol
pretty sure the bearsona series will continue, but the REAL games that i would look forward to like SMTV are never gonna become more then a pipe dream. rip

Sega and Atlus..... Sonic X Persona confirmed!!!!! Jokes aside, it will be interesting to see how Sega will be handling the parent building of Atlus. Maybe we'll be seeing some Phantasy Star cameos in future Atlus titles. I hope this won't have a negative impact on the SMT X Fire Emblem project that Atlus is working on.

If SEGA is going to bring out a niche title like the Miku games then I wouldn't be that worried. Though now might be a good time to learn Moon, outside of Sonic they seem to stick with Sony consoles so its safe to say we will continue to get Persona and we may even see SMT go back to Sony.
